Mrs. Zinnecker's Funeral Held Today

Mrs. John Zinnecker passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.D. Striffler, at Cass City, early Wednesday morning, Feb. 17, after a serious illness of two weeks' duration. Her health has been poor all winter. Funeral services will be conducted at the Striffler residence this (Friday) afternoon by Rev. C.F. Smith.

Elizabeth Wagner was born at Pirmesens, Germany on March 19, 1849. At the age of 19, she was united in marriage with John Zinnecker. Mr. Zinnecker came to the United States in 1868, his wife and baby daughter following him a year later. The family first settled at Ionia and later at Carson City. Mr. and Mrs. Zinnecker came to Cass City in 1880 and started farming operations on a farm three miles east of town. They lost their barn and farm produce in the fire of 1881, but were fortunate in saving their home. After a few years, they moved to Cass City where they resided until Mr. Zinnecker's death on June 18, 1924. Mrs. Zinnecker has made her home with her children since that time. She was a member of the Evangelical church at Cass City.

She leaves seven children, Mrs. W.D. Stiffler, and Mrs. Lester Bailey of Cass City, Geo. Zinnecker of Montana, Wm. Zinnecker of Deford, Mrs. C.W. Clark of Caro, Mrs. Grover Blades of Big Creek, California, and Mrs. John Thiel of Hobart, Indiana. Two children preceded the mother in death.

23619 I29587  Wahl  Catharina  Abt 1839  28 Oct 1890  She was said to be the aunt of Rosina Wahl, the first wife of John Adam Benkelman, the son of Adam and Catherine Benkelman. Date of death based on her tombstone, which was difficult to read and may be in error. BonnieMargaret Jacobs refers to her as Catharina Wahl

Kathy Bonnell shows a Catharina Wahl, born 19 Sept 1837 in B?rtlingen, Donaukreis, W?rttemberg, Germany, who was a daughter of Johannes Wahl and Anna Catharina Weihler. This MAY be the same person. If they are the same women, then she would nto be aunt of Rosina Wahl, but more likely a cousin. Rosina's father did have a sister Evan Catharina, but that sister was some 34 years older than John Schwegler, and unlikely to have been his first wife.

23621 I847  Wahl  Rosina  5 Nov 1857  3 May 1886  Per the MEMOIRS OF JOHN A. BENKELMAN by Hilda Jane Stickley Benkelman, Rosina was a German girl who came over to the United States when she was 13. She was the niece of John Schwegler's wife. She met John Benkelman in New York state, when he was visiting relatives. They married and returned to Michigan, and spent the first winter of their married live with Adam and Catherine Benkelman. John built a house in town for he and Rosina. Adam suggested that he and Catherine move to the house in town and John and Rosina stay on the farm. He offered to sell his farm to John and Rosina for $5,000, less the cost of the house in town. John at first declined, but Rosina spoke up, offering to help John with the farmwork so they could quickly pay off the debt. She worked side by side with her husband, like a man, often in her bare feet to save her shoes. They raised wheat and corn. They shocked up the corn in large loose shocks so they could sit inside and husk it after winter set in. Rosina caught a bad cold one winter, which developed into T.B. She was sick all winter and died in the spring. She and John had been married about 8 years.

In Art Peck's book, he notes that she was probably a member of the Wahl family of Zell, a village near Bortlingen. Catherine, first wife of John Schwegler, was her aunt.

A transcription of her tombstone reads:

23624 I30112  Wakefield  Laurie Sue  3 Jan 1953  5 Feb 2022  Obituary of Laurie Sue Wakefield Reed

Laurie Sue Wakefield Reed grew up in Adrian, a small town in Michigan, the middle child in a family of seven. Avid reading beginning in grade school led to the desire to travel and experience the larger world. At age 19, she and a friend she met at girl scout camp toured Europe together, staying in hostiles, traveling by Eurail, joining in with the hundreds of other young people from around the world doing the same.

A few years later, after graduating from Western Michigan University with a dual degree in English and Philosophy, she moved to South Korea and served as a Peace Corps volunteer. On her way back home, she stopped in Eugene to visit a friend, fell in love with the mountains and ocean, and decided to make this town her home. Laurie thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors, hiking through the forests, swimming in the lakes, even completing a technical climb to the apex of Mt. Washington. She spent many adventurous days with friends at the ocean, completing over 100 scuba dives, including a shark dive in Fiji.
Wanting to have a career that truly helped people, Laurie pursued a Master's degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of Puget Sound. After working for others, she opened a private practice to focus on promoting autonomy of the needs of people with rheumatoid diseases and various types of arthritis. A plaque on her clinic wall described it best: "It's a beautiful thing when a career and a passion come together"

During this time Laurie met and married artist and craftsman, Dave Reed. After twenty-four years of marriage, they decided to pursue separate dreams.

At the age of sixty-five, Laurie retired, flying to Africa the next day. She was there a month, visiting five countries. Seeing the native animals in their natural setting had been a dream since childhood.

Upon her return home, she was diagnosed with end stage ovarian cancer and told, regrettably, that she had only three to six months left of life. Focus was on "getting papers in order". On a flight to Michigan to participate in spreading her deceased brother's ashes, she was seated next to a man flying to South Carolina to visit his son. A week later, on the flight home, the same man, John Sugar, was again seated next to her. They enjoyed their conversations and decided to have dinner together to celebrate this coincidence. They ended up falling in love.

To their surprise and delight, Laurie lived another four years, feeling quite well. During this time she traveled, skied in the mountains and swam in the ocean. She wrote a book, laughed and played with her growing family and friends, thoroughly enjoying the new love she stumbled into along the way.

Laurie passed away peacefully, in her sleep, on Saturday, February 5, 2022. She was preceded in death by both parents, a sister, and two brothers. She is survived by one brother, eight nieces and nephews and thirteen great nieces and nephews.

Claiborne is the son of Hezekiah Waldrop born circa 1772 and Martha Davenport. Hezekiah Waldrop was the child of John Waldrop b. circa 1732 in Hanover Co., VA and Tabitha Parrish. John Philip Walker was the fourth son born to Philip and Sarah E. Walker. He was born in Lauderdale County, Tennessee but records also indicate his birth in neighboring Haywood County.

When he was a small child the family, now with seven children, left Tennessee and settled in Guadalupe County near the San Marcos River at Prairie Lea. John P. was only twelve years old when Civil War broke out. He was too young to serve, but his three older brothers, Patrick Henry, William Byron, and James Knox, all left Texas to serve.

In 1873 he married Addie Fenner and they moved to Luling, living on S. 1st Street (now Mesquite Ave.) John P joined his brother, James K., in the mercantile business 'J.K. Walker and Brother' in Luling. They had two sons before Addie's death at an early age, in 1874.

After Addie's death, John P. and the boys lived with the Fenner family in Luling: his mother-in-law Alzedda and three of her adult children, Sarah E., Christopher and Josephine C.

In Feb 1881 John married Josephine C. Fenner. They made their home in Luling and had four children.

By 1883, a new store at the corner of Davis and Pecan became an important mercantile center for Luling and surrounding area. The store underwent changes in the following years, but ownership interest remained primarily with the Walker brothers and eventually younger nephews. Walker Bros. store still remains on Davis Street.

23689 I448  Wallace  Mary Josephine  23 Feb 1851  24 Oct 1930  A Mary Wallice (sic) was enrolled in the District 6 School in Sabine County in 1854.

At the time of the 1910 census, Josephine was shown as being the mother of 11 children, 10 still living. It therefore appears she was not the mother of three children living with she and Elias at the time of the 1780 census, John (b. 1865) and Sydney Ann (b. 1867) and Felix J. (b. 1868).

At the time of the 1920 Federal census she was living with her youngest daugher and son-in-law, Minnie and Elmer Butler, in San Augustine County.

Her headstone reads: "Come ye blessed - She lived and died a Christian - Beloved - How we miss you."

Obituary follows. Copied from FamilySearch, Public Memory:

In memory of Mrs. Elias Clark, who went away, leaving us for a better world on October 24th 1930. She was born Feb. 23rd 1851. She was married to Elias Clark in 1870. To this union was born eleven children. They are: C.B. Clark, L.T. Clark, J.E. Clark, T.F. Clark, W.E. Clark, Mrs. Agnes Cole, Mrs. Minnie Butler, all of whom are still living. Bruce Clark, Mrs. Anna McLemore, Mrs. Mattie Chandler and Mrs. Ara Anderson, who preceded her in death. There were also three step-children: John Clark, who died in early life, Mrs. J.W. Craig, who is also dead, and Felix Clark, who still survives. She left eighty grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren.
She professed faith in Christ in early life and joined the missionary Baptist Church. She was a charter member the the Antioch Church, and was a faithful and devout Christian.
Dear Mother was kind and true, meeting everyone with a smile. She always bore her trials with patience. It was so hard to give her up, but God's will must be done, not ours. We know it was a joyful hour for her when she heard the Dear Savior saying: "Enter Thou into the joy of the Lord. You have been faithful over a few things and I will make thee ruler over many things."
What more can be said? We know that a life like this can mean only a self sacrifice and loving service with heart and hands. Such a life she performed, not one day but every day, striving to help everyone she could.
Funeral service was held by Eld. E.M. Gentry at Antioch Church and her body was laid to rest in Antioch Cemetery to await the resurrection.

Note - This obituary was written in October of 1930 in memory of Mary Josephine Wallace Clark. Antioch Church is the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Sabine County, Texas. The cemetery is Gravel Hill Cemetery adjacent to the church property. A copy of the following poem was written below the obituary.

To that beautiful land we call heaven,
The place where we all want to be
Is a road that leads onward and upward,
And a lone weary traveler we see.
An angel is hastening to open
The pearly gates far and wide,
Bidding this pilgrim welcome,
To the joy on the other side.
Who is the traveler fair angel?
Someone's sister or brother?
Oh, no far greater than these,
'Tis someone's precious mother.
She is a mother old and gray,
And bent with the passing years,
As she toils through sunshine and shadows
And up through the vale of tears.
It has been her lot to be happy.
And then came her saddest hours.
Many a bitter weed she has plucked,
That grew in her lovely flowers.
Oh, dear tired, weary mother,
If we friends and loved ones knew
How thy loving hands have guided us,
And steered us safely through.

23690 I447  Wallace  Sophie H.  Abt 1849  Yes, date unknown  Sophia was listed as a one year old at the time of the 1850 Lawrence County, Mississippi census.

However, she was not listed on Schluter's 1860 transcription of the Sabine County, Texas census. Nor was she listed on Toole's 1870 transcription. She was listed as part of the household in Toole & Speight's 1880 transcription however. Why was she missing from the earlier transcriptions? Perhaps the Joseph, age 12, who was listed only in 1860 actually should have been shown as Sophie. And in 1870, perhaps she was shown as Josephin

23691 I444  Wallace  Thompson "Finn"  Abt 1818  Between 1851 and 1854  (Research):In looking for the first husband of Mary Etta VARDEMAN, I was found the following family that was a near perfect match. The names, ages and birthplaces for Maretta, Elizabeth and Sophia match their later census listings in Sabine County, Texas. I looked at every WALLACE and WALLIS family that was indexed in Mississippi in 1850 by Ancestry.com. They were in Lawrence County, Mississippi, which is located in the southwestern portion of the state, nearby to Pike and Amite counties.

1850 Federal Census Mississippi, Lawrence County:

29-29
Wallis, Thomson 32 M W Farmer $50 Miss
Wallis, Maretta 29 F W Miss
Wallis, Elizabeth 3 F W Miss
Wallis, Sophia 1 F W Miss

I am assuming this is the correct family for the time being. More information should be gathered to either prove or disprove this assumption.

Other Wallis's in Lawrence County in 1850 include:
30-30
Wallis, James A 27 M W Farmer Miss
Wallis, Nancy W 18 F W Miss
Wallis, Sarah M 1 F W Miss
