His Texas Death Certificate shows he was a son of Whitt CLEGG, born in Georgia, and Lucy THAMES, born in Texas. Edward was born in Texas, and worked as an oil field worker. He died in an automobile accident. A photo of his headstone can be found on FindAGrave. It is inscribed, "Thy Trials Ended Thy Rest is Won." On his headstone, his date of birth is instead listed as 11 Sept 1922, one year earlier than what his Texas Death Certificate shows (11 Sept 1923).

Mark Freeman noted that Lucretia 'Chrissy' Clifton was mentioned in will of her father William Clifton, Chester Co., SC 1803.
The McLemore & Maddox descendants website, an MSN group, has posted the following information about Lucretia and John: "John married his cousin, the Widow Patrick, sister to Claiborne Clifton. The Widow Patrick had one son Curtis Clifton, and a daughter Sarah. Curtis died unmarried; Sarah married Andrew Wallace. Major John McLemore had by his only one wife, John and Joel and a daughter Eliza. John married a Miss McMorris who had two sons, John and Mark, and one daughter Victoria. Eliza married William Meyer, and died childless."
James McLemore, III points out that "What does bother me is the reference by this Andrew Wallace to Major John's "only one wife". It lists three children by her, but aside from Eliza(beth) who married William Meyer, who was probably the daughter of Cressy or Crissy Clifton Patrick (the "Widow Patrick"), daughter of his father Joel's older sister Sarah who married Thomas Clifton, the two boys had to have been born before Cressy or Crissy was widowed by her first husband Mr. Patrick and she had married Major John - or they themselves had to have married and began producing their own children while they were still pre-teen boys! The chronology just won't admit of enough time for her to have been their mother. In addition, I have other children for Capt. Joel McLemore besides the three boys and one girl mentioned by Wallace, including a possible one named Matthew who after Joel's death appears along the Georgia/South Carolina border on or near land Joel supposedly held there, and who numbered among his own descendants (like your Joel III) issue named Joel and Howell, a strong indicator of the connection."

Obituary
Courtesy of Greenwood County Historical Society
Died of congestive chills, while on a visit to her son in Lyon County, after a few hours' illness Wednesday, October 11, 1876, Sally wife of Solomon Phenis of Madison, Greenwood County, Kansas, in the 54th year of her age.
The subject of this memoir was born March 6, 1823, in Marion county, Indiana. (Daughter of William & Charlotte Coats.) She was married to her now bereaved husband in 1839. They immigrated to Kansas in March 1855, and settled on Phenis creek, and moved from there to their present home on the Verdigris River in 1861.
Coming to Kansas in its earliest settlement, she necessarily met with all the privations of pioneer life, which she always bore with not only the greatest fortitude but was ever ready to extend a helping hand and sympathy to all who were less fortunate than she, as many a greatful heart will testify by a thrill of sadness upon hearing of her death. She acted well her part in all the relations of life, as wife, mother and neighbor. Though humble in life she was widely known by a large circle of friends and acquaintances; who extend their sympathies to the sadly bereaved family in this their hour of their sore affliction.
For consolation we would point the afflicted to the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world; and may they and we take warning by this dispensation, and ever be ready to meet the messenger when he comes.
Ken Harvey writes that she was "The family name Coats is believed to be associated with the "Coats-Clark" thread manufacturers.
William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, is supposed to have given to a forefather of Sallie Coats a tract of land including the Philadelphia waterfront. The fortunate ancestors were supposed to have been Bartholomew Coppack (original grantee) whose daughter Mary married Marmaduke Coate. Bartholomew also had sons. The idea is that the lease on this valuable land expired and that it should have reverted to the heirs.
Swindlers tell "heirs" in such cases that enormous corporations and banks are illegally conspiring to hold on to their property. A properly financed claim, they say, would return the "estate" to them. To launch a claim, the "heirs" must raise funds for attorney's fees and establish their lineages.
In this case Ethel A. Phenis was asked for $6 which in 1926 was quite a lot of money. There is no certainty that she paid. In such cases hungry and genealogically unsophisticated people often grafted the ancestry of somebody else onto their own family tree to prove their connection.
In her submission Ethel A. Phenis gave Sarah's total number of children as eight. They were listed as Newton, Isaac, Charlie, Rilley, Esley, Minna, Eva and Hannah. Her son gives the number as nine It is however very likely in my opinion that Cyrus, Esley, Newton, Eve and Ellsworth were not Sarah's children.
It was claimed by Ethel A. Phenis that Sallie's parents were William Coate and Lottie Wright but as there was a financial objective, see above, this data is possible more hopeful than factual and certainly needs confirmation.
Ethel was in contact, in 1923, with another presumed claiment who considered herself a cousin of Ethel. She was M.A. Coppock of Emporia, Kansas. At least she addressed her letter to "Dear Cousin" - possibly an assumption based on their mutual goal.
Mead McWethy would have known of the information that his mother had intended giving to the Ohio based Coppock-Coate Claimant Association in 1926. This particular Association was possibly a fraudulent exploitation of an arguably legitimate claim. It is unlikely that Ethel ever sent the $6 required as the original application is in the possession of Penny Ethlen Payne (1996) and Lunora McWethy (1996) thinks that her mother was unable to afford it at the time.
Mead McWethy states very clearly that there is very little reliable information available regarding Sallie Coats' parentage. He noted that all of Solomon and Sallie Phenis's children were deceased by 1956 and he seems to have had little patience with the claim, unlike his mother."

At the time of the 1910 census, Ezekiel and Rebecca were living in Vernon Parish, Louisiana. He was shown as Married twice, and Rebecca was shown as married once, both for three years. Rebecca was shown as the mother of one living child, which would have been two year old Mary Cobb. Also living in the home were Ezekiel's children from his prior marriage, Ethel, age 15, Florida, age 14, and Ottis age 10. All the children were shown as born in Texas. Also living in the house were Louis R and Ida Cobb, age 38 and 32. There were shown as husband and wife, but their relationship to Ezekiel was not indicated.
Newton County Historical Committee, "Glimpses of Newton County History," (Nortex Press, Burnet, Texas, c. 1982), pp. 155-156, references an Ezekiel Cobb who served in the Confederacy at two separate times during the Civil War. A 1863 letter to his wife Amanda was transcribed in this book. Perhaps he was the father of the Ezekiel Cobb, born ca 1860, who married Rebecca Eaves. In another publication, "Newton County Nuggets" (Nortex Press, 1986). p. 142, Hastie Phelps Cole wrote that "I married Hulen Curtis Cole on 23 Dec 1933. He was the son of Lee and Ethel Cobb Cole who also lived in the Survey Community. Ethel was the daughter of Ezekiel COBB, one of hte frist settlers in Survey and who died in 1864 while serving in the Confederate Army after enlisting a second time." This same books contains an excerpt from Pauline Hines notebook, dated 30 May 1945. She noted that "Mr. Rudd says Mr. Zeke Cobb's father hauled the lumber for this house from Alexandria, Louisiana (Pine Lumber) in the year 1847. Lumber was sawed by the old sash saw run by waterwheel--lumber ws in the rough and it was hand dressed on the Survey. Negro slaves did the rought work--Mr. Cogburn was the leading carpenter in this community at that time---Zeke said it took from two weeks to a month to make the trip. Approximately average "speed" fo ox team was two miles per hour." (p. 407).
