    L. C. Eddins was born August 28, 1913 in Rimlig, Texas, a sawmill town in Sabine County south of Jasper. He was the son of Larkin Chivers Eddins, Sr. and William Hattie Tatum Eddins .

    He married Dorothy Collier on September 2, 1939 and they had five children, Dorothy, Faye, Nancy, Bobby and Billy.

    He was a truck driver for Texaco Company. He died of lung cancer on January 10, 1969, at the age of 55.

    Services were held at Mangum Chapel on January 12 with the Reverand S.E. Sevison officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Memorial Park with Masonic graveside services held by Sam Samford Lodge No. 149.

    Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Dorothy Eddins of Center; three daughters, Dorothy Whiteman of Houston and Faye Huffman and Nancy Gilchrist of Center; two sons, Bobby and Billy Eddins of Center; seven grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Hattie Eddins of Fort Worth; and four sisters, Mrs. Lillian Isom of Jasper, Mrs. Opal Hammock of Houston and Mrs. Lillie Lee and Mrs. Bernice McDonald of Fort Worth.

    Dorothy B. Collier Eddins, 87, of Bronson, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2007, at her residence.

    Mrs. Eddins was born April 16, 1920, in Mooringsport, Louisiana, as a daughter of the late George Augustus and Gladys Mavor Winn Collier. She had lived in Sabine County for the past few years.

    Survivors: children, Dorothy Marie Whiteman and Carolyn Faye Smith, both of Bronson, Nancy Drew, of Pineland, and Bobbie Eddins of Center; 14 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, L.C. Eddins.

    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Watson and Sons Funeral Home chapel in Center with Bro. Royce Robb officiating. Interment followed at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

    Services were under the direction of Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center.

    He was born in Louisiana, the son of William Theodore and Louiza Dexter West Collier. He married Gladys Mavor Winn on July 29, 1919.

    He served as a naval fireman in World War I on the patrol boat Alcedo, the first American vessel sunk during the war.

    He was on watch in the engine room under instructions as machinist mate. When the Alcedo, patroling off the coast of France, was torpedoed by a German submarine, he stopped the main engine and then raised the safety valve on the main engine by the hand gear, despite the fact that he was, by that time, standing in knee-deep water. The ship sank four minutes after being struck and George ended up in the water for 18 hours before he was rescued. He contracted tuburculosis, which ultimately lead to his death on November 8, 1936.

    Gladys Mavor Winn Collier was born December 11, 1897 in Grange Hall Community in Marshall, Texas to Albert Mavor Winn and Annie Asia Russell Winn. She was the youngest of Annie's 11 children. She attended Marshall Public Schools.

    Gladys was a Methodist and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxillary. She was a homemaker, a former employee of the telephone company and the Marshall Basket Company. She operated the Marshall Canteen at the high school for many years.

    She married George Augustus Collier, Sr. on July 29, 1919 in Marshall. They soon had three children: Dorothy Byrle, Reba "Nell" and George Augustus "Jake", Jr.

    She was prededed in death by her husband in 1936 and by her daughter Nell in 1986. She died April 15, 1993 following a long illness. Services were held at Travis Street Chapel of Sullivan Funeral Home. Reverand Glenn Lowrimore and Reverend Jerry Ross officiated. Interment followed in Greenwood Cemetery.
