Nathaniel J. Caraway served as a major in the 11th Texas Infantry until his death on May 10, 1864.
He was born in 1835 in Mississippi, the son of Vestal and Eliza Young Caraway. On December 20, 1855, he married Mary Ann Speights in Hemphill, Texas. Four children were born of the marriage: Vestal H. (born 1857), L.E.R. (born 1859), Clara (born 1862) and Nathaniel J., Jr. (born November 28, 1864, a little more than six months after the death of his father)
Captain N.J. Caraway' s Company was mustered into the 11th Texas Infantry by Col. O.M. Roberts on February 17, 1862 in Hemphill, Texas. He was elected major on April 9, 1862.
As part of Randal's Brigade, Walker's Division, Major Caraway and his regiment were heavily engaged in numerous actions in Arkansas and Louisiana, including the battles of Bayou Bourbeau, Mansfield, and Pleasant Hill.
On April 30,1864, Major Caraway was mortally wounded during the futile confederate charges at the Battle of Jenkin's Ferry in Arkansas. Captured on the field by union troops, he was taken to a hospital in or near Little Rock. He died on May 10, 1864. His slave was allowed by federal authorities to take his horse, saber, and scabbard back to his widow, Mary Ann, in Hemphill.
The saber and scabbard have been passed down to the firstborn son in the direct line of descent, beginning with William Vestal Caraway.
Major Caraway was originally in Company F of his regiment. The sargeant of the company was Caraway's brother-in-law, Green William Speights. Sargeant Speights survived the war and is buried in Hemphill, Texas.
Mary Ann Speights Caraway eventually moved to Logansport, Louisiana. She died in 1910 and is buried in Logansport near her youngest child, Nathaniel J. Caraway, Jr. Nathaniel J. Caraway, Jr. founded N.J. Caraway general store in Logansport, which has been in continuous operation ever since.
Major Caraway's middle name is believed to be Jackson.
Caraway's younger brother was William Rutillous Caraway, who served in the 27th Texas Cavalry until its surrender in May, 1865. After the war, he returned home to Shelbyville, Texas and eventually moved to Logansport, Louisiana, where he died in 1920.
Nathaniel Caraway's younger brother was William Rutillous Caraway, who served in the 27th Texas Cavalry until its surrender in May, 1865. After the war, he returned home to Shelbyville, Texas and eventually moved to Logansport, Louisiana, where he died in 1920. His great-great grandson, Robert E. Caraway emailed in September 2012 that William R. was buried in Brookeland Cemetery in Haslam, Texas.
I also found his widow's 2nd marriage: Liber D, page 1; Cynthia F. Smith, 37, of Odessa, bpl ME, on 10-8-1882 at Orange, Ionia Co, MI, marr Cornelius Center, 57, b Orleans Co, NY, farmer. Witnesses were Peter J. and Mary Fellows, both of Odessa.
It seems Cynthia's new surname should be spelled Senters, according to Lakeside cem records. There's a Cynthia F. Senters who d age 74 6-10-1918 (from the great 1918 influenza epidemic?). She d in Woodland, so there's another Barry Co record to find.

It appears that William Quitman Carlton is a son of Henry Harrison Carlton and his wife Laura Bolton. However, this might be another William Carlton, as per the note below.

Per OLDTIMERS OF SABINE COUNTY "Mrs. Florence Carrico White celebrated her 87th birthday at her home in the Pinehill Community on Sunday, July 20, 1969. The day began pretty much as usual for Mrs. White, who lives alone, getting up a little later than she used to, to prepare her breakfast. A few friends and members of the family stopped in before she went to church to wish her well, but when the church services ended, Rev. Holt and the entire congregation went home with Mrs. White for a surprise birthday party. She was really surprised. Other friends and relatives were waiting there to help her celebrate with gifts and refreshments. Out of county visitors for the day included Mr. and Mrs. Alan V. White and infant son of Houston; Mr and Mrs Charlie Lane of Jasper, Mr and Mrs Lewis Rigsby and children, Cathy and Kyle, of Beaumont; and Miss Gale White of Nacogdoches. Mrs. White, the wife of the late R.W. White of Pinehill, was born in Panola County, near the little town of Gary. Her parents were William David and Mary Charlotte Gary Carrico, the daughter of James Henry Gary, born in Alabama. He came to East Texas with his brothers, Govey and Ike, and many of their descendants still live in East Texas. James Wilkerson, early Indian fighter and hero of San Jacinto, was Mrs. White's paternal grandparents (sic). He too left many descendants in East Texas."

Said to be a son of Matthew CARRICO and Rachel WILKERSON.
White and Toole write "Matthew Carrico... Received a land grant of 640 acres of land for services in the Tex. Rev. at Goliad...Rachel Wilkerson's (father)...James Wilkerson, received a grant in Bexar County for services in Capt. Teal's company during the Texas Revolution. James Wilkerson was a Texas Ranger and Indian fighter under Capt. Mabbitt of Shelby County, receiving his last pay for this service in 1852 at old Fort Houston. (White and Toole, p 72).
However, Nell Carrico Denova emailed that "Although Rachael Wilkerson Carrico's father, listed in the White and Toole book, "Sabine County Historical Sketches and Genealogical Records", is shown as being James Wilkerson, I still can't find anything on him, in the Texas Revolution or his army papers, or Texas Ranger, or anything. I'm not able to find out who his wife--Rachel's mother--was either.Rachael. My sister, Fran and I have made several trips to Panola, but never one to Sabine, but we need to find some of the family that is living, and ask if any of them may know who Rachel's mother was, or if in fact, James was her father, and not a DAVID Wilkinson.

At the time of the 1860 census, he was living with what appears to be a second wife, as she is some 30 years younger than he. Her name is also Elizabeth, as was his first wives name. Monica Hightower, on the Genforum "Carroll" Message board stated that his second wife was Elizabeth BEARDING. It is assumed the youngest children in the household at 1860 were those of Elizabeth BEARDING, and presumably Alfred.
