    Ocie Felts Gomer

    Ocie Felts Gomer was born Jan. 21, 1905, at Sabinetown, Sabine County. She died on Nov. 27, 2005, at San Augustine. Ocie was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson FELTS and Mattie Bell BURKETT FELTS. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley S. GOMER Sr.; her daughter, Helen Gomer SCHLUTER; her parents; and 11 brothers and sisters. Ocie is survived by her two sons, Edgar R. "Bill" GOMER and wife Mae of Salt Lake City, Utah and Stanley S. GOMER Jr. and wife Wanda of Burleson, nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews in Sabine County and elsewhere. Stanley and Ocie were married Dec. 23, 1922, at Hemphill and went to California by train where Stanley was employed by a nursery and Ocie was employed as a cook for the work crew. Later Stanley found employment with the U.S. Post Office in Los Angeles and transferred to Ft. Worth in 1925. They made the trip from California in a Model T Ford, camping out each night with infant daughter, Helen. The trip took three weeks. They lived in Fort Worth until retirement and in 1962 moved back to Sabine County to live on Toledo Bend Lake. Stanley died in 1986 and Ocie continued to live by the lake until she suffered a heart attack and she then moved to Hemphill Care Center and from there to Trinity Rehab and Retirement Community in San Augustine. Ocie was a loving mother and grandmother. She was very independent and self-sufficient, a good fisherman, and a really good cook. She will be missed. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill. Interment followed at Hemphill City Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Starr Funeral Home Inc in Hemphill.

    Ocie married Stanley Sheldon Gomer on 23 Dec 1922 in Hemphill, Sabine County, Texas. Stanley (son of Joshua Gomer and Winnie Luthenia "Thena" McDaniel) was born on 26 Nov 1902 in Texas; died on 19 Feb 1986 in Tarrant County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    ORA FELTS HARPER

    Ora Felts Harper, 95, of Hemphill died at 7:25 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Webster Regional Medical Center in Webster. Mrs. Harper, born April 21, 1907, was a native and longtime resident of Sabine County. She was a homemaker. Survivors: son-in-law, William L. FARROW and wife Sherri of League City; granddaughters, Teresa Farrow DeVAULT and Laci FARROW both of League City, and a sister, Ocie GOMER of Fort Worth. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Cynthia PAYTON officiating. Interment followed at the City Cemetery in Hemphill.     Eula Mae Wood

    Funeral services for Eula Mae Wood, 95, of Hemphill were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2007 at Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Harper's Chapel Cemetery. Rev. Ricky Wood officiated and Gregg Wood did the Eulogy. She died at 3:15 a.m. at the Sabine County Hospital in Hemphill. Eula Mae Wood was born in Sabinetown on June 22, 1011 to Walter FELTS and Lina GOOCH Felts. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hemphill.

    She is survived by her sons, Vilas "Boog" WOOD and wife, Linda of San Augustine and Mike WOOD and wife, Sue Ann of Hemphill; daughter, Lexie Mae McCARTER of Tyler; brother, Shay FELTS of Hemphill; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

    Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill was in charge of arrangements.

    Earnest C. "Buddy" Felts

    Services for Earnest C. "Buddy" Felts, 88, of Hemphill were held at 10 am Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at the Starr Funeral Home chapel in Hemphill with Pastor Sherry Z. Crenshaw and Pastor Fred Raney officiating. Interment followed at Hemphill City Cemetery.

    Felts was born June 8, 1913 in Sabine County and died at 2 am Sunday March 24, 2002 in Hemphill.

    He was a lifelong resident of Sabine County and a member of the Free Methodist Church. He was a retired truck drive for J.O. Toole.

    Survivors: wife, Dorothy Felts of Hemphill; sons and daughters-in-law , Ronnie and Ona Felts of Hemphill, Larry and Frances Felts of Lufkin, and Davis and Connie Felts of Hemphill; daughters and son-in-law, Janie* and Jimmy Emiston of Tyler and Vickie Felts** of Hemphill; a brother, Davis D. "Shay" Felts of Hemphill; sister, Eula Wood of Hemphill; 15 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

    Shay Delon Davis Felts, 96, died Saturday morning in the Hemphill Care Center. He was born in Sabinetown, TX, to Walter Elbert and Caroline Gooch Felts. Shay worked for Gulf Oil as a machinist for over 35 years. After retirement he moved back to Hemphill from Port Arthur. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Hemphill Post VFW, and the First United Methodist Church in Hemphill. Mr. Felts is survived by his step-daughter Patsy Reed of Sonoma, AZ, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wives, Thelma Juanita Duddie Felts and Rebecca Evelyn Felts; two brothers, E.C. Buddy Felts and Benton Peanut Felts; his sisters Eula Wood and Lola Smith. Visitation will be from 5:00PM until 8:00 PM, Monday, January 30, 2012, in the Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, TX.     Lola B. Smith, 76, of Geneva died Monday, April 22, 1996, at Nacogdoches Medical Center Hospital in Nacogdoches.

    Born March 26, 1920 in Sabinetown as a daughter of the late Walter and Lana (Gooch) Felts, she was a longtime resident of Geneva and a member of Geneva United Methodist Church. Mrs. Smith was a retired teacher with the Geneva and Sexton schools.

    Survivors: husband, Carl Smith of Geneva; two daughters, Karen Fountain of Fred and Cathy Durrett of Lubbock; a son, Jay Smith of Chireno; a sister Eula Wood of Hemphill; two brothers, Shay Felts and Buddy Felts, both of Hemphill; and six grandchidlren, Leigh Ann Fountain, Ryan Durrett, Adam Smith, Eric Smith, Kara Fountain, and Mandy Durrett.

    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. Aldous Smith and Bro. W. Clarence Howell officiating. Interment was in Myrtle Springs Cemetery in Geneva.

    Helen Gomer Schluter, 78, of Alvarado died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at an Alvarado care center.

    She was born March 12, 1924, in Los Angeles, California, and had been a longtime resident of Fort Worth, where she had moved in 1926.

    Mrs. Schluter was a descendant of several Republic of Texas settlers and was the organizing president of the James F. Gomer Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, in Hemphill. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Dames, and several other genealogy clubs and organizations. Her passion was genealogy and she gathered much historical information concerning Sabine County.

    She was married first to Aldon M. Sellers of Bluff Dale, and then to Orra J. Schluter of Baraboo, Wisc., in July 1961.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Orra J. Schluter.

    Survivors: mother, Ocie Gomer of San Augustine; sons, Michael Sellers and wife Linda of Alvarado and Morris "Rusty" Sellers and wife Ramona of Pineville, La.; daughter, Melinda K. Sellers of Westminister, Colorado; grandchildren, Jacob Morton, Jill Clark, Andrew Sellers, Holly Sellers, Sean Williams, Michael Sellers, and Robert Sellers; brothers Edgar R. "Bill" Gomer and wife Mae of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Stanly S. Gomer, Jr. and wife Wanda of Burleson; great grandchildren, Zachary, Haley, Austin, Logan, and Treyvor; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    Graveside rites are set for 9:30 am today (Wednesday) at Mount Olivet Memorial Cemetery in Fort Worth.

    Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association or the Alzheimers Association.

    Vilas "Boog" Wood

    Funeral services for Vilas "Boog" Wood, 74, of San Augustine, will be held at 10:00 a.m., today, June 25, 2009 at Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Liberty Hill Memorial Garden in San Ausgustine in San Augustine with Bro. Buddy Pratt and Bro. Bob Gwinn officiating. He died in San Augustine on June 2, 2009.

    Vilas "Boog" Wood was born in Hemphill on January 29, 1935 to Luther Wood and Eula Felts. He is a retired mechanic for Tyson Food, he worked there for 50 years. He served in the U. S. Army and was a member of the Liberty Hill Baptist Church.

    He is survived by his wife, Lynda Wood of San Augustine; sons, Ricky Wood and wife Connie of Humble and Greg Wood and wife Felica of San Augustine; daughters, Shelley Dailey and husband Richard and Rebecca Wood Whitton, all of San Augustine; eight grandchildren; brother Mike Wood of Hemphill and sister Lexie "Sis" McCarter of Tyler.

    Condolences can be offered at Wyman Roberts website. Wyman Roberts Funeral Home in San Augustine was in charge of the arrangements.

    Everest Luther "Dee" Wood, Sr., 68, of Hemphill died Monday, May 21, 2007 at his residence.

    He was born July 13, 1938 to Luther Wood and Eula Mae Felts and had lived in Hemphill his entire life. He was in maintenance at Temple-Inland and was of the Baptist faith.

    Survivors: wife, Ruby Wood of Hemphill, mother Eula Wood of Hemphill; sons, Everest "Dickie" L. Wood and wife, Lisa, of Friendswood, John C. Webb and wife, Gail of Bronson, Thomas M. Webb and wife, Debbie of Deweyville, and Carl M. Webb, Jr. of Hemphill; daughter Cindy A. Ponder of Hemphill; brothers, Vilas "Boog" Wood of San Augustine, and Mike Wood of Hemphill; sister, Lexie McCarter of Tyler; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Thursday, May 24 from 4 to 9 p.m.

    Excerpts from the obituary of Janie Felts Edmiston

    Carolyn Jane "Janie" Felts Edmiston, 60, of Flint moved from life on this earth to the joy of Heaven on Wednesday, July 21, 2004. Janie was born March 17, 1944 in Hemphill to E.C. "Buddy" and Dorothy Felts. She was the second of five children. She graduated from Hemphill High School where she was a majorette. She married the love of her life, Jim Edmiston, on Sept. 1, 1973. Together they moved to Flint in 1977 to continue to raise their blended family.

    Janie was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister.....exceptional quilter...gardener....diehard football fan...fisherwoman...Sunday School teacher for many years.....

    She was a spitfire with a zest for life that could not be squelched and fought pancreatic cancer with all her faith and will and might.

    Preceded in death by her father, E. C. "Buddy" Felts and a son, Tony Edmiston. Survivors, Jim Edmiston, sons Jimmy STRICKLAND, Jr., his wife Bobbie and children Justin and Robin DUCK; Marc Edmiston and children, Michael, Dustin, Alan, Brian and Blake; and a daughter, Anna BEAUDIN and children Justin and Samantha. Also....her mother, Dorothy Jean (Maund) Felts of Hemphill; and siblings, Ronnie Felts and wife Ona Lee of Hemphill; Larry Felts and wife Francis of Lufkin, Vickie Felts of Hemphill, and Dascom "Dave" Felts and wife Connie of Hemphill.
