15116 I6666  McIlhaney  Joe Singleton  18 Oct 1902  28 Nov 1999  Obituary below, copied from his FindAGrave memorial page, created by David Sifford. FindAGrave also links him to his parents, John Richardson McIlhaney and Ollie Deliah Umberson.

Services for Joe S. McIlhaney, 97, of Lubbock will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Ford Memorial Chapel of First Baptist Church with the Rev. John H. Ballard officiating.

Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home.

He died on Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999, in the SouthHaven Residential Care Home.

He was born on Oct. 18, 1902, in Gholson. He moved to Lubbock in 1925. He married Io Halbert in 1934. He established McIlhaney Creamery in 1925 for production and sale of butter. Sales offices were located in Lubbock, Beaumont, San Antonio and El Paso. He ultimately shipped butter as far as the West Coast and Chicago.

With the advent of oleo margarine, butter sales declined at which time he established McIlhaney Dairy Products Company. He then manufactured and distributed multiple dairy products. Retail delivery was accomplished by horse- drawn milk wagons in the Lubbock area. His company was the last to discontinue this colorful practice.

He sold his business in 1950. He made donations of equipment to Texas Tech and supported the Scottish Rite Children's Hospital and the Texas Boy's Ranch. He was a life member of the Masonic Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite, Texas Tech Dad's Club and the First Baptist Church where he served as deacon.

A daughter, JoAnne McIlhaney Conely, preceded him in death in 1992.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy McIlhaney Rainwater of Honey Grove; three sons, Joe S. McIlhaney Jr. of Austin, Richard G. McIlhaney of Copper Canyon and David L. McIlhaney of Ventura, Calif.; a sister, Louise Deering of Lubbock; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

15117 I21642  McIlmorrow  Prob. William  Bef 1640  Jul 1664  James McLemore, III, attorney and author of books regarding the earliest McLemore immigrants to America wrote the following about the probable ancestors of James and Abraham Macklemore of southside Virginia:

"William McIlmorrow.....(the) probable father of James Macklemore the immigrant (husband of Fortune Gilliam)....died in Colmonell Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland in July 1664 and he had at least one other son after James.....younger brother Abraham who came to America with him. William's Testament Dative is recorded in the Glasgow Commissariot records of the Scottish Records Office but it does not name his children, just his widow Mary Aitken. A legal analysis of it proves William had children, however.

James L. McLemore, III, the family authority, posted a message board note about his changes in thoughts to this theory:

I thank you for citing my earlier book as authority for several of the statements that you make in your posting. However, I hope that no one thinks that I am your authority for the assertion that the immigrant McLemore brothers James and Abraham came from Argylshire in Scotland; they did NOT. They came from Ayrshire, the old Carrick District thereof, where Robert the Bruce was earl before he was king. This was the southernmost third of the shire, consisting of Ballentrae, Colmonell, Barr, Girvan and Dailly Parishes (and perhaps one or two others to their immediate north), where the family name was rendered McIlmorrow, and the name appears in the records frequently from 1526 until the mid 1800's. The "Il" in Scottish was generally heard by the English ear in Britain and America as "Le", and the Scottish ending "ow" or "owe" was usually dropped by English writers on both sides of the Atlantic, though at least one example of it has been found in Surry County, Va. record! So I hope that your plans to do research in Scotland will allow you to change location from Argylshire to Ayrshire, or you may be barking up the wrong tree based on perpetuated misinformation that has been floating around the family in this country for years.

All of this will appear in a new edition of my book which I hope to get back to writing soon. I have just finished moving this past fall & have not yet unpacked the boxes and boxes of research materials that I have collected over the years. Once I have set up a new home office and organized these files, I anticipate about a year to complete the book, now 60% done in rough draft. But there are other projects as well. Still I hope to announce something on this and other boards then.

By the way, there were several Abraham McLemores and I do believe that I recall hearing that at least one of the later ones was a Presbyterian Minister, but I have never heard that the original one was. If you have some authority for that statement, I'd like to see it. I have always believed that the immigrants' father William McIlmorrow (d. July 1664, Colmonel Parish, Ayrshire, Scotland) was a religious man - or that his wife Mary Aitken was - as they gave religious or Biblical names to most of their sons (except the probable 1st born, William), including Abraham (after the Patriarch), James (after the eldest brother of Jesus), and Mungo (after the patron saint of Glasgow & the SW Lowlands. And James named his youngest son Ephraim, another Old Testament name. I have always believed from the date of their arrival in America that the brothers came as a result of the Covenanting Wars, which ended in the year of their arrival, 1689, but I have never been able to determine for sure which side they had been on - the Anglican or the Presbyterian one. But I have always told my own preachers every time we got a new one at church that my ancestors left Scotland to get away from long-winded Presbyterian preachers and that each should remember that we don't pay for overtime!

http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/mB0.2ACEB/377.1.3

The earlier theories about the origin of the McLemore family name that James referred to was that the McLemore clan originated among the mixed cultures of Gaelic-speaking inhabitants of eastern Ireland and western Scotland. This culture resulted from the intermarriage of the native Gaelic population with the Norwegian and Danish Vikings who raided and occupied these areas. The surname was thought to be derived from "Mac Ghille Mhuire" which literally means "son of the Servant of the Blessed Virgin Mary." It was quite common for Norsemen, upon converting to Christianity, to take names with some sort of religious significance. The name was first used during the first half of the 12th century among the Scandinavian population in Waterford, Ireland and/or among a similar population in the west of present day Scotland. In the last half of the 15th century, it was common in the parts of western Scotland known to have been strongly influenced by the Scandinavians, such as Galloway and Argylshire. Whether the Scottish clan descend from those of Waterford, or vice versa, is not known with certainty. When the early Macklemore's emigrated to America, they also preserved the name, which has since evolved to the present spelling of McLemore. In Scotland, the name continued to evolve, in the Highlands to Gilmore, and in the lowlands to Murray.

The first family member known to be in America was Mun. Macklemore. He immigrated to Virginia from probably from Argylshire or Ayshire, Scotland around 1679, as an indentured servant to a Virginia landowner. He is either the older brother or father of James and Abraham Macklemore, the brothers who are generally conceded to be the founders of the family in the United States. Both James and Abraham were farmers near the Virginia/North Carolina border. Their descendants settled first in that area, and then gradually spread to Georgia and Tennessee and further even westward.

This theory was from the books "The Early History of The McLemore Family of Virginia and The Carolinas" by James L. McLemore, III (available for purchase at P.O. Box 1085, Suffolk Virginia 23434) and "Ole Rosinheels: A Genealogical Sketch of the Family of Major Amos McLemore, 27th Mississippi Infantry Regiment, C.S.A" by Dr. Rudy H. Leverett.

And finally, a very detailed post regarding the most current theory, including an extract of the will of William McIImorrow was posted to the following website:

http://www.unsolvedancestry.com/awards.asp

Many believe Mary Aitken (Aitkine) and William McIlmorrow of Colmonell Parish, Ayreshire, Scotland are the parents. - William McIlmorrow died in July 1664, and has a Testament Dative on file with the Scottish Archive (Scottishdocuments.com). There is no mention of children, but people believe they had children because of the word (bairns). - Other Mary Macklemore's seem to exist, causing confusion on the connection (finding out who these Mary's are might help solve the puzzle.) The following is a message I wrote earlier describing my thoughts on a Mary Macklemore that helps the confusion about the McLemore Scottish roots: "Mary could possibly fit in the position of this Mary Aitken, but I feel it is more unlikely than likely. William McIlmorrow died 6/8/1664, so it's possible that Mary moved to Aberdeenshire and remarried William Turner in 1670. However, with the birth of James and Abraham being around 1660, this would make the Mary in your document only 10 or 11 when she had children. Plus, according to a McLemore researcher, in 17th century Scotland the women kept their maiden name throughout life?so I don't believe this is the same Mary, since she would have to be the daughter of a McLemore/Mcilmorrow. So now I wonder about the possibility of James and Abraham having a sister. I recently came across another family line that has a Mary Ann McLemore married to Dr. Thomas Gibson Carson. According to a couple of people's research (I have no documentation on this), her birth was in 1688 in Londonberry, Tyrone, North Ireland. This also has her married in July 27, 1707. If documentation of this person exists, then that opens the possibility of a sister or at least another documented McLemore as old as James and Abraham. It also opens the possibility of where the family was located. Also, if this Mary Ann were born around that time and was a sister, then that would put serious doubt on the William and Mary McIlmorrow connection since this person was born after William's death. Then there is the land grant for Col. Edward Hill, which he is receiving land for bringing people over, including a Mary Macklemore. According to a McLemore researcher, this was a repatent of the same land to Col. Hill with Mungo Macklemore on the first one (dated 1681)." This can be found online at the Library of Virginia Digital Collection: Land Office Patents and Grants. - Notes from Turner-Parker Pedigree, Oct. 1898, This manuscript was written by Wm. Parker in 1791 and copied by Wm. H. Sassnet in Oct 1898." Wm.Turner, a minister of the Kirk of Scotland was born in Aberdeenshire Scotland in 1645. He married Mary McLemore, born in same shire in 1650. married in 1670. On account of persecution of the Covenanters he fled with his young bride and settled in the North of Ireland. Persecution followed him and his co-believers there and with quite a colony he came to Maryland in 1680 and settled in Worcester Co. in 1680- not far from Snow Hill the present county seat. There were born to this couple; William-1671. Elisha-1672. Mary 1674. Ebenezer 1675. John 1675. John 1677. Gertrude 1679. Thomas 1681."

Abraham and James Macklemore were very likely brothers. - Abraham Macklemore's will was signed Jan 4, 1735 (NC State Archives) witnessed by Wiliam Gillim, William Clanton, and Joseph Brady. - Three sons, Atkins (b. 1724 Bertie Co., NC, d. May 1791 in Warren Co., NC), Young (b. 1726, d. bef. April 9, 1804, Williamson Co., TN) and William (b. 1728, d. bef. 1736/7 in Bertie Co., NC) - Wife, Mary (Young) who died in Northampton Co., NC around 1737/38 - James Macklemore's will dated Feb 7, 1733 in Bertie Co. NC. Witnessed by John Doyle, Abraham Macklemore, and Thomas Roberson. - James's children, William (b. abt 1692, d. 1750), Margery (b. abt 1696), John (b. abt. 1698 in Surry Co., Virginia, d. abt 1767 in Sussex Co., VA), James (b. 1702-5, d. abt. 1770), Charles (b. bet. 1705-9), Ephraim (b. 1709-12), d. abt. 1787) - Wife, Fortune (Fortain) Gilliam (b. 1671 in Surry Co. VA, d. abt. 1736 Bertie Co., VA), possible daughter of John Gilliam and Margery Henshaw. - There is a 1695 Virginia headright record for the importation into Virginia of a Mary Macklemore in a patent to Col. Edward Hill, and it was a repatent of a 1681 patent to the same man for the same land in Charles City County (I think), and for the most part with the same headrights, with one or two exceptions, specifically including the Macklemore one - in the earlier patent it was to Mun. Macklemore. This is the only reference to a Mun. (Mungo) Macklemore, so there is room for error in the interpretation of who this is.

15135 I47556  McKellips  Norma Darlene  26 Jan 1938  10 Nov 2019  Norma Darlene (McKellips) Crays, 81, died at Heritage Crossings in Geneva, Nebraska on Sunday, November 10, 2019 surrounded by loved ones. Originally from Clifton, Kansas, Norma finally settled on the Crays family farm with her husband of 40 years, Roland Crays.

Norma is survived in death by husband Roland, daughter Mary Eaton of Concordia, KS, 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and various cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents Harley and Kathlene McKellips, granddaughter Sandi Zieman, sons Alvie Starkey and Samuel Starkey, daughters Pamela Lauritsen and Maggie Graham, sisters Deana McKellips, Leola Jackson, Shirley Brunell, and brothers John McKellips and Delton McKellips.

Norma worked in nursing homes most of her life. As a natural caregiver, she passed that love for others on to have multiple generations in her family work within the healthcare field.
Unafraid to speak her mind, Norma's genuine sassiness softened hearts, opened minds, and built bridges to unforeseen friendships. Whether at home, a nursing home, or in a hospital, Norma loved to play a rousing game of Spite & Malice, Frackle, or Marbles. Hours of memories were made over game time.

It was Norma's wish not to have services beyond a private family gathering.

He didn't want Mary to marry Thomas Kelly, but she did anyway, obviously, or I guess I wouldn't be here. She came from the the Mckenna and Shanahan family. That's about all I know."  STR06
15140 I19556  McKenna  Mary Veronica  Apr 1877  Aft 1930  (Research):This MAY be Mary with her family in 1880 and 1900. It is possible that the family in 1880 and 1900 are differing families, based on the location of Margaret's location of birth in 1880 vs. 1900. Also, son Thomas, born March 1879, is not listed with the family in 1880.

Additionally, based on the fact that Mary Killy/Kelly is shown to have parents born in Germany in 1900, she may not be the same Mary McKenna that married Thomas J. Kelley around 1900/1901 in New York.

Thomas A. McKenna is listed as the son of Margaret McKenna, whereas Mary Killy is listed simply as a boarder. However, when Thomas McKenna registered for the draft during the First World War, circa 1917, he listed his nearest relative as Mary Kelly.

When Thomas Andrew McKenna registered for the draft during World War I, he was a resident of 2811 8 Ave NY, and his occupation was listed as Plaster, but he was not currently employed. His date of birth was shown as 29 Mar 1879, and his nearest relative was Mary Kelly of the same address. He was of Medium heigth and build, with blue eyes and black hair.

It also appears that John Shannon, who was boarding with the family in 1910, is likely the brother of the widowed Margaret McKenna. The birth certificate, above, for Thomas McKenna shows his mother as Margaret Shannon McKenna. John Shannon's parents were born in the same places as Margaret's, and he immigrated to the US in the same year. Eileen Bramhall Hav? also stated that her great grandmother, Mary McKenna, came from the "Mckenna and Shanahan families." The 1905 New York State Census lists a family in Manhattan consisting of Margaret McKenna, age 49, Thos. McKenna, age 26, and John Shannahan, age 39. New York; State Population Census Schedules, 1905; Election District: A.D. 23 E.D. 25; City: Manhattan; County: New York; Page: 35.

A birth certificate for Andrew W. McKenna, born 17 Dec 1882 in Manhattan, New York, was also located, and also showed parents as Andrew McKenna and Margarat Shannon. He is not listed with the family in 1900 and likely died, as Margaret was shown in 1900 as having given birth to six children in total, with only two still living.

The Burger King: Jim McLamore and the Building of an Empire (1998)

James W. McLemore was born to wealth, but his father lost the family fortune in the stock market crash of 1929 and became a turkey farmer. His mother was committed to a mental hospital shortly thereafter, and he never saw her again, as children were not allowed to visit. As a young man McLamore worked as a restaurant manager and then owner, and in 1954 he became Dave Edgerton's business partner in the first Burger King, originally called Insta Burger King. Three years later McLamore proposed adding a "Whopper" to the menu, basing the recipe on a terrific burger he bought from a competitor's burger stand. Edgerton and McLemore sold the company to Pillsbury in 1967, with McLemore remaining as President. He oversaw the introduction of the first version of the company's iconic "Burger King" advertising character in 1970.

Services for John T. McLamore, 49, were held at First Christian Church. Mr. McLamore was killed in the crash of his plane in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Services were officiated by Dr. George W. Davis, pastor of First Christian Church at Wichita Falls, assisted by Rev. Charles Morris, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Seymour.

Bringing the urn, were Robert R. Welch of Hadden Field, New Jersey, a close associate of John McLamore and Herbert M. Hucke, with RCA Victor, who came from Baltimore. They came by plane. John T. Woodward of Los Angeles, also with RCA Victor was at the funeral.

John T. McLamore lost his life while returning to his home at Hadden Field, New Jersey from a meeting with RCA executives in Washington, DC. Mr. McLamore's associates at the meeting went home by train, but he finally decided to come back in his plane, in spite of the soupy weather conditions. He crashed into a hill side, not far from the landing field, where he was attempting to come down. He was alone in the plane. The plane caught fire and burned. It was necessary to cremate the body.

Mr. McLamore's parents were the first settlers of Baylor County. After his mother's death, he continued to live with his father at Round Timber community with part of the time living at the home of his grandparents who lived there as well. He attended the Round Timber Community school until entering high school at Seymour in the 8th grade. After graduating from Seymour High Schoo, he graduated from Texas A&M College with a BA degree in electrical engineering.

For 27 years, Mr. McLamore had been with the RCA Victor Company. His specialty was radar engineering. He had become one of the most important men in the company and had done well in the matter of his own financial affairs. Mr. McLamore had high-security clearance with the US Defense Department and was involved with top secret plans.

For a number of years, John McLamore had been in Wichita Falls and Seymour for Christmas. He often visited in the home of his cousin, Mrs. J.W. "Madge [Plants]" McKee of New York.

John McLamore had never married.

Survived by one sister - Mrs. John "Valerie" Tevis; one uncle - Roy Stevens; one aunt - Mrs. R.C. Plants.

Obituary

R.S. McLemore

Died:--At his home near Wheeling, La., June 15, 1906, R. S. McLemore, age 75 years, 8 months and 24 days.

His remains were interred at Mt. Zion Cemetery June 16.

He died where he and had lived for thirty-nine years, and wehre he reared all his family. His troubles were complicated and either one of them were sufficient to cause death.

The deceased was a true and loving husband and a kind and faithful father. He was a noted Christian, and a peacemaker among men. He was loyal to his country, having served four years in the Confederate Army. God, in his wisdom, saw fit to tak him away, but oh! how sad to part with one so near and dear.

He leaves a wife and ten children and a host of dear friends to mourn his death.

15196 I38007  McLemore  ???  Bef 1785  Yes, date unknown  It is being ASSUMED that Reuben, Matthew and Dorcus McLemore, all born between 1805 and 1811 in South Carolina, and residents of Copiah County, MS at the time of the 1850 and/or 1860 census are likely siblings, and were born to a currently unknown McLemore father.

This is based not just on their close ages and birthplace, but also on the research of Ann and Eldon McLemore, who provided the following information:

"REUBEN McLEMORE filed a bond for $16,000 in Copiah. Named on the bond were ELIZABETH McLEMORE (wife???), Virginia Marsh, MATHEW McLEMORE (brother???) and Uriah Millsap, dated 5 Dec 1860. Signed by all except Virginia."

Ann and Eldon also state that guardianship for Mary Ann Whitehead, a daughter of Dorcus (nee McLemore), was probated for Mary Ann to Reuben McLemore, brother of her mother, on 22 Mar 1867."

Ann and Eldon believe that the parents of Reuben, Matthew and Dorcus are John McLemore and Winnie Baltice. No evidence has been found, however, to prove this link.

It also appears that the reference to Winnie Baltice might actually be to Vinie Batiste, who married another McLemore and was not the mother of Reuben, Matthew or Dorcus of Copiah County; or Wesley or John of Scott County, whom Ann and Eldon speculate might also be siblings of Reuben, Matthew and Dorcus.
