23143 I15386  Travis  Charles Edward  8 Aug 1829  Abt 1860  Charles Edward Travis, Texas Ranger, United States Army officer, and son of Rosanna (Cato) and William Barret Travis, was born in Alabama in 1829. After his father's death at the Alamo young Charles lived in New Orleans with his mother and stepfather, Dr. Samuel B. Cloud, but upon their deaths in 1848 moved to Brenham to live with his sister, Mrs. John (Susan Isabella) Grissett.

After becoming a member of the Texas bar he was elected to the legislature to represent Caldwell and Hays counties in 1853? 54. He served briefly as captain of Company E of the Texas Rangers, which was stationed at Fort Clark, and was commissioned captain in the Second United States Cavalry on March 5, 1855, and appointed to the command of Company H, which he recruited at Evansville, Indiana. On August 6, 1855, he reported with his new command at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, where Second Lt. Robert C. Wood, Jr., preferred charges of slander against him. On the march to Texas charges of cheating at cards and unauthorized absence from camp were brought against him.

Eliza G. Johnston remarked in her diary that Travis was "a mean fellow...no one respects or believes a word [he] says," and on December 10, 1855, Col. Albert Sidney Johnston relieved him of command and placed him "under arrest in quarters." To a formal charge of "conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman," Travis pleaded not guilty. He retained H. M. Lewis as his counsel; as an attorney himself, however, Travis mainly handled his own defense. Capt. Eugene E. McLean of the Quartermaster Department was appointed judge advocate, and Lt. Col. Henry Bainbridge of the First Infantry served as president. The court-martial, which convened on March 15, 1856, at Fort Mason, proved one of the most sensational in Texas history with Colonel Johnston and many of Travis's fellow officers testifying against him. After almost a month of testimony and deliberation, Travis was found guilty of all three charges on April 11 and was dismissed from service on May 1, 1856.

Claiming that the graduates of the United States Military Academy at West Point had discriminated against him as an appointee to the regiment from civilian life, Travis enlisted the assistance of the Texas legislature to help clear his name. A joint committee examined the testimony and recommended that he be publicly vindicated. On August 30, 1856, the legislature issued a joint resolution stating that "the sentence was not sustained by the testimony," and requesting that President Franklin Pierce reexamine the proceeding and reverse the findings of the court martial. When Pierce refused to reopen the case, Travis took the unwise step of attempting to force several of the officers who had testified against him to recant. This tactic led to a backlash of public sentiment against Travis, who thereupon returned to his sister's home in Washington County, where he died of consumption in 1860. William B. Travis's "little boy" was buried in the Masonic Cemetery at Chappell Hill.

23144 I16353  Travis  Charles Kirk  18 Nov 1949  1 Mar 2019  Obituary

?b?Charles Kirk Travis
?/b?( November 18, 1949 - March 01, 2019 )
Charles "Kirk" Travis, 69, passed from this life on Friday, March 1, 2019 at his home in Largo, Fl with his wife of 23 years, Wendy Daigle Travis, and his son, Joshua Daigle, of Fredericksburg, Virginia at his side. He was born in Port Arthur, Texas to Mildred and Jessie Travis and grew up in east Texas where he enjoyed baseball, fishing, and family.
Kirk served his country with the United States Air Force and was a retired/disabled veteran. He loved cooking and fishing but his greatest love was music. He had a great love for the Lord throughout his life and was blessed with an extraordinary talent for music and an amazing voice that he used to glorify the Savior and touch many lives. He began singing as a young boy with his identical twin brother, Kent, and after retiring from the Air Force he spent many years playing and singing southern gospel music, despite suffering from heart and kidney disease. Among the groups he played with throughout the years were The Sounds of Victory of East Texas, the Jubillaires of Winter Haven, Fl, and the Troubadors of Largo, Fl.
?u? ?/u?He is survived by his wife, Wendy Travis, and son, Joshua Daigle, of Virginia; son, James Travis; daughter, Charlie Howard; older brother, Phillip Travis; twin brother Kent Travis, all of Texas; four grandchildren, Chrissy White, Savannah Daigle, Makenna Daigle, and Jaxon Daigle; two great grandsons, along with nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one grandson, J.T. White of Texas.
Kirk was a gentle soul who touched many with his music. He will be greatly missed but is surely now at home with the Lord and singing in that heavenly choir.
It was Kirk's wish to be cremated. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 23 at 1:00 p.m. at Teakwood Village Park, 800 North Missouri Ave. Largo, FL in the Aloha building. Interment will be held at 1:00 p.m. on March 25, 2019 at Bay Pines National Cemetery, 10000 Bay Pines Blvd., St. Petersburg, FL. To honor Kirk's memory, donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, Shriner's Hospital, or the charity of your choice.
A memorial service will also be held at Starr Funeral Home Chapel in Hemphill, Texas Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 2:00 p.m.

23162 I536  Travis  James Cannon  Abt 1826  20 Apr 1897  He was known by his middle name, Cannon. He may have been married previously to an Elizabeth, also from Mississippi.

According to the MINUTES 1858-1890 FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH HEMPHILL, TEXAS, (James) Cannon and Sophronia (White) Travis were among the 11 founding members of the church. Sophronia was admitted by voucher on September 7, 1857 from W. C. Southwell, Missionary East Texas, as was her husband, Cannon Travis. Fellowship was withdrawn from Cannon Travis on November 10, 1860, and restored September 24, 1864. In June 1884, "charges having been preferred against Bro. Cannon Travis for unchristian conduct & said charges as alleged being Sustained, it was ordered that the Church withdraw fellowship from him & it is further ordered that his name be erased from the Church Book."

Note: Children's names and birthdates are based on a transcription of the 1870 census. The actual 1870 and 1880 census microfilm's should be carefully checked. The 1880 extract seems to have several glaring discrencies in names and dates. Blanche Toole speculates that perhaps the census taker knew Cannon and his family, and completed the information from (faulty) memory instead of by actually interviewing the family. Also, Charlie White lists a child named Jann White, born ca 1868 per the 1870 census who is not listed on either transcription of the census. Perhaps this is Martha Jane White.

Was shown on the muster roll of Captain J.M. Burroughs Company of the Sabine County Volunteer Infantry, CSA, and was enlisted at Hemphill, Texas by Drury Field for 3 months duty on January 15, 1863.

Jules Hurst writes that "I understand that Cannon died in Texas of cancer of the eye."
