5145 I41152  Clark  Kathleen A.  8 Oct 1908  8 Sep 2008  Kathleen Clark Fisher of Beaumont, Texas died peacefully in her home the morning of September 8, 2009. Mrs. Fisher, a native of San Augustine, Texas, was preceded in death by her mother, Leila Downs Clark; father, John David Clark; sister, Leola Monique Butts; and brothers, Herman Downs Clark and Ambassador Edward Aubrey Clark, all members of a Texas pioneer family. She was married to the late United States District Judge Joseph J. Fisher. She is the mother of five children, the late Leila Fisher Thomas; Joseph J. Fisher, Jr. of Beaumont; John Clark Fisher of San Augustine; Guy Cade Fisher of Austin; and Anne Fisher Winslow of Beaumont. She was also blessed with 16 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren.

Mrs. Fisher graduated from Southwestern University in Georgetown and was elected by the alumnae association to receive the Distinguished Alumnae Award in 1982. She was a dedicated member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a past member of the Trinity Day School board. Her commitment to community involvement is evidenced by her service to and long-standing membership in the Magnolia Garden Club; the Col. George Moffett Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; the Beaumont Chapter of the Colonial Dames of America; the Art Museum of Southeast Texas; the Beaumont Heritage Society; the Texas Gulf Historical Society; the Zeta Tau Alpha, Lamda Chapter; the Jasper Civic Club; the Texas Historical Foundation; the Texas State Democratic Committee; and the San Augustine Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

Admired by many for her strength and character as well as her warmth, grace and humor, Mrs. Fisher loved to entertain and published a cookbook in 1962 entitled Justice in the Kitchen. Guests were often given autographed copies, and her family remembers happily feasting on many of the delicious recipes at holiday meals and family gatherings. Mrs. Fisher was a formidable bridge opponent and Life Master. In quiet moments she loved gardening, growing beautiful roses, sitting on the porch of her beach house in the Gulf breeze, and spending summers at Fisher's Hut in the mountains of Colorado with her family. Mrs. Fisher celebrated her 100th birthday last October surrounded by her children and grandchildren, as well as hundreds of friends from Beaumont, San Augustine and beyond. The joy in her face upon seeing all the lives she had touched over a century was a gift to all who were there to share such a special day. The family thanks Gloria Ramos and Edna Morris for their years of dedication and loving care.

A visitation will be held Friday, September 11, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Broussard's Mortuary located at 1605 Major Drive, Beaumont, Texas. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 12 at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church located at 3430 Harrison Ave., Beaumont, Texas. A graveside service at 4:00 the same day will be held at Liberty Hill Cemetery three miles north of San Augustine on Highway 147. Serving as pallbearers are Mrs. Fisher's grandchildren Kathleen Dies Munger, Robert Howard Dies, David Jefferson Fisher, Elizabeth Fisher Monroe, Martha Fisher Ruff, Mary Fisher Barber, John Clark Fisher, Jr., Guy Gladstone Fisher, Joseph Jefferson Fisher II, Mary Cade Fisher Evans, Edward Downs Fisher, Jefferson Park Winslow, Kathleen Winslow Morgan, Clark Thomas Winslow, Caroline Winslow Heinz, Thomas Fisher Winslow, Amy Clark Munger, Kathleen Anne Freeman, and Elizabeth Seymour Munger. 5171 I15549  Clark  Mary  Abt 30 Sep 1638  28 Apr 1663  Benjamin Dwight wrote that she was a "Daughter of Joseph CLARK of Windsor, Ct., and Frances---who m. March 22, 1639, for a second husband Thomas DEWEY of Westfield, Mass.---the progenitor of many DEWEY families of this country. (Vol. I, p. 20).

However, according to a post on GenForum, Surnames, Clark Family Genealogy Forum, this appears to be incorrect:

The Mary Clark who married John Strong is not the same person as the one who married Joseph Bird. They have often been confused.

Mary Clark who married Joseph Bird was without question the daughter of Joseph Clark of Windsor, CT. She and her brother Joseph are both named in Joseph's will of 1641. (He died 19 Apr 1641; the mother predeceased the father in 1639.) Joseph, Jr. died 2 May 1659, with his portion of the estate going to his sister Mary, age 21 in 1659. All of this is documented in Manwaring, "Early CT Probate Records," p. 108, vol. II. The original records are available on microfilm at the CT State Library in Hartford. I have seen several of them.

The "other" Mary Clark is more of a mystery, but Clarence Almon Torrey himself cleared up the controversy in July 1928 with an article in the NY Genealogical and Biographical Record," vol. 59, pp. 214-215.

In this short article, he discusses the misidentification by the "Dewey Genealogy," of the Mary Clarke who married John Strong, Jr., as the daughter of Joseph and Frances Clarke of Windsor. He proves the following three points:

(1) That Frances (_____) Clarke, widow, of Windsor, CT, who married Thomas Dewey, was not Joseph Clarke's widow.
(2) That it was Frances Clarke's daughter Mary, who married John Strong, Jr.
(3) That Joseph Clarke had a daughter Mary who became the wife of Joseph Bird of Farmington.

In short, Thomas Dewey and Frances Clarke were married March 22, 1638/9. Joseph Clark's wife died April 3, 1639. Joseph Clarke made his will Dec. 1, 1640. He died April 1641. Therefore Joseph Clarke died more than two years after Thomas Dewey married Francis Clarke and that Joseph's wife also died subsequent to this marriage. In Torrey's words, "Frances Clarke could not have been Joseph's widow."

The first husband of France Clarke is unknown, as is Frances' maiden name, according to Torrey.

The article is a model of quality genealogical deduction, BTW. Definitely worth seeking out a copy!

5173 I28235  Clark  Mary Alif  4 May 1915  15 Nov 2015  Larry Crocker shows that she married (1) Elbert Dean SIMMONS, and they were the parents of Marvin Dean (b. 4 Aug 1936 in Newton County) and Betty Jean SIMMONS (b. 14 Sep 1939); (2) Joseph Johnson POLLARD, Jr., and they were the parents of Carolyn Ann POLLARD (born 4 Dec 1947 in Pineland, Sabine County, Texas); and (3) John William COTTEN.

Mary "Alif" Cotten, by some, fondly remembered as "Puddin", went to be with Jesus on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at the age of one hundred, six months, and one day. She was born on May 14, 1915, in Sabine County to Frances Edward "Edna" Ener and James Anderson Clark.

Mom learned to sew at a very young age and this benefited her greatly throughout her life. She sewed for family, friends, and was a seamstress at a cleaners for part of her working career. Her nieces, Edna Earl and Francis , who grew up with her, shared that she not only made her own clothes but also made theirs as well. I as her youngest daughter always had pretty clothes, bed spreads and curtains, a beautiful wedding gown, and finally, children who always looked adorable in their clothes Grandma made them. This could have been the beginning of always doing for others. While attending and completing high school in Pineland, she enjoyed playing on the basketball team.

Mother lived in Beaumont for most of her adult years and held several jobs as she provided for her three children with support from the family who were always there for each other with love. While working at Montgomery Wards as a receiving clerk, she met and later married John William Cotten in 1954. They were married for thirty-two years before he passed on September 18, 1986. After his death, mother moved to Lumberton just down the street from me, her youngest daughter, where my family enjoyed many happy times and much love and support in sorrowful and difficult times. The legacy that began many years before with Grandma and Grandpa Clark, of family always helping one another, continued on. In her mid-eighties, she moved back to Beaumont living in two retirement homes and finally settling at Serenity Assisted Living where she resided till she went home peacefully.

In honor of my mother, I would like to share her testimony. Around sixty years ago, mother heard a sermon at Central Baptist regarding forgiveness. Even though she was Christian from a very young age, she often felt unworthy to serve in a leadership role in the Christian Community, however this sermon opened her eyes to the Lord's unconditional love and from that day forward, mother was able to forgive herself as well. She then sang in the church choir, became active in the WMU where she served as President for many years, and taught Sunday school classes well into her mid 80's. Upon moving into the various retirement homes and being no longer able to attend her home church services, she read her Bible daily and prayed for family and friends. For those of you who are here today, I truly believe you were in those fervent prayers. In lieu of a commemorative video, my sister and I beseech each of you to picture, remember and reflect on each special memory dear to your hearts. Part of those memories pictured are of mother's love for times spent at Grandpa Clark's, family reunions, holiday gatherings, and especially the many years our brother Marvin and his family from Tennessee spent Christmas's in our home filling it with memories that will always remain in our hearts.

Some of the happiest memories will be of the travels she made throughout the states and Europe with family and friends. Many of us who were close to Mom knew her love and passion for sitting around a table playing games such as Mexican Train, Chicken Foot, Go Fish, with the younger group, Wahoo, and most of all Skip-Bo, which led to her being affectionately known as the "Skip-Bo Queen".

May we honor a long life of one hundred years by carrying on the legacy she made for us which is to live out a strong faith in our Heavenly Father and always praying fervently for one another.

5184 I46002  Clark  Minnie Lucille  Abt 1897  Yes, date unknown  On the FindAGrave memorial page of her husband, Floyd Horace Melemore,, their is a link to hsi wife, Minnie. The first name and age appear accurate, but due to the fact her headstone is inscribed Minnie Carawy McLemore, and that she is buried in a different cemetery than her husband, Pinecrest Cemetery & Mausoleum in Vidalia, Georgia instead of Riverdale Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia, this may not be correct. Other records should be examined to verify.  STR06
