4108 I8355  Campbell  Elon A.  Abt 1814  Yes, date unknown  Email from Sharla Linex Johnson, received April 23, 2001:

My gggg Uncle, Elon CAMPBELL married Mary Strickland 1846 Sabine Parish, LA... in 1849, upon hearing the whereabouts and death of his father, they set off to Anderson CO., TX so that Elon could claim his 3rd of the share of his father's inheritance.

They are on the 1850 Anderson CO., TX census....They had two children in TX, and after 1853 and before 1860, they are back in Sabine Parish, LA. They had a child in 1853 Anderson CO., and they are on the 1860 Sabine Parish, census.

Mary was born abt. 1832 LA. Elon was born between 1809-1815 MS. I've recently heard from another STRICKLAND researcher, who says, Yes, Mary is the daughter of Noah.

Elon CAMPBELL married in Franklin CO. MS to Sarah Jane DUNN... at some point after 1840 he left his family there and evidently went to Sabine Parish, LA...I've often wondered why??? I thought it may be the CARTER's... his mother was Selah CARTER, born in MS.. abt 179?

Elon and Mary are in Desoto Parish, LA, in 1870.. He is listed as E A CAMPBELL, on both 1860-1870 census'. I'm really trying to find the CARTER connection... Was it them, who took Elon to Sabine Parish???

I have alot of info on the CAMPBELL's.... not really the CARTER's..

Thanks again for getting back to me... I hope this helps you with more on your STRICKLAND's.

4115 I16310  Campbell  Isaac  Abt 1813  7 Sep 1843  CAMPBELL, ISAAC (ca. 1813? 1843). Isaac Campbell, Republic of Texas congressman, was born about 1813. He moved to Texas in January 1836 as a single man and settled in San Augustine County, where he married Elizabeth Holman. From December 5, 1838, to January 24, 1839, he represented San Augustine County in the House of Representatives of the Third Congress of the republic and was one of the commissioners who selected the site of the city of Austin. Campbell was a royal arch Mason, a charter member in 1837 of the McFarland Lodge in San Augustine, and a representative in 1838 of the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas. He assisted in formation of the Rising Star chapter in 1841. In 1839 early Texas architect and master builder Augustus Phelps built Campbell a two-story Greek-Revival home on Main Street in San Augustine. The home was sold to Matthew Cartwright in 1847 and was still in excellent condition in 1990. Campbell lived there until his death on September 7, 1843. The probate of his estate was not filed until December 19, 1846.

World War II Draft registration cards, on the same website, show he was born in Hemphill on 7 Jan 1894. The 1920 census instead shows his place of birth as Louisiana.

Bonnie Hyden, a granddaughter, writes that "Grandpa was born in Rainbow, Louisiana...if I remember correctly. He was a prize fighter in his younger days...and quite good, from what Dad says. He ended up in Galveston, Tx at one point. One day he was in a small cafe where a man started a ruckus...which Grandpa finished for him and threw the man out! Grandpa was not a big man...he just had all the right moves. ;-) The owner of the cafe was a Greek man and he was impressed with Grandpa...so he hired him. This started Grandpa in the cafe business. Somehow, he ended up in Lufkin, Texas where he met Bessie Register...Grandma Cannon. The Registers were a fairly "well-to-do" family in Lufkin and they didn't take too kindly to Grandma taking a shine to Grandpa! As I hear, the Registers NEVER cared for Grandpa...and the feeling was mutual. Dad says that Grandpa had lived a fairly "free" lifestyle and loved to dance. Grandma was a devout Nazarene and therefore dancing was a BIG no-no. For her...Grandpa gave up bars, dancing and all his wild ways. At some point they moved to Hemphill, Texas where Grandpa opened up a cafe on the town square. Grandma was always in poor health and having all those kids didn't help any. She was in and out of hospitals, and such facilities. I've heard she was hospitalized when she gave birth to Aunt Marguerite and was sedated to the point that she did not remember the birth...and didn't believe that was her baby! Dad says that he has one memory of them all sitting down at the table for supper, as a family. Grandpa was always working at the cafe; Grandma was always sick. Gramdma passed away when Dad was 12. The older kids were big enough to go out on their own but Dad and two younger brothers were pretty much on their own...they thought. Dad says now that he realizes everyone in town was watching them and would report to Grandpa on their activities and whereabouts, although he didn't know it then. Which was cause for some confusion when they'd come to the cafe or home and Grandpa would give them a switchin' for some supposed secret...yet wrong deed! lol

Grandpa was a man of rigid yet right principles and he didn't mind at all standing up for what was right. One story says that he ran a preacher out of town because he was teaching from some "new" Bible which, apparently, didn't quite line up with the one Grandpa had. My favorite story, from Dad, concerns two men who had been out all night drinking and decided to stop in to the cafe for a bite to eat. Upon entering the cafe they got loud, vulgar and disruptive running off most of Grandpa's customers. This did NOT sit well with Grandpa Cannon! The two men seated themselves at the counter and ORDERED a steak meal. Grandpa silently went into the kitchen, slapped two steaks on the grill, turned them over and then slapped them into the plate...about that fast. He finished their dinners off with cold, day old mashed 'taters and whatever vegetable he had sitting there...waiting to go into the hog slop. He then took the plates to the end of the counter and slid them down the counter to his "customers". Dad says that Grandpa consider sliding a plate to a customer the height of rudeness. The two men took one look at their plates and didn't like what they saw. But...when they looked up at Grandpa to "protest"...they were looking straight into the barrel of his .45 which he kept under the counter. He ordered them to eat their dinners...every last bit...then he made them pay and told them to get out and don't EVER come back. When the men got to their truck, they were a bit "aggravated" so they figured they'd teach J.N a lesson. (That's what everyone around here knew Grandpa by). The men retrieved their shotguns from their truck and commenced to shooting out the large picture windows of the cafe! Grandpa answered them back with his .45 and actually wounded one of the men. That convinced the other man that Grandpa wasn't up for being bullied and he put his gun down. The wounded man was rushed to the local dr and the Sheriff stopped in to the cafe to question Grandpa. Grandpa asked the Sheriff, "Did I call you?" The Sheriff replied, "Well no, J.N. But hell! You shot a man! I have to get a statement from you." Grandpa stated, "There are only two reasons you need to be in my establishment. 1) to eat. 2) if I call you. I didn't call you. So, are you here to eat?" Sheriff, "No...but...J.N....we have to clear this up!" Grandpa, "It's clear. They ran off my customers, they trashed my place. I shot what I was aiming at and the whole thing came to an end. Now...if you're not eating, I think it best you leave." And...the Sheriff left. BUT...Grandpa then went everyday and visited the man he had shot, taking him free meals (since hospital food wasn't any good, he said) and they were good friends after that.

I only have a handful of personal memories of Grandpa since we lived out of state, but in his later years he operated a fruit stand at the corner of the square. I remember stopping by there once and never in my short life had I ever seen such."

Following info. about the Joshua Cantrill family from Anette Stanley Rardin, posted on the Cantrell Family Genealogy Forum, Aug. 12, 1998.........

"It is possible that Joshua Cantrill was a relative. He lived in Pittsylvania Co., VA, in the 1780s. In 1794 in Mercer Co., KY., Lewis Castleman sued Joshua Cantrill regarding an unpaid debt. He is found on the 1800 census in Montgomery Co., KY. He signed his will on 20/26 Aug. 1800 and it was probated Oct. 14, 1800, Montgomery Co., KY. He named wife Ann and children: Wyatt, Zebulon, Joshua, and William. Executors: Zebulon Cantrill and James Graham. Witnessed by Thomas Isles/Iles, J./I. H. Jenkins, and Andrew Biggs. (Montgomery County Will Abstracts compiled by Mrs. W.P. Oldham, pp. 77, 83 (another abstract of same will, but Wyatt was omitted and there are a few changes in spellings.) From Kentucky Records - Early Wills and Marriages, Old Bible Records and Tombstone Inscriptions, by Julia Ardery, Baltimore: Genealogical Pub. Co., 1969.) It is possible that Mary Cantrill who married Morris Thomas was also a relative. Morris and Mary left Chester Co., PA., in 1777 and moved to what is now Hardy Co., WVA. Their descendants lived in Hardy Co., now WVA, Pittsylvania Co., VA., and Mercer Co., KY."

4161 I38356  Cantrall  Levi  10 Oct 1787  22 Feb 1860  Levi Cantrall, the seventh son of Joshua, was born October 1, 1787, in Virginia. His parents moved to Kentucky in 1789. He was there married to Fanny England, November 30, 1809. Sher was born October 2, 1792. They moved to Ohio, then to Illinois, reaching the place where Springfield now stands, December 4, 1819. They journeyed to a place near where the town of Cantrall now is, and there improved a farm where Mr. Cantrall lived until his death. The following notes are taken from writing left by him:

"December 4, I camped where Springfield now is a city. December 5, came across the Sangamon River and on the 7th looked for the location I now live on. December 8 set to build a cabin and got one raised and chinked and chimney up to the mantle, and the weather set in so hard that mortar could not be used. December 24 the snow began to fall, one snow after another, until it was two feet on a level and became extremely cold until the 11th of February. On the night of the 11th it moderated and rained until 12 o'clock. At this date there was Wyatt Cantrall, Matthew Holland, Alexander Crawford, Henry Crawford, Kellogg, John Dixon and myself, on the way to the American bottom for provisions. In the evening changed severely cold. Camped at Hickory Point. Met William Proctor with a lot of stock hogs and 112th camped together. December 13th camped at Dory Ford. By this time our company numbered 10 men and seven teams. December 14 camped at Padies on Kohoky Creek. December 15 to the American bottom to the six-mile prairie, then loaded up with meal and flour. On the 18th started home with 14 head of hogs, and the weather was thawing in the day and freezing at night and the waters began to rise and got so we had to head some streams. Some days we had to break the ice so as to let the hogs get through the sloughs. At night was cold. We come to old Father Bans, who was stuck in a snowdrift for three days with a load of corn. He was badly frost bitten. We helped him out and kept him in company with us till we got to Brush Creek. There we cut him a good supply of wood for fire. The water was so high that he was to stay until and water fell, but after we left, the old man ventured in and lost a part of his corn. He was a cripple all summer with the freezing of his feet.
The next day we got seven miles to Sugar Creek. There we had to cut timber and build a bridge on the ice and drove our hogs on the ice and swim out on the land. We got over and camped. Traveled one mile that day. New Day got to where the steam distillery stand, (where the C. & A. now crosses Sangamon, north of Springfield, and camped. By this time the river got over the banks and no ferry boat or canoe, we got a grubbing hoe and our ax and made a trough, and Bro. Wyatt came across to get tools to build canoe, but did not return for days. Fourth day while I was in camp Stephen England come with a family to the camp, and we sent a boy to Mr. Kelly's, where the city of Springfield now is, for a set of tools and made a canoe and commended swimming and ferrying with the canoe, and on the twenty-first day from the start we and party arrived in good health and spirits.
The snow yet remained in drifts until the 10th of March. The spring was fine and we began to improve. On the 25th day of April there was a heavy rain and that was the last till the 19th of July. The drought set in the the late planted corn never came up until the July rain, and in May, the 26th, there was a frost that cut the corn to the ground.
The season was so bad that we thought about moving back to the settlement, but in August went down to the American bottom and got a load of corn, and Bro. Wyatt and as far as where Selly mill stands, and my team stuck fast in the mud. There I had to unload the corn and reload one of the hottest days in August. All the drink was out of a horse track while I was doing this. Bro Wyatt had gone across to Spring Creek to Elias mill to get grinding. In a few days I went down to the Ridge Prairie and bought a set of mill stones and built what we then called a band mill, constructed by a large wheel 40 feet over and a rawhide or a tug around a wheel, and ground the first grain ever on the north side of the Sangamon River in the fall of 1820. Then the people came to my mill for thirty miles and in 1822, in the spring, I built a water mill. that was the only chance for the north for fifty miles for a while.
In the fall of 1830 I built a saw mill. The season was very dry, so that I could not grand none and had my hands to dig the foundation deep in the bed of the creek and in the month of November there came one shower and I caught enough of water to saw eighty feet of lumber and then it began to snow and snowed one snow after another, till it was four feet on a level and drifted till in covered the stake and ride red fences and in many places was seven or eight feet deep. On my farm, too, it took two good yoke of oxen to haul one shock of fodder and continued so till in February 1831."

"Levi" was left an orphan when twelve years old and was bound to a man who was a tanner. He was whipped so severely that he carried the scars, showing them in his old age to friends. At the age of fourteen he ran away from his master and made his own living. He taught his children to show kindness to the poor and needy by relating to them his onw hardships when young. Quoted from the book "The Cantrell Family" by Carmi G. Cantrell.

4166 I38345  Cantrell  Wyatt  20 Dec 1790  25 Oct 1877  Wyatt was born December 20, 1790 in Bath County, KY., the same year that his parents moved from Bote tourt County, VA. He married Sally England and moved to Clarke County, OH., where they had three children. They then moved in company with her father, Stephen England, to St. Clair County, IL., in the fall of 1819, and in the spring of 1819, they built homes in what is now Fancy Creek, township in Sangamon County, IL., where they had six children. Wyatt and Levi lived on adjoining farms just north of Cantrall, IL. Taken from the book "The Cantrell Family" by Carmi G. Cantrell.
There Wyatt remained until after the death of his wife, Sally, on August 1, 1840. In the fall of 1841, he married Mrs. Polly Kingsbury, whose maiden name was Foster. She died about 1859.

Wyatt came to Whiteside County, IL "in 1836 and located near Sterling. He made claim of the prairie in the bend of the river, and also of the large island in Rock River, long since known as Cantrell's Island, upon which there was a large growth of timber. In 1838 he built a mill on the rapids of Rock River, getting his power by making adam of loose stones ............ It was at this mill that the people on the east and south side of Whiteside and the north side of Henry and Bureau Counties had their grists ground for ten years.
Mr. Cantrell took a prominent part in the affairs of the community during the early days, and was always regarded as a straightforward, honest, public-spirited man. He died recently at his son's residence in Kansas. (William and Stephen lived at Black Bob, Johnson County, Kansas). His remains were brought to Sterling, and buried October 31, 1877.
