According to the HISTORY OF CASS CITY (December 1962), THE TRI-COUNTY CHRONICLE was founded by Frederick Klump in 1899 as a competitor to the existing weekly paper, the CASS CITY ENTERPRISE. They co-existed for some seven years. Herbert F. Lenzner, who had been employed by Mr. Klump almost from the founding of the Chronicle became a partner with Mr. Klump in late 1903, and in 1906 not only purchased the remaining interest of Mr. Klump, but also purchased the competitor paper from A. A. P. McDownell, when the two papers were consolidated under the name of the CASS CITY CHRONICLE on April 20, 1906.
