- On August 21, 1834, James McLemore gave his bond to marry Martha Mariah BARKLEY, daughter of John BARKLEY of Northampton County, North Carolina. Her father was a man of prominence in his county, serving for a time as state senator; he was apparently also an immigrant from Scotland according to family records, an assertion not disproved by the Northampton County records where he mysteriously appears shortly before 1800. In 1839 James and his wife Martha conveyed to her brother Francis D. BARKLEY all of her interest in a piece of Barkley property belonging to her family (Northampton Deed Book 28, p. 453). (James L. McLemore, III, p. 80).
