- Ralph Marshall notes that Thomas is shown as a surety on (the) marriage record of his daughter Eleanor. Land records show that Eleanor and Joseph purchased 67 acres in 1811 from her father. It was undoubtedly the same 67 acres Thomas Marshall purchased in 1808 from Thomas Welch on a branch of the South Fork of the Little Otter River. In September 1816, the Van Pelt's sold this same 67 acres to Francis Pollard and probably left shortly thereafter for Highland County, Ohio where they spent the rest of their lives. Riley Marshall is recorded elsewhere as having left Bedford County in 1817, and was married in Highland County in 1818, so he probably accompanied his sister and brother-in-law on the move from Virginia. Census records indicate that Eleanor & Jospeh had 3 sons and 8 daughters by 1830. (Ralph Marshall, p 26).
Ralph Marshall writes that the will of Joseph Van Pelt was dated February 1, 1857 and proven May 18, 1864. It named wife Eleanor, daughter Lucinda Atwell and her children, Joseph M. and Nelson T. Atwell. Witnesses were A. Cunningham and John Morrow, administrator was John A. Patterson and sureties D.F. Scott and R.S. Evans. Perhaps one or more of these men were son-in-laws. (Ralph Marshall, p 26).
