She entered into rest at Twin Lakes Care Center in San Augustine on December 22, 2009. She had been cared for by her devoted friend of 42 years, Doris Jean Swindle, and daily caregivers Ethlene Hughes, Jearline Sigler, and Doris Malone. Mrs. Bennett joined the San Augustine community in 1957 after she married Dr. Bennett. She along with Dr. Bennett, served the community for over 30 years, providing medical care and support to numerous friends and members of the San Augustine area. She was a devoted Christian and member of the First United Methodist Church of San Augustine, Texas. Mrs, Bennett was a devoted nurse, administrator, and loving mother. Mrs. Bennett received her registered nursing (RN) certificate from Charity Hospital School of Nursing in Shreveport, LA. in 1939. She worked in a nursing program for obstetrics at Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital, a part of Columbia University, in Jersey City, NJ. Upon completion of the assignment, she returned to Shreveport and became a supervisor of Obstetrics at the CHARITY Hospital in Shreveport for several years. She continued her education by attending Northwestern State University and Centenary College to work toward her Bachelor of Sciences. Upon acceptance to the Frances P. Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Bennett received her Bachelor of Sciences in Nursing degree in 1952 and her Masters Degree in Nursing in 1953. After receiving her degrees at Case Western Reserve, she returned to Louisiana and joined the faculty of Northwestern State University as an Assistant Professor and served as Director of Clinical Nursing, Shreveport Division. She served as an officer and member of a number of national, state, and local nursing professional organizations. Mrs. Bennett, along with Dr. Bennett, served the community for over 30 years, providing medical care and support to numerous friends and members of the San Augustine area. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Dr. John Oglesbee and the Twin Lakes Care Center for their care and devotion during the last years of her life. She is preceded in death by her husband of 31 years, Dr. Noel Thomas Bennett; her parents, John and Inez Adkins; brothers J.B. Adkins and Vernon Adkins; her sister Modena Adkins Lowery; and devoted friend, Willie Ed Sigler. Those left to cherish her memory are: Sister: Maxine Adkins Mayo of Shreveport, LA. Sisters-in-law: Helen Frye Adkins of Bossier City, LA., Christine Eversull Adkins of Monroe, LA. and Maxine Bennett Lynch of Little Rock, AR. Children: Dr. Kenneth R. Bennett, Jr and wife Vickie of Grapevine, TX; Annella Bennett Nelson and husband Brad of Bossier City, LA, and Dr. Schultz J. Bennett of Mesa AZ. Grandchildren: Lydia Bennett Bonner, Anna Bennett Liddell, Dr. Freeman Bennett, Brendan Bennett, John Smollen, Susan Smollen Dale, Brett Smollen, Joel Smollen, Emily Smollen Maher, Luke Smollen, Kristen Bennett Naber, John Bennett, Lea Bennett, David Bennett, Stephen Bennett, Meredith Nelson and Bradley Nelson. A host of great-grandchildren, neices and nephews. Services will be Monday, December 28, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. in Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel with Bro. Cliff Durham officiating and burial following in Liberty Hill Memorial Garden. Pallbearers will be Brendan Bennett, David Bennett, Freeman Bennett, Stephen Bennett, Wayne Earp, Brad Mayo, Cody Mayo, Bradley Nelson, Brett Smollen, Joel Smollen, John Smollen and Luke Smollen. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, golf, gardening, college football, and old westerns. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Laverne Craig, Carolyn Woods, Kay Butler and James Adkison. Lenzner, on Tuesday morning, Jan. 31, the day preceding the 87th anniversary of his birth. Mr. Ahr has been an invalid since May, 1903, but his illness did not reach the serious stage until last Friday when lagrippe combined with heart trouble caused his death in the last five days. Gottlieb Ahr was born in Graefenhausen, Wuertenberg, Germany, on Feb. 1, 1824. He came to the United States Apr. 23, 1847, and ten years later on July 8 was married to Friedericke Stoll in Philadelphia. Leaving that city after a short residence there, they lived in Bridgeport, Conn., and Hazel Green, Wis., coming to Michigan in 1863 and seeking their fortune with other German acquantinces in a German colony near Bay Port. Mr. Ahr and his family moved to Cass City in 1868 when the town was in its infancy. Here he erected a residence and fitted up one room for a shoe repair shope and followed his occupation as a cobbler until June 19, 1901, when his companion passed away. He had since made his home with his daughter, Mrs. C.O. Lenzner. Mr. Ahr embraced the Christian life with in Bridgeport and there joined the M.E. church, later uniting with the Evangelical society when he moved to Cass City. He was an industrious and hard working man, and as a citizen respected honesty as one of the best possessions of life. He was the father of seven children, five of whom survive him: Mrs. H.S Gamble of Sebewaing, Mrs. S.W. Striffler of Argyle, T.H. Ahr of Ferrell, Idaho, Mrs. D.F. Royer of Northview, Mo., and Mrs. C.O. Lenzner of this city. The funeral service will be held in the Evangelical church this (Friday) afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Interment will be made in the family lot in Elkland cemetery. (Transcribed by Melinda McLemore Strong, Fall 2007) The July/August 2011 issue of the Cass City Area Historical and Genealogy Society, Volume 16, Number 4, featured an article about the Ahr family, and noted that the name of the Religious society where the Ahr's worked and lived prior to moving to Cass City was called Ora Labora, which means pray and work, and which was an offshot of Harmony, a religious commune located at Economy, PA. It was also reported that Ora Labora met with many problems, one of which was the constant sickness caused by malaria, which was common in the whole area for many years. They were other setbacks in the commune, and by 1871 the colony was completely abandoned. Another interesting fact in the article was that Gottlieb at one time teamed up with P. T. Barnum, repairing and making shoes for the circus people, including a pair of shoes for the tiny "Tom Thumb." |

Striffler was held Monday afternoon Mrs. Samuel W. Striffler, for many years an invalid, passed away at her home on South Seeger St., Cass City, Thursday afternoon, Nov. 4, at the age of 60 years. Pauline Ahr was born Oct. 2, 1860, in Bridgeport, Conn. At the age of eight years, she came to Cass City with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. G. Ahr. The family was among the first settlers in Elkland township, saw it pass through the ravages of two forest fires in '71 and '81 and witnessed the transformation from virgin forests to a rich agricultural section. Miss Ahr resided in Cass City until 1882 when on May 9 she was united in marriage with Samuel W. Striffler. They lived on a farm near Cass City, where their children were born, until December 1891 when the family moved to Argyle chiefly because of Mrs. Striffler's failing health. Here Mr. Striffler was engaged in the mercantile business for 28 years. Mrs. Striffler was brought to Pleasant Home Hospital at Cass City last February where she remained several months. When Mr. and Mrs. Striffler purchased a home on South Seeger St. recently, she was moved there where her death occured last Thursday. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Evangelical church where Mrs. Striffler was a member previous to her residence at Argyle. Rev. J.A. Yeomans of Midland, a former pastor of the M.E. church at Argyle where Mrs. Striffler was a faithful member, officiated at the service, assisted by Rev. Wm. Richards, pastor of the local M.E. church, and Rev. Bowman, past of the Argyle church. Songs were touchingly rendered by Mrs. Grace Wilder Harris of Caro and floral offerings were many and of a rare beauty. A large number of friends of the family came from Argyle and Hay Creek and the church never had a larger audience at a similar service. Rev. Yeomans spoke appreciatively of Mrs. Striffler's helpfulness and encouragement in the church work at Argyle where she served the congregation in several official capacities. Among a host of friends, she ranked always as a woman of refinement and sympathy, a kind neighbor, devoted mother and a true friend, and withal a woman of heroic mould in bravely meeting the disappointments of life incident to prolonged illness. Flowers not thorns, sunshine not shadow, did she scatter everywhere. Besides her husband, she leaves five children, Mrs. J.A. Sandham and Mrs. Angus McPhail, both of Cass City, Mrs. Wm. Moreton of Detroit, Fred C. Striffler of Caro and Dr. Harry Striffler of Pontiac; three sisters, Mrs. C.O. Lenzner of Cass City; Mrs. Emma Gamble of Flind and Mrs. Lydia Royer of New York City; and one brother, T.H. Ahr of Ferrell, Idaho. One son, Edward H., preceded Mrs. Striffler in death in 1903. Lenzner, a resident of Cass City for over 70 years, passed away Friday morning, May 15, at the home of her son, H.F. Lenzner, here after a two weeks' illness. Funeral services were conducted at the McPhail and Keehn Funeral home on Sunday afternoon by Rev. Stanley P. Kirn, pastor of Salem Evangelical Church. Burial was made in Elkland Cemetery. Sophia Ahr was born in Philadelphia, Pa.,on April 12, 1857, and came to Michigan in the early sixties. Her parents, the late Gottlieb and Fredericka Ahr, were members of a cooperative colony by the name of Ora Labora, near Bay Port, where Mr. Ahr was the colony's shoemaker. Following six years residence at Ora Labora the family left there in 1868 to become residents of the pioneer settlement with later developed into the village of Cass City. Sophia Ahr attended school here with other children of the early settlers of this community. On March 1, 1879, she was united in marriage with Christian Oscar Lenzner, Jr, and she has resided here continuously with the exception of two winters spent with her sister, Mrs. George MAST, in Sebewaing, and the past 17 months when she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. H. Lee POCKLINGTON, of Algonac. On April 26, Mrs. Lenzner came to Cass City to spend several weeks at her son's home. After a delightful week spent visiting old friends here, she became suddenly ill and passed away Friday, Mar 15, after two weeks's sickness. Her husband died on June 2, 1927. Mrs. Lenzner was a member of the Evangelical Church in Cass City for more than 60 years. Besides her two children, she leaves seven grandchildren and seven great granchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. George MAST of Sebewaing and Mrs. Lydia ROYER of Waynesville, Missouri. Relatives and friends who came from a distance to attend the funeral include Mrs. Wesley Moody and Mr. and Mrs. Harold L. Pocklington, Algonac; Miss Shirley Anne Lenzner, Wayne; Mrs. William Moreton, Mrs. Tyler Wood and Mrs. George Bortz, Detroit; Mr. and Mrs. A. Akerman were held at the MacPhail & Keehn Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon at two-thirty o'clock and were conducted by the Rev. Stanley P. Kirn, pastor of the Evangelical Church. Akerman was born in Stuttgart, Wurttemberg, Germany, on May 6, 1858, and came to the United States at the age of 15 years. He first resided near Forestville in Sanilac County, and on October 27, 1884, he was united in marriage with Marie Wittwer. Mr. and Mrs. Akerman left their farm near Forestville and came to Cass City in 1905. Mrs. Akerman passed away August 17, 1929 (sic). The deceased was employed as a painter and decorator in Cass City for many years until ill health compelled him to retire. He was a member of the Evangelical Church and served the congregation for many years as class leader and as a member of the board of trustees. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. H.F. Lenzner and Mrs. Joseph Benkelman, both of Cass City, and Mrs. Herbert Blodgett of Hartford City, Indiana; three granddaughters, Miss Andrene Blodgett of Marion, Indiana, Mrs. Gordon L. Thomas of Coral Gables, Florida, and Miss Shirley Anne Lenzner, of Wayne, and a step-sister, Mrs. William Miller, of Birmingham. He was born 1711 in MA. Daniel the proven son by his father's will. At the time of Thomas's death in 1715, in Cohansey, N. J., he owned an estate in Simsbury, Conn. By his will he gave that New England property to his youngest son, Daniel, who continued to reside at Cohansey. This Daniel was born in 1711 and it is through him that the name and blood came down to the southern branch of the family. In 1745 Daniel Alderman was called in to assist in the settlement of the estate of Isaac Harris of Cohansey (Book Q, page 594, Trenton). The deceased, Isaac, was a first cousin of Daniel's wife. Daniel and Abigail moved from Deerfields, New Jersey, Cohansey Precinct of Salem County, in the year 1755 to the state of North Carolina with their seven children. They came by water to Wilmington where they remained a short time. Along with many others who came about the same time they made their way forty miles inland to the newly established Duplin County. They selected a small tract of land on the west side of Doctor's Creek where they made their home." |

His father, James Minor Alexander, removed from Camden, South Carolina, to Tennessee in the year 1810. His mother was Margaret Carter prior to her marriage into the Alexander family. Having arrived at years of maturity James M. Alexander married a Miss Aiken, also a native of South Carolina, whose father removed to Tennessee about the same time the Alexander family was established there. Mr. and Mrs. James M. Alexander became the parents of six children, two sons and four daughters, of whom James Franklin is the only one now living. He was reared on the farm up to the time of his father's death in 1857, after which he went to Spring Hill, Tennessee, and there engaged in the dry goods business with which he was connected for three years. At that time the country was involved in the throes of the Civil war and Mr. Alexander espoused the cause of the south, offering his services in its defense, enlisting on the 21st of May, 1861, as a member of Company F, Third Regiment of Volunteer Infantry, the company being known as Brown's rifles, for the regiment was commanded by Colonel John C. Brown. He was afterward promoted to the rank of general and commanded a division. Dr. Alexander was with his command and brigade up to the time they left Bowling Green, Kentucky, and there he was detached on special duty for service in the pay master's and quartermaster's department. He remained with the army throughout the war and was with General Joe Johnston's command at the time of the surrender at Greenville, North Carolina.After being paroled he returned to Nashville, where he arrived on the 21st of May, 1865, just exactly four years from the time of his enlistment. The next important event in his life was his marriage, which was celebrated on the 28th of September, 1865, at which time Miss Elizabeth McLemore became his wife. She is a native of Maury county, Tennessee, and a daughter of Jefferson McLemore, of a representative family of that section of the country. Unto them have been born three children: James M., who is mentioned elsewhere in this volume; Bethenia J.; and R. Sydney McLemore Alexander [Note: Unable to verify through census records], also a practicing physician at Abilene. The wife and mother departed this life in August, 1891. Following his marriage Mr. Alexander turned his attention to farming near Spring Hill, where he remained until 1890. At that time he sold his farm and removed to Abilene, Texas, where he engaged in the drug business, having purchased the stock of P. H. Carter. This store he conducted for eight years with good success and then sold out to L. H. Bradfield, since which time he has lived retired save for the supervision of his invested interests, for he owns considerable property in this part of the state. He is a member of Abilene lodge, No. 562, B. P. O. E., and is a man of genuine worth, enjoying in high measure the esteem and confidence of those with whom he has been associated. B. B. JAMES MINOR ALEXANDER, a leading physician of Abilene, was born in Maury county, Tennessee, September 18, 1867. His father, James Franklin Alexander, is represented elsewhere in this work. In his youth Dr. Alexander remained upon his father's farm and attended the common schools of the home locality, therein mastering the common branches of English learning. After putting aside his text-books he became connected with the drug trade and while thus engaged acquired a good knowledge of chemistry and prescription work. He was thus employed for two years in Hillsboro, Texas, and this led to his desire to become a member of the medical fraternity so that ultimately he matriculated in the Louisville Medical College, at Louisville, Kentucky, from which institution he was graduated in the class of 1889. He then returned to this state for the practice of medicine, opening an office in Victoria, whence he came to Abilene in November, 1889. Here he has since resided, ever seeking for the latest discoveries and modern theories of medicine and surgery. He has at different time pursued post graduate work in the Post Graduate Hospital of New York, and has thus kept in touch with the onward march of his profession. Since locating in Abilene Dr. Alexander has built up a large and lucrative practice and is regarded as an excellent physician and skillful surgeon, having comprehensive knowledge of the principles of medical science which he applies accurately and correctly to the needs of his patients. Recognizing the need of a suitable place where the sick of the western country could receive proper attention he erected in 1904 a sanitarium at the west end of North Fifth street, in Abilene. This is a spacious two-story structure, containing about seventeen rooms and is fitted up with all modern appliances and apparatus, including the X-ray and other electrical equipments. The building is well furnished, lighted throughout with electricity and heated by steam and in fact has every comfort and convenience for its patrons in harmony with the lines of health and sanitation. Dr. Alexander is a member of both the State and Taylor County Medical Associations and his fraternal relations connect him with the Elks, the Woodmen of the World and other societies. On the 19th of November, 1896, Dr. Alexander wedded Miss Madge Quarles, a daughter of William Quarles, and a native of Charleston, Mississippi. They have one son, James Word Alexander. James Minor Alexander, builder and physician, was born on September 18, 1867, in Spring Hill, Tennessee, to James Franklin and Elizabeth (Minor) (sic) Alexander. He attended the Kentucky School of Medicine and graduated with honors in 1889 from Louisville Medical College. Later he did postgraduate work in New York, at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and in 1913 in hospitals in London, Paris, Rome, Naples, and Berlin. In 1889 he moved to Victoria, Texas, then to Abilene, where he started a practice. He opened Alexander Sanitarium, a hospital with eighteen beds, on June 1, 1904, in a two-story frame building. In 1918 he converted the structure into a school for nurses and moved his hospital into an adjacent three-story brick building with forty beds. He was joined in his Abilene practice by his brother, Dr. Sydney McLemore Alexander. Jim Alexander was credited with many medical firsts in West Texas, including the first Caesarean operation and the first two complete hysterectomies. He installed Abilene's first X-ray equipment. He closed his sanitarium in 1934 to join the staff of Hendrick Medical Center,where he later became chief of staff. He was a member of the Taylor-Jones County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association,the Southern Medical Association, and the American Medical Association. In 1925 he constructed the Alexander Building, then the tallest building in Abilene. That same year he established the Alexander Trust Estate, which placed most of his holdings in the names of his children. After his medical career was established, he acquired ranchland in Jones, Stonewall, King, Knox, and Shackelford counties. His ranching operations continued through his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was married twice, first to Madge Quarles, then to Anna Lee Burnes. He retired from medical practice in 1949 and died on November 10, 1954. He was buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Abilene. This was revealed Wednesday morning when the will was filed in the Taylor County clerk's office. He died Nov. 10 in Abilene at the age of 87. Dr. Alexander's son, Minor Alexander, was named as executor. The grandchildren are to share and share alike. The will was signed June 7, 1951, and was witnessed by L. S. Perry and E. T. Brooks. Named as beneficiaries were the grandchildren, James Randall Alexander and Sydney McLemore Alexander, sons of Syndey McLemore Alexander; grandson Sydney Elmon Niblo, son of Lurline Elizabeth Niblo; grandchildren Martha Jane Alexander, James Minor Alexander, and Frances Marian Alexander, children of Minor Alexander. An application to probate the will said Dr. Alexander possessed real and personal property of a probable value in excess of $20,000. The Abilene law firm of Brooks, Fergus and Brooks is handling the matter. Much of his estate has been divided before his death. |
