He was a merchant, farmer and owned a sawmill. His interest in the growth of Sabine County was such that he personally hired a geologist to come from Pennsylvania to test for oil, gas and other minerals. He hired politicians to attend and speak at his annual July 4th picnics, which were held at his old home in Isla. These picnics were open to the public and were always well attended. His aim in thi was to improve the knowledge and friendship between the politicians and the people they represented. Charles lost heavily in the depression, and also in the Texas Land Bank, so much in fact, that on Feb. 9, 1930, he suffered a stroke, from which he died two days later. He was buried at the old Vickers Cemetery. His beloved Wife, Kate...was buried beside her husband. their children were also buried in the same cemetery except when stated otherwise. (White and Toole, p 38). The only possession we (the family) have of Harrision Vickers, Jr. and his son, Charles Harris Vickers, is a piece of gold. This money was given to Charles by his father when he was seven years old, in exchange for a 'prize pig' of which Charles was overly fond, and more than a little reluctant to part with. He was so grieved over the exchange that he never spent the money, and when my mother, Hazel, was seven years of age, he gave her this little gold piece" writes Mrs. R.G. Harrision Vickers Jr., referred to as Harris Vickers on his headright papers, rec'd his land from the Sabine County Land Board in 1838, at Milam, Texas. He was a member of the Sexton Masonic Lodge at Sexton, and after it was moved to Milam. He was a farmer and the family home was near the Old Vickers Cemetery in the Isla Community. Jimmy was born July 19, 1943 in Center, Texas to Ross Evans Vickers and Paunee Lord Vickers. He was a graduate of Hemphill High School and later earned his Masters Degree at Stephen F. Austin State University. He also served his country as a member of the Army National Guard. He was a lifelong resident of Sabine County. Jimmy was an educator for the Joaquin Independent School District for many years and was a member of many organizations including the Frank Sexton Masonic Lodge in Milam; the Sons of the Republic of Texas; and held a Doctorate of Domino Science. He was a longtime member of New Hope Baptist Church. He is survived by his sons, Mike Vickers of Shelbyville, Texas, Vance Vickers and wife, Johanna, of Sexton, Texas, Rodolfo Martinez of Slidell, Louisiana, and Edgar Martinez of Martinsville, Texas; daughter, Debbie Terry and husband, Cooper, of Longview, Texas; brother, Vance Vickers and wife, Juanice, of The Woodlands, Texas; sisters, Betsy Cox and husband, George, of Milam, Texas and Susie Clark and husband, Jimmy, also of Milam; and eleven grandchildren, Collin, Connor, Carsen, Logan, Caleb, Laney, Cooper, Carter, Lawson, Tristan, and Tatom. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Vickers, and his daughter-in-law, Crystal Vickers. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, March 31, 2019 at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 1, 2019 at Starr Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Ronnie Wheeler officiating and Ross Vickers delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow services in Vickers Cemetery located in Milam, Texas. Serving as pallbearers are Ronald Barlow, Mike Vickers, Vance Vickers, Victor Sheppard, Collin Vickers, Connor Terry, Logan Vickers, and Caleb Terry. Susie was born in Hemphill, Texas on August 14, 1951 to Ross Evans Vickers and Blanche Paunee Lord Vickers. She was a lifetime resident of Sabine County and a member of The Refuge Church. She had worked Deep East Texas Electric Coop for 42 years. She graduated from Hemphill High School where she served as drum major and flutist for the Hornet Band. She continued her love of music by singing and playing her flute in church. After high school, she attended Kilgore College and was a member of the Kilgore band. She loved watching Hemphill Hornet Football on Friday nights, and if she wasn't in the stands watching, you better believe she was listening on the radio. She was a talented artist who enjoyed drawing and painting and she also loved to sew and do cross stitch. Susie is survived by her husband of 45 years, Jimmy Clark of Milam; son, Matt Clark and wife, Katherine, of New Braunfels; daughter, Stacy Horne and husband, Jacob, of San Augustine; brother, Vance Vickers and wife, Juanice, of Montgomery; sister, Betsy Cox and husband, George, of Milam; and grandchildren, William Horne, Dakota Horne and Harper Horne. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ross and Paunee Vickers; her brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Martha Vickers; and niece, Crystal Vickers. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2022 at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 7, 2022 in The Refuge Church of Milam, 200 Texas 87 S, Milam, TX 75959 under the direction of Starr Funeral Home with Bro. Leroy was born January 7, 1926 in Elkhorn, Nebraska to Julius and Meta (Labs) Villwok. He grew up in Waterloo, Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Army from November 30, 1953 to March 2, 1955 and was stationed in Japan. Leroy married Donna Rae Hirt on January 19, 1952 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkhorn, NE. He bought the family farm near Waterloo, NE in 1958 and moved to Craig, NE in 1970, where he farmed for 38 years. He sold that farm in 1997 and moved to Oakland. He spent 15 winters in Apache Junction, Arizona. He was a member and president of the Missouri River Volunteer C.B. Club, past member of the American Legion in Craig, section leader of Rain Dance Mobile Home Park in Arizona. He is survived by his wife, Donna Rae of Fremont; son, Mark and wife, Sara Villwok of Coolidge, Arizona; daughters, Marcee and husband, Richard Tomasek of Craig and Rhonda and husband, Gale Miller of Soldier, Iowa; grandchildren, Aaron, Arick, John, Todd, Andrea, Nick, Grace, Jacob, Ryan, and Jared; great grandchildren, Tristen, Katlynn, Amber, Marissa, Katelyn, Kyle, Gavin, and Harper. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral service will be 10:30 A.M., Monday, September 28, 2015 at First Lutheran Church in Fremont. The Rev. Marty Tollefson will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday from 1 PM to 4 PM at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Military honors will be conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W. Post #854 and American Legion Post #20. Burial will be at the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Elkhorn, NE at a later date. "Sis," founder of The Boarding House Catering and former co-owner of H White Construction County, was well-known for coordinating fundraisers for local parochial schools and other charity work throughout the community. She was a founding member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Church and was later a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Lake Charles. She w as also a member of Catholic Daughters of America, the Ladies Altar Society, National Association of Women in Construction, Louisiana Restaurant Association, National Federation of Independent Businesses, and Women Business Owners Association, and was inducted into the Companions of Honor by the Diocese of Lake Charles. Mrs. White was a 1942 graduate of St. Charles Academy and graduated from Vincent's Business College before marrying John Homer White, with whom she had eight children and one foster daughter. Survivors include her brother, Martin Van Vincent; her children, James M. "Jimmy" White, Patricia Jo "Trish" White, Rose Katherine "Rosie" Tower and husband Wendell "Dub" Tower, Veronica "Pookie" White, Molly Jackson and husband Joe Jackson, Nanette White, and Cora Lynn Caldwell; son-in- law Nicola "Nick" Vartuli; daughter-in-law Vivia Cormier White; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and numerous friends whom she loved unconditionally. "Sis" was preceded in death by her parents, Rose Felicia Vincent and Amos Joseph Vincent; a brother, Monsignor Amos J. "A.J." Vincent; her beloved husband, J. Homer White; one daughter, Marie Lorene "Butch" Vartuli; one son, John H. "Johnny" White Jr.; a son in-law, Randy Caldwell; and two great-grandchildren, Alex and Emma. 'Sis" White was well known for her kindness and generosity toward those in need of food, shelter and love over the years. She will long be remembered for her good deeds and hospitality. A funeral Mass will be at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 3. The Rev. Wayne LeBleu, Monsignor James Gaddy, Monsignor Harry Greig, Monsignor Jace Eskind, Monsignor Charles Dubo is and the Rev. Aubrey Guilbeau will co-celebrate. Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery. Visitation will be in Johnson Funeral Home in Lake Charles on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. followed by a Scripture service. Visitation will continue on Monday from 8- 10:45 a.m. in the funeral home. Remembrances may be made by donations to the Autism Society of Southwest Louisiana, P.O. Bragg of Milam" An article about her 101rst birthday celebration, in The Sabine County Reporter, 23 November 2022, page 2, notes she was born and raised on a farm near Many, Louisiana. After marrying her husband George Yudell Bragg in 1939, she moved to Sabine County, Texas, where she has lived all of her adult life. Even at 101, she was said to be still active in going to church and canning jellies of all kinds. Her other favorite pass time is quilting. The paper tried to get a count of how large her family was, but after a couple of attempts she just said "there's a bunch of us and it keeps growing." Evelyn attributed her long life to "(living) ...a good life, no cussing, drinking or smoking." |

J. Vines of Livingston, and E. C. Vines of Lufkin, 11 granchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. B. C. Duke and Bro. Charles Stephens officiating. She had spent her entire life in this vicinity. On September 22, 1896 she was married to Frank Racek in Fremont. Six children were born to this union. She was a 62 year member of the ZCBJ Lodge in Morse Bluff. She was a kind and loving mother and leaves a host of friends and will be missed by all. Survivors are son, Lewis of North Bend; four daughters, Mrs. Tillie Chesley, Mrs. Emma Jensen, Mrs. Clara Best of North Bend; and Mrs. Julia Divis of Schuyler; brother Joe Virka of Morse Bluff; 13 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1931, and a son Frank in 1949. Funeral services were at the Moser Funeral Home Chapel Friday afternoon with the Rev. Robert E. Favre officiating. Music was by Mr. and Mrs. James Arneal. Pallbearers were Marvin Chesley, Merle Jensen, Melvin Divis, Gayle Chesley, Eugene Zeleny and Arnold Divis. Interment was in Killian Cemetery near Morse Bluff. She was one of 6 children in the family. Arlene grew up on a farm northeast of Milligan. She attended Country School District #100 and stayed at her Grandmother Eret's home in Crete to attend High School where she graduated with the Class of 1942. After graduation, she worked at the Bruning and Fairmont Airbases during World War II from 1942 to 1946. After her children were in school, she worked at Milligan Public School as a cook, at the Formfit Plant at Crete, and then worked at the Youth Development Center in Geneva, NE from 1981 to 1991. On May 21,1946, Arlene was married to Leonard Kassik of Milligan, NE on her family's farm and to them 3 children were born: Michael Leonard, Dean Albert, and Patricia Marie. Her family farm was a place where she held an abundance of memories like the one Christmas Leonard rode on horseback due to large amounts of snow to deliver her Christmas gift which was a brown fur coat. She first met Leonard when Arlene's brother Loren, along with Leonard, came to get her and Dot for the weekend at Crete while they were staying at her Grandmother Eret's. Arlene was a member of the Milligan United Methodist Church and UMW spanning over 50 plus years. Since 1945 she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #240 where she held offices at the local and county level. Arlene was also a member of the WFLA and Senior Citizens Club in Milligan. Her talents of Czech cooking, sewing, crocheting, knitting and embroidery were weaved throughout her whole life. Family and friends, time and time again, enjoyed her kolaches and dumplings. Her children donned her talents of homemade costumes and clothes. Her handwork of blankets and towels is a gift that will never be forgotten. As a witness of all of these things, Arlene's passion in life was her husband, her family, dancing and music, which lead her to support Leonard with The Milligan Czech Brass Band. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Ella Vnoucek; husband Leonard Kassik; grandson Dean M. She earned a teaching certificate from Doane and taught country school for 4 years. On November 9, 1950, she married Raymond Earl Soukup of Ohiowa. Together they had 2 beautiful daughters, Nancy and Barbara. After the girls were grown, Betty cleaned houses and later worked at the East Union cafeteria for 14 years retiring in 1991. After retirement she enjoyed bowling, traveling, singing and entertaining her many friends. For the past 3 years she called Yankee Hill Village home. She loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all. She was the second of six children in the family. Dorothy was born on the family farm 8 miles south of Friend, Nebraska. She attended country school District 100 and then, along with her sister Arlene, lived with their Grandmother Eret in Crete, Nebraska to attend high school where she graduated with the class of 1940. After graduation, Dorothy attended business college in Kansas City until World War II broke out. She then began working at both the Fairmont and Bruning Airbases in support of the war effort. On October 23, 1945, Dorothy was married to Leslie Skrivanek at her family home near Friend, Nebraska. They made their home on the Skrivanek farm near Milligan, Nebraska. Together, they had three children: Loren Gene, Alan Leslie, and Debra Ann. Dorothy enjoyed working alongside Les on the farm and raising their children. She was an expert seamstress and enjoyed cooking many Czech delights. After the children were grown, she worked at the Youth Development Center in Geneva, Nebraska. In retirement, Dorothy enjoyed making memories with her family, traveling, working outdoors and baking her delicious kolaches. Her fun-loving nature and kindness will be remembered by many. Dorothy was very active in her community. She was a Gold Star Sister member of the American Legion Auxiliary HSSK Post #240, charter member of the Crete DAV Auxiliary and member of Saline Center WFLA Lodge #389. She was also a member of the Milligan United Methodist Church and was a sponsor for the Methodist Youth Choir and Youth Fellowship. She was the oldest of 6 children. Darlene lived in Iowa the first 4 years of her life. The family moved to Nebraska first living in Exeter then Fairmont where she entered the 5th grade. In 1960 she graduated from Fairmont Public School. Her first job was working at the Tower Caf? during high school. She then became a Certified Nurse's Aide at the Fairmont Nursing Home and worked at the Heritage of Geneva for 1 ? years. On March 5, 1973 the Fairview Manor in Fairmont opened with Darlene taking on the role of Certified Nurse Aide, Med Aide and worked her way up to Supervisor in the Laundry Dept. for the next 20 years. Darlene became very close to the residents of the Manor over the years considering them and her coworkers a second family. Darlene met Rex Johnson and through the years was blessed with 5 beautiful daughters. Rex passed away on January 1, 1970. On December 17, 1976 she married Willard (Bill) Daws at St. Helena's Catholic Church in Grafton, NE. Cooking, reading, walking, watching her favorite shows, playing cards, especially Skip-Bo with her husband and family, collecting recipe books, and spending time with her family were all things she enjoyed. She is survived by daughters and son-in-laws, Desiree (Chris) Bennett of Weatherford, TX, Renee (Chris) Sluka of Roseland, NE, LaRae (Don) Garrigan of Pacifica, CA, Charlene (Joseph) Magrini of Crystal Lake, IL, and Michelle (Brian) Drahota of Lincoln, NE. Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to the Milligan Rescue Unit. Norma Jean (Vojta) Nadherny age 84 of Milligan, NE passed away in Lincoln, Ne on January 20, 2017 surrounded by loved ones. Norma was born Feb. 13, 1932 in Friend, NE to James and Georgia (Elznic) Vojta. Norma graduated from Friend High School. She was employed by Russell Stover Candies of Lincoln, NE prior to her marriage. Norma married Arnold J Nadherny on Oct. 9, 1954 in Friend, NE. To this union, three children were born ? Carol Jean, Marvin Arnold and Nancy Ann. She was a dedicated farmer's wife, and enjoyed raising chickens & ducks. She had a bountiful vegetable and flower gardens. The family always looked forward to homemade noodles, bread and kolaches. A story about her making black bottom cupcakes will be a family memory forever. She took pride in delivering delicious meals to the field during planting and harvest. Arnold & Norma enjoyed their winter trips to Las Vegas and a couple trips to Hawaii. Spending time with grandchildren was special to her. Norma was a member of the Milligan Woman's Club, and Milligan Legion Auxiliary. Norma was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-law, son Marvin and sister-in-law Emily Nadherny. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Arnold; daughters Carol (Eldon) Ogorzolka and Nancy (Larry) Barrow both of Lincoln, NE; grandsons Dan and Michael Nadherny of Milligan, NE; Brian Nadherny of Rushville, NE; granddaughters Jenny Ogorzolka of Cleveland, OH; Kristi (Brian) Ekasala of Lake Worth, FL; Brooke Barrow of Manhattan, KS; great-grandchildren Avery and Hunter Ekasala. Clinton Melvin Volkmer, passed into eternity on Sunday February 19, 2012 at the Haven Home in Kenesaw NE at the age of 80 years. Clinton was born on April 4, 1931 on a farm near Shickley Nebraska to Adolph and Leona (Schmock) Volkmer. He was a 1948 graduate of Geneva High School. In 1952, Clint was drafted into the US Army where he served his country stationed in Alaska during the Korean War. After his discharge from the Army in 1954 he returned to Nebraska. On August 22, 1955 he married Ruby Jirkovsky and to this union came five children. Clint farmed southeast of McCool Jct. for most of his life until 1984 at which time he retired from farming and went to work for the York County Rural Public Power. In May 1990 his wife of 34 years Ruby died of cancer. Clint continued to live on the farm and working in York until he fully retired in 1994. In 1995 he married Dee Rosenberry and moved to Columbus NE. Clint enjoyed farming and the friendships that came along with living in that area for most of his life. He was proud of his time served in the Army. He enjoyed family gatherings, listening and watching Husker football on Saturdays and listening to his favorite polkas on Sunday. During his retirement he enjoyed visits with family, bowling, fishing, playing cards, and tending to the yard and landscaping. He will be greatly missed by all! Clint is survived by his wife Dee of Columbus NE and his five children and their spouses: Terry Volkmer and wife Vicky of Bellevue WA, Janet Radcliff and husband Rex of Beaver Crossing NE, Kelly Smith and husband Doug of York NE, Doug Volkmer and wife Sue of Lincoln NE, and Laurie Hillmer of York NE. Clinton is survived by 12 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren as well as his sister Pat Bredenkamp of York NE. Also survived by sister-in-laws, Vivian Volkmer of Geneva NE, Phyllis Volkmer of Beatrice NE, and brother-in-law Kenneth Arp of Lexington NE. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruby, brothers Dallas, Gilbert and Duane and by his sister Ramona. |

She moved to Lincoln, where she worked at the Miller and Paine's Department Store. During World War II, she worked at the Cushman Motor Works, working on the bomb fuse assembly line, later transferring to the office. She left their employment after her marriage to Wally Johnson of Friend in 1948. She and Wally worked at the Vogue Theater which he owned and the Friend Sale Barn, which they purchased in 1954. In 1957, they began to collect antique autos, and later opened an antique shop. They traveled extensively throughout the United States and foreign countries. (Milligan, p 322). In Loving Memory Of V. Vivian Johnson V. Vivian Johnson was born in Fillmore County on a farm near Exeter, Nebraska on February 15, 1919 to William and Rose (Hromadka) Votipka, the third of five children and died Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at the Exeter Care Center in Exeter at the age of 90 years 11 months and 11 days. As a young girl Vivian attended Exeter High School and graduated with the class of 1936. She furthered her education by attending Wayne State Teachers College and earned her teaching certificate. For a time she taught rural schools in Saline and York Counties. On February 14, 1948, Vivian was united in marriage to Carl W. "Wally" Johnson in San Francisco, California. Returning to Friend, Vivian and Wally operated the Vogue Theater in Friend from 1948 until 1957 and in 1960 they started Johnson's Antique Shop. Over the years they became quite the "experts" in collecting and acquiring various antiques, especially antique automobiles. Vivian had great fun wearing antique clothing to go with the car when they would ride in parades or car tours. She also often put on "style shows" to show off the antique clothing. Together they enjoyed extensive traveling as well. Vivian was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining her family, cookies were always available when you stopped in to visit. Vivian is remembered by her nieces and nephews as being the authority. If Aunt Vivian said to do it, it was done. Vivian was a member of the United Church of Christ the American Legion Auxiliary in Friend and a former member of the Congregational Church in Exeter. Vivian spent many hours working with the card recycling at the Friend Manor. She is survived by her brother, Bill Victor, Northridge, CA, sister, Wilma Murphy, Exeter, sister-in-law, Doris Conti, Mountain View, CA, several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wally in 1985 and sisters, Lucille Wright and Helen Hayes. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the United Church of Christ in Friend with the Revs. Tim and Ginny Adams officiating. Interment will be in the Andrew Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 11 am - 8 pm at Lauber-Moore Funeral Home, Friend. Memorials have been established to the church. She graduated from Exeter High School in 1933, and taught in country schools south of Exeter. On June 17, 1940, she married Leo W. (Swede) Murphy, her high school sweetheart. They enjoyed 49 years together, raising six children on the family farm. While their children attended St. Stephen's Catholic School, Wilma was active in the Home and School Association. In the early 1960's she worked at the Exeter Rexall Drug store. When Memory Manor opened in 1965, she was on the first staff of caregivers, then worked as secretary for her sons at Murphy Plumbing and Heating until 1984. After Swede died in 1989, Wilma continued to live in the house they built when they were married, until she moved to the Exeter Care Center at age 90. Throughout her life, she was an inspiration with her strong faith, graceful demeanor, and love of family. Kolaches, canasta, cooking and crafts are among the many things Wilma shared with family. With dozens of grandchildren and great grandchildren, she always had plenty of visitors, as well as activities to attend. She enjoyed her many friends, including those in bridge and pinochle groups, fitness classes, St. Stephen's Altar Society and Exeter Woman's Club. Wilma enjoyed travel, reading, and working crossword puzzles. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sisters, and a son-in-law. She is survived by her brother, Bill Victor of Northridge, California; three daughters and sons-in-law, three sons and daughters-in-law; 17 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren. Her children and their spouses are: Kathleen and Bob Harre of rural Exeter, Bill and Carol Murphy of Crete, Tim and Sherrill Murphy of Omaha, Kriss and Gib Fendrick of Omaha, Barry and Sylvia Murphy of Exeter, and Rose and Dan Vodvarka of Lincoln. He returned to North Bend and operated the Dairy Dream from 1965 to 1972. In 1976, he returned to Fremont and owned and operated Len's Liquor Store until 1982. He married Helen Vavak on Dec. 29, 1951, at St. John's Catholic Church in Prague. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fremont, American Legion Post 20 of Fremont, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8223 of North Bend and was a former member of the North Bend Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include: his wife; a son, Leonard Vyhlidal Jr. of Fremont; two daughters, Carol (Mrs. Doug) Dale of Fremont and JoAnn (Mrs. Francis) Zakovec of Morse Bluff; a sister, Leona Loehr of Fremont; five grandchildren, Jeff and Jason Dale, Mike Albert, Ryan and Brent Zakovec; and four great-grandchildren, Allison, Abbey and Ethan Dale and Haley Zakovec. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, July 5, 2020, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home.
