He had been in ill health for the last two years. The prominently known Burr Oak Township farmer was born near Sturgis, Michigan Nov. 1, 1866, a son of August and Mary (Kasdorf) Buchholz. He was married to Augusta Jesse Sept. 30, 1896 at her home in Sherman Township. Mr. Buchholz was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. Surviving besides his wife at home is a son, Carl, and daughter, Mrs. John (Nina) Falkenstein, both of Sturgis, and a sister Mrs. Emma Meyers of Burr Oak, and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the Fogelsong Funeral Home until 10 am Thursday. Following that hour the body will lie in state at Trinity Lutheran Church where rites will be held at 2 pm Thursday with the Rev. Leland Lochhaas officiating. Burial services will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery. She was born September 4, 1928, in Bathgate, North Dakota, to William and Ellen Buck. Dolores married John Joseph Young on November 11, 1949, in Lincoln, Neb., and their family legacy began. She was the mother of 11 children, known as Granny to 29 grandchildren, and as Granny Great to 9. This made for wonderful celebrations at birthdays, holidays and other family gatherings. She created treasured memories that will last many lifetimes. Dolores loved life and lived it to the fullest. Over the years, she was active in the Cathedral of the Risen Christ Parish and served as Altar Society president. She was a founding member of Cathedral's Perpetual Adoration, which recently celebrated its 55th year of existence. She was a volunteer for The Pink Sisters and for The Legacy Retirement Center and other assisted living communities, helping community members get to Mass. Dolores loved to entertain and as a member of the Navy Wives, the Catholic Daughters of America, and various bridge groups, she excelled at it. Most memorable are her Groundhog's Day Luncheons held each year for the last 48 years. Being invested as a Lady of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem was an honor of a lifetime for her. Her faith was at the center of everything important to her. She enjoyed her traveling experiences, including trips on the Oregon Trail with her grandchildren, Rome, Jerusalem, Denmark, Taiwan, Brazil and many visits to Vail with friends and family. Church, bridge, golf, and family were her passions. Family members include her children: Joe (Joy) Young, Jeanne (Dick) Ostlund, Bob (Eileen) Young, Fran Jones, Nancy (Larry) Becwar, Terry (Jim) Byfield, Sharon (John) Beckwith, Suzy (Tony) Huffer, Chris Young, Cathy (Jeff) Hausman. Grandchildren Dana and David Young, Jamie (Andy) Jakub, Lissy (Brad) Helmink, Abby (Tom) McCleister, Summer and Scott Young, Tim (Jessica) Jones, Kevin (Shari) Jones, Elizabeth Jones, Lane (Paige) Becwar, Grant and Kaity Becwar, Julie (Derek) Nordquist, Amy, Danny, and Brian Byfield, Matt and Adam Beckwith, Whitney and Kelsey Huffer, Alison, A.J., Angie, and Anna Young, Will, Hap, Gigi and Huey Hausman. Great grandchildren: Sam, Owen, and Elliot Jakub, Oliver and Gus Helmink, Carter Jones, Payton and Ty Shoup, Linley Nordquist. Brother, Don (Joyce) Buck. Sister-in-law, Betty Buck. Brothers-in-law, Charles Hinchey and Henry Morgan, and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by husband, Joe and son, Steve. True mother and friend to many, we were all blessed to learn valuable lessons from Dolores during her 86 years. She was an inspiration. Mary Jane was born on April 28, 1936 in Pineland, Texas to the late John Dewey Buckley and Eva Josephine Craig Buckley. She attended school in Pineland and worked at several places over her lifetime, including West Sabine High School cafeteria, Temple Lumber Company, Fin & Feather Marina, San Augustine Fiberglass boat plant and Brookshire Brothers gas pumps. She loved reading, playing board games, jigsaw puzzles, listening to country music, gardening and canning. She could hum tunes while working that were like the actual songs. She will be greatly missed by all her friends and family. Mary Jane is survived by her son, JD Brown and wife, Martha, of Pineland; her daughters, Sandra Crow and husband, Billy John, of Pineland and Nomia Mistretta of Nacogdoches; son-in-law, Earl White; 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 18 great great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Willis Pat Brown, Arvil White, and Roy Townsend; her daughter, Mary Ann (Brown) White; her son, Willis Pat Brown, Jr.; her sisters, Velma Westmoreland, Rosa Breedlove, Lucille Miller and Anne Lou Loper; and her brother, T. J. Buckley. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2023 at Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr Street, Hemphill, Texas. Paula was one of the original Rocketts at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, New York. After leaving the Rocketts, she enjoyed traveling and seeing the world. Mrs. Forbes was a retired Real Estate agenty and a former member of the Houston Association of Realtors, the Texas Association of Realtors, a life long member of South Main Baptist Church where she attended the Hope of Miriam Sunday School Classes. She was an avid gardener and a charter member of the Rivercrest Garden Club, and served several times as the Chairman of the Rivercrest Beautification Committee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilmot E. Forbes on August 26, 1973. Her survivors include her son, Lance E. Forbes, Dean P. Forbes and Wade K. Forbes; 8 grandchildren; and two nephews, Larry Sullivan and The Honorable Tom Sullivan. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, December 21, 1998, in the Chapel of Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home, 12800 Westheimer Road at Dairy Ashford, with the Rev. Rosa was born in Hemphill, Texas in 1931 to Dewey and Eva Buckley (both deceased). She graduated from Pineland High School in 1947 and hit the road to the big city of Houston where she began her career at Southwestern Bell. She immediately joined the Communication Workers of America, which would set the stage for the rest of her life's work. She soon became a full-time union organizer and then went to work for the Harris County AFL-CIO and eventually, the Texas AFL-CIO in Austin in 1965. Rosa was a force to be reckoned with in life, and in the labor movement. She fought tirelessly for equal rights and fair pay for all working people. She was caring, compassionate and a bulldog with a passion when it came to fighting for working class people. Rosa was a leading figure in the labor movement in the 50's and early 60's when it was predominately a 'man's world'. She stood and fought arm in arm with workers in hard fought and often dangerous fights to organize unions and win fair pay and safe working conditions. Rosa's many accomplishments included: induction into both the Texas AFL CIO Labor Hall of Fame and the Texas Women's Hall of Fame; founding member of the National Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW); Vice President of Texas Coalition of Labor Union Women; long time elected member of the Democratic National Committee; member of the Texas Judicial Conduct Commission; founder of the Texas Consumer Association; member of the Red Cross Midwestern Advisory Board; and recognitions by resolution of the Texas House of Representatives, Texas Senate and the Congress of the United States. She was also a key force behind the Texas Democratic Women, and was a lifelong member of the Capitol Area Democratic Women. Rosa also served people, especially union members, in need across the state. She coordinated disaster relief operations with the Red Cross in hurricanes, tornados, floods, and plane crashes and worked on site tirelessly until everyone was clothed, fed, had a place to stay and received some assistance to get back on their feet. Rosa went into disaster areas before power, phones and even windows in hotels were replaced, knowing workers needed help to get their families settled, get back to work, and replace valuable items such as medications. Rosa was a legendary figure in the Texas Labor movement and earned the respect of law makers, politicians, and the working people of Texas regardless of political affiliation. Rosa was a mentor to many men and women in the labor movement and elected officials at every level of government. She was particularly an inspiration and mentor to union women, and created pathways for women to lead across the state. Rosa routinely received calls for advice, and made calls to praise or admonish individuals as the situation dictated. (You did not want to be the subject of the latter). Rosa's advice was never sugar coated, but you knew it was given for the recipient's best interest or the best interest of the community or group. Rosa gave respect and earned respect of many as a result. Rosa believed every election was important - from school board to the President of the United States of America. She spearheaded voter registration drives, protest marches, peaceful civil disobedience and conducted training for activists and workers alike. Rosa Walker was frequently asked to be a speaker at functions, and always well received. In short, Rosa Walker was a pioneering labor leader and feminist, ahead of her time and leading the way. She made a difference for the better for all working people. Rosa is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Boyce Breedlove; sisters, Annie Nipper, Lucille Miller and Velma Westmoreland; and brother, T.J. Buckley. She is survived by her loving daughter and care taker of many years, Debbie Jennings of Austin; sister, Mary Townsend of Nacogdoches and many nieces and nephews who she loved. Her daughter would like to give a heartfelt thanks to Heart-to-Heart Hospice Care in Austin. They were all amazing and especially to her nurse Diana who was a rock to lean on in her final days. Due to the pandemic, there will be no services. A private graveside was held at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery. She was an avid quilter and gardener and had been a bookkeeper for the ST&H Oil Company in Ubly for over 52 years. She is survived by one son, Robert Elliott of Ubly; 2 grandchildren, Kristy Lynne and Kati Sue, also of Ubly, and one brother, Keith Buehrly of Livonia. Mrs. Elliott, who had been ill for three weeks in her home, was taken to the Pleasant Home Hospital Monday afternoon where she died Tuesday night. Mrs. Elliott was born March 7, 1886, near Cass City, the daughter of Mrs. Leonard BUEHRLY and the late Mr. BUEHRLY. On November 26, 1908, she married Mr. Burton ELLIOTT in Cass City. Miss KYTOOGA spent six weeks in 1981 with the Buehrlys as an exchange student. Obituary Dale E. Buehrly, 76, of Cass City died following a long illness Saturday, March 17, 2012 in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 26, 1935 at home in Cass City to Lawrence and Ethel (White) Buehrly. He married Louise May Sutherland December 19, 1959 in the United Methodist Church parsonage in Cass City. After graduating from high school Dale served in the U.S. Army. Dale worked as a Die Setter for Sebewaing Industries retiring in 1988 after 35 years. During that time he was also a crop and cattle farmer, tending four farms. Dale and Louise enjoyed traveling. They visited every state except four and visited 14 different countries. They were host parents for an exchange student from Finland in 1981 and were happy to visit her home and travel with her throughout Europe and still consider her their daughter. Dale was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, the church his grandfather started by hiring a German minister. Dale had a deep Christian faith and attended church regularly and served on many committees over the years. He was a member of the Caro American Legion Post #7, Octagon Barn Committee, Old Engine Hit and Miss Club, Cass City Layman's Club and was an active supporter of Bay Shore Camp. Dale loved the woods. After Sunday dinner they would take a four wheeler ride into the woods. Chopping wood was one of his favorite things to do. He enjoyed woodworking projects including building a playhouse for his granddaughter and a greenhouse that he and Louise enjoyed many meals in. Dale and Louise enjoyed camping. Dale is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Louise; children: Larry (Tamara) Buehrly of Cass City, Christine (Ken) Harris of Annapolis, MD; grandchildren: Nathan Buehrly, Scott (Stacey) Buehrly, Lauren Harris, Kenny Harris, Brooke Robinson, Becca (Josh) Adams, Alex Robinson; great grandchildren: Braden and Tayler; brother, Don Buehrly of Cass City; special friends and neighbors: Dale and Lugene Peters of Cass City. He is preceded in death by his sister, Esther Buehrly and his parents, Lawrence and Ethel Buehrly. Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2012 in Cass City United Methodist Church with Rev. Jackie Roe officiating. Interment is in Elkland Township Cemetery. He was born Sept 6, 1895, on the family Centennial farm in Elkland Township where he lived all his life. He was the son of Leonard and Catherine (Burke) Buehrly. He was married Janet Gardner on May 7, 1919, in Cass City. Mrs. Buehrly died Dec. 30, 1968. Mr. Buehrly was one of the oldest members of Salem United Methodist Church of Cass City and one of the few remaining World War I veterans, having served with the United States Army Infantry. He was also a member of American Legion of Cass City. He is survived by one son and his wife, Carl Buehrly, and his wife Carolyn of Lansing, three grandchildren; Robert Buehrly of Traunik, Mrs. Michael (Colleen) Portale of Marquette and Miss Mary Lynn Buehrly of Lansing; and three great-grandchildren, Bridgette, Tiffany and Bethany. Two brothers, Fred and Lawrence Buehrly; and three sisters, Bertha Elliott, Mary Striffler and Elsie Anthes preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Saturday at Salem United Methodist Church of Cass City with the Rev Clare Patton, pastor, officiating. At the time he completed this registration, he was a farmer in Elkland Towship, of medium heighth and build, with blue eyes and brown hair. Volume 23 of the Striffler-Benkelman Broadcast, dated September 7, 1963, noted that Mr. and Mrs. Fred Buehrly enjoyed a trip to the Upper Peninsula with their grandson, Rob Elliott, and his parents in celebration of his graduation. They spent a week at the Buehrly and Elliott trailers near Wolverine, Michigan. Cass City Chronicle Thursday, August 26, 1971 Page 14 Fred Buehrly dies at grass fire A minor grass fire at 7183 Reed Road resulted in the unexpected death of Fred Buehrly, 82, when too much excitement apparently resulted in a heart attack Tuesday, August 24. Firemen from Cass City arrived at the Buehrly home to find neighbors, a rural mail carrier, and Buehrly's wife, Mary, fighting the grass fire. It had started when some burning willow branches spread out of control. Elwyn HELWIG, fireman, said he asked Mrs. Buehrly where her husband was. She found hime lying in the kitchen by the back door. Helwig, a former Army Medic, felt for a pulse, but said he could find nothing. He then radioed for an ambulance. Buehrly was pronounced dead on arrival at Hills and Dales General Hospital. A lifelong Cass City resident, he was born March 9, (sic) 1889 to Leonard and Catherine Burke Buehrly. He married the former Mary Mark September 22, 1915, and was a lifelong member of Salem United Methodist Church. He is survived by his widow, a daughter, Mrs. Leonard (Alice) ELLIOTT of Ubly; a son, Keith, of Livonia and four grandchildren. Also, two brothers, Edward and Lawrence and a sister, Mrs. Elsie ANTHES, all of Cass City. Two sisters preceded him in death. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, August 27, from the Salem United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ira Wood officiating. The body will lie in state at thet church beginning at noon. His mother later remarried, and life with his new stepfather was unpleasant. At age 14, using a small inheritance from an aunt to pay his passage, Leonard emigrated to America. He landed at Ellis Island with 25 cents in his pocket, and went to first live with his Uncle John Schiefle near Buffalo, New York. He worked for others on farms, and also attended school, but became very homesick for Germany. He was persuaded to visit his Aunt, Catherine Benkelman nee Schiefle in Cass City before returning to Germany, and did so. His Aunt made a home for him, and he again worked for neighboring farmers, helping to clear the land on which part of Cass City is located. Leonard was happy to find the Buerk family living in Cass City, as they were well acquainted in Germany. He visited them often, and in 1885 married their only child, Catherine. The young family started out with one cow, a one room home, and a log stable. Leonard often left home at daybreak, working all day for 50 cents, and returning home after dark. Since they didn't even have a fence, he then had to light a lantern and go in search of their cow in order to milk her. Leonard was active in his church, on both the building committee and superintendent of the Sunday School. In 1900, the Buehrly family moved into the Buerk home and took care of Catherine's aging parents. They remained in the family home after her parents died." Buehrly Was Elkland Pioneer Came From New York and Continued Residence Here Since 1876 Leonard Buehrly, for 62 years a resident of Elkland Township, passed away at his farm home three miles northeast of Cass City, late Friday afternoon, after an illness of nearly a year's duration. Funeral services were conducted at the Evangelical Church on Tuesday afternoon by Dr. R.N. Holsaple. Burial was in Elkland Cemetery. Leonard Buehrly was born in Borthinger, Wuertemberg, Germany, on February 21, 1859, and at the age of 14, he crossed the Atlantic Ocean all alone as far as his friends and relatives were concerned. He landed in Buffalo, N.Y. with exactly 25 cents in his pocket. An uncle lived at Buffalo and after a short stay in his home, Mr. Buehrly found employment on a farm. At Christmas time in 1876, he came to Cass City where he entered the employ of Adam Benkelman on a farm two miles northeast of the village. On March 24, 1885, he was united in marriage with Miss Catherine Buerk. The early married years of Mr. and Mrs. Buehrly in Section 23, Elkland, presented the hardships of Pioneer days in this community which they met with a courageous spirit and with unfailing industry. The have resided on the same farm since their marriage nearly 54 years ago. In 1935, they celebrated their golden wedding at their farm home on the afternoon of March 24, surrounded by a large company of relatives, and the next evening, they were honored at a public reception at the Evangelical Church attended by a large group of relatives and friends. During his residence here, Mr. Buehrly had been a member of the Evangelical Church, serving that society as a member of the board of trustees for 25 years, as Sunday School superintendent for three years, and as calls leader and steward. Mr. Buehrly was a member of the building committee in charge of the erection of the first Evangelical Church edifice her in 1884.In this age of endevouring to shift burdens on other shoulders, it is rather unusual to find one anxious to assume more than his allotted shares of the day's burdens. However, there are such rare people, and such a man was Leonard Buehrly, who early in life, was taught that every industrious many, in every lawful calling, is a useful man. Coupled with an industrious spirit was honesty and frugalilty, all of which combined in making Mr. Buehrly a useful citizen. Mrs. Buehrly is survived by his widow and six children, Fred, Edward and Lawrence BUEHRLY, Mrs. Burt A. ELLIOT, Mrs. S.C. STRIFFLER, and Miss Elsie BUEHRLY. All are residents of Elkland Township. Born Jun 19, 1886 in Cass City, she was the former Mary BUEHRLY, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Leonard BUEHRLY. She married Solomon Striffler June 29, 1910 in Cass City. The Rev. R.E. Beits and the Rev. S.R. Wurtz were to officiate at the services. Besides her husband, survivors are two sons, Delbert Striffler of Caro and the Rev. Russell STRIFFLER of Des Moines, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Walter Anthes of Cass City, and three brothers, Edward BUEHRLY, Fred BUEHRLY, and Lawrence BUEHRLY, all of Cass City, and four grandchildren. She had been in ill health for the past two years. The Rev. S.R. Wurtz and Rev. Stanley Kirn officiated. Mrs. Buehrly was born in Waldhausen, Wurttemberg, Germany, August 16, 1865, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frederick BUERK and came to this country with her parents when she was seven years old. The settled on a farm three and one-half miles northeast of Cass City. On March 24, 1885, she married Mr. Leonard BUEHRLY at her home in Elkland Township. Following their marriage, they made their home on a farm near the homestead. Mr. Buehrly died February 4, 1939, and in 1945 Mrs. Buehrly came to live with her daughter, Mrs. ANTHES, where she had lived until her death. Mrs. Buehrly had been a faithful member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church of Cass City since early childhood and attended services when they were being held in the Walmsley School. She watched the church grow to the present time. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Walter (Elsie) ANTHES of Novesta Township and Mrs. S.C. (Mary) STRIFFLER of Elkland Township; three sons, Fred, Edward and Lawrence, all of Elkland Township; then grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. One daughter preceded her in death. He made the wooden trunks bound by iron straps to carry the families possesions during their journey to America. He bought land from John Striffler to establish a farm. The Buerk's lost their possessions in the fire of 1881. Fred had just erected a new grainery and completed thrashing, leaving a large straw stack when the fire swept through in September. It ignited Fred's straw stack and burned the barns and house. The family survived by lying face down in a sugar cane patch, which kept them from suffocating from the smoke of the sorgum field, which was still green. They were forever grateful to Reverend Fred Klump, who carried a dish of water to wet his eyes as he walked through the woods until he found them still alive. Those families who were spared the tragedy of "burning out" formed a relief agency from which the Buerk's and others received hay, lumber, furniture and other supplies. Starting over again, the family picked blackberries in the woods which Catherine carried in a basket on her head to town and traded. The next summer the buildings were rebuilt and the family carried-on. The family rebuilt one half mile south of the original buildings on what is now the Lawrence Buehrly farm. Mr. Buerk was thrown from the buggy and dragged some distance in the water. Fortunately neither Mr. or Mrs. Buerk sustained any serious injuries and aside from a few broken eggs no damage was done. Pioneer Fred Buerk Laid to Rest Tuesday, March 30 Elkland township loses another pioneer in the death of Fred Buerk who passed away Saturday night, March 27, following an illness of several years duration. Fred Buerk was born in Walthausen, Wuertemberg, Germany, Sept. 16, 1840. In 1867 he was married to Catherine Benkelman. Two children were born to this union, one dying in infancy. In 1873 he and his family came to America, locating at Cass City where he endured the hardships of pioneer life, clearing the farm on which he lived and where he passed away. He was converted to God in 1874 under the labors of Rev. Berge. He continued a faithful member of the Evangelical Church and held many important offices of the society. Besides his wife, he leaves one daughter, Mrs. Leonard Buehrly, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon. Rev. J. A. Schweitzer of Bay City, a former pastor of the deceased, preached a short funeral service in German at the residence and Rev. D.J. Barbara was born in Angleton, Texas, on March 20, 1947, and was the daughter of Reid Buis and Aleen Whittaker Buis of Angleton, Texas. She held a Bachelor of Arts degrees in English Literature from The University of Texas at Austin. Barbara married Ernest Jackson Boyett, Jr. on December 18, 1971. "Her one wish was that neither one would go first and either one would have to live without the other one," said Max Smith, an elder at Dayspring Fellowship. Burial was in the Junction City Cemetery, Junction, Texas, on Tuesday, December 6, 2011. |

| 3488 | I16895 | Bulin | Vaclav "James" | Nov 1842 | Aft 1900 | 0 | Vaclav and Marie Kosa Bulin circa 1868, settling first with relatives in Yuba, Wisconsin. Vaclav was a builder and cabinent maker. While in Wisconsin, they had twin boys and a baby girl. They moved to Glengary Township in the winter of 1878. There they came to live with Jan Kotas, Marie Bulin's uncle who lived in a sod hut near Milligan. Vaclav built the church on the north cemetery, for which Jan Kotas donated the lumber. Vaclav bought 160 acres, SE 1/4 Section 13 Glengary Township, Railroad Land, near Milligan. In the spring of 1888, the blizzard year, the five children of Vaclav and Marie Bulin took sick with diptheria. Three children died within a week, Mary age nine and the twin boys, Frank and Joe, age seven. It is said that a lady from Strang heard of the disease and came in her buggy, and treated the children "with a powder." The children stopped dying and the two who survived were W. J. and Albert Bulin. (Milligan, pp 214 - 215) The 1900 census indicates they also had a son John, born ca Dec 1879 who was still living in their home. Additionally, Mary was shown as the mother of 6 children in total, three still living. |

He raised peacocks and had the first pheasants by ordering eggs from Pennsylvania and hatching them. He also had the first alfalfa grown in the area.
