    Notes
    • Tom Heseltine writes that Luther, along with his wife and a small son, died in a Blizzard in Colorado in 1880.

Holly Bird, however, through DNA and other research, has established that James had two sons with his wife, Margaret Ilah Walker in Colorado. His sons were Oliver Walker (b. 24 May 1884 d. 1928) and Frederick Walker (b. 1886 d. 1900) who were known by their mother's surname. According his granddaughter, he abandoned his family and may have even faked his death in the blizzard in a Missouri newspaper.

She further indicated that he can be found in 1889 Federal Land Management records, and actually died sometime after that date.
