      When he completed his registration for the draft during the First World War, he indicated he was farming in Pineland, Sabine County, Texas for C. A. Wood, who was also his closest relative.
      He was of Medium heighth and slender build, with brown eyes and black hair. FindAGrave shows his parents as Charles Ayers Wood and Larissa Cordelia Wright.

      Herbert Wesley Wood, Sr. was a farmer, mill worker, construction worker and master mechanic. He grew up in Pineland, Texas. He and his brothers had a band and played for dances. In Pineland he met and married Ella Mae Coats. They were married in or next to a Model T Ford. Ella Mae said of him that she never knew if she married him or a car! He opened a garage in Pineland. Their son, Herbert, Jr. was born in that town. The family moved to Forest, Nacogdoches and finally settled in Beaumont. He worked at the Buick dealership where his young family lived in an apartment above the garage. Later, he opened a garage on Highland Ave. in the South Park community of Beaumont. His son, Herbert, Jr. later joined him, and the business became Wood and Son Motors. The family was active in the South Park Baptist Church, and part of the close-knit South Park community. He was a quiet man and was dedicated to his family.
