    Notes
    • Virgie Speights wrote a sketch of this couple on the occasion of their 58th wedding anniversary, in a column of hers dated August 6, 1963. It was published in her book "Old Timers of Sabine County, Texas." She stated that the couple met in Mansfield, Louisiana, where Mrs. Bly, the former Miss Lavinia Anderson, lived at the time. "Mrs. Bly is also alert, energetic and serene. She keeps her house spic and span and is an excellent cook." Virgie added that the couple had a "tintype of Mrs. Bly's father in Civil War Confederate uniform, made about 1860 or 1861."
