      Martha C. McLemore
      Feb 10, 1819
      Nov 8, 1843
      Consort of Moses McLemore

Jim Strain (jstrain@nmu.edu) emailed, on July 16, 2009, that "The first wife of Moses McLemore was Martha C. EDWARDS, daughter of Jesse Edwards and Rebecca Scoggin who both died in Montgomery Co., AL. She and Moses McLemore are named in Jesse's estate settlement as husband and wife, and Moses assumes guardianship of several of Martha's siblings. I, too, have only her dates from the grave marker, and their marriage was recorded in Montgomery Co., AL as 13 OCT 1838, which also seems a bit problematic in regards to dates of the estate and children's births. I don't know how to sort out the conflicting dates, and I'll look to see if the order of listing may suggest in any way the actual birth dates of Jesse's children. Perhaps Martha was actually born in 1809? She is definitely not listed as a minor, nor as a minor above the age of 14, at the time of Jesse's death, as are several of his children. Moses McLemore became the guardian of my direct ancestor, Joseph Jackson "Jack" Edwards. I have copies of his family Bible, but I don't believe his siblings are listed.

Jim added that on "March 8th, 1858, William Edwards, administrator of Jesse Edwards states "To the Hon David Campbell Judge Probate Montgomery County" that "Martha C McLemore decd the former wife of Moses McLemore of Montgomery County who was a daughter of deceased and who was living at the death of said Jesse Edwards and who has no representative." had an interest in the sale of Land from the Estate. William had omitted 3 children of Jesse from the list of heirs at the sale of the land, as they were all deceased, and he wasn't informed correctly that they needed to be included so that their heirs might benefit from the sale of the land."

His genealogy website can be found at:

Jim's website also had the following transcription of Jesse Edward's estate settlement, from p. 603 of the Orphan's Court book dated Feb. 25, 1839, posted.

      This day came William Edwards?
And it appearing from said account that there remains in the hands of said Administrator the sum of six thousand eight hundred and forty one 50/100 dollars accruing from the sale of the real estate ? and the further sum of three thousand and eighty four 03/100 dollars, Job Norman is entitled to one fifth part ? to wit- to the sum of six hundred and sixteen 80/100 dollars ? it is ordered therefore that William Edwards, Administrator, as aforesaid pay to the said Job Norman the said sum of six hundred and sixteen 80/100 dollars ? which will be in full for his portion of said estate in right of his wife, the former widow of said deceased. ?
And it further appearing that a portion of the heirs at law of said deceased had received in his life time property by way of advancement, the value of which is assessed upon among the heirs as follows:
Amount advanced to Moses McLemore $465
      Joseph J Edwards 75.00
      William Edwards 115.00
      William B Bazzer 100.0
      $755.00
Which added to the above sum of $9925.53 portion allotted to Job Norman being first deducted therefrom ? make the sum of ten thousand and sixty three 73/100 dolllars subject to distribution among the remaining eight heirs., entitling each heir who to receive as advancement to the sum of twelve hundred and fifty seven 96/100 dollars and each heir who has received advancement the sum of twelve hundred and fifty seven 96/100 dollars first deducting therefrom the sum so received by them respectfully.
William Edwards, pay to Bayzer, $1157 96/100
To Moses McLemore, right of wife, $792 96/100
      To J. J. Edwards $1182 96/100
      To J. J. Edwards as guardian of Sarah C. Edwards $1257 96/100
To Riley Norman right of wife Rebecca, $1257 96/100
To William, guardian of Jesse L Edwards, $1257 96/100
To Job Norman, guardian of George W Edwards, $1257 96/100
William Edwards, keep his portion $1142 96/100.
    • (Research):Need to verify her date of birth, as it seems unlikely sh
e would have been able to be the mother of a son born in 1830, as cemetery records for her son Joseph Franklin McLemore seem to indicate. She would have only been 11 years old at the time.

The McLemore Burying Ground is about one mile off the Montgomery -Atlanta
Highway to the right facing east, and is about five miles from Montgomery.
It is on a knoll behind the old James McLemore home built about 1820. In
1936 Mrs. Lizzie Taylor Dickerson occupied it. A low brick wall and
iron fence surrounds the lot. Outside the main cemetery is another smaller
one, also enclosed. There are graves of slaves and faithful servants, mostly
unmarked outside all enclousures. Graves listed begin at the southwest
      corner of the plot.
