Orange-Clara Johnson, 95, of Orange, died Monday, August 13, 2012, at Oakwood Manor in Vidor.

She was raised on a farm in Hemphill and by the time she was in her 20's she was working at the shipyard in Orange during World War II. She was a selalline "Rosy the Riveter" welder at the shipyard, where she met a fellow who she would soon call her husband, They had Frances in 1945 and Tucker in 1949. While raising their children they lived in Orange and Kentucky. In 1967, her first grandchild was born, and she raised Charlotte as her daughter.
She owned her own beauty shope and had many wonderful memories throughout the years. She was an active member of Cove Baptist Church, where she taught the elderly ladies Sunday School Class as well as participated in other organizations at the church. After Hurricane Ike, Clara donated her house and land to the church and moved to Mauriceville with her granddaughter.

(Transcribed by Melinda McLemore Strong, October 2012)
Spelled Claricy on the 1900 census. Pam Mahon shows she married Robert Scurlock Jr, but is likely confusing her with Carrie Gladys Conn, who married Robert Scurlock. It could be that Carrie was married to a Scurlock, as the informant on the death certificate of her brother, James Patrick Conn, was a Mrs. Carrie Scurlock.
Her granddaughter, Martha White, wrote that when Clarissa's husband Robert died at a relatively young age, Clarissa moved to Junction with her younger children, to be close to sons Ernest who by that time was well established in that area.

(Name of paper not given)
For the second time within a week death entered the Boyett home and
claimed Mrs. R. E. Boyett just three days after her beautiful little
granddaughter Bobby Louise Coon had died. Pneumonia was the cause of
the death of both. Mrs. Boyett was critically ill when little Bobby
Louise was called to her Heavenly Home. Mrs. Boyett died Thursday
afternoon, March 7 and the body was buried in the Junction cemetery
by the side of her little granddaughter late Friday afternoon, Rev.
R. Elmer Dunham, pastor of the Baptist Church officiating.
Mrs. R. E. Boyett was born in Sabine county on July 22, 1877, and
spent all her life in Texas. When 15 years of age she was married to
R. E. Boyett and to this union were born seven children--five daughters
and two sons. The surviving children are Mrs. L. H. Cordray, Lakeside;
Mrs. Clarence Holbert and Mrs. Jas. Nobles of Beaumont; Mrs. Willie
Coon and Miss Annie Laurie Boyett of Junction; A. P. Boyett, Corpus
Christie; and Ernest Boyett, Austin. Two sisters, Mrs. Abbie McGown
and Mrs. J. O. Boyett, both of Bronson and about 11 grandchildren and
4 great grandchildren besides many other relatives who also survive.
She moved to Junction four years ago to be with her son Ernest who
was employed here. During her residence here she made many close friends.
Early in life she was converted and united with the Baptist Church.
She lived a consecrated Christian life. Her life was a benediction to all
who knew her. She lived only 57 years but her life was one of service.
It was marked with deeds of kindness and cheer. She scattered flowers
and sunshine wherever she went. She loved her home, her children and her
friends and in her homegoing her children have lost a devoted mother,
her neighbors a true and faithful friend, and the community a loyal citizen.
It can be said of her that she was a woman of strong Christian character--
patient, loving and self-sacrificing.

Charter member of the Gravel Hill Antioch Baptist Church, also gave land for the Church. His tombstone reads "Father Married To Mariah A. Mulford 19 Sept 1847, Kind father of love thou are gone to thy rest, Forever to bask in the joys of the blest." Kay Parker McCary shows him as a son of James CONN and Martha A. GIBSON.
He donated the property used to establish the Gravel Hill Cemetery. A deed to the property where the Church and cemetery are now located was given by Mr. George W. Conn, in August, 1875, but the Sabine County Court House burned in November and all records were destroyed, including the deed to the property. For some reason the deed was not refiled, but 97 years later, in 1972, a copy was found by a daughter-in-law looking through Mr. Conn's old trunk. Mrs. Allie Conn promptly filed the old deed.
The church was organized on January 3, 1876, under the direction of Elders J. S. Lambert and J. J. Roundtree. Thirteen other men and women went into the organization, including George Conn, John Anderson, J. S. White, Hosie Baldaree, Ann Mason, M. A. Conn, T. D. Burkhalter, John Deweese, L. S. Hoard, Mary E. White, Sophie H. Wallace, Mrs. C. A. Hoard, and C. Baldaree. In their preamble to organization, signed by each member, the church stated that they had "been regularly baptized on the profession of our faith"..."under the name of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of Christ holding to the doctrine contained in the sacred Scriptures to be predicated on republican principles..." On May 18, 1991, the new sanctuary was dedicated. In July, 1997, the church became incorporated under the name Gravelhill Antioch Missionary Baptist Church to distinguish it from another church in the state with the name Antioch.

John Larry Conn, 51, formerly of Hemphill was identified as one of the four contract workers who lost their life in a helicopter crash Dec. 11. The crew had left Sabine Pass and was enroute to an offshore oil platform 18-miles off of the Texas coast Thursday morning. Early reportes by John Griggs, senior vice president of Rotorcraft Leasing Co, LLC stated that the early winter storm was not a factor in the helicopter crash. Snowfall and sleet, combined with 10 to 20 mph north winds were not a challenge to the pilot...New Orleans Coast Guard got the call at 9:47 a.m., almost two hours after the aircraft should have arrived at the platform.....Conn, along with four others, were killed in the crash.
