After the war he sold his tannery and removed to Poultney, Vermont, where he purchased a farm. He owned one right in the Susquehannah Purchase as an original proprietor. (Milford Land Record Book 24, pp. 363, 561).
Oliver was a Deacon in the Baptist Church for many years. He was a farmer in Poultney, Vermont.
On 25 May 1795, Oliver and Catharine Green Sanford signed a quit claim of all rights in the Susquehanna Purchase, which had been willed by their father Robert Green to his children. The estate was distributed 29 August 1846.
Reuben settled in Jay, New York about 1800. He removed to Wilmington, New York where he started a potashery, opened a hotel, and before 1820 erected a forge which he conducted until 1849. He served as Supervisor and Postmaster; was a member of the Assembly 1815-1817 and State Senator 1828-1831, and a member of Constitutional Convention in 1821. An article about him was published on the front page of "The Plattsburgh Sentinel", Vol. 35, No. 48, published on Friday, April 18, 1890. It was one of a series about 'noted men and women of the Champlain Valley and the Adirondacks,' and stated that although it had been nearly 35 years since he departed this life, his name is familiar to the people on the line of the Ausable River, and many in all of Northern New York. The article noted his homestead was currently owned by son-in-law Elisha Adams. The article mentioned he had moved to his mountain home, then a wilderness, with his wife in 1805. He was said to be one of the leading Methodists of Wilmington, with the fine brick church of that village built at his expense. Amos Avery, a son-in-law, settled in Wilmington in 1822, and Elisha A. KIRBYVILLE ? Funeral for Irene Sargent Christian, 84, will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Kirbyville First Baptist Church with burial in the Kirbyville Cemetery under the direction of Causey's E. E. Stringer Funeral Home.
Mrs. Christian died at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Mixson Memorial Hospital. A native of Angelina County, she was reared in Tyler County and moved to Kirbyville in 1908.
Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Blake of Kirbyville, Vallie Dee Richardson and Josephine Matthews, both of Houston; four sons, R. W. Christian of Houston, B.F. Christian of Channelview, Raymond Christian of Porter, Tex., and Weyman Christian of Kirbyville.
Funeral services for Mary Margaret Sargent Hyden, 71 of Jasper, will be 2:00pm Saturday, May 25, 2013, at First Baptist Church of Jasper with burial to follow at Ebenezer Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00pm, Friday, May 24, 2013, at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home Chapel in Jasper.
Mary Margaret passed away on May 22, 2013 at Rayburn Healthcare Rehabilitation. Mary Margaret was born in Jasper at Richardson Hospital on July 27, 1941 to Herman Eual and Phoebe McMahon Sargent. She was the oldest of three red headed and freckle faced children. With the birth of their child, Herman and Phoebe's home buzzed with activity as they had three children in cloth diapers all below the age of three. Herman had to build a fence around the open faced wood heater that was located in the home's living room to keep the three toddlers from tossing their overalls into the fire.
Mary Margaret married Dennis Earsel Hyden on December 31, 1960. They met at the age of nine and were married 52 years. On the day he met Mary Margaret, Dennis went home and told his older sister Dixie, " I'm gonna marry that red headed girl when I grow up." And he did. They had two daughters, Pamela Jean and Paula Ann. Mary Margaret felt blessed to have been born, raise her daughters and live her final days surrounded by family and friends in her hometown.
An accomplished pianist, Mary Margaret took her first piano lesson when she was ten-years old. She was the pianist for North Baptist Church in Jasper for more than twenty years. During high school, she was an active member of the Jasper High School Pep Squad. She graduated high school in 1959 and went on to complete her education by graduating from Tyler Business College. She returned to Jasper after college and went to work for Mac's Studio as a professional portrait and wedding photographer. She spent 13 years behind the camera recording memories. She also processed photographs in the dark room, touched up portraits with a paintbrush and built custom frames. After taking time off when her children were young, she went to work for Jasper Independent School District as a bookkeeper in the accounts payable department. In later years, she transferred within the school district to work in the classroom with developmentally challenged students until her retirement.
Mary Margaret was blessed with lifelong friends like Ann Dover, Linda Weaver, Brenda McDonald and the late Kay Byerly. In later years, she often expressed deep admiration and gratitude for all the love shown and visits from her special friend Jean Green. Her very best friend was her sister-in-law Dixie Hyden Cooper. Over the years the two shared much laughter and even a few tears together.
Mary Margaret loved to swim in the community creek with her grandchildren. She loved all of her grand and great grandchildren. She enjoyed taking long drives down country roads with her husband on a Sunday afternoon, working in her flowerbeds, growing ferns, arranging flowers, listening to the religious channel on television, banana split blizzards and listening to her daughters talk and laugh. She was mesmerized by the shape of a dead tree standing alone in a pasture against a blue sky. The sound of a sole piano always made her smile.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dennis Hyden; two daughters Pam Rogers & husband Forrest and Paula Stephenson & husband Reagan, of Jasper; six grandchildren Joshua Anthony Williams & wife Megan, Jenny Lynn Mosley & husband Brent, Tamera Eakin, Ashley Letney, William James Rogers, and Aaron Donald Stephenson; four great grandchildren, and ten nieces and nephews, brother Homer Gerald Sargent and wif, Jo Ann Hancock Sargent, and her oldest living relative 98 year old Uncle Homer Issac Sargent.
Mary Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Herman Eual and Phoebe McMahon Sargent , brother Arthur Herman Sargent, granddaughter Heather Fay Stephenson, father-in-law I.D. Hyden, mother-in-law Davada Divatha William Hyden, nephew Rory Glen Kelley.
Services are under the direction of Stringer & Grffin Funeral Home in Jasper.

As noted in the "Memoirs of John A. Benkelman" by Hilda Jane Stickley Benkelman, when Catherine and Adam first immigrated to the United States, they lived with her brother Johann Scheifle in Erie County New York. I was, however, unable to locate a Johann/John Scheifle on either the 1850 or 1860 census. I did find a Gottlieb Scheifly on both however.
Hilda Jane further wrote that "Catherine was a favorite in the community. She was jolly and fat, a very good cook of German style dishes, and a mother to everyone in the neighborhood. A good midwife, she was called in by the neighbors in case of sickness or for confinements as there were few doctors around at that time. She helped bring more than 100 babies into the world. "
Catherine made a home for her nephew, Leonard Buerhly, when he first came to Cass City. Leonard was the son of her sister Marie.

Died Suddenly
Mrs. Catherine Benkelman, aged eighty-three years, died suddenly at her home on East Main street Sunday evening, December 23. While eating with Mrs. M. M. Schwegler she suddenly became unconscious from which condition she did not recover. She has been troubled with heart disease for many years.
Catherine Scheifele was born August 23, 1823 in Boertlingen, Germany. In the year 1837 she was confirmed. She was united in marriage to Adam Benkelman in Germany in 1851 and they came to America the same year, living in Bowmansville, N.Y., until 1865. That year they came to Cass City, residing on a farm northeast of town. By hard work and frugal living Mr. and Mrs. Benkelman acquired a goodly portion of property and in 1884 they retired from active life and move to town to spend their remaining days. Mr. Benkelman died nine year ago on the 27?sup?th?/sup? of December and nearly ever since that time Mrs. Benkelman had resided with Mrs. M.M. Schwegler on east Main street, the ladies enjoying each other's companionship to the fullest extent. Mr. and Mrs. Benkelman were the parents of seven children, one daughter dying at the age of fifteen. The remaining children, five sons and one daughter, are: George A. of St. Francis, Kansas, William F. of Owosso, Benjamin F., Samuel G. and John A. Benkelman and Mrs. Louisa Schwegler of this place. She also leaves twenty-five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
All her children were present at the funeral services which took place Thursday forenoon at the Evangelical church of which the deceased was an honored and beloved member, and the burial was made in Elkland cemetery. The pallbearers were five sons and a grandson, W.J. Schwegler. The funeral service was largely attended.
Mrs. Benkelman was a lady of beautiful character, loving and kind in disposition and will be missed by many who found in her a good neighbor and friend.

Gottlieb would have been born ca. 1825. Kathy Bonnell's transcription of Baptismal records do not show a son named Gottlieb born at that time. Catherine did have a brother Johannes born ca. 1828. Could his middle name be Gottlieb? Could he be the child named Gottlob born ca 1830? The baptismal records, however, show that son died ca. 1843.
Ingholf Vogel, from the SURNAME-ORIGINS-L@rootsweb.com, writes that "Scheifele and Sch?ufele are the same name. Scheifele is the way people would say Sch?ufele (shovel) in parts of south-western Germany. I'm sure an expert on Suabian and Allamanian could tell you exactly which regions say Sch?ufele and which say Scheifele. If you ever visit the area ask the locals. I'm always surprised that some can even tell where others are from (even the village !) just by the sound of their dialect.
As for the meaning - that could be: 1) Suabian for fruit trader. 2) South-West German from Sch?ufele for a small shovel for a person that worked with the same.
The spelling of the name today is based simply on how one of your ancestors pronounced it or on how a certain priest wrote in down. It may be that one of the explanations is more likely for a particular region than another - but that's another question for the regional specialists.
BonnieMargaret Jacobs, in her 1981 unpublished manuscript about the Benkelman family, cites the same meaning.

Appendicitis Causes Death of Clayton A. Schenck
Was Ill But Two Weeks; Funeral Friday Afternoon at Evangelical Church
Clayton A. Schenck passed away Wednesday morning following an operation for appendicitis which he underwent at Pleasant Home hospital Monday evening. He had been ill about two weeks.
Clayton Arthur Schenck was born on the Schenck farm two miles northwest of Cass City on May 30, 1891. He attended the public school here until he completed the tenth grade and then devoted his attention to farming, assisting his father, Travis Schenck, on the latter's farm.
On April 29, 1913, he was united in marriage with Miss Alma Striffler and to this union two children were born.
Mr. Schenck has been a member of the Evangelical church since 1914 and was very active and faithful in the various church organizations and services. He was also an efficient member of the Cass City Band. He was a young man of strong character and clean habits. It is hard to give up one whose influence among men has been for good and who by precept and example was so well calculated to spread abroad the influence of godly living. The community extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.
Besides his wife and two small children, Donald, age 5 years, and Ruth, 2 yrs, he leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Travis Schenck, two brothers, Stanley Schenck of Chisholm, Minn., and Verne Schenck of Detroit and one sister, Mrs. John McGrath, jr., of Cass City.
Funeral services will be held at the Evangelical church this (Friday) afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. A.H. Butzbach officiating.

The girls were Florence, Mildred, Marie and Pauline---and Catherine who died young. Louis ran a general store in Cedar Bluff, Nebraska. She learned to cook and farm after her marriage.
