[Ed: Note: Joab Smith's daughter, Caroline E Smith, was Peter McLemore Smith's third wife.]
Born on 30 Apr 1632 at England. Baptized in Nov 1632 at Hadleigh, Suffolk, Eng. Philip died at Hadley, MA, on 10 Jan 1685. The son of Samuel SMITH and Elizabeth CHILEAB.
Philip, first of Wethersfield, removed to Hadley after 1659.
Philip was one of the first men of his time to be a lieutenant, deacon, and representative in Hadley. He was "murdered with an hideous witchcraft" according to Cotton Mather.
Some quotations from Lawson's web pages follow.
From The Magnalia Christi Americana, by Cotton Mather - 1702.
Mr. Philip Smith, aged about 50 years, a son of eminently virtuous parents, a
deacon of a church in Hadley, a member of the General Court, a justice in the
County Court, a selectman for the affairs of the town, a Lieutenant of the troop, and
which crowns all, a man for devotion, sanctity, gravity, and all that was honest,
exceeding exemplary. Such a man was in the winter of the year 1684, murdered
with an hideous witchcraft, that filled all those parts of New England, with
astonishment. He was, by his office concerned about relieving the indigences of a
wretched woman in the town; who being dissatisfied at some of his just cares about
her, expressed herself unto him in such a manner, that he declared himself
thenceforth apprehensive of receiving mischief at her hands. Early in January, he
began to be very valetudinarious. He shewed such weanedness from the weariness
of the world, etc.... While he remained yet of a sound mind, he solemnly charged
his brother to look well after him. Be sure (said he) to have a care for me.... There
shall be a wonder in Hadley.... In his distress he exclaimed much upon the young
woman aforesaid, and others, as being seen by him in the room. Some of the young
men in the town being out of their wits at the strange calamities thus upon one of
their most beloved neighbors, went three or four times to give disturbance unto the
woman thus complained of; and all the while they were disturbing her, he was at
ease, and slept as a weary man; yea, these were the only times they perceived him to
take any sleep in all his illness. Gally pots of medicine provided for the sick man
were unaccountably emptied: audible scratchings were made about the bed, when his
hands and feet lay wholly still, and were held by others. They beheld fire sometimes
on the bed; and when the beholders began to discourse of it, it vanished away.
Divers people actually felt something often stir in the bed, at a considerable distance
from the man; it seemed as big as a cat, but they could never grasp it. Several trying
to lean on the bed's head, tho' the sick man lay wholly still, the bed would shake so
as to knock their heads uncomfortably. Mr. Smith dies; the jury that viewed his
corpse found a swelling on one breast, his back full of bruises, and several holes
that seemed made with awls. After the opinion of all had pronounced him dead, his
countenance continued as lively as if he had been alive; his eyes closed as in a
slumber, and his nether jaw not falling down. Thus he remained from Saturday
morning about sunrise, till Sabbathday in the aftenoon. When those who took him
out of the bed, found him still warm, tho' the season was as cold as had almost been
known in any age; and a New England winter does not want for cold. But on
Monday morning they found the face extremely tumified and discolored. It was
black and blue, and fresh blood seemed running down his cheek upon the hairs.
Divers noises were also heard in the room where the corpse lay; as the clattering of
chairs and stools, whereof no account could be given. This was the end of so good a
man.
From History of Hadley, by Sylvester Judd - 1863.
Mary Webster, the woman who disturbed Philip Smith, was sent to Boston, tried
for witchcraft, and acquitted. The young men of Hadley tried an experiment upon
her. They dragged her out of the house, hung her up until she was near dead, let her
down, rolled her some time in the snow, and at last buried her in it, and there left
her. But she survived, and died in 1696. No inhabitant of Hampshire Co. was ever
executed for witchcraft.
From Families of Early Hartford, Connecticut, by Lucius Barnes Barbour - 1976.
William Webster s. of John & Agnes died 1688 mar Feb 17, 1670 Mary Reeve who
died 1696 dau of Thomas Reeve of Springfield. Hadley; his wife was accused of
witchcraft and sent to Boston for trial 1684, but was acquitted and died in peace.

Phineas was a son of Bezaleel and Lovinia (Munson) Smith of Whately, Massachusetts.
He married Electa Marsh on 15 Aug. 1814 in Whately. They were the parents of: Edwin G., Lovina M., Amelia, Elizabeth, Amanda E., Mary Jane, Julia L., Henry C., John Jay and Abigail M. Smith. Edwin, Elizabeth and Abigail all have memorials on FindAGrave.
Phineas served as a Sergeant in Capt. Southworth Jenkins' company, Col. Thomas Langley's regiment, Massachusetts militia in the War of 1812. His company was sent from Franklin County to Boston to defend against the attack of the British fleet that was then threatening the Massachusetts coast. He was honorably discharged on 15 October at Boston.
The family moved to Monroe county, New York, about 1816, and settled on a farm in the town of Ogden. Phineas and Electa, as well as some of their children, moved to Fairfax county, Virginia, sometime between 1850 and 1860, but evidently returned to New York within a few years as Phineas died in Bergen, Genesee county, in 1864.

(Research):The B'nai Abraham and Yehuda Laib Family Society website, founded in Baltimore in 1901 by relatives of Yehuda Laib Romm and Rabbi Abraham Abramson, and believed to be the oldest Jewish Family society in the world. They held their 115th anniversary reunion on Labor Day weekend 2016. Tillie Levine, Mamie Yatovitz, Rachel Silver Snovsky and Henna Ginsburg became members in 1912.
B'nai Abraham and Yehuda Laib Family Society membership and its associated family tree revolves around a woman named Rella Krok, who was born about 1833. Her father, Laibe Krok, was born in 1800. Laibe and his wife Rachel Krok lived in the tiny hamlet of Tselkay / Celkiai, just south of Rokisik / Roki?kis, a town in an area which today is in the northeastern part of the Republic of Lithuania. In the 1800s, the area was first in the Vilna Gubernya (province) and then in the Kovno Gubernya of the Russian Empire. Prior to 1795, the area was part of the Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania. There is evidence that Laibe Krok's ancestors lived in this area at least as early as 1760.
The family tradition states that Laibe and Rachel "were good citizens, religious in their observance of Mosaic Law, and liberal in their outlook on life. Laibe Krok was a wine merchant and the owner of a distillery. He was a philanthropist of no mean repute."
Rella was one of Laibe and Rachel's six children. In 1847 Rella married Yehuda Laib Romm of Ponidel / Pandelys. Yehuda Laib was a widower with one child, Mari Leah Romm. Yehuda Laib and Rella had seven children together. After the death of Yehuda Laib, Rella married Rabbi Abraham Abramson, who was a sofer in Rakisik and a nephew of Yehuda Laib's first wife. Abraham was a widower who had had seven children with his first wife, Chana Brina. Upon marrying Abraham, Rella was the mother or step-mother of a total of fifteen children.
Rella and Abraham Abramovitz were recorded in the 1897 All-Russia Census as living on Kamai street (today, Respublikos gatve) in Rakisik. Fourteen years after they married, Rella died and Abraham came to America . According to family tradition, Abraham had served Roki?kis as Chief Rabbi for 25 years before coming to America.
As of the BAYL's 100th Anniversary, in 2001, the family tree, tracing the descendants of Rella and her siblings and the descendants of her two husbands from their first marriages, spanned nine generations over more than 200 years, contained more than 3200 names. Today, descendants live in many of the United States, as well as in Australia, Canada, England, Israel, and South Africa.
Bonnie Seiler shows that he married Rhoda GOODRICK. Shelia Smith instead shows her as Rhonda GOODRICH, and adds they were the parents of Harvey Lee Raeford Smith, Alene Smith, and Herman Smith.
90th Birthday Join us in celebrating the 90th birthday of Reece SMITH on Sunday, April 27, 2003, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Family Farm, off Hwy 87, north of Milam.

Robert H. Smith entered Coahuila-Texas sponsored by Sam Houston. He bought the Sion Smith Headright and paid for it four thousand red gold dollars. He is listed on the first census of Texas with parents, John and Mary Smith. Their home was on the Pineland Road west of Hemphill, and they are buried in the Smith Cemetery, now known as the Old Whitehead Cemetery. When Robert sold this land he reserved a fifty foot square of land for the preservation of the cemetery. This family was from North Carolina and was related to the Pace family, early pioneers of Sabine County. Robert H. Smith married Mary Johnson, and their home was where the Roy Payne home is now. He raised fine horses, farmed, was a real estate dealer, and a member of the Littleton Fowler Masonic Lodge, which buried him with full honors when he died Sept. 20, 1867 (White and Toole, p 56).
Robert Perry "Country" Smith, 85, of Milam, TX, passed away June 30, 2019. Born on August 24, 1933 to Obediah Hillis Smith and Elsie Hoffman Smith, in Milam, TX, he grew up in Beaumont, TX, but would always feel the pull of his birthplace over the years.
Robert attended South Park High School and graduated in 1950. He met his sweetheart, Junell Fore, and they married in 1951. He worked in the oil and gas industry and moved multiple times from Beaumont to Louisiana and to west Texas, before settling in Vidor, TX where he and Junell raised their three sons. His employment led him to Sulphur, LA where he retired from PPG Industries. After Junell's death in 1993, Robert married his current love, Lennie Webb.
Robert and Lennie moved to his childhood home of Milam, TX, where he pursued his pleasures of hunting, fishing, working on his property, being a member of Bethany Baptist Church and staying dutifully active in Masonic studies and activities, which he has done his whole adult life. A man of integrity and honesty, Robert was a member of the several Masonic lodges and espoused education and volunteerism.
Robert is preceded in death by his mother Elsie Hoffman Smith, father Obediah Hillis Smith, brothers William Hillis Smith, James Edward Smith, sister Marie Smith Roma; and his former wife Junell Fore Smith. He is survived by his wife Lennie Webb Smith, brothers John Terry Smith and Walter Truett Smith, his sons Robert Perry Smith, Jr. (of Nashville, TN), Clay Allen Smith (of Leesville, LA), and Justin Blane Smith (of Houston, TX), son-in-law Kevin Johnson, former daughter-in-law Gena Purkey Smith Boyte, grandson Grayson Fielding Smith and granddaughter Alexandra Parker Smith and great grandson Braylan Adam Smith.

His descendant, Sherilyne "Sam" Palmer wrote, in April 2013, that Samuel Henry was a blacksmith, like his father, Obediah Smith (wife Matilda UNKNOWN). Obediah and Matilda were in Logan Co, KY in 1840 Census and in 1880 Census. Samuel Henry Smith and his wife, Mary Elizabeth, moved to Texas by train in 1891, near Dallas. They lived in Dallas Co., and Tarrant Co. In 1896, they lived near Plano; in 1897-1899, a blacksmith in Rhome. Early 1900's a blacksmith shop in Farmer's Branch; 1901 in Denton. Their last child, Tate Lyle Smith, was born in/near Renner (?), TX in 1892. Their daughter, Lue Ella Smith, got sick while moving from Plano to Rhome and they stayed in a hotel in/near Grapevine. She died in the hotel (from T.B.?) in 1899. Samuel H. bought lots for all of them in Grapevine Cem. in 1899. (from his journal entries)

Francis and Margaret were in 1870 Census, Logan Co, KY under Household of John W. Lamb and wife Mary. Lambs were neighbors to Obediah Smith (Frank's father). I believe that if Goodwin McLemore's wife was Mary Lamb -- her relatives were the neighbors to the Smith's and were the ones who took Hiram McLemore as a boarder when his parents, John and Caroline, died. By the age of 40, Sophia Smith had become quite deaf, and even the use of an ear trumpet did not counter the growing isolation that her hearing loss engendered in the years to follow. The death of her siblings Harriet (in 1859) and Austin (in 1861) left Sophia Smith wealthy but alone. In the final decade of her life, she was faced with the difficult decision of how to dispose of the considerable Smith family fortune. What led her, during that period, to her determination to devote the largest part of that fortune -- $387,468 -- to establish a women's college in Northampton? "Miss Smith often spoke of her childhood and her youth. She retained vivid and pleasant recollections of them. I think she regarded them as the happiest periods of her life." John M. Greene, "Sophia Smith," Hampshire Gazette and Northampton Courier, 2 March 1914
Because few family records survive, little is known about Sophia's early years. Her journal, which she kept for the last nine years of her life, is primarily a record of her spiritual development but also includes discussions of events of the day, her travels, and the books she was reading.
"The past week has been a trying one on some accounts. My girl domestic has been very disorderly. She seems very wilful, throwing off all restraint, setting her own will in defiance of rule and authority. I have already put up with more from her than is consistent with a proper dignity as mistress of the house. I want wisdom from above to get along with her. "Sophia Smith, Journal entry, 27 June 1864
Sophia became an expert spinner and housewives were anxious to obtain her fine thread in return for other commodities. -- Nor was Sophia an extravagant housekeeper. There is a story that she scolded her maid so severely when she found her about to use an egg in a loaf of ginger bread that the maid lost her temper and threw the egg at her mistress. Marion Billings, unpublished paper on Sophia Smith
While many girls of her era were given a meager formal education, Sophia appears to have had more educational advantages than most and demonstrated a keen thirst for knowledge. Her pastor, John M. Greene, recalls Sophia telling her that as a girl she used to sit on the steps of the schoolhouse in the morning and hear the boys recite their lessons, "with the hope of picking up there some crumbs of knowledge," as girls in Hatfield at that time received their lessons only in the afternoon. She read avidly and widely throughout her life. Such passion -- which included poetry and prose, newspapers and magazines of social, political and literary commentary -- not only portended her future contributions but may also have helped her endure the tragedies of her adulthood.
Besides the schools in Hatfield, Sophia Smith attended a school in Hartford, Conn., for twelve weeks when she was fourteen years old. After this she was a pupil for a time in what was later known as the Hopkins Academy in Hadley
For help with her decision for the disposition of her fortune, Sophia Smith turned to her pastor, John Morton Greene, as well as other advisors. Among the options considered were bequests to Amherst College (Rev. Greene's alma mater) and to the nearby Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, which had been educating young women since 1837. Initially, Sophia settled on a variety of projects, including a school for the deaf -- a logical choice in light of her own struggles with impaired hearing. Smith College may, at least in part, owe its very existence to the fact that John Clarke died before she did, endowing a school for the deaf (today the acclaimed Clarke School in Northampton) and prompting Sophia to abandon her plan.
The "Last Will and Testament of Miss Sophia Smith" was not completed until March of 1870, only three months before she died but nine years (and many revisions) after first meeting about the matter with John Greene. This final version supported "the establishment and maintenance of an Institution for the higher education of young women, with the design to furnish for my own sex means and facilities for the education equal to those which are afforded now in our Colleges to young men."
The will also made three gifts to religious societies and eighteen female relatives, and it provided for the establishment of the Smith Academy in Hatfield for the education of both sexes, requiring, too, that "the number of female teachers shall be equal or one less than that of the male teachers" and that the female teachers must have a voice in the management of the School...."
When Sophia Smith died in June 1870, her obituary appeared in the same issue of the Hampshire Gazette and Northampton Courier that announced the death of Charles Dickens and the first annual meeting of theWomen's Suffrage Committee of Hampshire County.
"Miss Sophia Smith died on Sunday, at the advanced age of 74 years. She was well known in all this section as a lady of great wealth, of benevolent disposition and blameless and irreproachable life. She was the sister of Austin Smith, and received from him and a sister, property to the amount of $200,000. In addition, she had some $30,000 from the estate of her father. A few years since she gave $30,000 to Andover Theological Seminary, and she also gave liberally toward founding a public library in the town of Hatfield. Her private charities were numerous and her memory will be cherished with affection by a large circle who have been recipients of her benefactions."
