- Alice's father, Thomas Marshall Duke, came to Refugio between 1845 and 1850. He had been alcalde of the municipality of Austin and collector of the port of Matagorda (Per "Refugio" by Hobart Huson). Her grandparents were Charlotte Marshall and Basil Duke. Charlotte was said to be a daughter of Thomas Marshall, and her brother was the famous chief justice, John Marshall.
