- James C. Chance, born May 29, 1869 In Patroon, Texas or Shelbyville, Shelby County, Texas; died January 25, 1934. Emily Elizabeth Grant, born December 28, 1874 in Sandy Creek, Texas, Sabine County, died in 1937. Sandy Creek is now under water at Toledo Bend Lake. Also, Hickory Hill, where all of their 13 children were born. James and Elizabeth were married September 21, 1891. They lived in Hickory Hill, Texas, Sabine County.
James was a farmer when me married Elizabeth. His first bale of cotton was sold after they married to buy merchandise for a general merchandise store. The building was in one corner of the front yard. They lived there until 1920 or 1921, and then the store was moved to Burkville, Texas, Newton County. They kept the farm in Sabine County.
The built a home in Burkville and operated a general merchandise store. In the early 30's, the store burned from a fire started next door at a garage. The farm in Sabine County was sold after the fire, and another merchandise store was built in Burkville on the same property. They also bought another smaller farm and built a home just outside Burkville on the Wiergate Highway. They both lived there until their deaths.
During the time he was in business at Burkville, it was known as JC Chance & Son. The son was Earl, the oldest of six (6) children living with them when they moved to Burkville. Earl was born July 14 1960 and died October 26, 1983. He married Inez Edgar, who was a daughter of the pastor of a Baptist Church, where the family attended services.
The 13 children, born to James and Elizabeth were:

Oda, born Jun 18, 1897, who married John Davis. They had four children, Hazel, Alma, Maracell and John, Jr., "Buck."
Lonnie, born January 26, 1899, who married Mallie Carter. They had four children, Elmer, Madie, Verga and Ray.

Laveda, born November 28, 1910, and married Kilcie Miller. They had one son who died at birth. (Note: Laveda was alive at the time this was written; I will have to obtain date of death).
Bertice, born Jun 12, 1912 and married Nadyne Tompkins. They have two boys, Jim and Jerry. (Note: Bertice was alive at the time this was written; I will have to obtain date of death).
Eva, born May 31, 1915, and married Lester Kirk. They had one daughter, Elizabeth Nell or "Liz."
Viola, (Vi) born August 20, 1917 and married Richard Cole. They had one son, Larry Louin Cole. Richard is dead and she married Jim or James Allen, November 11, 1967.
James Chance had three sisters that we can remember. One half-sister named Dora Marshall, who lived in Meryville, Louisiana; Laura Crowell, who lived near Hemphill, Texas; Nona Anders, whose husband died, and she came to Burkville to live with the children after James and Elizabeth died. They are all dead now.
