He was sheriff, and at one time held just about every other office in Victoria Co, TX. He was considered the model sheriff of Texas. Per the Handbook of Texas, Columbus "Old Zip" Thurmond was a native of Tennessee and came to Texas at an early age and settled in Victoria County. He was a merchant in the firm of J.O. Wheeler and became treasurer of Victoria County in 1846. He married in 1858 to Maggie McGrew; they were parents of four children. He operated stores at Goliad and Brownsville between 1863 and 1865, when he became a land agent. He was sheriff of Victoria in 1884. His papers, covering 1831 to 1897, are in the Archives at the University of Texas. His birthdate was auspicious. On November 13, 1833, between midnight and dawn, thousands of meteors showered the sky over North America. To the native peoples of the land, it appeared that the stars were falling out of the heavens. Some thought it was the judgment day. Others called it "The Night the Stars Fell". A young girl who was a slave at the time of the event said "Somebody in the quarters started yellin' in the middle of the night to come out and to look up at the sky. We went outside and there they was a fallin' everywhere! Big stars coming down real close to the groun' and just before they hit the ground they would burn up! We was all scared. Some O'the folks was screamin' and some was prayin' we all made so much noise, the white folk came out to see what was happenin'. They looked up and then they got scared too." The celestial phenomenon called "the most impressive and awesome display ever recorded" was, in fact, the Leonids meteor shower seen in one of its most impressive years. Viewers witnessed 50,000to 150,000 meteors per hour, only equaled by the November 17, 1966 display, when the Leonid shower brought 150,000 meteors per hour. Debris from the comet Temple-Tuttle that orbits the sun every 33 years causes the shower." |

I also found Sarah Tillson's grave site. The grave sites are #444, #445 & #453. I also have found a tax record for George Bramhall in Dover, MA "1650" much earlier than the 1680 time frame reported in the "Bramhalls in America" book. I have also found lineage from the Mayflower through Sarah Tillson's mother who is buried next to Sarah. On her grave stone, it indicated that she was the only daughter of Col. Tom Doty. Tom Doty is a direct decendant of Edward Doty of the Mayflower." FindAGrave has an iamge of the tombstone, but it is very difficult to read. They note it is inscribed "In her 25th year. "Relict" to Capt. Joseph Bramhall. However, that website instead shows her as a daughter of Edmund TILSON and Elizabeth COOPER, for whom there are also memorials. Her siblings are shows as Hannah Tilson CHANDLER, Perez TILSON, and Elizabeth Tilson RANDALL. Joseph was a sea captain, his wife is buried in the old Plymouth cemetary between her niece and sister-in-law. Perez was her brother. Also near, is Joseph's Parents Joshua and Sarah Ryder Bramhall. Joseph and Sarah Tilson Bramhall had three children. Joseph's wife Sarah died three years after him in Jan. 26, 1754. Have not been able to determine who rasied the children. Evon continued to teach school while she and Dale cared for their son at home. Bob attended Hudson High School, while his mother taught there. He graduated from Lufkin High School. Bob participated in numerous Special Olympics. While working at the sheltered workshop in Lufkin, Bob took the bus every weekday to work. Evon reported that he was an extremely conscientious worker. She could never convince him to miss a day of work, even if he was sick. He would always insist on reporting for work, and would return home only when his supervisor made him go back home to go to bed. In September, 1997, Evon wrote to her niece Melinda Strong: "I have placed Bob on a waiting list to go into a group home. There is such a long waiting list it may be two years before they can take him. Don't know is I can live without him. He helps take care of me now." Jan helped her mother move Bob to a group home in Beaumont in the summer of 1998. In a phone conversation with her niece in August, 1998, Evon reported that Bob seemed very happy in this new home, and continued to go to work daily at another sheltered workshop. Bob is able to go home to visit his mother at least one weekend each month. Obituary Robert 'Bob' Dale Tisdale, 55, was born February 23, 1957 in Lufkin, Texas, the son of Dale and Evon (McLemore) Tisdale. He passed away August 24, 2012 in Castle Pines Retirement Home. Throughout his life, everyone recognized that Bob was very special. When you met him, he greeted you with a handshake, a big smile on his face and, more than likely, he was going to tell you about Jesus. Bob was a man of great faith and Jesus was number one in his life. His whole being reflected his faith and his joyful praise changed the whole atmosphere of any gathering. Throughout his life he touched so many lives and shared the love of Jesus with so many, that today as he has come face to face with his Jesus, he is no doubt hearing, 'Well done, my faithful son'. The family would like to express a special thank you to the Burke Center, Castle Pines Retirement Home, Heart-to-Heart Hospice, and all of the many healthcare professionals and caregivers that gave such tender loving care to Bob. The surviving family includes his sister and brother-in-law, Janet and A. E. 'Pete' Peterson of Lufkin; niece, Sheryl Falk and husband Richard Retz of Houston; nephew, Lee J. Rawcliffe and his daughter Emily of Houston; uncle, Thomas McLemore and wife, Bonnie, of Houston; and many cousins, other relatives and a host of friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Evon Tisdale. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 27, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel with Harold Hancock, Minister, officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday afternoon, August 26, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Gipson Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Broaddus Cemetery in Broaddus, Texas immediately following the services. Also special to George Ann was her ability to play piano by ear she enjoyed this talent and even had served various churches as pianist with the most recent being Yellowpine-Macedonia Baptist Church. She was born on January 27, 1932 in Hineston, LA to John Alton Tolbert and Essie Wilson Tolbert. Janis was born during the Great Depression, she told of how her mother had to borrow two cents to buy a postage stamp, just to let her father know of her birth. Janis always treated each item she purchased with such meticulous care because she knew what it meant to go without. She also never threw anything away; just ask her children that moved her several times throughout the years. Janis loved gardening, sewing, shopping, and fishing, this love she shared with her children. When you were around her you saw the bright light of Jesus. She strived daily to serve others, always looking to identify anything she could do to help and or ease someone's burden. Janis was very quiet but when she spoke it was with the softness of angels. She loved her family with overwhelming selflessness. Demonstrating a true servant's heart, she worked with individuals with disabilities in both Louisiana and Texas before retiring from Lufkin State School in 2001. Janis was preceded in death by her parents, John Tolbert and Essie Tolbert, brother Herman Tolbert and brother Alton Tolbert. She is survived by her four children: sons Dwight Duck and wife, Bonnie; Wade Duck and wife, Patricia; John Duck and wife, Debbie; and daughter Janet Davis and Yvette Borrero; grandchildren, Simon Duck and wife, January; Elizabeth Petrovich and husband, Brett; Cory Duck and wife, Rachel; Jonathan Duck; Justin Duck and wife, Emily; and Robin Ezernack and husband, Josh; great-grandchildren, Kainan Duck; Isabella Duck; Faith Petrovich; Christian Petrovich; Jackson Duck; MacKenzie Duck; Easton Duck; Jace Ezernack; and Elly Ezernack. He was employed at Cargill Inc. at Blair since 1998. Garry married Nicole Benjamin on Dec. 8, 2001. They later divorced. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Fremont and was a Sunday school teacher. Garry started a program at the church called the Resurrection Project. He was a Den Leader for Cub Scout Pack 104 of Fremont and was a former EMT for the Milford Volunteer Fire Department. Garry enjoyed fishing, woodworking, gardening, riding motorcycles and helping others. He is survived by son, Garrett Tomasek of Fremont; mother, Jeannette Tank of Fremont; sister, Jeannie (and husband, Ron) Marquardt of Arlington; brother, Steven (and wife, Billy Jo) Tomasek of Hampton; and nieces and nephews, Tyler, Randi, Lane, Hannah and Cole. He was preceded in death by his father. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Fremont. The Rev. Michael Knudsen will officiate. Visitation with family receiving friends will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Killian Cemetery near Morse Bluff with military honors by members of American Legion Post 340 of Morse Bluff, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8223 and Am Vets Post 20 of North Bend. On March 5, 1913, he married the former Lillie Beznoska in Fremont. She survives. Tomasek belonged to the First United Methodist Church. He is survived by two sons, Leonard and Leland, both of North Bend; a daughter, Mrs. Caroline Mastney, of Schuyler; a sister, Mabel Melton, Fremont, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. As he swung the axe down on a piece of exceptionally hard wood, a splinter flew from the ground striking him in the eye. The splinter tore Leland's eyeball badly and he was rushed to the Dodge county hospital in Fremont. A doctor was called immediately, but nothing could be done for the injured eye. Leland is under a physician's care at the hospital today and his condition was described as satisfactory, but the sight of his left eye is gone. No complications are anticipated. "Growers Honored" Leland and Leonard Tomasek were honored as Rob-See-Co Growers of the Year Monday night at a banquet in Waterloo. The North Bend brothers have grown seed corn for Rob-See-Co since 1976. The purpose of the dinner was to recognize dealers, their growers and wives, for the job they are doing in seed production and to exchange ideas on doing and even better job in the future. "Leland Tomasek Funeral Friday" Rev. Craig D. Schultz officiated at the Friday, 2 pm funeral for Leland F. Tomasek, 54, North Bend, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Fremont. Organist, Reuben Butzke, accompanied soloist, Dick Satorie. Moser Memorial Chapel, North Bend, was in charge of arrangements and burial was in Killian Cemetery. Pallbearers were Emil Ray, Bill, Gene and Larry Ruzicka, Richard and Randy Tomasek. A farmer, he had been missing since Aug. 3. His body was found Sept. 4 on a farm northwest of North Bend. The son of John and Lillie Beznoska Tomasek, he was born Oct. 27, 1929 in North Bend. On Feb. 2, 1957, he married Jeannete Renter at Columbus. Payne, Jr. on December 31, 1957 in Burkburnett, Texas. She was a patriotic military wife accompanying Chad to different military bases. Chad preceded her in death on February 9, 2008. Pat was Executive Director of the Red River Chapter of Red Cross from March 1973 to July 2003. She is survived by two sons, Scott Payne and wife Michelle of Tulsa, and Rick Payne of Duncan. Also surviving are two sisters, Mary V.
