This brick was on the top of the stack when the Garden Club received the shipment this past week. This particular brick is in honor of Lurette Mitchell, an elementary teacher for over 40 years, most of those years spent in the San Augustine Schools. Mrs. Mitchell now resides at Twin Lakes Care Center. The May 10, 2007 issue of the San Augustine Tribune featured a photo of a Teacher's Reception held at the Twin Lakes Center. Lurette Mitchell was pictured, and it was noted that she taught for 47 years mostly 2nd grade, starting out in a one-room school in the Harmony Community, later teaching in San Augustine. The Sabine County Reporter December 2, 2009, Page 14 Emma Lurette Ramsey Mitchell Mrs. Emma Lurette Ramsey Mitchell, 98, of San Augustine, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009 in San Augustine. Mrs. Mitchell was born Jan. 30, 1911, in San Augustine County to Judge W. C. Ramsey and Emma Jenkins Ramsey. She was a teacher for the San Augustine Independent School District and a member of the Christ Church Episcopal, San Augustine. Mrs. Mitchell was preceded in death by her husband, L. B. "Rudy" Mitchell; son, Judge John W. Mitchell; brothers, William Thomas, Smith, Ben and George Ramsey; and sisters, Addie Laura Ramsey, Mary Belle Ramsey Ledford, and Letitia Ramsey Stine. Survivors: son, Charles Mitchell and wife Barbara; daughter-in-law, Lucy Mitchell; grandchildren, Sarah Jane "Janie" Mitchell, John Joseph "Jody" Mitchell and wife Sarah, and Emma Virginia "Ginny" Mitchell. Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 28, at Christ Episcopal Church in San Augustine with Rev. Dorothy Gremillion officiating. Burial was at San Augustine City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Church, Episcopal, P. O. Box 85, San Augustine, Texas 75972. Ramsey was born Oct. 8, 1914, in San Augustine County as a son of the late Judge William C. Ramsey and Emma Ramsey and served as a master sergeant in the U. S. Marine Corps during World War II. He was a retired postmaster with 24 years service. He served 17 years on San Augustine Independent School District's board of trustees and was a member of Worod of Life Church in Lufkin. Survivors: wife, Margaret Ramsey of San Augustine, two sons, Ben S. Ramsey of Houston and William C. Ramsey of San Augustine; two daughters, Susann Lohr of Hujble and Dorothy Shoemaker of Midland; two sisters, Lurette Mitchell of San Augustine and Letitia Stine of Henrietta; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, at the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine with Billy Jackson officiating. Interment followed at Liberty Hill Cemetery in San Augustine County. Arrangements were handled by Wyman Roberts Funeral Directors in San Augustine. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Christine (Duane) Hickey; and sisters, Helen Agar, Viola Roberts and Leona Harrington. A Memorial Service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Cass City United Methodist Church, Cass City, with Pastor Paul Donelson officiating. | 19728 | I16477 | Rarick | Galen Ronald | 28 Apr 1923 | 15 Jun 1994 | 0 | Memorial article about Galen Rarick: When Galen Rarick died last June 15 in Eugene, the university community and the field of journalism education lost more than a distinguished scholar and good friend. Professor Rarick was one of the true and few renaissance figures in a professional field known for its diversity. Galen was a bridge, bringing together people from different and often competing disciplines. He spoke the languages of art and technology, of business and philosophy. Better still, he was known to students and colleagues alike as a warm, caring person a man who put other people first. He also, fortunately, put the University of Oregon first. When he was recruited in 1962 to develop the School of Journalism's program in communication theory and research, the faculty recognized it was a coup to attract this Stanford Ph.D.with strong journalism credentials. He soon became one of the most respected journalism educators in the country. It was almost inevitable that Oregon would lose him to a larger university. In 1967, he went to Ohio State, where he cemented his reputation for significant research into newspaper policies and practices. But he was persuaded to return to Eugene as dean in 1976, where his skills guided the school successfully through an era of dwindling resources. Galen served as dean for five years, earning the trust and admiration of faculty for what one of his colleagues, Roy Paul Nelson, described as "uncommon patience and disarming determination." Another emeritus professor, Jack Ewan, called Galen "The Great Negotiator." Galen returned to the teaching faculty in 1981, completing 16 years with the school before retiring from full time teaching in 1987. He was born April 28, 1923 in Muncie, Indiana, into a devoted and close family that included five sisters and two brothers. After receiving a bachelor's degree from the University of Denver and a master's from Stanford, Galen embarked on a 10 year journalism career that included three years as the owner and publisher of a weekly newspaper in Mississippi and three years on the staff of the Congressional Quarterly in Washington. After returning to Stanford for doctoral studies, Galen taught at Hardin Simmons University and UC Berkeley before coming to University of Oregon. But the most significant and satisfying event in Galen's adult life was his marriage in 1952 to Betty Lou Johnson. They enjoyed a close and loving relationship until her death in 1992. Two sons, Jeff of Keizer, Oregon, and Ethan of Walnut Creek, California, survive them. Galen Rarick will be remembered for many qualities, but perhaps no more endearing than his well developed sense of irony, his mastery of the art of understatement and his good natured wit. Don Gilbert was born in Hemphill, Texas on July 25, 1939 to Frank and Velma Smith Rash. He was a United States Army Veteran having served in Germany and later he worked as a Civil Engineer in the construction field. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. Don Gilbert is survived by his wife of 41 years, Marcia Rash of Many, Louisiana; children, Gilbert Dean Rash and wife, Sherry, Kimberly Kay Blanchette and husband, Ronnie, Leslie Diane Sullivan and husband, Rick, Rory Lance Rash and wife, Michelle, and Lanona Chandler and husband, Cliff; 17 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and sister, Ginger Rash White. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Velma Rash; brother, Bobby Lynn Rash; and step-sons, Edgar Jerrell Savell and Roger Dale Savell. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Redland Lodge No. 3, AF&AM, the Shrine and was Golden K Kiwanian. He was born in San Augustine April 11, 1919, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Eugene B. Rawson. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Mitchell Rawson of Orange; brother, Frank Rawson of Orange; sisters Velta McLemore of San Augustine and Doris Mills of Pleasanton. Born on July 20, 1921, Frank was a native of Denning, Texas. He was the son of Veva Garrett Rawson and Eugene Bryan Rawson, Sr. After serving in the South Pacific during WWII, Mr. Rawson became an educator. He spent the majority of his career in the Little Cypress ? Mauriceville CISD, serving as a teacher, coach and principal. Before joining Little Cypress, Mr. Rawson worked for several years in the West Orange schools. After leaving Little Cypress, he served as a junior high school principal in Buna until his retirement. Following his retirement, he spent many years as a security guard at Delta Downs. Mr. Rawson was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend to many. Affectionately known as "Faw Frank" or "Uncle Frank", he will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Jane Pate Rawson; his parents; and his siblings, Velta Mclemore, Eugene B. Rawson, Jr., Doris Mills, Mary Wickersham, Garrett Rawson and Neal Rawson. Mr. Rawson is survived by his daughter, Fran Hulsey and husband, Larry of Hemphill; and son, Warren Rawson and wife, Patty DeLaney of Houston. Memories will be cherished by his five grandchildren, Oscar DeLaney Rawson of Houston, David Hulsey and wife, Tammy of Orange, Darrin Hulsey and partner, Hillary Herndon of Knoxville, Tennessee, Daniel Hulsey of Orange, Karen Hulsey Fisher and husband, Kyle of Mauriceville. "Faw Frank" will also be remembered by his great-grandchildren, Brynne Hulsey of Bridge City, Dayla and Taylor Hulsey of Orange, Seaman Trevor Lawrence Hulsey of Panama City, Florida; and Airman 1st Class Theron David Hulsey of Lakenheath, England. Iris Rawson Mathews was the wife of the late Woodrow W. Mathews. For many years Iris worked beside her husband Woodrow in the dry good business. J P Mathews Company, the family business, was established in 1933 and was operated for many years by Pete and Mildred Mathews and Woodrow and Iris Mathews. She was a faithful member of the San Augustine Church of Christ. She is survived by one daughter, Martha Mathews Butts and husband, John Harvey, of San Augustine; sons, John Richard Mathews and wife, Sharon of San Augustine, William Mark Mathews of Dallas, and Robert Bradley Mathews and wife, Kaye of San Augustine. She was born in Denning in San Augustine County, a daughter of James Fisher Rawson and Madeline Ruth Moss. She attended Baylor Teachers College and taught for a number of years. She was married to J.D. Harkrider in Beaumont May 26, 1934. She had been a resident of Nacogdoches since 1944. She was a member of the Mound and Starr Church of Christ, and was a Bible Class teacher and worked with her husband in their family business. She was a talented artist. Survivors include her husband, J. D. Harkrider of Nacogdoches; two sons David Harkrider of Englewood, Colorado and Robert Harkrider of Orlando, Florida; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters, Florence (Mrs. Kirby) Smith, Mildred (Mrs. Pete) Mathews, Iris (Mrs. Woodrow) Mathews all of San Augustine and Bill (Mrs. Richard) Krause of Freeport. |

She was the Cafeteria Manager and Director of Catering for OPUBCO for over 20 years. She loved entertaining and had a flair for cooking. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, her brothers, J. V. and Lester. She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth White of Atlanta, Georgia; 2 grandsons, Jeffrey Lawson and Lloyd Lawson; and a 5 day old great-granddaughter, Denisa Ann Lawson. The birthdays of Mrs. Striffler, Mrs. G.E. Krapf and Grant Reagh, all of Cass City, and W.R. Kaiser of Detroit all occur within a week. Members of all four families were present at dinner. The 1941 issue of the Striffler-Benkelman Broadcast showed that Corp. Grant Reagh, formerly of Selfridge Field, Michigan, had passed the flying cadet examination, and was being sent to school in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Later issues reported him as Missing in Action in the South Pacific. Cass City Chronicle Friday April 2, 1943 Lt. Grant Reagh is Reported Missing Mr. and Mrs. Ira Reagh of Branch, former Cass City residents, have received word that their son, Lt. Grant Reagh, has been Missing in Action since February 25. Grant, who is 23 years old, is a graduate of Cass City High School, having finished his studies here with the Class of 1937. He spent one year at Central State College at Mt. Pleasant and then enlisted in the Air Corps. His parents received a letter from him dated February 24. The Striffler-Benkelman Broadcast, Vol. 7, September 4, 1944, noted that Grant had been MIA since February, 1943 in the So. Ira Reagh was born in Sanilac County on August 22, 1885, the son of the late James and Margaret Reagh. He and Miss Alice Stiffler were married in Cass City in 1906. They moved to Branch nine years ago. Mr. Reagh is survived by his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret CURTIS, Muskegon, and Mrs. Marian McINTYRE, Detroit; two sons, Stanley REAGH, Muskegon and John Arnold REAGH, who attends Michigan State College, East Lansing; three grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Mabel HUTCHINS, Vassar, and three brothers, Ernest, John and Lloyd REAGH, all of Cass City. A son, Lt. Grant REAGH, was reported missing in action in a flight over the Pacific in World War II. Arnold Reagh was stationed at Fort DuPont, Delaware, as Motor Post Clerk and Staff Driver. A few years later, in the same publication (Vol. 7, September 4, 1944), it was noted that Lt. John Arnold Reagh, bomber pilot in England, had completed 17 missions and received the Air Medal. As of the September 3, 1945 issue (Vol. 8), it was reported that he completed 35 missions over Germany and was sent back to the U.S.A. as an instructor. After his honorable discharge, he was living in Birmingham, Michigan. Vol. 9, dated September 2, 1946 reported that he was enrolled in the Business Administration department at Michigan State College. The September 6, 1948 issue of the STRIFFLER BENKELMAN BROADCAST, Volume 11, reported that he had graduated from Michigan State that year and was working as an accountant for Shell Oil Co. in Detroit. In Volume 14 of the same periodical it was reported he was selling business machines for Remington Rand. The 1964 issue of the same periodical reported that Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Curtis (his brother-in-law) and Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Reagh were awarded trips to Italy by the Underwood Corporation, and the Reagh's has also visited Hawaii in May as guests of Underwood. Cass City Chronicle Thursday, August 22, 2001 Page 9 John A. Reagh, a former resident of Saginaw, died Thursday, Aug. 9, at his home in Santa Rosa, Calif. He was born in Cass City, the son of Alice and Ira Reagh. He graduated from Cass City High School. He then attended Central Michigan University and later graduated from Michigan State University. He was a B-17 pilot in the 8?sup?th?/sup? Air Force and flew 35 bombing missions. After returning the the United States, he served as an Army Air Force Instructor. While living in Saginaw, he owned and operated Central Office Equipment Company from 1958 until he moved to California in 1989. He was a member of the First Congregational Church and Riverside Kiwanis. He is survived by his wife, Florence, children, Molly JONES of Mill Valley, Calif., Susan KARAKASEVIC of St. Helena, Calif., and John W. Marian will fondly be remembered for doing crossword puzzles, her love of books, her desserts, her flower gardens, her brisk gate, and her boundless energy and strong determination. He was 56 at the time of the 1920 census, so would have been born about 1864. Burt's mother, Martha, was born in Iowa; she was 55, so her birth year would have been 1865. There were 3 children--all born in Iowa--listed as still living with Burt's parents: Lloyd, a manager of a produce station [hard to read, but "station" is my guess] (23), Nettie (20), and Gladys (17). Burial was in Hollywood cemetery at McComb where Mr. Sandifer has been buried since his death about 20 years ago. Mrs. Sandifer died about 7 p.m. Wednesday at the home of a son Norse Sandifer, at Silver Creek, Miss. She had been in fair health during a visit in McComb about six weeks ago but about a week ago her condition began to decline. Officiating at the last rites were the Rev. J. B. Hunt, assisted by the Rev. W. S. Cameron and the Rev. Charles Daniels. Formerly Nancy Reed, Mrs. Sandifer was born at Wesson, Miss., and about 60 years ago was married to James Sandifer. Surviving besides the sons at McComb and Silver Creek are one other son John of Quinton, Miss.; one daughter, Mrs. Jessie Cunningham of Annison, N.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Mollie McCullough of Los Angeles.
