4. | Hampton Lee Pratt was born on 7 Jul 1872 in Bibb County, Alabama (son of Marshall J. Pratt and Eliza Windbrush Cochran); died on 20 Mar 1952; was buried in Hemphill City Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas. Notes:
DOB may be in error, as Everett Reese Pratt, said to be his younger brother is said to be born in November 1872, 4 months after Hampton's birth.
Or could this be the Hampton Pratt that was the husband of Mollie BECKHAM and father of Hampton Lee Pratt born ca 1892?
Could he instead be a son of Drayton Pratt and Mary Benena Low?
Hampton married Mary E. Cooper on 10 Oct 1899. Mary (daughter of Sgt. William H. Cooper and Arletha L. "Lethia" Harris) was born on 23 Mar 1874 in Sabine County, Texas; died on 17 Oct 1940 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Hemphill City Cemetery, Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas. Married:
Their wedding was at the home of her parents, with Preacher Martin, a hard-shell Baptist Minister officiating. There was a big crowd. The wedding supper was in her parents' home....and dinner at the home of the grooms' parents. Mrs. Adkins added that there were lots of watermelons, which they spent the day eating. The groom was 17 and his bride was only 16 years of age.
Their sixtieth wedding anniversary celebration was hosted by their seven (surviving) children: Jimmerson Adkins of Pineland, Mrs. Ozro Pratt of Hemphill, Louis Adkins of Rosevine, Mrs. Johnnie Butler of Alta Loma, Wendford Adkins of Pearland, and Cordell Adkins of Jasper. Members of the family, including children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attended church services Sunday making a total of 45 in all.
"The Adkinses are a young-looking, young-acting couple in excellent health, he gardens and she takes care of her house, fills her freezer and then cans about 200 jars of food each year...He and a neighbor, Mrs. W. C. Boyd, share a garden...Mr. and Mrs. Adkins also lived in Jasper, and in Jackson County, Oklahoma, always being engaged in farming and ranching and retiring in 1960."
Besides their two daughters and five sons, the Adkinses boast 47 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.
(Excerpted from Virgie Speight's "Vignettes of Pioneer Families" column published July 9, 1964, on the occasion of their sixtieth wedding anniversary).
