- Could Randall have been married twice? Barbara Smith and Nan McCoy Kittell both show that Sarah Kelley and Randall McDonald married and had a large family. The widowed Sarah McDonald can be found in Jasper County, Texas in 1860 and 1870 as the head of household of a large family. The 1928 death certificate of Joseph McDonald, born 1847, also seems to confirm this, showing his parents as Randall McDonald and Sarah Kelley. The informant was his wife, Mrs. Joe McDonald. Son John Malachi McDonald, born 1843, appears to have been names in honor of Sarah's father, Malachi Kelley.
However, the 1924 death certificate of Alexander McDonald, born 1845, instead lists his parents as R. McDonald, born NC, and "Christian McMILLON" also born NC. The informant was Alexander and Joseph's youngest brother, E[mory] McDonald.
