Sunday Crash Kills Lee "Jack" Corkins

Lee (Jack) Corkins, 48, Belleville, died Tuesday from injuries suffered Sunday when the hood (at right) of this car flew up and the vehicle slammed into three other cars, injuring several persons. Police have been unable to determine who was driving the car because Corkins has his brother, Gene, of Cass City, were both thrown from the car?.

Registered to Corkins Auto Sales in Cass City, the car crossed the centerline about five miles east of Caro Sunday afternoon when its hood flew up. The care tore into the three cars coming from the opposite direction, injuring five persons, three of them seriously.

Listed in critical condition Wednesday at Hills and Dales was Gene Corkins of Cass City, Jack's brother. In fair condition was Mrs. Fern A. Popp, 46, Caro. Dr. Herbert L. Nigg, M.D., Caro, also injured in the crash was listed as "showing improvement," Wednesday morning?

The autopsy was requested because both men were thrown from the car and deputies have not been able to question the survivor?.Popp and Drull both told sherrif's deputies that they saw the Corkins car coming at them at a high rate of speed with the hood up. All three cars hit by the Corkins car attempted to pull to the side of the road but the Corkins auto was too far into the other lane?.Corkins' auto was completely demolished in the front, but ironically, the hood which caused the accident suffered slight damage.

6132 I21616  Corre  Marsha L.  28 Dec 1942  6 Dec 2007  Nevadans donate $15,880 to Clinton fund (Tim Starks, Donrey Washington Bureau)

WASHINGTON -- Some gave out of anger. Some gave out of sympathy. Overall, Nevadans donated $15,880 over the past six months of 1998 to ease President Clinton's multimillion-dollar legal bills.
The Clinton Legal Defense Trust attracted money from 115 Nevadans from July through December, according to an accounting the trustees made public this week.
Donations from the Silver State were a drop in the bucket as the fund took in $2.3 million from 29,500 contributions nationwide over the last half of the year.
Since the fund was established earlier in 1998, it has raised more than $4.5 million to pay the president's legal bills, trustees sai
Most donors from Nevada gave $50 or less. One man from Reno sent $2.
One donor, Arthur M. Goldberg of Las Vegas, accounted for nearly two-thirds of Nevada contributions by himself. He gave the maximum $10,000. Goldberg, president of Park Place Entertainment Inc., has donated money to the president before.
Other Nevadans said they were happy to help the president.
The last six months of the year were particularly dark for Clinton as independent counsel Kenneth Starr completed his report and sent it to Congress, and the House of Representatives approved two articles of impeach- ment.
"The amounts involved with the bills are staggering," said Las Vegan Michael Fogarty, a 58-year-old retired pilot who gave $200 to the fund.
"What I gave is a pittance compared to the unlimited budget the prosecutor had to do whatever he wanted, to whomever he wanted to do it to
Starr has spent more than $40 million investigating the president, according to the Justice Department. Clinton's legal bills will top $10 million, according to Anthony Essaye, executive director of the Clinton defense fund.
Fogarty said he made his donation because he viewed the impeachment as "a rather vicious attack" by Republicans.
Marsha Corre, a 56-year-old retail saleswoman at Waterford-Wedgwood USA at Belz Factory Outlet World, also blamed Republicans.
"The whole thing was a Republican vendetta," she said. "I feel he's had to take more crap than any president who's ever been in office. They couldn't find anything to convict him with, so they just latched on to the sex thing."
Corre calls herself a longtime supporter who has donated money to the Democrats and Clinton before, and likely will do so again. When she heard of the defense fund, she immediately wanted to help.
"Unlike many presidents before him, he's not a rich man," Corre said of Clinton. "I thought I would give him a little help. It's a drop in the bucket of the millions he owes, but what I've heard is a lot of people like me are giving a little, too."

6142 I33321  Coulbourn  Jane Warren  5 Oct 1914  20 Jan 2009  Jane Coulbourn McLemore died Tuesday evening, Jan. 20, 2009, after a brief illness. She was 94. Born in Waverly, she was the daughter of U.O. Coulbourn and Elizabeth Sykes Coulbourn. She attended Longwood College and advanced her education in the practice of art at Richmond Professional Institute, now Virginia Commonwealth University.

As a young teacher, Mrs. McLemore came to Suffolk and married the late James L. McLemore Jr. Together for 61 years, they were Suffolk residents for their entire married life and members of Main Street United Methodist Church. Mrs. McLemore's interests included her memberships in the Suffolk Literary Club, the Nansemond River Garden Club, and the Suffolk Art League. She enjoyed her artistic talents through decorative arts, flower arranging, and in her later years, painting still life scenes. She was also an avid gardener and loved her Bridge Club.

Her greatest earthly joy was her family; her husband and three children were devoted to her. She is survived by two sons and a daughter, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: son, James L. McLemore III and wife, Mardane, of Suffolk; their three children, James L. McLemore IV, Thomas B. McLemore and Sarah Elizabeth McLemore: daughter, Elizabeth M. White and husband, Al, of Poquoson, their daughter, Jane Garrett M. White: son, John C. McLemore and wife, Lillian, of Norfolk, their three daughters, Maria Elizabeth McLemore, Ann Bolling McLemore and Katherine James McLemore.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 24 at 2 p.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Robert J. Parks. Burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery will be private. Visitation with the family will be Friday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, 509 West Washington St., Suffolk. Condolences may be registered at www.rwbakerfh.com.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church, 202 N. Main St., Suffolk, VA 23434 or the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1515, Suffolk, VA 23439-1515.

Jim McLemore posted, in March 2003, that his mother "was nee, Jane Warren Coulbourn, daughter of Uriah Oscar Coulbourn (& Elizabeth Bradley Sykes), son of George William Coulbourn (& Mary Fooks), son of John Coulbourn (& Priscilla Ward), son of John Coulbourn and his wife Rachel Laws. All of these Coulbourn men at one time or another lived in Worcester Co., MD. The earliest John had some connection to the Somerset Co., MD family, but I am not sure how. I have had one person tell me that he descended from the immigrant William's son Robert, but he had deduced that by analysis and a process of elimination (a process with which I am not totally unfamiliar!), so I'm still looking for confirmation."
