In December, 2001, Bobby Carter posted, on the Carter Family Genealogy Forum at Genforum:
"My, and others, research shows (not totally proven) that Allen Alexander was one of about five children born to Jacob Carter (born about 1799, South Carolina, died abt 1844 Lauderdale Co, MS), and Sarah (LNU).
Allen Alexander Carter was probably born in Barnwell District, South Carolina, about 1810, and migrated with the family to MS about 1812/1813. Apparently this Carter line did not settle in Georgia.
Allen Alexander Carter was an early settler in Clarke Co, MS, and was enumerated in the 1840, 1850, and 1860 census in Clarke Co, MS.
Allen's mother was enumerated in his household in the 1850 census, but must have died before 1860 as she was not enumerated in his household then.
Allen's older brother Patrick died about 1859 and one of Patrick's sons (I think it was Jacob) was enumerated in Allen's household in 1860.
Allen Alexander Carter married Sarah McLemore. Allen Alexander Carter (probably displaced by the Civil War), wife, and some of the younger children migrated to Texas by about 1866. The last I have been able to locate on Allen Alexander Carter (listed as 80) and Sarah is that they were enumerated in the 1880 census in Lampasas Co, TX."
Bobby also provided a list of their children, along with the estimated years of birth of each.

AMERICUS V. CARTER
Americus V. Carter, a prominent and honored citizen of Natchitoches Parish,
who resides two miles northeast of Robeline, is a native of Amite County,
Miss., born November 2, 1839. He was the son of Isaac F. and Margaret
(Holden) Carter, both natives also of the Bayou State, the former born in Pike
county and the latter in Amite County. The paternal grandparents of our
subject, William and Jemima (cole) Carter, were natives of South Carolina dn
the great grandfather, Isaac Carter, was a native of the Old Dominion. The
maternal grandparents, Thomas and Elizabeth (Flannigan) Holden, were born in
South Carolina. The parents of our subject were married in 1838, and reared a
family of four children, three sons and a daughter, whom we will now name in
the order of their birth: Americus V., William O., Elizabeth A. and Thadeus A.
Elizabeth A. died in July, 1889, leaving a husband and five children. The
father of Mr. Carter died in February, 1853, and his mother in 1878.
When Americus V. was about one year and half old, his parents removed to
Louisiana and located in Natchitoches Parish, on a plantation ten miles west
of the city of Natchitoches and four miles east of his present home. He
attended the parish schools, prepared himself for college at Bellewood, Sabine
Parish, and when eighteen years of age he entered Mount Lebannon College, of
Bienville Parish, which he attended during the years 1857 and 1858. He was
married September 20, of the last named year to Miss Martha Ponder, daughter
of Silas and Lucitta (Darden) Ponder, and sister of the late Hon. William A.
Ponder, of this parish. After his marriage Mr. Carter engaged in farming for
himself, and this has been his principal occupation all his life.
In 1862 he entered the service of the Confederate army, in Company E, Second
Louisiana Cavalry, as a second lieutenant, and served until the cessation of
hostilities, being promoted to first lieutenant during that time. He was in
the battle of Franklin, and was in numerous skirmishes. At the time of Bank's
raid, and while engaged in at tempting to drive him back, Mr. Carter was
captured at Henderson's Hill, Rapides, and was held a prisoner for about four
months, being exchanged in July, 1864. He had previously been captured in
1862, at Burwick City, but was paroled a day later. From the war he returned
home and resumed farming, his home then being on Spanish Lake.
In 1870 he removed to his present property, where he has resided ever since,
and where he has a beautiful and comfortable home. Besides farming he has
given some attention to merchandising and journalism. During the year 1885,
and also the year 1887, he owned and conducted a general store in Robeline.
In 1884 he bought the Robeline Reporter, of which his son, I. F. Carter, was
editor and he proprietor until January, 1886, when he sold it to Dr. J. H.
Cunningham. Mr. Carter was the editor of the Reporter in 1887, when it
belonged to a stock company. In September, 1889, he and his son, Ponder S.
Carter, purchased it, and under the name of Carter & Son, they conducted the
paper until 1890, when they sold it to S. C. Presley. Mr. Carter helped to
survey Robeline, and he built the first house in that city. He has since
erected several other residences, and is the owner of considerable property in
town. By reason of the above facts he is called "the father of Robeline."
Mr. and Mrs. Carter have seven children living as follows: Bessie, Isaac F.,
William E., Ponder S., Lillian Lee, Thadeus A. and A. Everly. Mr. and Mrs.
Carter are members of the Baptist Church, and in politics Mr. Carter is
strictly Democratic. He served as a member of the parish police jury from
1877 until 1880, and four years later he was reappointed to that position,
serving in that capacity ever since. During the entire time he has been a
member of that body he has been chairman of its finance committee, which is
evidence of the complete confidence reposed to him by the people of the
parish.
He was made a member of the Democratic Central Committee of the parish in 1872
and has served constantly ever since. He has also held the position of
returning officer of the parish since 1884. Mr. Carter is one of the
representative and leading citizens of Natchitoches Parish, and on one is more
favorably or extensively know. He is an active and prominent worker in the
Farmers' Alliance.

This cemetery is located north of Hwy 6 just east of the Pendleton Bridge. From the bridge go about 1 mile to Merritt Mtn. Road. Turn north and follow the road to the end. From this point you will have to climb the hill. The cemetery is about 200 yds. west of where the fire tower used to stand.
Most of these graves were marked with wooden plaques which have since faded away, but at the time transcribed were still readable. Lily Thurman knew where they were buried.
Carter Cemetery on Merritt Mountain, compiled by Lily Carter Thurman Jan. 1981.
Bradford Carter, his son Ben, and grandson, John Bradford owned and operated Carter's Ferry for many years. (White and Toole, p 41).
Leatha Betts, a descendant of his eldest daugther, Sarah Elizabeth, show that Bradford was married five times in total, and also indicates that he had three children with Frances Procell, though they were never married. Frances Procell was listed as a housekeeper, age 22, in his home at the time of the 1870 census. Frances Precell, shown as widowed, lived in the adjacent residence at the time of the 1880 census with her three children, Luisia, 14, William, 7, and Lizzie, 5.
Bradford's grave is marked "CSA Homeguards, Masonic Lodge #88"

Her father is listed as coming from South Carolina, and her mother from Lousiana. (Casagranda, 1850 Census, 89). Jerry Carter (jcarter427@hotmail.com) believes but has not proven absolutely that she is the daughter of Drucilla Carter Sheffield, to whom she was living next to at the time of the 1850 Sabine Parish Census. It is thought, but not proven, that Drucilla's maiden name is Wyatt. Near neighbors are Nancy Goff, a daughter of Drucilla, David and William Carter, sons of Drucilla. These are also the parents linked to her at her FindAGrave memorial page created by Travis D. Brown. This memorial page has a photo of a grave marker that includes elaborate engraving, a poem titled "Gone but Not Forgotten," a black and white portrait of Elizabeth, and "Mrs. Elizebeth McComic, Born Sept. 15, 1827 Died May 13, 1910, Age 82 Yrs, 9 mos, 2 days." The marker also has engraved at the bottom Copyright 04, by H. F. Wendell & Co., Leipaio, O.
. Others believe her to instead be a daughter of Redmond Carter and Nancy Kemp/Camp.
Barbara Yancey Dore instead shows her as Sara Elva Carter. Shown as Eloiuse on the 1900 census.

Besides farming, he helped his father and grandfather operate Carter's Ferry, and later he and his wife owned and operated cafes at various locations in East Texas. Virgie Speights, in November 1963, interviewed him prior to his upcoming eightieth birthday. He stated that he helped with the ferry "as soon as I was large enough." He recalled in great detail numerous incidents of feuding, fighting, and flight from the law. The ferry had previously been called the Paterson and Pugh Ferry, and the former owners met a tragic end, through such shenanigans. The river provided the Carters witha means of livelihood in many ways. They hauled pine knots to fire the boilers on various steamboats. Mr. Carter also made log runs down the Sabine River to Orange, which took 12 days and netted him $1 per day. They also raised cotton which they took to Robeline, Lousiana, necessitating they camp out during the trip.
In 1909, Mr. Carter came to Texas, walking from Pendleton to Strickland Crossing, where he caught a train to Browndell, worked in a sawmill for a week, and then came back to Pineland. There he worked various jobs, including curing some of the first logs sawed in the old Know Lumber Company Mill.

Melba Gene McLemore shows her as a daughter of James Uriah Carter (b. 1841 Alabama, d. 19 July 1913 Escambia, Florida) and Mary Moore (b. 25 Jun 1940 Macon, Alabama d. 10 Nov 1936, Brady, Texas).
It is being ASSUMED that the one year old Louisa, found on the 1860 Clarke County, Mississippi census is the same person as the 9 year old Lou Ellen found on the 1870 Freestone County, Texas census, and listed as 19 year old Lulu in Lampasas County, Texas in 1880. It is instead possible that Louisa died at a young age, and had a younger sister also named "Lou."

Called Mollie. At the time of the 1900 Sabine County census, her date of birth was instead shown as August 1879, as was that of her brother, Albert, living with Mollie and James in 1900. It appears they were twins. However other records seem to indicate their year of birth as 1882.
At the time of the 1910 Sabine County Census, they had been shown as married for 11 years, and as the mother of six children, all living.
Her FindAGrave memorial page, created by Jeff Hubbard, shows her as Mary Lou Carter Carter, the wife of Aaron CARTER (1874-?).

Hoping to share information on the ancestors and descendants of Mirabeau B.
Lamar Carter and his brother, Jesse L. Carter.
They were both born in GA (1848-1852) to James D. Carter and his wife, Mary
E. Harris. The parents died about 1854 in Talbot County Georgia. The two
Carter boys were raised by their maternal grandfather, Gray Harris, and/or
their maternal aunt, Julia Amanda Harris who married Thomas Jefferson Ritch.
Mirabeau B. went to Texas. His brother, Jesse L., stayed in GA or maybe
moved to FL. Both had sons, so perhaps some other Carter researcher has
more information and an interest in sharing information on this line of
Carters. DNA evidence is welcomed. :-)
The following is what I have pieced together:
First Generation:
Kindred CARTER married Ruth (--?--). He was born about 1749/50. He died
about 1800 Columbia County Georgia.
Second Generation:
James CARTER was born about 1773 in North Carolina. He married Eleanor
"Ellen" DUCKWORTH, daughter of Jeremiah DUCKWORTH and Christiana RAMSEY,
before 1798, maybe in Warren County Georgia.
Third Generation:
James D. CARTER married Mary E. HARRIS, daughter of Gray HARRIS and Nancy
FULLER, on 8 Jun 1847 in Stewart County Georgia. He died about 1854 in
Talbot County Georgia. Mary E. Harris, his wife, also died about the same
time.
Fourth Generation:
Mirabeau B. Lamar CARTER was born on 8 Apr 1848 in Georgia and died in
Shelby County Texas at the age of 79. (Note that his namesake was a famous
Texan, but Mirabeau was definitely born in Georgia.)
He married Malinda Francis ?Fannie? Harris (kinship, if any, to his
mother's Harris line is unknown).
He appeared in the 14 Aug 1860 Muscogee County Georgia Census, age 12,
living in the household of his maternal grandfather, Gray Harris.
He appeared on the 1880 Sabine County Texas Census (p. 247B) as M. B.
Carter, farmer, age 30, born in Georgia. His father and mother were both
born in Georgia.
Also enumerated was his wife, Fannie Carter, age 26, keeping house, and
born in Mississippi. Both her father and mother were born in Alabama. They
had son, James I. (or J.) Carter, aged 3 and born in Texas, enumerated in
their 1880 household.
Mirabeau B. Carter died on 8 Jan 1928 in Shelby County Texas, at age 79.
He was buried about 10 Jan 1928 in Center Cemetery, Shelby County Texas.
(Note: In the 1880 Sabine Co Texas Census, the household of Alfred P.
Harris was enumerated next door to M. B. Carter. Kinship is unknown, but it
is probable that he was the brother of ?Fannie? Harris Carter. He was:
Alfred P. Harris, farmer, 23, MS (f. AL, m. AL); Sarah J. Harris, keeps
house, wife, 25, Georgia, (f. Georgia, m. Georgia); Lula B. Harris, dau, 3,
Texas; Minnie L. Harris, dau, 2, Texas; Ella M. Harris, dau, 1 Texas; Nora
Harris, dau, 3 mos, Texas.)
Jesse L. CARTER was born about 1852 in Georgia. He appeared on the 14 Aug
1860 Muscogee County Georgia Census, age 8, in the household of his maternal
grandfather, Gray Harris.
He appeared on the 30 Jun 1870 Muscogee County Georgia Census, age 17, in
the household of his maternal Aunt and her husband, Thomas & Julia Amanda
Harris Ritch.
He appeared on the 1880 Muscogee County Georgia Census (p. 612C), as J. L.
Carter, age 27, and born in Georgia; also enumerated was Susan Carter, age
25, and born in Georgia. Susan is presumed to be the mother of his two
sons, but her relationship is listed as ?Other.? Both her father and mother
were born in Georgia. There were two sons: Jim, 3, and Clarence, 1.
