Johann Adam Schlott

Notes:

In a letter dated August 9, 1935, written by A.D. Hiller, Executive Assistant to the Administrator, Veterans Administration, Washington, it was noted that Adam Schlott of York County was a pensioner of the Revolutionary War.

The Revolutionary War Record which follows was obtained from the papers on file in pension claim, W.2870, based upon his service in that war.

"John Adam Schlott was born on 26 December 1761 in "Hessee Cassele", Middelsie, District of Schwartzenfeld, Germany. The names of his parents are not given.

While residing in Berks County, Pennsylvania he enlisted sometime in August 1776, and served one month as a Private in Captian John Golden's company under Colonel Dickender in the Pennsylvania troops; he immediately enlisted in the Flying Camp and served six months in Captain Jacob Bower's Company, Colonel Haller's regiment and was in the battle of White Plains.

He was allowed pension on his application executed January 8, 1833, then a resident of Windsor Township, York County, Pennsylvania, where he had moved in 1788 from Berks County. He died August 3, 1833.

John Adam Schlott married April 29, 1788, Catharina Holderrien. It is not shown where they married; the place of her birth is not given, nor are the names of her parents stated.

The soldier's widow, Catharina Schlott, was allowed pension on her application executed June 17, 1839, then aged seventy-two years, eight months and twenty-five days, and living in Windsor Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

The following are the names of their children as found in the claim:

John Migel born March 7, 1789 Elisabeda born March 3, 1791 Johannes born October 8, 1792 Kaderina born July 20, 1794 Maria born March 18, 1797 Rebecka born April 29, 1799 Sofyia born January (?) 23, 1802 Machtdelena born August 11, 1805"

In 1941, the Rev. Edward C. Ruby, D.D., prepared a paper titled "Data Concerning Several Branches of the SCHLOTT, SLOAT, FAMILIES IN THE UNITED STATES (York, Pennsylvania). He noted that Johan Adam Schlott arrived on the ship "Union" from Rotterdam, and qualified on September 30, 1774. He cites the Penna. Archives, 2nd series, 17th Vol.---Immigrants.

He further noted that the Pennsylvania census of 1790 contains the names of- Michael Slutt -1-4-4 (4 sons under 16 and three daughters) Adam Slutt -1-1-1 (1 son under 16).

His paper supports the children listed above as children of Adam and Catharina. He obtained their names and birthdates from records at the Canadochly Lutheran Church in York, Pennsylvania.

He also wrote that Adam Schlott's Will is recorded at the York County Court House. In the will, which was made on August 25, 1832, and probated on September 3, 1833, the following children were mentioned: Michael; Elizabeth, wife of Jacob Liphart; John; Catharine, wife of John Kramer; Anna Maria, wife of George Atting; Rebecca, wife of Wm. Matthias; Sophia, wife of George Dellinger; and Magdelena, wife of Adam Kromling.

The Slothower family of York County are descendants of Niclaus Schlotthauer, b. abt 1730 of Hesse Cassel, Germany and his wife Anna Elisabeth. Many of the family changed their name to Schlott and Sloat.

I come through the above Johan Michael Schlotthauer who shortened the name to Schlott.

Per SENECA COUNTY, BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES, Loudon Township. p 893 "Daniel Cramer, retired, farmer, P.O. Fostoria, was born in York County, Pennsylvania. (He was) reared in his native county, and there received a very limited common school education. He came with his parents to this county in 1838, and was actively engaged in farming up to 1867, when he retired, and now resides with his brother William on the old homestead. He is the only member of the family who has adhered to the German Lutheran Church, of which his parents were life-long members. Politically he has ever been a Democrat."

At the time of both the 1880 and 1900 census, he is listed in the household of his brother youngest brother, William, as indicated in the above biography.

Chuck Winters shows he married a Caroline UNKNOWN, b. ca. 1822.

Per BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF VAN WERT COUNTY (Ohio) "John Cramer was eighteen years of age when he accompanied his parents to Seneca County, Ohio, and had then finished his education. Until twenty-one years of age he remained on the home farm, and then engaged as a laborer in a saw-mill in Seneca County for two years, and then, in 1847, he married and bought eighty acres of land, on which he at once located and cultivated until 1864, when he came to Van Wert and bought 120 acres in Pleasant township, where he now resides and still owns 75 acres of finely improved land. The family all worship in the Methodist Episcopal faith, and in politics Mr. Cramer is a prohibitionist; he is a member of the grange No. 82, of which he was the treasurer for 14 years."

FindAGrave lists his date of birth as 9 Oct 1822, and date of death as 10 Jan 1912. A photo of an engraved double tombstone, with a second wife, Sarah J. Cramer, shows the dates as 6 Oct 1833 through 11 Jan 1912. Dean Cramer has an earlier date of death, 11 November 1905.

Was deceased as of the publication of Vol II, BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF VAN WERT COUNTY (Ohio). This agrees with the information from Dean Cramer, who says she died young. He also shows that she may also have been called Mary Ann.

According the "History of Ionia and Montcalm Counties Michigan with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of their Prominent Men and Pioneers" by John S. Schenck, Philadelphia, D.W. Ensign & Co. 1881, the first framed house in Odessa was built by Emory Russell after 1842. Other early settlers in and near the Russell neighborhood were Nelson Merrill, EMANUEL CRAMER, S.B. CHAPMAN, A.A. Haskins, A.J. Clark, P.S. Lapham, David Crapo, John D. Hight, Reuben Haight, George E. Kelly, James N. Galloway, and Asa Houghton (p. 315). It was further noted that Emanuel Cramer mustered out of the 21st From Ionia County, Michigan on June 8, 1865. The 21st was commanded by Col. Ambrose A. Stevens, Boston and Lieut.-Col. Morris B. Wells, Ionia. Col Stevens was released from service on Feb. 3, 1863 due to a disability. Lieut.-Col. Wells was killed at Chickamuaga on that same day. (pp. 74-75).


The "History of Ionia County, Michigan, her people, industries and...., Volume 2" by Elam E. Brach and EarlW. De La Vergne notes that he enlisted in Company A, Twenty-first regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry in August, 1862 and mustered out in June 1865 at the rank of corporal. This book also indicated that Emanuel Cramer was a carpenter and many of the buildings erected in the southern part of the county in pioneer days were built by him.

Per SENECA COUNTY, BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES Loudon Township p 894 "Adam Cramer, sexton of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Fostoria...was reared in Loudon Township from eleven years of age, and received a limited education in the schools of his times. On reaching maturity, he began to work as a journeyman carpenter, which trade he followed up to the breaking out of the late war of the Rebellion. In July, 1861, he enlisted in Company B, Fifty-fifth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered into the service in August following. He veteranized in same company and regiment January 1, 1864; was in the battle of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Missionary Ridge, siege of Atlanta, siege of Savannah, and in many other engagements, and lost a leg at Averysboro, North Carolina, March 16, 1865, and received an honorable discharge at Columbus, Ohio, August 13, 1865. In August, 1870, he was appointed postmaster of Fostoria, which position he held 10 years. Since the spring of 1883 he has been sexton of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Fostoria...he had five children of whom three survived...he is a member of the G.A.R.. Politically he is a Republican."

It appears he is a child of John and Catherine, based both on the biography of his eldest brother, Daniel, and the fact that Daniel lived with him in 1880, and was listed as his brother.

Sophia married Peter Wickerham on 13 Oct 1856. Peter was born about 1825 in Ohio; died on 19 Aug 1889 in Ohio; was buried in Union Cemetery, West Independence, Hancock County, Ohio. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Avis Smith had the following comments about her grandmother: "Sara Cramer was from a Pennsylvania Dutch family. She was a widow and had two sons that had died. Her parents were farmers and congregationalists. They had lived in Finley, Ohio before the family moved to Lake Odessa, Michigan. She was a descendant of a Revolutionary War soldier. When married to Augustus Eliot, they had three daughters: Ida, Flora, and Ellen."

Augustus Elliott's pension application, as well as her widow's application, state that she had never been married before. Avis's other grandmother, Mary Ann Smith, was twice widowed. Perhaps this is who she was thinking of. Sarah and Augustus did have two sons who died young, and another son who appears to have been stillborn. This might also account for the discrepency in Avis's recollections.

At the time of the 1860 census, she was living in the home of her elder brother, Henry Cramer. She was listed as a "domestic" apparently helping her sister-in-law care for the home and children.

Augustus (son of Joseph Elliott and Elender Kenny) was born on 18 Apr 1838 in Washington, Rappahannock County, Virginia; died on 2 Nov 1921 in Grand Ledge, Eaton County, Michigan; was buried on 7 Nov 1921 in Lakeside Cemetery, Lake Odessa, Ionia County, Michigan. Notes:

This might be the John E. Cramer who shares a tombstone with Libbie Cramer Shaffner and Cora E. Cramer at the Fountain Cemetery in Fostoria, Ohio. The dates for John that were inscribed are Oct. 15 1850?/?1858? through April 15, 1892.

Cramer of Chicago, who was the author of "The Family of Johan Helfer Cramer (Revolutionary War Pension W-2762) With Historical Background." Clarence reported that his father's estimate of his forebears could be summarized as follows: "The Cramers --- They all owned their own farms, lived to an old age, were exceedingly strong charactered people, raised large families, good Christians, never had a divorce or lawsuit in their history."

"Frank A. Cramer was nine years old when his parents came to Pleasnt township and settled on the farm which is located just outside the city limits of Van Wart. He remained on the family homestead until he was 21 years of age, and in the meantime acquired a good common-school education. He then passed several years away from home, traveling over about 14 States, working at various occupations and having many adventures; but when he found himself 1,000 miles from home, with only three cents in his pocket, he wisely decided to return to that safe harbor as soon as possible. he met witha ready and hearty welcome, and while not desiring to become a farmer, found this a fine and locality in which to learnt the carpenter's trade, and, for the past 12 years has been a leader at Van Wert in the building and contracting line. Prior to entering into business for himself, he worked for 13 years of one employer. About 1901 he built his own shop on Jackson street, whihc is a commodious establishment two stories in height, with dimensions of 48 by 50 feet. Mr. Cramer gives employment to from 12 to 15 ment, and has successfully carried through a number of very large contracts, at present erecting a $30,000 structure for the Central Manufacturers' Mutual Insurance Company, the finest building ever erected in the city.

In 1882 Mr. Cramer was married to Kate P. Harris, daughter of Elijah and Ann Harris, of this county, and they have two children-Hazel and Milo. He is the owner of a beautiful family residence at No. 314 North Jefferson street, which he built, and now occupies; has a half interest in three other dwellings; is administrator of his father's estate, and is comtemplating the platting of the old homestead farm.

Politically Mr. Cramer is a Republican. Fraternally he is a Mason and an Odd Fellow; religiously he is connected with the Methodist Episcopal Church and is one of the stewards.

They were Lake Odessa residents about 40 years ago. Mrs. John Herbert and Mrs. Albert Hodges of Ionia are sisters of the deceased. Funeral services were held at Grand Ledge, Wednesday. LaVonne Bennett located the following death record for Charles Elliott in Ionia County Death Records: Liber C, page 658, d 7-8-1939, age 71 yrs, 3 mo, 7 days, single marital status, informant Mrs. W. B. Smith of Grand Ledge. He died at 5017 Taylor Street, Grd Ledge, where he'd lived 25 years. He was born 4-1-1868 in Fostoria, OH, to A. E. and Sarah (Cramer) Elliott, both born in OH. He died of general arterio sclerosis, burial in Lake Odessa.

GRAND LEDGE INDEPENDENT, MI, Thurs., July 13, 1939. DEATH NOTICES - Charles W. Elliott, aged 71 years, passed away Saturday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Smith, 501 Taylor Street. He was the son of A.E. and Sarah Elliott and was born April 1, 1868, at Fostoria, Ohio. He came with his parents to Grand Ledge from Lake Odessa in 1904. Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. W. B. Smith with whom he lived, Mrs. John Herbert of Lake Odessa, and Mrs. Bert Hodges of Ionia. The body was taken to the Teman Funeral Home where private funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, Rev. A. R. Gold, officiating. Interment in Lakeside Cemetery, Lake Odessa."
