    Harley DEAN of Caro and Miss Katherine JOOS spent Sunday afternoon and evening in Saginaw and attended the baccalaureate exercises of Saginaw High School held in the First Congregational Church. Miss Ellen HARTMAN, cousin of Miss JOOS, was one of the 385 members of the class.

    Fred Joos dies at 98 in Caro

    Fred Jacob Joos, 98, died suddenly Monday at this home in Caro.

    He was born February 26, 1882 in Buena Vista Township, Saginaw Co., the son of Jacob and Rosina (BENKELMAN) Joos. He came to Cass City as a child. Joos married Mary McLELLAN November 25, 1908 in Cass City. They moved to Caro in 1958. Mrs. JOOS died February 19, 1959.

    He was a member of the Salem United Methodist church of Cass City and the Tuscola Farm Bureau.

    He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Harley (Katherine) DEAN of Caro; one grandson, Fred DEAN of Spring Arbor, and two great-granddaughters, Laurie and Vickie of Spring Arbor. One brother and one sister preceded him in death. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon from Little's Funeral Home Cass City with Rev. Eldred Kelley of the Salem United Methodist church officiating.

    Burial was in Elkland cemetery.

    Mrs. Fred Joos dies at Daughter's Home

    Funeral services for Mrs. Fred Joos, 72, resident of Elkland Township for 50 years, were held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Douglas Funeral Home. Rev. S.R. Wurtz, pastor of Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church, officiated and burial was in Elkland cemetery. Mrs. Joos, ill for some time, died Thursday evening in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harley DEAN in Caro.

    The former Mary McLELLAN, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Neil McLELLAN, was born October 12, 1886 in Port Huron. She was married to Mr. Joos at Cass City November 25, 1908. After marking their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary at their farm home, Mr. and Mrs. Joos went to Caro in November to live with their daughter.

    Surviving are: her husband; her daughter, Mrs. DEAN (Katherine); a grandson, Frederick DEAN; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah McINTYRE and Mrs. Hugh SMITH, and two brothers, Joseph McLELLAN of Bad Axe and Angus McLELLAN of Detroit.

    Fred Jose (sic) of Elkland and Miss Mary McLellan of Sheridan township were united in marriage at the Evangelical parsonage by Rev. J. A. Schweitzer on Wednesday afternoon. They were attended by Wm. Jose, brother of the groom, and Miss Hattie Muck. The happy couple left on the afternoon train for Saginaw where they will spend a few days with friends. Congratulations.

    Pioneer Farmer Dies at Age of 89

    Jacob Joos passed away at the farm home of his son, W.F. JOOS, Monday afternoon at three o'clock, a the age of eighty-nine years, eight months and thirteen days. He had been in poor health fo the past year but was able to be up part of each day until the last few weeks when his strength failed him and he slept peacefully away when the end came.

    Mr. JOOS was one of the oldest residents of this vicinity, both from the point of years and time of residence here. He was born at Baigheim*, Wurttemburg, Germany, September 1, 1844, and came to Michigan in the spring of 1871. He was married to Rosena BENKELMAN May 11, 1879 at Saginaw, where they resided until 1883 when they came to Cass City and purchased the farm that has since been their home. Five years ago this month, they celebrated their golden wedding with their three children and five grandchildren all present. He leaves his aged widow whose care and devotion has been wonderful. He also is survived by two sons, William F. an Fred, of this place, and one daughter, Mrs. Laurence HARTMAN, of Saginaw and four granddaughters and one grandson.

    Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the Evangelical church, conducted by Rev. G.A. SPITLER, and were attended by many relatives and friends as a token of the esteem in which he was held. Mr. and Mrs. L.E. HARTMAN and daughter, Ellen, Fred CROCKER and Mr. and Mrs. John GIBBS, all of Saginaw, attended the funeral.

    BonnieMargaret Jacobs writes, in her 1981 unpublished manuscript, that Rosina and her younger sister Maria Dorothea both went to Saginaw as young women to work as household helpers. Rosine returned to Cass City after her marriage to Jacob Joos in Saginaw to raise her children.

    Final Rites Held for Oldest Village Resident Thursday

    Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Douglas Funeral Home for Mrs. Rosina JOOS, 98, Cass City's oldest resident. Mrs. Joos died early Tuesday morning after a period of failing health. At the time of her death, she was living with her son, William JOOS, of Cass City.

    Mrs. Joos came to Cass City when she was 18. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frederick BENKELMAN. She was married May 11, 1878, to Jacob JOOS in Saginaw and came to Elkland Township where they made their living for many years on a farm. Mr. JOOS died May 14, 1934. Mrs. Joos was born in Germany March 17, 1855. She was a member of the Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church of Cass City. Surviving are two sons, William and Fred JOOS of Cass City; a daughter, Mrs. Lawrence HARTMAN, of Saginaw; five grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. Rev. S.R. WURTZ officiated at the funeral services and burial was in Elkland Cemetery.

    Mr. and Mrs. Joos Married 50 Years

    Family Gathered Saturday Evening To Celebrate the Golden Anniversary

    Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Joos celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Saturday evening when their family was present at a bounteous dinner given at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.F. Joos with whom they reside.

    Their daughter, Mrs. L.E. Hartman of Saginaw furnished a beautiful pyramid wedding cake, trimmed in gold and white, and the table was prettily decorated with flowers. The honored couple received congratulations and good wishes from their children and also gifts of gold from the family and other relatives.

    Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Hartmann and daughter, Ellen, of Saginaw, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Joos and daughter, Miss Katherine and Geraldine Striffler were the guests.

    Mr. and Mrs. Joos were married at Saginaw May 11, 1879, and came to Cass City in 1883 and purchased the farm that has since been their home. Mr. Joos has reached the advanced age of 84 years and his companion is 74. Both are still very active and their many friends wish them good health and happiness to the end of life's journey.
