Fern Maier

Mrs. Fern Nan Maier, 96, of Cass City died Wednesday, Feb. 10, at Provincial House.

She was born June 19, 1889, in Grant Township, the daughter of Seward and Agnes (McAulay) Cooley.

Miss Cooley married Fred Maier Aug. 29, 1939, in Fayette, Ohio. Following their marriage, they made their home in Cass City. Mr. Maier died July 24, 1963 (sic).

Mrs. Maier was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Cass City and was its youth choir director many years ago.

She is survived by two nephews, Fred Cooley of Owendale and John Cooley of Fairfax, Iowa; 2 nieces, Mrs. Ina Greenfield of Millington and Mrs. Jack (Sarah) Angel of Greenville, Calif. and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

Her twin sister, Florence Cooley, on brother, Arthur Cooley Sr., and a nephew, Arthur Cooley Jr., preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held Friday at Little's Funeral Home with Rev. S. Joe Robertson, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church of Cass City, officiating.

Burial was in Elkland Cemetery, Cass City.

5929 I23919  Coons  George Barney  13 Dec 1885  27 Feb 1954  The 1930 Census shows that George and Stella were married and were living in Port Arthur, Texas. He was shown as owning his home, worth $10,000. He was the proprietor of a Cafe, and she was a waitress at a Cafe, presumably his. George may have been previously married, as his age at the time of his first marriage was 32. Stella would have only been 16 at the time--and at the time of the 1920 Census, she was listed as still living with her parent's in Wyoming, and listed as being age 17.

Living with George and Stella in 1930 was 18 year old Floyd D. NICHOLS, Nephew. He born in Montana to parents both born in Michigan. Both George, and his parents, were born in Michigan as well. Floyd was a bell-boy at a hotel.

FindAGrave indicates that his parents were Andrew Phillip COONS and Emma Josephine DIETZ.

5984 I41785  Cooper  John Daniel  26 Jun 1861  10 Dec 1939  J. D. Cooper, Brookeland, was on a list of 11 members of the Sabine County Medical Society, June 1910, in the TEXA STATE JOURNAL OF MEDICINE, published in 1911.

From FindAGrave:

He was a physician and surgeon who made his home in Brookland, Texas, where he practiced medicine until his death. He had grown up on a farm, but became interested in medicine through Dr. Daniel Matthew Cooper, his father's brother. He studied medicine at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and began his practice in 1895. He later attended Texas Christian University at Fort Worth, Texas and received a degree there in 1908. He was the typical "country doctor" going where ever he was needed, and began his practice on foot if a horse was not available or could not get to the patient quick enough. His services grew indispensable to the many families whom he served for almost a half century. He was a member of the Order of Odd Fellows, and Christian Church, and the State and County Medical Associations.

Sheriff H.S. Sharp and his deputy, Jim Greer, arrested John Henry Cooper and Clyde Robinson in Rebecca (southern part of San Augustine county) and charged them with assault to murder Dennis Armstrong. Dr. Ellington, who treated Armstrong, said he had a severe head injury. His skull was fractured when he was struck with a shotgun breaking the stock.

They built their first home, a log house, a short distance from Pineland, and later build a larger house north of the present town site on the east side of Highway 87. He went into the mercantile business and owned a store and a sawmill at Yellowpine, Texas. He was also a farmer and a breeder of livestock. His hobbies were fishing and hunting and he was said to have been one of the best in his community. He was elected Commissioner of the Sabine County Board of Supervisors, and as Commissioner, he ordered the County to buy in 1870 the first iron safe for the records of the County Clerk. Later the courthouse burned and all the records were destroyed."  STR06
