He was born in Louisiana, the son of William Theodore and Louiza Dexter West Collier. He married Gladys Mavor Winn on July 29, 1919.
He served as a naval fireman in World War I on the patrol boat Alcedo, the first American vessel sunk during the war.
He was on watch in the engine room under instructions as machinist mate. When the Alcedo, patroling off the coast of France, was torpedoed by a German submarine, he stopped the main engine and then raised the safety valve on the main engine by the hand gear, despite the fact that he was, by that time, standing in knee-deep water. The ship sank four minutes after being struck and George ended up in the water for 18 hours before he was rescued. He contracted tuburculosis, which ultimately lead to his death on November 8, 1936.

Funeral service for Mr. Homer Raiford Collier, 89, of Douglass, Texas will be held on Monday, February 20, 2012, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Douglass with Bro. John McGuire, Bro. Bobby Whitehead and Bro. Bobby King officiating. Burial will follow at Douglass Cemetery.
Mr. Collier was born on September 25, 1922, in Melrose, Texas to the late Alton Terrell and Tommie Inez Walker Collier. He passed away on Friday, February 17, 2012, in Nacogdoches.
In 1941 after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Homer went to Orange, Texas where he worked for Consolidated Shipyard, helping build destroyers and battleships for the war, including the USS Aurick. While working there he met his future wife, Eunice Watson and they married on September 1, 1944.
Homer and Eunice returned to the family farm in Douglass after the war where they lived until their passing. He went to work for the Singer Sewing Machine Co. in 1949, as a salesman. He later bought the Nacogdoches Singer dealership on East Main in downtown Nacogdoches, where he remained working until his death. Homer was the longest living business owner in downtown Nacogdoches. Homer was an ordained Baptist deacon for 60 years, and he served at First Baptist Church of Douglass until his death. He was also a 65 year Master Mason for Swift Lodge # 678, where his father, Alton Collier and grandfather, Absalom Collier were members before him.
Homer had a love for horses and cattle, and he raised them on his farm in Douglass. The animals he trained were sold to clowns for use at rodeos and other venues for entertainment. He enjoyed performing himself with his animals at rodeos and churches.
Homer is survived by his daughter, Joyce Rogers of Alto, Texas; three sons, Larry Collier and wife, Diann, Dale Collier and wife, Judy and Dave Collier all of Douglass; three sisters, Laura Hand, Lois Carlson and JoAnne Whitehead all of Nacogdoches; grandchildren, Kevin Rogers, Carla Absalom, Lelena Rushing, Amanda Arrington, Casey Collier, Michelle Baggett, Ann Tucker, Thomas Collier, Nancy Rice, Lucas Collier and Christine Snyder; twenty six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family and good friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Eunice Watson Collier; and three brothers, Cecil, Lenox and Buford Collier. Pallbearers will be Kevin Rogers, Casey Collier, Thomas Collier, Lucas Collier, Nicholas Rushing, Hunter Rothenberger, Adam Lawson, Josh Lawson, Tyler Tucker, Fred Athey and George Stokes. Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 19, 2012, from 5 until 7 p.m. at Laird Funeral Home. The family would like to extend their warmest thanks to Dr. Charles Page and all the other doctors and staff at Memorial Hospital in Nacogdoches for the kindness and professionalism they bestowed upon Mr. Collier. Laura Buckmaster shows that she died on 10 Apr 1935 in Travis County, Texas.
It might also be possible that she was the 97 year old Ida Mae Brooks that died 1 May 1995 in San Augustine, a lifelong resident of the Brookeland/Browndell areas, and whom was survived by cousin, Roxie Simmons of Geneva. (Obituary in the Mary 3, 1995 Sabine County Reporter).
According to the Wikipedia biography of his daughter, actress Ann Miller, he was " a criminal lawyer who represented the Barrow Gang, Machine Gun Kelly, and Baby Face Nelson, among others."

She retired from a longtime, successful career as a customer services supervisor for Southwestern Bell Telephone. She was a charter member of Nacogdoches Congregational Methodist Church. Mrs. Hand was a member of Nacogdoches Chapter #428 Order of the Eastern Star, having served as Worthy Matron. She was an active member of the Altrusa Club, Telephone Pioneer Club and Business & Professional Women's Club. Her survivors include sons, Jack Hand Jr. and wife, Paula, of Nacogdoches, Jerry Allen Hand and wife, Patti, of Woden, and John Collier Hand and wife, Eva of Hudson; grandchildren, John Hull of Austin, Emily Morris of Austin, Tammy Hand of Hawkins, Jenny Hand of Woden, Wesley Collier Hand and wife, Jennifer, of Nacogdoches, and Rachael Starr Hand of Hudson; great-grandsons, Kaden Walker Hand and Kase Ryan Hand of Woden; and sisters, Lois Marie Carlson and JoAnn Whitehead, both of Nacogdoches. Funeral services for Lois Marie Collier Carlson, age 77, of Nacogdoches, will be at 10 A.M. Monday, December 2, 2013 at Laird Funeral Home Chapel in Nacogdoches with Joshua Rhodes officiating and burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery. She was born May 6, 1936 in the New Hope community of Nacogdoches, the daughter of Alton Terrell Collier and Tommie Inez Walker Collier and passed away, Thursday, November 28, 2013. She spent her early years roaming the acres of the SFA College Dairy that her daddy managed where she, along with her sister, JoAnne and cousin, MaryAnn, created some of her best childhood memories. She loved making playhouses from pine straw, teacups from acorns, and outrunning her brother, Buford, after she'd ridden his horse without permission. Her older sister Laura, "LarBelle", helped take care of her after she was struck by a car while getting off the school bus at age 12. She adored her older brothers, Cecil, Lenox and Homer and always described how hard it was for their mama and daddy during WWII when the soldier's whereabouts were unknown.
Lois was a beautiful, NHS senior when she met Billy Mooney, her school bus driver and future husband. She graduated in May 1954 and they married in June. Following Laura's example of three "J's", she and Billy had Jan, Judy and Joy. The large Collier clan was very close and Lois loved the big boisterous family reunions and Christmas parties that continued over more than half a century. Toddler nephew, Jack Jr., was the first to call her Aunt "Ree"...it stuck and she loved it.
She was known for her southern cooking...especially chicken and dressing, Ritz pecan pies, hot chocolate cakes, beans, cornbread and mashed potatoes.
Many important things in her life happened at the family church...New Hope Congregational Methodist...where there were weddings, family parties, baby dedications and funerals.
Loss and young widowhood came too soon.
Later, she and Joe Mims, Billy's childhood friend, married and that brought Joe's sons, Joe and Doug, into the family. Lois and "Dumas" spent their middle years together and watched as seven plus five grandchildren were born...Lauri, Katy, Trent, Clint, Kelli, Joshua, April, Christi, Kinsey, Rachel, Lauren and Caroline. Retirement came and so did laughter filled road trips with her aging siblings. And she and Dumas became charter members of the Nacogdoches Congregational Methodist Church. At some point she taped a verse of Scripture to the flyleaf of her Bible:
If my people, who are called by name,
will humble themselves and pray and seek my face
and turn from their wicked ways,
then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin
and will heal their land. (II Chronicles 7:14)
And then loss and widowhood came again.
A generation of great-grandchildren began...Bryson, Corbin, Mason, Rylan, Kendall, Harlan and Faith. And the original generation of siblings grew smaller, but their stories were still told at the family reunions and Christmas parties.
Lois became Mrs. Ed Carlson and they shared 8 years. Her decline began several years ago and Thanksgiving morning she told Judy that she was going Home. And that afternoon, while Jan, April & Faith, Lauri & Rylan were at her bedside...she left to go Home.
In addition to her husband, Ed Carlson, Lois is survived by daughters, Jan Rhodes, Judy Sweat and husband, Jim, and Joy Floyd and husband, Tom; 7 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sister, JoAnne Whitehead and husband, Joe Bob as well as other extended family and good friends.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Alton and Inez Collier; husbands, Billy Mooney and Joe Mims; son-in-law, Daniel Rhodes; brothers, Cecil, Lenox, Homer and Buford Collier and sister, Laura Collier Hand.
Pallbearers will be Jim Bob Sweat, Jimmy collier, Jack Hand, Jerry Hand, Larry Collier, Bobby Whitehead, Ronnie Collier and Dale Collier. Honorary pallbearers will be Collier nephews.
Visitation with Lois' family will be from 5 until 7 PM, Sunday, December 1, 2013 at Laird Funeral Home in Nacogdoches.

She is said to have married Allen MOONEY and later a Mr. CREWS.

At the time of the 1860 census, he was living in Precint 2, Robertson County, Texas in the home of David and Elizabeth WALL. He was listed as Buckley M. Collins, age 13, Male, born in Texas. No occupation was listed. The household was 447-447, and was shown on Page number 62 of the census.
The son of Nathaniel M. Collins and Susan Burroughs.
After the death of their parents, the children of Elisha and Eliza Ann (McGrew) Collins can be found in Robertson Co, TX with and near the family of James Tate McGrew.
THE SOUTHERN McGREWS GREW says that they moved to Texas in late 1834 and they got 3 land grants (1 league in Sabine County on 15 November 1835, 160 acres in Hood County on 15 February 1837, and 320 acres in Sabine County on 15 December 1837) for services Elisha rendered from 12 November 1835 to 7 January 1836 in the Texas Army. He was captain of a company of volunteers in 1836 and was said to be a currier and tanner by trade. They were in Leon County, TX for the 1850 census and Eliza was head of household because he had died of dropsy on 9 January 1850---shortly before this census, in the home of their daughter Elizabeth.
Wynema McGrew's book cites these same facts, crediting Allye Moody as the source. The Patent number for the Hood County land was shown to be Patent 581, Vol. 15.
Ancestry.com shows that Eisha M. Collins was on the 1836 Texas Territory Census, in the District of Sabine. The Database they cite is "TX Tax List Index, 1830-1839." Elisha M. Collins is also shown on the Ancestry.com database of US Federal Census Mortality Schedules Index for Leon County, listed as Age 38, Male, Born in Kentucky, and dying in January of Dropsey. The ID # in MRT197_63297.

Died, at his home in Verda, La., March 2, 1914, Jackson Warren Collins, aged 62 years and 29 days.
The subject of this sketch was born in Perry county, Miss., Feb. 13, 1852, and came to Louisiana with his parents when about two years old. He was left an orphan at the tender age of 6 or 7 years, and this with the civil war following close made his efforts all the harder to get a living and some education, but it developed that self-reliance and determination made him a success in life.
On Dec. 19, 1876, he married Mary Elizabeth McLamore, who survives him. His oldest daughter, Mrs. Blanche Gilcrease, preceded him in death, but he leaves seven children living: Mrs. Imogene Lang and Dr. Lee L. Collins, of Alexandria; and Misses Lilla, Eva and Esma, and Messrs. Warren and Weaver Collins, of Verda. Every one of these children have been graduated from some of the best schools of our State, and the deceased did this and made his living absolutely by farming; such a record is worthy of note and of emulation.
He joined the Missionary Baptist church at the age of about twenty years and for nearly forty-two years was a leading and faithful member, serving the last twelve years as a deacon. His life was above reproach, and having always the courage of his convictions he was a leader in every community where he lived. Devoted to his family, generous to a fault with every one, standing with the firmness of Gibraltar for the right always, he will be sorely missed in this community, and the loss of his bereaved ones is irreparable.
His bier was followed by more than a hundred relatives and friends from Verda to the Mt. Zion cemetery, where a still greater number of friends in that community, his former home, vied with each other in paying tribute to his worth as a friend and brother. Revs. I. M. Brian and P. W. Lofton conducted the funeral ceremonies paying eloquent tribute to his splendid christian character, both having served him as pastor at different times.
From the calm and fearless manner in which he met the grim reaper, we are sure death had no terrors for him. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints."
Jerry Aron Collins, 67, of Hemphill, passed away Monday morning in his home. He was born in Center, Texas, to Aaron and Ora Phillips Collins. Later he owned and operated a convience store in Mauriceville. Jerry was active in the YMBL and the VFW in Vidor. He moved back to Hemphill ten years ago and was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Hemphill.
Jerry is survived by his sons Aron Collins and his wife Linnann of College Station, Michael Collins of the Baytown area, his granddaughter Grace Collins of College Station, his step-mother Chris Collins of Hemphill, his sisters; Jean Easley, Lillian Collins, Kay Collins of Hemphill, Vada Payne of Silsbee, Debbie Lane of Pineland.
