    Notes
    • A minister of the Baptist Church. He was called "Black Lewis" to distinguish him from a cousin by the same name who was also a Baptist Minister. He was the Pastor of the Broaddus Baptist Church. After he retired, he continued to teach Sunday School, even after he had to sit in a chair to teach. When grandchildren came for a homecoming, they always arrived early in order to sit in his class and hear him teach (White and Toole, p 76).
