- Melba Gene McLemore speculates that Sterling's wife is the same Malinda Callahan that lived only several households away from him at the time of the 1850 Marion County, Alabama census. This appears to be based on both her relatively uncommon first name, along with her age and birthplace, plus the fact that Sterling's sister, Lucretia Jane married Malinda Callahan's brother, James Callahan. This has not been proven.
