Maj. B.A. Rogers
Death of This Venerable Citizen
On Friday morning last our community was shocked at the intelligence that Maj. Benjamin A. Rogers was not more--that his spirit had passed from earth to that "bourne whence no traveler returns." Maj. Rogers had been in his usual health, and retired at 11 o'clock Thursday night. The next morning at an early hour his daughter found him lying in his room, entirely unconscious, in which condition he remained until 11 o'clock, when the flickering spark of life fled. At the time he was stricken, the only member the family at home was his daughter, Miss Olive, his wife and daughter being in Nashville, and Mr. B. A. Rogers, Jr. being at Bailey Springs. The latter hurried to the side of his father, and arrived before his death. Mrs. Rogers and Miss Harriet were promptly reached by wife and arrived on the early afternoon train. Mr. T. M. Rogers arrived from Columbus, Miss., the same evening, the entire family thus being present at the last sad rites.
The cause of death appears to have been from the brain, and was altogether unexpected. The body was interred in the city cemetery on Saturday afternoon at 5 o'clock, after services in the Methodist church (of which the deceased had long been a member), conducted by Rev. S. E. Wasson. A large congregation attended the services.
Maj. Rogers is survived by his wife and four children, to whom, in their profound sorrow the warmest symphaty of our people is extended. He was in the 70th year of his age.
Thus has passed away one of our best and most useful citizen, a gentlemen who was ever ready by his labor and his means to advance every worthy cause. He came among us about eight years ago, from Columbia, Tenn., and by his genial manners, his public spirit, and his loyalty to the right, had won a large circle of friends, who heard of his sudden and distressing death with sincere sorrow.
