- The young couple settled in a boardinghouse in Terrell, but while expecting her first child, Matthew took Mary to San Augustine to await the birth amid friends and relatives while he traveled on business. (Henson and Parmelee, p. 292). In late 1877, Matthew bought a four bedroom house in on the edge of Terrell, on the road to Rockwall for his little family. Mary later invited her younger sister to live with them and attend school in Terrell. Lizzie Davenport's presence made Matthew's long absences more tolerable for Mary. He was following in his father's footsteps and increasing his land holdings in developing areas. In Kaufman county alone he had his farm and ranch, eight town lots in Terrell (some with improvements), livestock, and brick buildings on his commercial lots, which became known as the Cartwright block (ibid, p. 294).
