John Philip Walker was the fourth son born to Philip and Sarah E. Walker. He was born in Lauderdale County, Tennessee but records also indicate his birth in neighboring Haywood County.
When he was a small child the family, now with seven children, left Tennessee and settled in Guadalupe County near the San Marcos River at Prairie Lea. John P. was only twelve years old when Civil War broke out. He was too young to serve, but his three older brothers, Patrick Henry, William Byron, and James Knox, all left Texas to serve.
In 1873 he married Addie Fenner and they moved to Luling, living on S. 1st Street (now Mesquite Ave.) John P joined his brother, James K., in the mercantile business 'J.K. Walker and Brother' in Luling. They had two sons before Addie's death at an early age, in 1874.
After Addie's death, John P. and the boys lived with the Fenner family in Luling: his mother-in-law Alzedda and three of her adult children, Sarah E., Christopher and Josephine C.
In Feb 1881 John married Josephine C. Fenner. They made their home in Luling and had four children.
By 1883, a new store at the corner of Davis and Pecan became an important mercantile center for Luling and surrounding area. The store underwent changes in the following years, but ownership interest remained primarily with the Walker brothers and eventually younger nephews. Walker Bros. store still remains on Davis Street.
John married Josephine Clementine Fenner in Feb 1881. Josephine (daughter of John McCall Fenner and Alzada McGrew) was born on 17 Jan 1857 in Guadalupe County, Texas; died on 25 Jan 1928 in Luling, Caldwell County, Texas; was buried in Luling City Cemetery, Luling, Caldwell County, Texas.
