Rueben Morgan

Notes:

The letter transcribed below was written by Abner E. Morgan in October, 1946. It was supplied to me in an email from Jeanie Trimble of Thonostosassa, Florida. She in turn received it from Janie Blanton. Jeanie noted that although Abner referred to his great-grandfather as being named "Isaac Morgan", all other sources she found seemed to point to his name as actually being Reuben. This contradiction has not been explained. Perhaps both names were his given names, or perhaps Abner was confusing Rueben Morgan's first name with that of Rueben's father-in-law, Isaac Newton, also of Duplin County.

"This information reference to my great grandfather Isaac Morgan came to me from my father Frances Cornelius "Neal" Morgan as handed down from father to son from around the year 1800 to date.

Isaac Morgan. Born in Ireland, date unknown, emigrated to the United States in or about the year 1800. Settled on a farm in North Carolina. Moved to South Carolina by wagon about 1828, where he farmed for two years.

He moved again to South Georgia in 1830, and settled in Brooks County and I am reliably informed that the old home site is now inside of corporate limits of Quitman, GA. His family consisted of three daughters and seven sons ranging in ages from small to grown up. One of Isaac's sons John, a married son, died while they lived in South Carolina, leaving a son named Malachi or Mae. Another son, Daniel by name took over and recorded Mae-thus-great granddad reached Georgia with three daughters and six sons and a grandson.

Daughters: Dorcus, Sally, Nancy

--Dorcus: Married Edmond Blanton son of David Blanton & Nancy Goff. (B.C. Blanton, a direct descendant. My father and B.C. Blantons father being first cousins).

--Nancy: Married a Wilson of whom the late John T. Wilson of Shady Grove was a direct descendant. My father and the Wilsons (Enoch Wilson) were also cousins.

--Sallie: I do not know much about her and have never contacted any of her offsprings, however I do know she married Enoch Bell and that around 1890 they lived in Kissimee, Florida.

Sons: Joe, John, Daniel, Duncan, Reuben, Isaac and Enoch Morgan.

--Enoch Morgan was my grandfather who married Martha Ann Williams in Georgia, his wife being the sister of a Baptist preacher, of Georgia, but later of Lee, Madison County, Fla. The said preacher being the grandfather of the late W. O. Williams of Perry, Fla.

To this marriage were born 4 sons and 5 daughters, my father being born in Georgia in 1842. In 1846, my granddad Enoch Morgan and J. Pasco's grandad, Isaac, moved to Florida. Isaac settling on part of the place now owned by E.J. Rowell at Iddo and Enoch Morgan settled on the Old Greenville Road (later called the Old Salt Road) some three miles north of old Shady Grove in Taylor County. At this location my fathers three brothers grew up.

War. At the opening of the war, father's two brothers Joe and John entered the Southern Army and were immediately sent to Virginia, never to return. Joe died in battle and John of disease.

Later my father, and (his) younger brother Math, volunteered for service in the U.S. Army (Union). My father was shot and carried a Confederate bullet in his breast to his death in 1905. On returning from service, my father bought a homestead claim to a 160 acre tract of government land from one Wright Hendry. This land being just North of Shady Grove but in Taylor County. On this tract he built a log house. Then he married my mother, Lucy Alice Lugenia McFail. To this marriage was 4 sons and 2 daughters born. Ollen, Asberry, Abner (that's me), Ella, Joe and Margarett.

Margarett being only nine days old at my mothers death in 09/19/1882. Ollen and Ella died I think in 1892, and Asberry died last year in 1945, leaving myself and Margarett.

Back to Georgia. I have already told what became of my Granddad Enoch sisters and will tell you about the sons.

--John died in South Carolina.

--Enoch and Isaac came to Florida as stated above.

--THE OTHERS INCLUDING MAE, MOVED TO MAGNOLIA SPRINGS, JASPER COUNTY, TEXAS EITHER IN 1849 OR 1852. MY FATHER KEPT IN CONSTANT TOUCH WITH THEM UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1905. IN 1913 THROUGH THE POSTMASTER I GOT IN TOUCH WITH MAE IN ERIN, TEXAS AND HAD A LETTER FROM HIM, AND GOT ANOTHER LETTER IN 1914. HE WAS 86 THEN AND NEVER ANSWERED AGAIN. (Emphasis added).

Back to Neal my Father. As stated above there were 4 sons and 2 daughters. Ollen born in 1872 and died in 1893 and buried at Mt. Enow Church near Plant City, Florida. Asberry born 03/18/1875 died 1945 in Pahokee, buried Homestead. Abner, (I was) born 70 years ago to day 10/17/1946 and (am) happy to know that time is near for my final journey. Ella b. 1875 d. 1893. Joe b. 1880 Margarett b. 1882.

Carolyn Lockhart recounts a similar story: "There were five brothers to come into Jasper County. Duncan first, Daniel, Malachi (Note: Actually a nephew), James and William (Note: Also probably nephews). John Morgan died in Georgia." Carolyn further indicated that Ruben Morgan could be found on the 1779 Iredell County, North Carolina census with 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 26-45 and himself. In 1790, he was in Franklin County, North Carolina where he can be found with 4 females and 1 male 0-16. In 1800, he was in Sampson County, North Carolina, listed with 3 males under 10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female under 10, and 1 female 16-26. (Note: Not verified that the 1779 and 1790 census listings are for the same Ruben Morgan).

The information on the Morgan Family was compiled from information that was generously shared with by Jeannie Trimble of Florida, Kenneth Morgan and Nan Kittell of Jasper, Carolyn Lockhart of Nederland, Jo Ann Gartig of Nacogdoches and others.

Several researchers show Rueben Morgan as the son of a Theophilus Morgan, however Jeanie Trimble thinks this unlikely. Bonnie Smith shows him as the son of William Morgan and Rebeckah Mills of Bladen and Guilford, North Carolina. I have not seen any documentation of this either.

Rueben married Dorcus Newton on 25 Nov 1793 in Duplin County, North Carolina. Dorcus (daughter of Isaac Newton and Jemima Chambers) was born before 1773 in Duplin County, North Carolina; died on 3 May 1824 in Duplin County, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Rueben married Perthenia Bell on 15 Feb 1825 in Duplin County, North Carolina. Perthenia (daughter of Hezekiah Bell and Martha Baggett) was born about 1785 in Duplin County, North Carolina; was christened on 12 Sep 1835 in Bethlehem Primative Baptist Church, Quitman, Brooks County, Georgia; died about 1847 in Lowndes County, Georgia. Notes:

Abner Morgan included him in the group of brothers "that moved to Magnolia Springs, Texas." Not located on census indexes, however. May have died young?

Notes:

John was said to have died in South Carolina before his family moved to Georgia. However, since he was married in Georgia he probably actually died after the move to Georgia, but before the family moved on to Texas and Florida.It appears that he did die prior to the 1840, because his widow, Hannah Morgan is listed as the head of household in the "1840 Decatur County Georgia Census Index " (Frances T. Ingmire, Mountain Press).

John's five children, along with a 28 year old "Mrs. Morgan," are listed in the 1850 Decatur County, GA census in household #521. They live nearby to the McLemores, Boyetts, Morgans, and Kellys. It appears that John may have remarried, as his apparent widow, age 28, was too young to be the mother of any but the very youngest of his five children, who ranged in age from 14 to 23. This potential second wife would have been born circa 1822.

The online Decatur County, Georgia census for 1850 lists the family as follows:

"at an Association at Antioch Sept. 25, 1868 Simon William joined Church by Experance also Daniel Morgan..."

June Conferance 1872, "Church met and after Divine servise set in conferance the Church taken up the subject of Brother Daniel Morgans non attendance as a Church member, it was unanimously resolved that Brothers Amos Richardson J.R. Davis visit the Brother and know the cause of his non attendance at Church and to report the same to the Church as early as convenient....."

July Conferance, 1872 "Church met and after Divine servise set in conferance. Community caled on to report the case of Defaulting Brethren D. Morgan and E. Shepherd and the Brethren being present themselves made their own excuse it was received as good..."

Nan located a copy of a deed from the Heirs of Daniel Morgan to John McLemore. The heirs were deeding the "160 acres of land granted by the state of Texas to said Daniel Morgan by Patent No. 550, Vol 41, and dated Feb 3, 1874 said 160 acres being community property of said Daniel and Mary Morgan to John McLemore." This deed was dated May 1886.

The heirs listed, "being the only surviving heirs of said decedents....(were) James Morgan, Elizabeth Jones, Owen Morgan, heirs at law....(and also) the following named persons who are the grandchildren of the said decedents, viz: J.F. McLemore and Mary Ann Horn and her husband Elma Horn, Jesse Morgan and Allie Morgan, Ebenezer B. Lee, Timothy Lee, Angelina Watson and her husband John Watson." (Vol P, Page 367)

In a letter to Melinda Strong dated September 4, 1999, Carolyn Lockhart indicated that she had heard "that all he had was 160 acres and a member of the family tried to contest the will."

The state of birth are listed in error as Georgia, whereas the Morgan's were actually all born in North Carolina.

Daniel and Mary's two oldest children had left home prior to the above census. Son James was already in Jasper County, Texas, listed as a laborer in the home of 74 year old Elijah ISAACS of South Carolina. Elijah ISAACS is said to be the son of Samuel ISAACS and Mary MORGAN of Lincoln Co., TN; Pendleton Co, S.C, Wilkes Co, N.C. and Lincoln Co, TN.

Daughter Sarah, along with her husband John McLemore, lived two households away (516/516) from her parents in Decatur County. Also living nearby was Daniel's nephew, Malachi Morgan.

The family moved westward, as in 1860, they could be found in Jasper County, Texas:

Ruby Boyett Burkett reports that two of Daniel and Mary's two youngest daughters, Elizabeth and Dorcus, stayed behind in Georgia. Both of them were widowed during the Civil War, and they journeyed from Georgia to Texas by boat. Daniel met the boat in Galveston, taking his daughters and grandchildren back to Jasper by wagon. Daniel himself was widowed at the time of the 1870 Federal census, and can be found living with this daughter Elizabeth Jones:

It appears that it was Rueben Morgan, Sr, and not this, his namesake son, who married Perthena Bell, the widow of Joseph Williams.

Rueben Morgan, Jr, who is listed as between the ages of 20-30, was found on the 1830 Decatur County, Georgia census. He was listed as single, with no children in his home. This 1830 listing had Ruebin Morgan Sr, Rueben Morgan Jr, Duncan Bell, Duncan Morgan, and Malakier Kelly listed consecutively.

Rueben was not listed in the 1840 census index.

A 30 year old Reuben Morgan, born in North Carolina, was living in the home of James and Sarah Hodges, and working as a laborer at the time of the 1850 Lowndes County, Georgia Census. This might be the same person as Rueben Morgan, Jr, with his age incorrectly estimated. Not located on the 1860 or subsequent census indexes.

In her letter dated 12 September 1999, Jo Ann Lee Gartig writes that "Kenneth (Morgan) has asked me to pass on to you the information which he learned at the Morgan cemetery off the road to Roganville. This small square of land, surrounded by upright concrete posts with two strands of clothesline wire strung through them to provide a fence, is located on the back boundary of property now owned by an elderly gentleman named Leroy Walker. Mr. Walker did not know much about the history of the cemetery or the people in it, but he did say there was an Indian there. This might be Mary Morgan, wife of Daniel...The "rights" to the cemetery belong to W.D. "Bill" Morgan, and 83 year old man living in Orange, Texas. Bill Morgan keeps the cemetery cleaned. The cemetery has one double headstone which reads:

There were also seven ironstone rocks marking other graves.

In searching for this cemetery, Kenneth had stopped at houses along the road to ask about its locality. At the third house he came to, he learned from Mr. J.F. Ferguson that Kenneth's ancestors property was just up the road on Everitts Creek where the ancestor had once had a gristmill. This is how Kenneth met Mr. Walker and was shown the cemetery.

This cemetery by-the-way, is located on the headright of M.L. Morgan.

In a postscript to the letter dated 13 September 1999, Jo Ann adds that she called Bill Morgan at his home. He is the one responsible for placing the headstone for Duncan and Elizabeth Morgan in the "old Morgan cemetery" near Roganville. Unfortunately, he does not know about any of the other graves. He seemed to remember that a young boy was buried there. After I related the story of Dorcus Morgan Lee's youngest son Elias Banto (Lee) having bled to death after cutting his foot as a young teen, he recalled that his father had told that story also. It seems that the boy was at the grist mill on Everitts Creek which borders the land where the cemetery is when the accident happened. Whether this boy was Elias Banto Lee or not we will probably never know.

Nan stated that both family tradition and the Jasper 1860 census indicate that two member's of the Morgan family listed in 1850 and 1860 were actually slaves rather than children: G.W. age 18, and Joseph age 17, both listed as being "domestics." It is noted that neither were still living with the family after the Civil War.

Isaac married Flora McDonald about 1837 in Lowndes County, Georgia. Flora was born about 1814 in North Carolina; died about 1853. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Abner Morgan wrote, "I do not know much about her (Sallie) and have never contacted any of her offsprings, however I do know she married Enoch Bell and that around 1890 they lived in Kissimee, Florida."

There were several intermarriages between the BELL and MORGAN family. Sallie's brother, Duncan, was married to Elizabeth Bell, and her father, Rueben, married the widow of Joseph Williams, Perthenia Bell. However, a family headed by Enoch and/or Sallie Bell has not been located in any census index from 1850 through 1880. Nor is it known where Sallie fit in the birth order of the children in her parent's family. If she were among their firstborn children, the year of her birth could have fallen around 1794. If she were their youngest child, she may have been born as late as 1817 or 1818.

Darrel Bell, the Florida GenWeb Project Coordinator, lists a Sarah UNKNOWN as the widow of John Bell, and a daughter-in-law of Hezekiah and Martha (Baggett) Bell. Perhaps Abner Morgan recalled Sallie's last name of Bell correctly, but was mistaken about the first name of her husband. It appears that she actually married John BELL.

The John BELL family is listed on the 1840 Federal Census for Madison County, Florida.

It appears John died prior to the 1850 Lowndes County, Georgia, census. Lowndes County, Georgia borders Madison County, Florida. His widow lived just two household's away from Nancy (Morgan) WILSON, a sister to Sallie.

According to Darrel Bell, Sarah "Sallie" married second Christopher Edwards, and they relocated to present day Seminole County, Florida. It appears she was again widowed. This appears to the be same family at the time of the 1860 census, despite a slight difference in the expected ages

It is also possible, but less likely. that instead of being her parent's youngest child, Sallie might also have been born shortly after their marriage (ca. 1794 to 1799). If this were the case, then perhaps it may have been Duncan Bell that she married, as she would have been close in age and proximity to Duncan who was born in 1795.

The widowed Duncan Bell was living in Madison County, Florida in 1850. He was the father of Abraham, Martha, Patrick, Duncan, Lydia and Enoch BELL. He was born in North Carolina, with his children being born in Georgia. His oldest son, George, was living next door with the family of Glisson WILLIAMS. Glisson is the son of Perthenia Bell Williams Morgan, by her first husband.

Notes:

Kenneth Morgan reported that his grandfather, Thomas Marion Morgan, loved his "Uncle Mal" and spent much time in his household when he was growing up. He said Mal was a sleepwalker, and the boys tried to watch out for him at night to prevent him from getting hurt. Early one morning, Mal asked the boys to go with him to their field across the creek to bring a turning plow back to the garden. When they arrived at the field the plow was missing, and they began to study tracks closely in the plowed ground. They found Mal's barefoot tracks where he had picked up the plow and walked across the creek on a log. Arriving back at the garden near the house they found the plow. Mal remembered nothing about the trip in the moonlight.

Joan O'Banion Reynolds lists his children as Sarah, Marie, Columbus, Texana and Mary. She based this on correspondence with Linda Kaps of Houston.

I could not locate William on subsequent census records, but did find with appears to be at least some of the children listed. IF this is for the same family, it appears that William must have died between 1855 and 1860. Additionally, his widow and children moved, either prior to or after his death, three counties to the west of Jasper.

In a column titled "Grandma Olds saw first train to Buna and man on the moon" Jasper New Boy columnist Kenneth Morgan wrote:

"....Much more is known about the Morgan family, who came to Texas from North Carolina and Georgia before the Civil War. Great grandfather Reuben L. Morgan fought from the Confederacy and lost his life in this tragic war. His father's name was John Morgan. John's father was Reuben Sr.......

When Reuben first migrated to Texas, he was accompanied by his brother Malalchi, and his uncles Daniel and Duncan Morgan."

Mr. Morgan generously provided futher details about his paternal grandparents in a letter dated June 8, 1999 to Melinda Strong. He said the "Reuben L. Morgan was born in Decatur, GA in 1835. When his father, John Morgan died, around 1850, Reuben, his brother Malachi with his wife Tomsie Williams, their Uncle Duncan with his wife Eliza Kelley, and their mother, Hannah Kelley, left Georgia and settled the community of Erin, Texas. One of their descendants, Alfred Morgan, reports that they brought two or three slaves, one of them an infant boy named George, who took on the the Morgan name. It is possible that a family of Caswells accompanied them, also bringing with them Reuben's future wife, Penelope Caswell, who also was born in Georgia, in 1832. Another possible member of the original group, and probably a sister to Penelope, Rebecca Caswell Hays is indicated by the 1860 census as having lived with Rueben and Penelope. Rebecca was listed as age 24, born in Georgia.

Rueben and Penelope were married in Jasper County in December 1858, their first child was John Edward, or Eddie born in 1859, then Thomas Marion who was born in 1860. The Civil War broke out about this time, and Reuben and Malachi both enlisted and served. According to Kenneth Morgan, the were in the 13th Texas Cavalry, General Walker's division. They fought in the Battles of Mansfield, Jenkin's Ferry, and Pleasant Hill.

During the war their mother got sick and Duncan sent for them to come home. It was decided that Malachi would stay and care for his mother and both families, and that Rueben would go back to war. It was during this leave that Penelope became pregnant with Rose Caroline or "Sissie", who was born June 26, 1862. Rueben did not live to see his youngest child. He fell ill with dysentary and it is believed that he died on May 20, 1864, in a military hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Rueben married Penelope Caswell on 1 Dec 1857 in Jasper County, Texas. Penelope was born on 7 Jun 1831 in Georgia; died on 19 Nov 1917 in Kirbyville, Jasper County, Texas; was buried on 21 Nov 1917 in Zion Hill Cemetery, Jasper, Jasper County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Sarah married Cleton "Cleat" Jackson on 10 May 1860 in Jasper County, Texas. Cleton was born in Mar 1833 in Alabama; died in Dec 1919 in Jasper County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

No record of John and Sarah's marriage has yet been located. However, it can be proved by a Deed to John McLemore by the Heirs of Daniel Morgan, dated the Seventh day of January, A.D. 1889, Jasper County, Texas. It was filed for record Jan'y 8th 1889 at 10 o'clock am and recorded January 16th 1889 at 5 pm by AJ Rigsby, Clk. (Vol P, Page 367). This deed indicates that the "heirs at law of DANIEL MORGAN and MARY MORGAN deceased . . . . (include) the grandchildren of the said decedents, viz: J.F. McLEMORE and Mary Ann (McLemore) HORN and her husband Elma HORN... " John Finn and Mary Ann were apparently the only two of John and Sarah's six children still surviving in 1889.

Sarah apparently died sometime before John's remarriage in 1859, Nan Kittell indicated that she might have died in Alexandria, Louisiana, on the way to Newton County. As her youngest daughter, Mary Ann, was said to be born in Newton County, it would appear Sarah probably died shortly after the family arrived in Texas.

In a letter provided to me by Kenneth Morgan, written by Carolyn Lockhart, she indicated that Sarah's parents, Daniel and Mary Morgan, were "100% Cherokee Indian." She said that Sarah's sister, Elizabeth, instructed her children not to mention their heritage. Elizabeth, however, always wore fringe on her dresses to secretly remind herself of her Cherokee forebearers.

Her paternal line were said to have emigrated to the United States from Ireland or Wales, so the Native heritage was presumed to be maternal. Jo Ann Lee Gartig suggests she might actually have been associated with the Creek tribe, not Cherokee. However, mtDNA testing shows her direct maternal line was HV, a very common European marker, and not one associated with native heritage. It is possible she did indeed have some Native American ancestry, but if she did, it was not through either her direct paternal or direct maternal lines, and she was certainly not "100%."

Sarah married John M. McLemore before 1844. John (son of Tobias McLemore, Sr. and Sarah "Sallie" ???) was born about 1822 in North Carolina; died in Jan 1891 in Jasper County, Texas; was buried in Zion Hill Cemetery, Jasper, Jasper County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

James appears to have been the trailblazer in the family. In 1850, he was already in Jasper County, Texas, while his parents and siblings were still in Decatur County, Georgia. He was listed as a laborer in the home of 74 year old Elijah ISAACS, born in South Carolina. The rest of the family arrived after James, moving to Jasper sometime prior to the 1860 census. Elijah ISAACS is said to be the son of Samuel ISAACS of Lincoln Co., TN; Pendleton Co, S.C, Wilkes Co, N.C. and Lincoln Co, TN. He was a twin, his brother being Elisha ISAACS. He was married to Esther Donaho. Steve Moody, a descendant of Elijah ISAACS, wrote me that "Elija Isaacks' mother was Mary Morgan, daughter of Joseph Morgan Jr. I've never been able to figure out how James was related, I thought maybe he was a cousin."

Floyd Boyett sent an email, dated April 2, 2006, with the following information about the Military service of James Morgan:

"The family is on the indigent list for Jasper Co., James is the only James (or J. M.) Morgan on the 1860 Jasper census and the only James (or J. M.) Morgan on the 1870 Jasper census. Also found James M. Morgan, son of Daniel and Mary, listed in "Civil War Soldiers of Jasper and Newton Counties of Texas" published by Ericson Books of Nacogdoches, Texas. Also found J. Morgan on the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System web site that was in the 13th Texas Calvary, Burnett's Regiment. I think we can safely say this is our man. He has no Confederate headstone."

James married Nancy Harrell on 6 Nov 1854 in Jasper County, Texas. Nancy was born on 6 Nov 1834 in Florida; died on 9 Mar 1897 in Jasper County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Said by some to have been born in Surry County, NC, but no proof cited. This seems unlikely as the family was listed in Sampson County as of the 1830 census.

Carolyn Lockhart wrote that after the death of Sion Jones in Georgia "Elizabeth sold her land in Decatur County (ca 1868) and came to Texas. She and [her widowed sister] Dorcas Lee had about 9 children with them. Someone met them in Galveston and it was the first time she had ever seen an iron cook stove. She instructed her kids not to mention their Indian ancestry. She herself never mentioned it even though she always wore fringes on her dresses to remind her own self of her heritage. She was 61 when she died, never remarried and never filed a pension from Sion Jones CSA record."

In a letter from Carolyn Lockhart, she states that Elizabeth died in the home of her oldest son, Newton B. Jones. Like the Morgan's, the Jones family were also of Welsh ancestry. The Hawthorne family were neighbors in Georgia and also in Jasper County.

Ruby Boyett showed she died in 1897, but this can not be correct as (1) she had a daughter born in 1899 (2) she can be found on the 1900 census with her husband and children and (3) her tombstone is said to be inscribed 13 Dec 1902.

Elizabeth married Sion Jones on 3 Feb 1853 in Decatur County, Georgia. Sion (son of Matthew Jones and Elizabeth Wester) was born in 1825 in Pulaski County, Georgia; died on 14 Aug 1864 in Georgia; was buried in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Rueben Morgan may have moved back to Florida after his 1857 marriage in Jasper, Texas. In an email dated April 2, 2006, Floyd Boyett passed along the following information:

"I did find a Reuben Morgan, Co. G, 3rd. Florida Infantry (Pensacola area) as a Private on the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System site. This should be Daniel's Reuben and the man we were looking for."

Based on the census listing below, it appears that Rueben Morgan died sometime between 1865 and 1870, perhaps as a result of the Civil War? It further appears that Susan remarried. Her second spouse appears to have died as well:

At the time of the 1880 census, 14 year old Josephine is living in the home of John McLemore, her uncle by marriage, and listed as Josephine Wilson.

Only Jesse and Allie are listed in the Estate settlement of Daniel Morgan as "surviving grandchildren." It therefore appears that Eliza and Josephine may have died prior to the settlement of Daniel's estate in 1886.

Rueben married Susan Neal on 25 Feb 1857 in Jasper County, Texas. Susan was born before 1837 in Louisiana; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

His name was listed on the Decatur GA census EXTRACT as Oliver, in error.

Carolyn Lockhart wrote that it was her understanding that Owen had never been married. Jo Ann Lee Gartig concurred, writing that "In following Owen through all the census records from GA to TX, I do not believe that Owen ever married because he was mentally retarded in some way. Decatur Co, 1850 Owen was 16 (and it read "Owen" on that microfilm because that is how I copied it before I ever saw "Oliver" on your paper). Jasper County census of 1860 Owen is 24 and listed as "domestic." 1870 Jasper County census clearly listed Owen, 38 as "idiot." 1880 Jasper County census shows Owen, 45, single, and brother to Dorcus. Ruby Boyett Burkett wrote that Owen was able to help his father with farming, so was not likely retarded. She understood that he did suffer seizures of some sort, and never married.

At the time of the 1860 census, Duncan Morgan (Daniel's brother) had two young men with the last name of Morgan listed as "Domestics" in his home. Nan McCoy Kittell says these two family members were actually slaves, and not family members Could the same be true for this Daniel/David Morgan? Maybe this is why he is not listed with the family after the Civil War, and also why he is not listed as a heir.

He was a Physician, married to 46 year old Allie Morgan, and father of John Morgan, a teacher age 25, and Hazel, age 16. Living in their household was a black household servant, 13 year old Sam Morris of Louisiana.

Kenneth Morgan recounts that his grandfather, "Tom Morgan was a big practical joker, and would go to great lengths to pull off a stunt. Once he and his brother, Eddie, were digging a well. In those days, wells were hand dug, and measured about four by four foot. Eddie was down in the well digging, while Tom reeled up buckets of dirt from the top. The well was deep enough now that a man couldn't climb out of it, and would have to have the other person haul him up with the rope.

Tom called down to Eddie, telling him to rest a minute, that he was going to get them some water. Eddie asked to be hauled up, but Tom said, no, he'd just be a minute. Eddie protested, telling Tom that Dollie, their blind mule, might wander over and fall in on top of him. Tom said no, I see her way across the field, and I'll be back before she could make it this far.

Tom promptly set out, but instead of going towards the house, he ran over to where Dolly was, pulling the bell off that always hung round her neck. Then slowly, he began circling the well. Tom meandered slowly, extending the pleasure of this trick, gradually circling in, ringing the bell. Eddie's voice grew more anxious and strained as he talked to the mule, trying to coax her away from the well.

When Tom got right up to the edge of the well, he kicked some dirt down. Eddie responded with "Whoa, you son of a bitch!" At this point, Tom could no longer contain his laughter and rolled on the ground in pleasure at his feat. Eddie, quickly realizing that his brother had pulled another stunt, told Tom that as soon as he got out of the well, he was going to kill him.

Needless to say, Tom left Eddie in the well for quite a while to simmer down before he finally lowered the rope to haul him out."

Kenneth further reported that his grandfather farmed most of his life until he became so crippled he could not walk at age sixty-nine. He remained cheerful until his death at eighty-five, and was dragged around the house and porch in a straight-chair by his grandmother, Jane Valentine Garsee Morgan. For many years he had a team of small mules named "Kit" and "Queen."

Nan Kittell could find no further record of William McLemore after 1860, and presumed he did not survive the Civil War.

In the Fall 1998 issue of the Red River County Texas Genealogical Society, a list is included of "the John C. Burkes Camp # 656 of the United Confederate Veterans was established in Red River County, Texas in the summer of 1890. This organization met yearly, usually in August, on campgrounds that were located about one mile northeast of Clarksville. It eventually became a four or five day affair with dancing, ball games, food, music, carnival attractions and patriotic speeches. It disbanded after the last Confederate Veteran member died and the campground was sold June 23, 1942. The actual list was found in the RRCTGS files and was transcribed from original records that were in poor condition. The listing includes a W.H. McLemore

There is a William H. McLemore, parents unknown born, on a WorldConnect Tree on RootsWeb that is connected to Red River county. If the tree is accurate, he was actually born in Red River County versus Georgia, so he would not be the same William McLemore as our son of John and Sarah.

There is at least one other William McLemore was was a veteran of the Civil War, as he is buried in Austin and not in the Woodland Graveyard in Norht Texas. Tom McLemore emailed Melinda Strong on June 9, 2003 that "Last week Bonnie and I were in Austin....(and) we stopped at the Texas State Cemetery which is on 7th Street, near downtown. There is a veteran of the Civil War by the name of William McLemore buried there in a section reserved for veterans of that war. I wonder if it might be the McLemore that Nan Kittrel mentioned to you. I don't remember any other details like date of death."

However, this William buried in Austin could be yet another William McLemore of around the same age as the William McLemore who was a son of John and Sarah (Morgan) McLemore.

Finn's middle name could have been Fenton (based on a poll tax receipt from Jasper) or Finerel (based on the middle name of his son, Rufus) or Finn, as he was commonly called.

At the time of the 1880 census, he was widowed, and living in the home of his in-laws with his young daughter.

He was a farmer. On the 1900 Sabine County census, he is shown in household 22, next to the Henry S. White family, his wife's brother. Household 36 is that of Thomas E. McLemore, his half brother.

Finn died in at the home of his son, Vessie McLemore. Vessie and Nina had been caring for him. Granddaughter Evon remembers she and some cousins going out into the woods to gather wildflowers for him while her father built a coffin. Her father and his brothers took the coffin by cart to the Gravel Hill cemetery a few days later.

Susan Amanda "Mandy" Morgan married William Claud when she was approximately 39 years old, and was stepmother to his three grown children from a prior marriage. The 1910 census indicates that she herself was the mother of 1 child, but the space indicating whether or not this child was still living was left blank. As no child under the age of 11 was listed on the census, it appears likely to have died young.

At the 1920 census, they were still in Jasper, but now in JP 3, ED 75. Only William's oldest daughter was still at home, but she was listed as Maggie, age 42, instead of as Sarah.

Mandy was widowed prior to the 1930 census. At that time, she is living in Jasper, along with her older sister, Mary Morgan, who appears to have been a lifelong spinster.

Mrs. Mary Matilda Hawthorne, 80, of Roganville died at her home Friday evening following a brief illness of pneumonia. Mrs. Hawhorne was a pioneer settler of Jasper County, coming here from Decatur, Georgia with her family when a small girl. She married J.T. Hawthorne here in 1871 and survived him by about a year.

This couple were the parents of 14 children all now living. Thirteen of the children were at her bedside when death came. A daughter, Mrs. Martha Norburg, of Ashland, Oregon, failed to arrive in time.

Mrs. Hawthorne was a devoted mother and a sincere neighbor in the community where she spent her life. She was active in church work, having been a member of the Primitive Baptist Church for the past 45 years. She took an interest in civic and educational affairs.

She is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Lula West of Kirbyville, Mrs. Ola Jones of Roganville, Mrs. Hattie Martin of Vidor, Mrs. Lizzie Hooks of Bleakwood, Mrs. Leachie Day of Newton, and Mrs. Norburg; eight sons, F.P., J.C., J.T., and Walter all of Kirbyville; Sion, Polk, Tommy and Zora all of Roganville, 96 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the Friendship cemetery near Roganville at 3 pm Saturday, with the Rev. S.D. Newton of Orange, the Rev. A.J. Dubois of Jasper, and the Rev. Leonard Richardson and Rev. Audrey Richardson of Buna officiating. Burial will be under the direction of the Stringer funeral home of Jasper.

An "Allie" Morgan was an heir Daniel Morgan in 1886. Additionally, an Alice A MORGAN married J.W. Foster on 8 Dec 1886 in Newton county, Texas (Ancestry.com-Texas Marriages, 1851-1900). It is not known if this is the same person.

At the time of the 1880 census, Josephine was living with John McLemore, the husband of her deceased Aunt, Sarah Morgan. She was listed as 14 year old Josephine Wilson, presumably having been adopted by her mother's second husband.

In her letter of 12 September 1999 to Melinda Strong, Jo Ann Lee Gartig wrote:

"Tim began his working life as a teamster, age 17 (where on the Jasper County 1880 Federal census he was boarding with Newton B. Jones) in the logging camps of Jasper County, along the Neches River between Kirbyville and Buna. A few years later he was engineer of the Texas Tram, a logging train which ran through the Neches River "bottom" near Buna and Ten Acre Lake. He went to San Antonio to earn $50 so that he could marry. At age 27, on October 6, 1886, Tim married Emily Ann Westbrook. The marriage took place at Tram Town, Jasper County. Two sons were born in Tram Town and both died in infancy. The couple took each infant in turn to be buried at Farr's Chapel, Farrsville, Newton County, Texas. Emily Ann's family lived at Farrsville.

On October 10, 1896, (at) age 37, Tim Lee was ordained by the Council of the South East Texas Free Will Baptist Association as a Free Will Baptist Minister. He was Minister of Erin Free Will Baptist Church, Erin Community, Jasper County. Throughout the years of his ministry, he was a circuit minister and one of the several churches that he traveled to preach in was Farr's Chapel.

At age 38, the family moved to Kirbyville, Jasper County and built their "dog-trot" home. This was one of the first homes built in Kirbyville when Mr. Kirby was marking off lots for homesites. The seventh child, Lela Lanine was the first born in the new house...(and) the remaining children were all born in this home.

Tim went to work for Mr. Kirby, owner of Kirby Lumber Company, as a timber evaluator. He was called a "log scaler" and measured amount of timber with a log scaling stick. For a while he was engineer for a log train and worked at night reparing engines in the engine shop. Tim worked for Kirby for many years until the lumber company burned in 1917. Then he went to work for Trout Creek Lumber Company as a night watchman at age 58. This lumber mill was located behind the old Kirbyville school building and near Tim's house. In October, 1927, age 67, Tim attended the 38th annual session of South East Texas Free Will Baptist Association at the Friendship Church near Roganville. He also attended the 39th annual session at Cairo Springs and in 1930 he attended the session at North Zulch, Madison County, Texas.

In 1931, Tim was 71 years old and still employed as a night watchman at the Trout Creek Lumber Mill in Kirbyville. He died of pneumonia, April 16, 1931 at home. Services were held at the family home and Tim was buried in Kirbyville Cemetery.

Chester Lee recounted to his daughter that "The old pendulum clock the family owned was won by Tim. A Kirbyville store owner offered the clock as a prize to the man who paid up his bill. Poppa owed 50 cents and paid up."

Henry Louis Morgan was born on December 3, 1881, the fourth child and third son of a family of six boys and one girl. His father was Malachi L. Morgan (b. March 24, 1852-d. June 11, 1906), who was born, lived, died, and is buried in East Texas. His mother was Mary West Morgan (b. December 27, 1854-d. July 22, 1905), who, like her husband, was born and lived out her life in East Texas.

After enjoying some twenty years of retirement, Henry Louis Morgan died in 1966, at age 84, and is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Beaumont. Maggie Morgan passed away on May 9, 1984, at age 93, and is buried beside her husband. They are still fondly recalled and sorely missed by their five children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a host of friends whose lives they touched.
