    • Joe attended rural school, graduating from Milligan High School in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army from July 1951 through July 1953. After his basic training in Camp Gordon, Georgia he was stationed in Korea as a Military Policeman, where he was responsible for transporting prisoners of war. After his discharge, he returned to Saline County, Nebraska to farm. He moved back to the Kotas family farm, making his home with his parents, after his father retired. Along with farming, he is a hog feeder and breeder, a member of the American Legion and Cornhuskers Lodge, along with serving on the board of the Milligan Auditorium and Ceski Brati cemetery. (Milligan, p 355).

    • They met at a dance, and were married at 9 am Tuesday at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Milligan. Their attendants were a sister of the groom, Anna KOTAS and her boyfriend, Louis SUDA, a cousin of the bride, William KOCA and his sweetheart, Emma KUCERA. A wedding dinner was served at the home of the bride's parents at noon. The next day, the newlyweds spent their honeymoon at the State Fair in Lincoln, accompanied by Anna's brother and wife, James V. and Mayme KOCA (Milligan, p 358).

    • Joe and Grace met at a singles dance in Milligan. They were marreid in the East Lincoln Christian Church. Frank Sobotka of Rokeby, Nebraska, Grace's brother, was best man. Rose Marie Hulse, Joseph's sister, was matron of honor. Attendants were Merlin Hulse and Elsie Sobotka. After their marriage, they made their home at the Kotas Family Farm. (Milligan, p 355).
