Before marriage she did office work and later helped her husband with farming around Milligan and Crete. In 1946 a daughter, Karen Ann was born. In 1956 they moved to Crete. Evelyn worked at Formfit Rogers for 27 years. She and Rudy enjoyed camping with their RV, trips to casino and polka dances. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in Feb. 1994 and a month later, Rudy died from diabetes and a heart problem. She was a member of American Legion Aux-unit 147; Disabled American Veterans Aux #7 and ZCBJ Lodge #3 all of Crete. She enjoyed gardening, playing bingo, volunteering at Auxiliary, baking kolaces and rosettes. She loved reading newspapers and listening to Czech music she was proud of her Czech heritage and loved talking with people. She liked watching TV game shows. Evelyn enjoyed visits from her grandchildren and great grandchildren from Missouri. June 2019, she went to live at The Gardens in Crete. She is survived by daughter, Karen (David) Cawley, Grandview, MO., Granddaughter, Lea (Joe) Vlasak, Lee Summit, MO., Grandson, Douglas (Sherri) Cawley, Columbia, MO. Svec was born to Emil Svec and Helen Marie (Fujan) Svec on October 7, 1924 at Milligan, Nebraska and passed away on June 23, 2013 at the age of 88. He attended Climbing Vine District #44 for eight years and graduated from Milligan High School in 1942. Bernard answered his draft call in May 1943, serving active duty in the United States Navy. He served overseas in the Pacific Theater, Guam and Peleliu. He was honorably discharged in May 1946 at Saint Louis, Missouri. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in Arizona, Florida, Kansas and Newfoundland. After his Air Force duty, Bernard worked for Bors/Bulin in Milligan, Ahlschwede Ford in Crete and Bob Hammond in Friend as a mechanic on cars and trucks. He married Irene Capek on October 10, 1963. Bernard was a member of the American Legion Post #240 in Milligan and the V.F.W. Post #7102 in Geneva. His favorite hobbies were hunting, fishing and gardening. Survivors include: Brother, Lumir Svec; Sister, Ruby (Mrs. Robert) Langhorst; Sister-In-Law, Louise Capek; nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by: Wife, Irene I. Les married Cheri Fitzgibbon on May 9, 1964 at a ceremony in Tobias. Together, they had two children: Kyle and Kevin. Les passed away at Heritage Crossings in Geneva on Sunday April 23, 2023 at the age of 89. Les grew up on the family farm west of Milligan and attended District 44 for his elementary years, and then Milligan High School, graduating with the class of 1951. After graduation, Les attended the Lincoln School of Commerce for one year and then began a career as the bookkeeper for the Farmer's Co-op in Milligan. He worked for the Milligan Co-op and eventually Farmers Cooperative for 53 years, finally retiring fully in 2009 at the age of 75. The only exception to his continual work at the Co-op was when he took time off to serve in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958, spending one year in Korea. After retirement, Les spent most his time following the activities of his grandchildren and helping on the family farm, particularly driving truck during harvest and keeping an eye on pivots during the summer. Les was preceded in death by his parents Louis J. and Rose Svec; in-laws Adolph and Evelyn Dlouhy; brothers Lloyd Svec and Louis Dale Svec; brother-in-law Larry Fitzgibbon and nephews Dave Fitzgibbon and Eric Fitzgibbon. Les is survived by his wife of 59 years, Cheri Svec; sons Kyle (Rebecca) and their children Kole and Tucker of Milligan; and Kevin (Angie) and their children Grant and Cassidy of Gretna; brother-in-law Gary Fitzgibbon of Milligan and sister-in-law Alice (Kip) Fitzgibbon of Scottsbluff. He was born on September 11, 1928 on a farm outside Milligan NE to Emil and Helen Fujan Svec. He was the middle of five children. Lum is preceded in death by his parents, wife Marian, sister Betty as a child, brothers Bernard and Jim, nieces Jan and Kelly Ahlschwede, special niece Carolyn Schmalken, and Bud (Buddy) the cat. He is survived by his daughter Donna of Minneapolis MN; son Gary of Aurora CO; grandchildren Guy (Jenn), Kira (Dustin) and Kalee of CO; great-grandchildren Troy, William and Alayna; sister Ruby Langhorst of David City; nieces and nephews, and numerous friends and acquaintances. Lum graduated from Milligan High School in 1945, and at the age of 16 began working at the Crete Mills. He married Marian Cudly, also of Milligan, on August 9, 1949 and they celebrated 53 years of marriage before her passing. Lumir retired from the Crete Mills after 46 years and spent his retirement years involved in two things that were his passion: attending sales/auctions and refinishing furniture. Lum couldn't resist a good deal and walked away from many auctions with boxes of unknown "treasures" that he had purchased for a quarter. He also had a good eye for furniture, which he would buy, repair if needed, then refinish and sell. At one time an antique dealer regularly came from Kansas to purchase furniture from him. Lum also refinished items for people in the area. He didn't do it as a business, but rather took as much work as he wanted to do, and told people to pay him what they thought it was worth. He said that he figured some people paid too little, some people paid the right amount and some people paid too much, so it all evened out in the end. He loved to joke, tease and laugh, and truly enjoyed other people's company. He enjoyed Czech music, and loved kolaches, particularly cottage cheese. For many years, he got together on a daily basis with his coffee buddies, one of his favorite activities. He was a kind and caring man, and appreciated all the love and support he received from friends, acquaintances and family in his later years. He will be missed. Services will be on Tuesday (3-29-2016) at 10:30 a.m. at Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete. Visitation: Monday, 5 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. They lived all their married life on the farm which Vaclav homesteaded. The farm, still in the family, is one mile west of Milligan. Vaclav Svec was born October 16, 1841, to Josef and Barbora Kippova or Kibova Svec in Zichovice, okres Stasecky, Bohemia. When he was 12, his mother died so he had to make his way in the world while still a young boy. He took up the trade of a cabinent maker. He came to America in 1869, following his trade of carpenter and farmer for a time in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Vaclav came to Nebraska two years later...filing the homestead entry at the Beatrice Land Office on April 17, 1871. Kathy was born in West Columbia, TX, to Edward Porter and Carrie Davis Sweeny and has lived in Pineland, TX, most of her life. She was a member of the Strickland Crossing Church of God and a loving Nana. She loved working with the Girl Scouts and Dixie Youth Baseball. Kathy is survived by her husband Gary Mike Smith of Diboll, her son Dallas Welch and his wife Kay of Pineland, her daughters Bridget Dew and her husband Jason and Carrie Harley and her husband Josh both of Pineland, her step-son Billy Jack Smith and his wife Ashley of Diboll and her step-daughter Chasity Archer and her husband Ricky of Diboll. She is also survived by a sister-in-law Bette Sweeny of Alvin, TX, a niece Jodi Sweeny of Alvin and nephew Coby Sweeny and his wife Cindy of Danberry, TX. Kathy's grandchildren were the joy of her life, Dakota, Madison, Collin, Cody, Daren, Caden and Cadee. Visitation will be from 6:00PM until 9:00PM, Friday, May 25, 2011, in the Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, TX. Funeral services will be at 2:00PM, Saturday, May 26, 2010, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Pineland Cemetery, Pineland, Texas. Pallbearers for Kathy will be: Dakota Dew, Collin Dew, Daren Dew, Cody Welch, Coby Sweeny, Tyler Scott Sweeny, Ronny Comeaux, and Scott Hardy. Aert Pietersen Tack was recruited to settle in New Amsterdam by Adrien van der Donck. Prospective settlers for those Dutch colonies, or servants for those already established in New Netherlands, were hired or recruited in the mother country, generally in the area from which the colonial leader came -- in this case van der Donck from North Brabant. Van der Donck at that time was seeking farmers for his Yonkers colony in the neighborhood of Breda, his birthplace. Among several he recruited were Aert Pieters Tack and Jacob Jansz/Jansen from nearby Etten, according to papers dated May 15, 1652. The two were contracted for six years. Such contracts ranged from two to six years. Passage money in these cases was usually paid by the employer. In New Netherlands, bed and board were furnished in addition to wages, which for farmhands ranged from 100 to 150 guilders a year, depending on age and experience. After his marriage, Aert was beset with money problems, and soon deserted his young family. The nature of a number of difficulties involving Aert Pietersen Tack emerges through a sequence of court cases beginning in 1662. There were several problems with employees over wages, and that November (1662) he mortgaged the grain crop to be harvested the following year. Tack apparently left before the fall of 1663, either as the result of the Indian raid or under cover of it. His wife harvested the grain and was enjoined by creditors from using the harvest (except that which the court ordered her paid for her work in harvesting). In May 1664, further evidence of Tack's indebtedness, in this case, for cattle appeared. In July, the court took steps to condemn Tack's property for his absenting himself, and to sell it to satisfy a list of creditors. The inventory included the following: A farm containing 20 morgens* of arable land wherein there have been sown 11 schopels of winter wheat....a dwelling and lot at Wiltwyck, two mares and a young mare one winter old, a cow and a heifer two years old, a plow and its belongings, a wagon, a sleigh, a truncle cart, two harrows...one with wooden and the other with iron teeth, a fathom of rope....a rein with two bridle bits, a winnow, two hayforks, an old forest axe, a chest with old things (these Anneke Adriens appropriates for her own use), a pair of tongs and a dinner dish, a pothook, a blanket, an old bed (these three things Anneke Adriens appropriates), a water pail, a kettle, two wooden troughs, a strainer, a stoof [for warming feet over live coals], an earthen pot, a kettle filled with tar, a half barrel, a table without feet, 27 or 28 fir wood plates, a churn without bottom, some old tubs, some dreps lying in the loft, some oats worth 18 or 19 schepels, 1 or 1 1/2 schepels of peas, a bench and a chair, two lengths of old edges. Thus made in Wiltwyck this May 12, 1664. (Stowell, p 125). According to Ernest Thode's German English Genealogical Dictionary, a Morgen is defined as, theoretically, the amount of land that one man and an ox can plow in one morning. In October of 1664, Jacob Jansen (Van Etten), a farmhand of Tack (who later married Tack's ex-wife, Annetje Ariaens), sued for wages due him. The following month, Jacob himself was sued to collect a debt of wheat which he admitted but explained that he couldn't pay due to being sick with fever. He was granted time until the Tack estate was settled, when he presumably could collect wages due him. In January 1665, Annetje Ariaens requested relief from her debts because her effects had been sold "on behalf of creditors of her absconded husband". That same month, Jacob again requested the court that he be paid his wages from the estate in the amount of "388 guilders heavy money in wheat". He was told he could be paid after prior preference creditors were satisfied. Internet address: dkoenig@library.berkeley.edu In Volume 7, Number 2 of the April, May, June Edition 2002, front page, an article entitled "Aert Pieterszn Tack" by Frans Gouverneur of the Netherlands, tells many of us, myself included, about the family, parents and grandparents of our Aert Pieterszn Tack, father of Grietje Tack who married our First Born American Luur Jacobszn Van Kuykendall from whom all bloodline Kuykendalls, by any spelling, descend. Mr. Gouverneur has translated much of what he found in the Holland records into English for our benefit for which I am grateful. I have great difficult in reading or interpreting the Dutch writings. His article includes sources which are very important. One thing which I noticed in particular was his "spelling" of our given name, "Luur Jacobszn van KUIJKENDAEL." I think this is the first time that I have seen it spelled that way. However, in all of the writings that I have seen, the name is obviously outstanding and noticeable with any spelling. Even when it is found as "Kuy Kendall" two words, sometimes without the KUY. Careful research is important in that case. |

She was married to James Thomas Freeman from 1958 to 1989, Stephen Frank Hefner from 1990 to 2004 when he passed away and Robert Glenn Warriner since March 15, 2008. Hilda was a member of Crossbranch Bible Fellowship in Glen Rose, Volks Kruzers Club in Granbury and Legends Street Rod and Customs Club of Wichita, Kan. She enjoyed ceramics, china painting, photography, travel, reading, cooking and motorcycle riding. She had lived in Granbury since 1990. Survivors: Husband, Robert Glenn Warriner of Granbury; children, Cheryl Leigh Freeman Faulkner of Saginaw and James Thomas Freeman II of Arlington; grandchildren, Heather Leigh Faulkner, Tanner Scott Faulkner, Christopher James Freeman and Devin Abbett Freeman; stepchildren, Gregory Alan Warriner and Allison Hefner; sisters, Glenda Todd and Sharon Evans-Bost; great aunts, Jean Tanner Crocker of Mississippi and Carole Beth Tanner Wood of Arkansas; great uncle, Aubrey Lee Tanner of Mississippi. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. E.M. Gibson at 1:30 p.m. today (Friday) in the home. Interment will be in Elkland Cemetery. Laura A. Tanner was born in Ontario, November 26, 1868, and came to Tuscola County in 1875. She was united in marriage with John Mark on December 15, 1897, and they made their home on a farm northwest of town until September three years ago, when they bought and moved to the residence where she passed away. Mrs. Mark had been poorly for a long time and has been confined to her bed for the last seven weeks. She has been a member of the Methodist Church for many years, combining the qualities of a good neighbor with those of a faithful follower of God. She was a person of kindly disposition, broad minded, patient and a friend to everyone? a friend, whom it was a genuine pleasure to meet. Besides her husband she is survived by four brothers, Aaron Tanner, Grayburn, Sask.; George Tanner, Gold Hill, Oregon; Elijah, Seagrave, Ontario, and Daniel, of Detroit. Tatom was a barber and operated Tatom's Barber Shop, Hemphill.
