Smith of Pineland; one son, Kenneth L. Smith of Pineland; three daughters, Helen Jagneaus of Sulphur, Louisiana, Vessie Lee Ferrell of Houston, and Janise Lynne Mobsy of Pineland; two brothers, Reece F. Smith of Milam and Rev. Aldous Smith of Nacogdoches; two sisters, Zelma Blessingame of Garland and Myrtis Short of Pineland; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. Aldous Smith and Bro. J. Milton Poindexter officiating. Smith Jr. of Hillster, and she is survived by a sister, Florence McBride of Hemphill. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. W. His obituary, copied from FindAGrave, is below: Charlie Albert Smith Jr. was born on January 18, 1922 to Willie Mae (McDonald) Smith and Charlie Albert Smith Sr. in Woodville, Tyler Co., Texas. He was raised in Woodville and graduated from Kirby High School in 1939. He worked for Wood Fain Enterprises from the time he was about 12 years old. He enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps in January, 1942 just a few short days before his 20th birthday. He spent three years overseas in the European Theater of Operation (322 Bombardment Group; 451st Squadron). The war ended in 1945 and he rotated back to the USA in October, 1945. By that time his family had moved to Houston. The first part of November 1945, he went to Newton, Texas to visit with some of the Fain Family. Minnie Pearl (Fain) Townsend introduced him to Bonnie Lou Jones. A true love story (chosen by God) began. Charlie and Bonnie were married on Jan. 12, 1946. They have been married 66 and 1/2 years. Charlie retired from the Business System Division of Eastman Kodak Co. after 34 years of service. Charlie and Bonnie raised two wonderful sons in San Antonio, Texas. Charlie and Bonnie retired to Newton and built a retirement home on April 1, 1943. They became members of First Baptist Church (not the same church as now) where they both served the Lord. Charlie was ordained a deacon in the church and subsequently became both Chairman of the Deacons and taught the oldest men's Sunday School Class for over 20 years. Charlie was a unique husband and daddy. His constant thoughts were the welfare of his family. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, sons: Charlie Albert Smith III and wife, Frieda of Kerrville, TX and Stanley Kurt Smith and wife, Kathy of Waxahachie, TX, grandsons, Travis and Cameron Smith of Canyon Lake, Tx, granddaughters, Tina Hess (Buzzy's daughter) of Fairview, Ok and Brandy Helm (Stanley's daughter) of Red Oak, Tx., siblings: Garland Smith and wife, Linda of Sacremento, Ca: sisters: Brenda Brignac and husband Winston of Gonzales, La.; Linda Everett of Humble, Tx; sister-in-law, Helen Smith of Humble, TX. and numerous nieces and newphews. Smith, veteran Sabine County physician, celebrated his 91st birthday at his home in Hemphill Sunday, March 25, 1962 with members of his family, other relatives and friends. "Dr. Frank," as he is affectionately known, was born on March 25, 1871 at Fairmount, Sabine County, the son of Dr. John Wesley Smith and Caroline Smith (first cousins). Dr. John Wesley Smith had practiced medicine for 52 years prior to his death at the age of 79 in 1923. Dr. Frank practiced medicine for 60 years before his retirement about three years ago. He began his practice in the Fairdale community in 1899, later establishing offices above Hemphill Drug Company in Hemphill. In the past years, Dr. Frank hasn't been as active as in previous years and folks "around the square" in Hemphill have missed his warm smile and friendly greeting. However, he was able to attend the recent meeting of Littleton Fowler Masonic Lodge. Recalling his early days as a practicing doctor in an interview last year, Dr. Frank said, "The first 17 years of my practice of medicine was during the horse and buggy days, only mine was mostly "horseback." I have saddled my horse many times in all kinds of weather, put on slickers and overcoats in rainy and cold weather, stretched an umbrella, put my lantern on the bend of my elbow, sometimes not returning for a day or more. I recall one time my horse got scared of the stretched umbrella, threw me and medicine in every direction, but usually I managed to keep gentle horses." "One time I was called across the Sabine River in Louisiana in a somewhat rowdy vicinity. The ferry was bad and the river was high so I was forced to spend the night. When I went to bed, I slipped my pocketbook under my pillow, thinking it would be safer there. The next morning when I was about a mile away on my way back home, heard someone behind me calling. The man was bringing me my purse, which I had forgotten and left under the pillow." Dr. Frank says the Model T was warmly welcomed by the doctors and helped to ease their heavy load, even though the times were many when a team of good horses or mules were necessary to pull you and the Model T and later Model A's from the mud holes or deep sand. It was still years before modern highways were constructed. In February 1896, Dr. Smith was married to Eva Clementine McDaniel, who is now deceased. She was the daughter William (Bill) Watson and Zerowine Joan Smith McDaniel. The McDaniel family came to Texas in 1850 from Spartenburg, South Carolina after stopping for awhile in Itawomba County, Mississippi. There were five children born to this marriage, four of whom are still living. Dr. and Mrs. Smith also raised a foster son, Jack McDaniel of Port Arthur. The children are Mrs. Bertha Peveto of Beaumont, Mrs. Edna (Ted) Barbee of Crockett, Mrs. Sadye Nelsen of Kirbyville, and Robert Earl Smith of Hemphill. |

Tuttle Dorothy Ruth Tuttle was born on January 5, 1925 to Edward and Anna (Capek) Smith on the farm near Milligan, Nebraska. She attended country school District 96 and graduated from Milligan High School in 1942. Dorothy was united in marriage to Carl Tuttle on October 3, 1942 in Papillion, NE. They lived in Lincoln for a short time before returning to the Friend area where they crop and dairy farmed for over 40 years. For many years she taught Sunday School at Friend Gospel Tabernacle as well as being active in the Ladies' Missionary Circle. In 1982 they moved into Friend. Dorothy worked at Warren Memorial Hospital in the laundry, housekeeping, and activities departments for the next 20 years. She was also a member of the Warren Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. After retiring, she occasionally worked at the Lauber-Moore Funeral Home. Until the time of her death, she was actively involved at the Friend Manor by volunteering with mail, Bingo, and church on Sunday afternoons. Dorothy had a passion for Alzheimer's awareness, which she honored by decorating a Christmas tree in purple every year. As a woman who cared about family, she took pride in chronicling the family genealogy through past pictures, letters, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, and reunions. She diligently cared for her ever-growing flowerbeds and took great pleasure in hearing that others admired them as well. Ultimately, she will be remembered for her strong faith, steadfast prayer, and her love for the Lord and her family. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Anna; her husband, Carl; sisters and spouses Helen (George) Mika and Clara (Clarence) Vanek; brother and spouse Edward (Helen) Smith; brothers-in-law Elmer Eigsti, Walt Lee, Vestal Boswell, Larry Shacklett, and Swede Mortensen Harold Engel; sisters-in-law Edith Tuttle, Neva Eigsti, Wilmetta Engel, and Geraldine Tuttle. Smelling something, she opened the door, and the flames burst out, striking her so as to burn all the upper portion of her dress entirely off. Her arms, hands, face and hair also suffered severely. He was also an ordained minister serving area churches for 31 years, including a tenure at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church located not far from Fairmount Cemetery." SABINE COUNTY REPORTER January 18, 2006 All Things Historical by Bob Bowman Edward Smith deserves his own place in history. Born in Vernon Parish, LA, in 1845 he moved to Newton County, Texas with his parents as a small boy. When he reached 18, he enlisted in the Confederate Army to fight in the Civil War. When federal naval forces approached the Texas coast, Smith and others in his company pushed through the East Texas swamps to reinforce Lieutenant Dick Dowling and his Texas forces at Sabine Pass. With only 40 men, they helped beat back an invasion by federal troops. The battle, the only one ever fought on East Texas soil, saw Smith, Dowling and fellow soldiers outnumbered 100 to one. Despite overwhelming odds, the Texans had no deaths or injuries while the federal force of 27 ships had about 400 mend injured, captured or killed. The Texans were so fierce that the battle lasted only 45 minutes. Following the end of the Civil War, Edward Smith came home to Fairmount, served as its postmaster for 25 years, and became a Baptist preacher. He and his wife and many of their 13 children are buried in the Fairmount cemetery. So are his parents and his wife's mother. His descendants have another story of his bravery. Edward and his dogs were cornered by a bear in the woods near his home. Edward scrambled up a tree and when the bear started climbing after him, Edward whipped otu his pocketknife and slashed the bear's head and paws, while to dogs nipped at the bear's heels. After the dogs started to chase the bear, Edward was able to climb down and run home. |

Sanford, and they had one child: Edwin P. Smith (b. 1855). Achsa died in 1857. Edwin served as a bugler for Company B, 8th New York Cavalry, from Oct. 1861 until Apr. 1862. After the war he moved to Michigan, settling eventually in Kalamazoo, where he worked as a butcher. He died in 1904 at the age of 88. |

Funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the First Baptist church, with the Rev. T. P. Haskins officiating. Mrs. Sanders leaves three daughters, Ethel, Clara May and Mrs. George Thompson, and one son, Robert, in addition to her husband, who is an employe of the city. Mrs. S. E. Dick, of Duncan, her mother, also survives. She married Perry Sanders in 1900 in Texas and the couple have made their home in Duncan for the last 20 years. She was born at Chulifena Center, Ala. in 1880. Mrs. J. M. Peters of Chickasha and Mrs. L. Barnett of Duncan are Roy Dick and Lee Dick of Duncan are half brothers. The wife of Lieutenant Samuel Smith of Wethersfield, Connecticut., has often been named erroneously as Elizabeth Chileab. The following article appeared in abbreviated form in "The Hartford Times, " 8 Jan 1956. About one year after their arrival from England, Lt. Samuel Smith's wife gave birth to a son,1 to whom they gave the unusual name of Chileab. Someone, possibly Stiles (he must at least be charged with responsibility for passing on the fiction in his "History of Ancient Wethersfield 2:646), assumed that this unusual name must have been the surname of the mother. It is unfortunate that Stiles failed to consult his Bible concordance. Had he done so, he would have learned that Lt. Smith, a devout man who made a bequest of a Bible in his will to each of his grandchildren gave biblical names to each one of his other sons, - Samuel, Philip and John, - and Chileab was no exception; the original Chileab was the son of King David by Abigail (II Samuel, 111;3). According to Rev. William Jenks, "Comprehensive Commentary on the Holy Bible" (1836), Chileab signifies "like his father, or the father's picture." Due to the unusual circumstances of Chileab"s birth, Abigail being the lawful wife of Nabal the Carmelite, we may reasonable ascribe the touching choice of the babe's name to Abigail rather than to David. In any event in the 7 Oct. 1929 issue of "The Boston Evening Transcript," one C.D.A. wrote, in answer to query 8072-15. If Lieutenant Smith had named the child Chedorlaomer, Jaazaniah, Yephibosneth, or Maher-shalal-hash-baz ( all biblical masculine names), there would have been as much ground for assuming the selected name was the family name of Elizabeth as there was that it was Chileab. The identity of Elizabeth, wife of Lt. Samuel Smith, has been determined within the bounds of probability acceptable to careful genealogists. As long ago as 14 Aug 1943, the late Dr. Ray G.Hulbert, in his answer to query A-2442-(6) in "The Hartford Times," gave the facts, which have been repeated on a number of occasions, once at least by the present contributor. Nevertheless, to bring all the known facts together, perhaps for the first time the following account is presented to lay the ghost of Elizabeth Chileab. The parish registers of St. Margarets's, Whatfield, Co.,Suffolk, England, show the Oct 6, 1624 marriage of Samuel Smyth to Elizabeth Smyth, and the baptism of their son Samuel on Feb 8, 1625 (1625/6?). The young couple next appear at Hadleigh, co. Suffolk, three miles south of Whatfield where, at the church of St. Mary the Virgin, they baptized Elizabeth on Jan 28, 1627 (probably New Style); Mary, Oct. 9, 1628 and Philip, November1632. The Smith, Smyth, Smithe (all interchangeable, of course) family embarked "the last of Aprill, 1634, for New England, in the "Elizabeth," from Ipswich, Mr. Wm. Andrews, "Master" (New England Hist. and Gen. Register, 14:329; Hotten' s "Original Lists," pp. 280, 282; Pope's "Pioneers of Massachusetts"; James William Hook , "Lieut. Samuel Smith (1953), p. 1.The ship's list shows the following ages for the members of the Smith family:"Samuell Smithe,"; 32; "Elizabeth his wife," 32; and children of "Sam. Smith:" Samuel, 9; Elizabeth, 7; Mary, 4; Philip, 1. The ages of the children Samuel, Elizabeth, and Philip exactly correspond with their respective dates of baptism. Mary, however, was 5, not 4. Actually, this record represents a high degree of accuracy. Most ages taken from ships' lists (and from gravestones and census records as well) are questionable unless confirmed by other contemporary records. There remains little room for doubt that the baptismal records shown above taken from the parish registers in Whatfield and Hadleigh, are of the children who sailed on the "Elizabeth" from Ipswich only ten miles east of Hadleigh, co. Born Dec. 21, 1914, in Fairdale as a son of the late W. E. and Minnie Mozel (McDaniel) Smith, he had formerly lived in Kirbyville before returning to Sabine County 20 years ago. Smith, a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, was a member of the VFW Post #1 0351 and the Church of God. He was retired from the maintenance department of Kirbyville Independent School District. Survivors: wife, Audie Ray Smith of Hemphill; two sosns, Ferrell Levi Smith Jr. of Huntsville and William Dewayne "Bill" Smith of Hemphill; two granddaughters, Wendy Duncombe of Galveston and Cindy Smith of Huntsville; a sister, Sybil Smith of Hemphill; and a brother, Will Smith of Hemphill. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. Vance Purtell officiating.
