Pioneer Lady Answers Summons
Mrs. Christian Striffler Died Tuesday, Oct. 31
Came to Elkland Township in 1877 and Settled on Farm Four Miles for Cass City
Another pioneer was called to rest when Mrs. Christian Striffler answered the final summons at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edward HELWIG, three miles east of Cass City, at five o'clock Tuesay afternoon. Mrs. Striffler had been in poor health for several months, and as her illness developed into a serious nature several weeks ago, the end was not unexpected.
Mary ROMMEL was born in Germany on Dec. 9, 1837. She came to the United States with her parents while she was yet young and they located at Lancaster, N.Y.
Later she went to White Pigeon, Mich. and at that place she was united in marriage with Christian Striffler on July 3, 1856. Shortly after they returned to Lancaster and resided there about seven years when they came to Michigan, locating near Sturgis. In 1877 they came to Cass City where Mr. Stiffler's brother resided and soon after purchased the farm four miles northeast of town on which they lived until Mr. Striffler's death Feb. 6, 1911.
Mrs. Striffler was a loyal and consistant Christian lady and a member of the Evangelical church. She was ever of a kind indulgent disposition and none ever entered her home without a warm welcome nor left without feeling the warmth of genuine hospitality.
Her home was blessed by eight children, two of whom, Christian and Mrs. S.G. Benkelman, preceding the mother in death. The remaining children are: Samuel W. of Argyle; William D., Mrs. Clara (sic) PATTERSON, Mrs. H.L. McDERMOTT, Mrs. Edward HELWIG and Solomon C., all of whom reside in this vicinity. She is also survived by her two brothers, Andrew and George RUMMEL, of Sturgis, one sister, Mrs. Geo. BENKELMAN of St. Francis, Kansas, 18 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. The funeral services will be held at the residence of Edward HELWIG at 12 o'clock today (Friday) and later int he afternoon at the Evangelical Church.
Her tombstone inscription reads:
Striffler, Mary,b. 9 Dec 1937, d. 31 Oct 1911, mother
Her actual Michigan Death Certificate can be viewed online here:
On the US Civil War Draft Registrations Records, 1863-1865, St. Joseph and Van Buren Counties, Michigan, enumerated June 1863, Adam Rommel, age 28, Single, born in Germany, and working as a grocer, was listed as registering for the draft in Sturgis, Michigan.
BonnieMargeret Jacobs, on page 21 of her unpublished 1981 manuscript about the Benkelman Family, said that the name "Rommel" was a pet form of names beginning with RUHM ("fame"), or alternatively blustering or noisy, or messy or untidy.
The Wuerrtemberg, Germany Emigration Index shows that a Johann Michael Rommel, from the district of Ludwigsburg, was born 1 Oct 1804 in Beihingen, applied to emigrate to New York in Oct 1853 (#837989). Unless the date of birh and location of birth are slightly off, this is not our Michael Rommel.
The Michigan Death index shows he was born ca 1804 in Germany, and died on 9 Feb 1888 in St. Joseph, Michigan. He was widowed at the time of his death. The Sattler Family Tree on Ancestry.com shows Michael as a son of Johannes Rommel and Anna Maria Vester.

Bennie Zahn writes that she was a good cook, and her favorite dish was lamb and white beans. She had a pet Banty Rooster. Anna also had a lovely singing voice, and a daughter commented that she and Bertrand used to sing "La Marseillaise" together.
She married Victor MAUMUS, and they owned a Dairy. She sold cream cheese and milk at the Second Street Market, Stall 65. They were the parents of four children.
Bennie Zahn writes that Clothilde married Charles SIEFKER. When she died at age 32, her husband and six children survived her, the youngest, Joseph Raphael Siefker, being but eight months old. Her widower became ill several years later and was hospitalized, leaving his children in care of relatives. A neighbor cared for Raphael, the youngest, and disappeared with him--moving north to Amite, Louisiana. She mistreated him, and Raphael was removed from her care. He was later adopted by the Mayor of Amite and his wife, who were childless. Raphael was renamed Robert Ellis GOODMAN.
The SIEFKER family later discovered his whereabouts and sued for custody, all of which was reported in the Amite newspapers. The judge ruled he should stay with his adoptive parents, and the Siefker family was sadly forced to accept this decision. His ROQUEVERT aunts later travelled to Amite, and were satisfied that he had a proper home and was being well cared for.
He was known as Louis, and he was the only one of his family to emigrate to the United States. Bennie Zahn writes that he returned to France for a visit with his parents in 1878 at which time the birth of his eighth child was imminent. On 10 June 1878 he wrote to his wife, Blazine Pene, citing the great joy he felt embracing his family; both of his parents still living. While the sights of France filled him with admiration and while he rejoiced at being in his homeland and with his family once again, his thoughts were of his wife and children, and the joy he anticipated upon his reunion with them. His handwriting was neat and precise and his throughts were beautifully and sentimentally expressed, all of which tends to indicate that he was a well-schooled person.
He died of stomach cancer when he was 45 year old; the youngest of his 13 children being just three years old. He spent the last months of his life at his summer home in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, where it was hoped that his condition would improve.
On his Find A Grave memorial page, he is shown as being born in Deyme, France, not in Cazeneuve-Montaut. He is also shown as buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Ocean Springs. No photo of a tombstone is posted, however. (# 77856016).
He married Louise SAUNE, and was a Carpenter. They were the parents of six. His Find A Grave memorial page shows the children as twins Marie and Louis, Paul, Germaine and Nola.

The mitochondrial super-haplogroup U encompasses haplogroups U1-U7 and haplogroup K. Haplogroup K is found through Europe, and contains multiple closely related lineages indicating a recent population expansion. The origin of haplogroup K dates to approximately 16,000 years ago, and it has been suggested that individuals with this haplogroup took part in the pre-Neolithic expansion following the Last Glacial Maximum. William Hurst, on his Haplogroup K Website, writes that "Katrine," the founding mother of mitochondrial DNA haplogroup K, was one of the "Seven Daughters of Eve" as listed in the 2001 book of that title by Bryan Sykes. A lot of happened since 2001, but the book is still valuable.
Katrine lived about 16,000 years ago. Perhaps the oldest known K descendant was Oetzi the Iceman whose frozen body was discovered in the Alps in 1991. Estimated at 5000 years old, the Iceman proved to have the basic mutations for a K: 16224C and 16320C. Every K is a cousin of Oetzi.
She married Frank FRANCO of Ocean Springs, Mississippi. He was a railroad conductor and they operated a grocery store, at which they also resided, on Calhoun and Claiborne. It was burned to the ground, and later rebuilt, in 1917. They had two daughters.

The 1900 Census, in Cowanshannock, PA, shows she was married for 19 years, having given birth to 7 children, 6 of whom were still living, and indicates both of her parents were also born in Pennsylvania.
She was the head of household at the time the 1920 census was taken, as her husband had died in February 1919. She was living with two of her daughters, Etta and Elizabeth, plus three grandchildren, born to her daughter Mary Ina, who had died five years previously.
FindAGrave shows her as a daughter of John Rowley (1827-1905) and Mary Ann Bolvin (1825-1889), both buried in East Mahoning Cemetery, Purchase Line, Indiana County, PA.
Her Pennsylvania Death Certificate shows the same parents, and notes she was a widow. Her address at the time of her death was 510 N Seventh St, Apollo, PA. Informant was her son. John R. Hoover, of the same address.Parents are also listed as John Rowley and Mary Ann Bolvin.

At the time of the 1870 Federal Census, John and Mary Rowley were listed with six children in Grant Twp, Indiana Couny, Pennsylvania. He was a farmer, with his real property listed as being worth $13,000, and personal property worth $1,000, similar to his neighbors. Eldests sons Anthony and Cornelius were both working on the farmer, with only Anthony still attending school. Eldest daughter Martha was no longer at school, with occupation listed "at home."
