Notes:

Clarence E. Cramer, in his 1943 manuscript "The Family of Johan Helfer Cramer..", states that Sophia was a "daughter of Johann and Elixabetha Neidig. On page 5 it was noted that Johann Adam Neidig arrived at Philadelphia August 11, 1732, and took the Oath of Allegiance. Perhaps this man was Sophia's grandfather, but certainly the Neidig family was well established as American Colonial citizens prior to Sophia's birth. The 1783 tax records listed John Neidig in Codorus Township with "4 inhabitants." It is probable the Neidig family consisted of the parents John and Elizabeth, sister Barbara, and Sophia..." (p. 52).

FTM CD #196 lists Henrietta and her sisters Elisabetha Margaretha and Maria and their parents, Johannes Neidig & Elisabetha ???. All baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County, PA

Dean Cramer speculates that Johannes could be the son of EITHER Joerg Adam Neidig born about 1706 in Germany, and father of Daniel b 1726 Germany m. Anna Margaretha d 1780 in New Hanover, PA; Johannes b. 1730 Germany; Adam b. 1730 Germany married Anna Barbara d aft 1780 PA; Leonhart b 1736 Germany m Elizabeth Fleck d aft 1788 PA---OR George Adam Neidig b. 18 Dec 1712, Horrenberg Germany arrived Philadelphia 16 Sept 1748 on the "Patience", Lutheran, m. 1 Maria Magdalena Lederer at Allfred, Germany Sept 1736 m 2 Dorethea ??? and had children Anna Elizabeth b 9 June 1751, York PA; Mathais b 9 Mar 1753 PA, Peter and John George

Both newspaper articles were originally transcribed by Clarence E. Cramer in his 1943 manuscript about the Cramer family.

Her tombstone read:

Hier ruhen die Gebeine von Sophia Cramer eine gebohre Neudig, Sie starb den 20sten November, 1839. In einem Alter von 78 Jahr, 2 Monate und 4 tagen. Sept 16 1761 - Nov 20, 1839 78 years, 2 months, 4 days. The inscriptions on the stone were copied by the Reverend Doctor Paul D. Yoder and Clarence E. Cramer, sometime prior to the 1943 publication of his manuscript about the family of Johann Helfer Cramer.

Edith Beard Cannon, in her "Genealogical Reports for The Historical Society of York County, Vol. XXIX, page 49, Evidence of the Cramer Families of York before the year 1850 REVISED" published 1943, shows an Administration Bond (SN, 155) was filed August 6, 1840 for the Estate of Sophia Cramer of Codorus Township, Henry Cramer, administrator. This book is lost. On Page 67 of her book, she has the following information that appears to have been related to his revolutionary pension"

State of Pennsylvania, York County, Personally appeared before me the Subcriber a Justice of the peace in and for said County Francis SHAFER and Henry CRAUMER Credible Witnesses who being by me duly sworn According to law saith that Sophia CRAUMER the Widow of Helfer CRAUMER a United States pensioner of York County Pa. died in York County on the 20 day of November Annon Domini 1839 and that Christian CRAUMER and John CRAUMER & Julian WERNER and Henry CRAUMER and Margaret SHAFER and Lorence CRAUMER are the only sons and Daughters of Sophia CRAUMER deceased and Legitimate Heirs 1840. Henrietta married Johann Helfer Cramer on 5 Apr 1785 in York County, Pennsylvania. Johann (son of Daniel Cramer and Anna Margaretha Schmidt) was born on 22 Sep 1753 in York County, Pennsylvania; died on 22 Sep 1833 in York County, Pennsylvania; was buried in Saint Jacobs (Stone) Union Church, Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania. Surname also spelled Neitig. Clarence E. Cramer writes that "Barbara was born September 15, 1762, being a year the younger. Barbara married Helfer's War-intimate, Andrew FINFROCK, on November 10 or 16, 1785, by the Reverend Schroeder, and died January 14, 1841. Finfrock was born October 25, 1753, just a month younger than Helfer, and died June 30, 1836. Both are buried in The Stone Church Cemetery, a few feet from Helfer and Sophia, and a Revolutionary War Emblem adorns Finfrock's grave." (p. 52). They had at least two children who are buried at The Stone Church: John B. Finfrock, 21 Oct 1792-8 Sep 1863; and Christina Finfrock, 21 Dec 1800-17 Mar 1864. (p. 57).

Cramer later elaborated on Finfrock's war service (p. 59), transcribing information from H. J. Young's "In The American Revolution: A Source Book," MS., Red Series, page 165. "The Pension Papers of Andrew Finfrock of Codorus Township, Claim W-2770, state that the Pensioner was married November 10 of 16, 1785, to Barbara Neitig by the Reverend Mr. Schroeder; that on December 12, 1832, George Kreps and Helfer Craumer swore that they saw him in the Army as a soldier at Fort Lee, where he was detained as a guard until the fall of Fort Washington on November 16, 1776." The pension bureau granted Finfrock a pension on this affadavit. All Muster Rolls were lost or destroyed for that expedition.

Appears to have died young, as a namesake sister was born in 1790. Dean Cramer, in his notes, shows that she died in 1786, the year of her birth. Clarence Cramer shows that her baptismal sponsors were Johann and Elisabestha Neudig, her maternal grandparents., and that she died in infancy, likely buried in an unmarked grave at the Stone Church.

He also states that "she evidently lived a few years of more, and was probably buried in an unmarked grave at the Stone Church." Unlike more contemporary family researchers, he does not reference a marriage between Catharina and Jacob Werner.

Clarence Cramer indicates that his baptismal sponsors were Christian and Christine RUHLMAN. He said that after his marriage, Christian and Catharina lived near the Stone Church. He moved to Fostoria, Ohio, in 1837. (p. 57).

Dean Cramer writes that he lived on Uncle Daniel's farm next to Helfer. Moved to farm in Fostoria, Ohio. Dean thinks that Christian's 9 children were probably born in Fostoria, and lived mostly in Indiana. The source for most of Christian's descendants was Louis Haley

On the 1850 federal census, in South Codorus, York County, Pennsylvania there is a listing for Jacob Werner (age 34), who is enumerated with a Margaret Werner (age 32), and children Adam (age 7), Daniel (age 6), Matilda (age 4), and John (age 2). Living in the household is a female named JULIAN WERNER, age 57 (born ca 1793). Could this be Juliana Cramer Werner? She and Jacob were said to be the parents of a Jacob Werner, born ca 1817, among others.

Juliana married Jacob Werner on 7 Apr 1808 in St. Matthew's Church, Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania. Clarence E. Cramer writes that his baptismal sponsors were his maternal grandparents, Johann and Elisabetha Neidig. He was named in honor of Johann(es) Neudig. He indicated that after his marriage, he and Catharina lived near the Stone Church. He moved to Fostoria, Ohio sometime between 1837 and 1840...(with) printed records for each of these dates, as well as Family tales. (P. 57).

Edith Beard Cannon, in "Genealogical Reports for The Historical Society of York County, Vol. XXIX, p. 52, Evidence of the Cramer Families of York before the year 1850 REVISED" published 1843, cited the following deed:

(3A, 29) December 26, 1814. Johannes Cramer of Shrewsbury Township, yeoman; to John KOLLER: for $1.50: lot 18 in Shrewsbury town.

According to the "Biographical History of Van Wert County (Ohio), Volume II" John Cramer Sr came to Ohio in 1840 and settled on a farm in Seneca County, where he died June 29, 1856, his wife having departed September 16, 1854. They were both members of the German Lutheran Church, and in politics, Mr. Cramer was a democrat. He had served in the war of 1812 as a captain, and was an honored man in his community, where he left a fair fortune. (p. 154) In the book "Seneca County, Biographical Sketches" it says that John and Catherine (Slote) Cramer settled in Loudon Township, Seneca County, in 1838, and purchased 160 acres of land, most of which they cleared and improved and where they lived; here the father died in 1855, in his sixty fifth year; and the mother in 1854, in her sixty second year. According to Dean Cramer, John donated some of his own land for the Cramer Cemetery in Fostoria, Ohio.

Johannes married Catharina Schlott about 1816 in York County, Pennsylvania. Catharina (daughter of Johann Adam Schlott and Anna Maria Catharina Holder) was born on 20 Jul 1794 in York County, Pennsylvania; was christened on 21 Sep 1794 in Lower Windsor Twp, York County, Pennsylvania; died on 16 Sep 1854 in Seneca County, Ohio. Dean Cramer shows that she married Franz Schaffer, and that they were the parents of six daughters, Christina Anna (b. 1820), Mary Magdalena (b. 1824), Elizabeth and Margretha (twins, b. 1827 at both buried at Saint Jacobs Cemetery in York, PA), Rachel (b. 1829) and Catherina (b. 1831). Chuck Winter and Clarence Cramer both show her spouse as Francis Shaffer, an anglicized version of the name. Edith Beard Cannon's 1843 genealogy of the Cramer family, references a legal document referring to her as Margaret SHAFER (p. 67). Clarence Cramer writes that they lived in the vicinity of of Shaffer's Church in York County.

Rosalie Sommer, however, shows she married Thomas Tayler, most probably in error.

Dean Cramer writes that Henry had 9 children, 8 by his first wife Eva, and one by his second wife Anna. His birth and death dates were obtained from his headstone at St. Jacob's.
FindAGrave shows that he was a lawyer, and also liked to write music.

Edith Beard Cannon notes, in "Genealogical Reports for The Historical Society of York County, Vol. XXIX, p. 49, Evidence of the Cramer Families of York before the year 1850 REVISED" published 1843, that Henry Cramer was the administrator of the estate of his mother, Sophia Cramer, of his brother Laurence/Lorentz, also in 1843; and of Elizabeth Cramer, relationship not known, of Codorus Township in 1847. Clarence E. Cramer writest that he also administered the estate of George Krebs on April 1, 1847. (page 60).

This book is lost. January 3, 1843, Henry Cramer, administrator reported that in pursuance of a Court order dated Jan. 5, 1841, the sale of the following was conducted: No. 1, containing 50 acres sold to Christian MECKLEY for $311.41 1/2; No. 2, containing 19 acres, to John ROHRBACH for $189.43 3/4; No. 3, containing 80 acres, the homestead part, to Catherine Lehman for $298.12 1/2; No. 4, containing 9 acres, to Joseph GRAYBILL for $85.81 (Orphans Court Dockets, U. 145). Helfer Cramer

HELFER CRAMER, a substancial and well-known farmer of LaGro Township, was born in York County, Penn., October 10, 1816, being the oldest son of Christian and Catharine (Wanner) Cramer, who were natives of Pennsylvania, but of German descent. Helfer received a fair education in the rude schoolhouse of early days, and at the age of nineteen years commenced learning a trade, which he followed in Darke County, Ohio, where he had located in 1839. In 1844, he came to Indiana, moving upon the site of his present home in 1850. Mr. C. has been twice married; his first wife was Maria Reniker, who survived her marriage about five years. The present Mrs. Cramer's maiden name was Christina Boomershine, a native of Darke County, Ohio. They are the parents of five children, viz:, Marry Ellen, Eliza Ann, David F., Charles H. and Margaret S. Mr. C. has spent a life of industry and usefulness, and is in possession of a handsome competence in his declining years.

JOEL CRAMER, a farmer of Dallas township, is a native of York Co., Pa., where he was born February 16, 1833, being the next youngest in a family of 9 children, born to Christian and Katherine (Warner) Cramer, who were also natives of Pennsylvania.

They removed to Seneca, Ohio, abt 1837, where they lived until their death. Joel was reared to manhood there, received a common school education, such as the facilities of those days afforded. When aout 17 years of age he emigrated to Indiana, first settling in Wabash, with the expectation of learning the carpenter's trade with his brother, remaining with him the most of the time for 3 years. Then for about 6 or 7 years his time was divided between this and Wabash County. In 1856 he permanently located at what is now Andrews, where he lived until the fall of 1869, when he removed to the farm which now he resides.

November 16, 1856, his marriage with Mary A. Shively was solemnized, and to their union 5 children were born, of whom 3 are now living: Charles E., Gilford S., and Alpheus T. The deceased children were: Laura E., who died the wife of Millard F. Millman, and William A. In January 1865, he enlisted in the service of his country; February, he was mustered in Company B, One hundred and Fifty-Third Indiana Regiment of Volunter Infantry, serving until the close of the war, and was honorably discharged at Louisville, Ky., October 1865.

Since 1869 he has made farming his occupation, and he has been very successful. He now owns 187 acres of well improved land. He and His Wife are menbers of the Methodist Episcopal Church, In Politics, he is a Republican.

Per SENECA COUNTY, BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES, Loudon Township. p 893 "Daniel Cramer, retired, farmer, P.O. Fostoria, was born in York County, Pennsylvania. (He was) reared in his native county, and there received a very limited common school education. He came with his parents to this county in 1838, and was actively engaged in farming up to 1867, when he retired, and now resides with his brother William on the old homestead. He is the only member of the family who has adhered to the German Lutheran Church, of which his parents were life-long members. Politically he has ever been a Democrat."

At the time of both the 1880 and 1900 census, he is listed in the household of his brother youngest brother, William, as indicated in the above biography.

Chuck Winters shows he married a Caroline UNKNOWN, b. ca. 1822.

Per BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF VAN WERT COUNTY (Ohio) "John Cramer was eighteen years of age when he accompanied his parents to Seneca County, Ohio, and had then finished his education. Until twenty-one years of age he remained on the home farm, and then engaged as a laborer in a saw-mill in Seneca County for two years, and then, in 1847, he married and bought eighty acres of land, on which he at once located and cultivated until 1864, when he came to Van Wert and bought 120 acres in Pleasant township, where he now resides and still owns 75 acres of finely improved land. The family all worship in the Methodist Episcopal faith, and in politics Mr. Cramer is a prohibitionist; he is a member of the grange No. 82, of which he was the treasurer for 14 years."

FindAGrave lists his date of birth as 9 Oct 1822, and date of death as 10 Jan 1912. A photo of an engraved double tombstone, with a second wife, Sarah J. Cramer, shows the dates as 6 Oct 1833 through 11 Jan 1912. Dean Cramer has an earlier date of death, 11 November 1905.

According the "History of Ionia and Montcalm Counties Michigan with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of their Prominent Men and Pioneers" by John S. Schenck, Philadelphia, D.W. Ensign & Co. 1881, the first framed house in Odessa was built by Emory Russell after 1842. Other early settlers in and near the Russell neighborhood were Nelson Merrill, EMANUEL CRAMER, S.B. CHAPMAN, A.A. Haskins, A.J. Clark, P.S. Lapham, David Crapo, John D. Hight, Reuben Haight, George E. Kelly, James N. Galloway, and Asa Houghton (p. 315). It was further noted that Emanuel Cramer mustered out of the 21st From Ionia County, Michigan on June 8, 1865. The 21st was commanded by Col. Ambrose A. Stevens, Boston and Lieut.-Col. Morris B. Wells, Ionia. Col Stevens was released from service on Feb. 3, 1863 due to a disability. Lieut.-Col. Wells was killed at Chickamuaga on that same day. (pp. 74-75).


The "History of Ionia County, Michigan, her people, industries and...., Volume 2" by Elam E. Brach and EarlW. De La Vergne notes that he enlisted in Company A, Twenty-first regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry in August, 1862 and mustered out in June 1865 at the rank of corporal. This book also indicated that Emanuel Cramer was a carpenter and many of the buildings erected in the southern part of the county in pioneer days were built by him.

Per SENECA COUNTY, BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES Loudon Township p 894 "Adam Cramer, sexton of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Fostoria...was reared in Loudon Township from eleven years of age, and received a limited education in the schools of his times. On reaching maturity, he began to work as a journeyman carpenter, which trade he followed up to the breaking out of the late war of the Rebellion. In July, 1861, he enlisted in Company B, Fifty-fifth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered into the service in August following. He veteranized in same company and regiment January 1, 1864; was in the battle of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Missionary Ridge, siege of Atlanta, siege of Savannah, and in many other engagements, and lost a leg at Averysboro, North Carolina, March 16, 1865, and received an honorable discharge at Columbus, Ohio, August 13, 1865. In August, 1870, he was appointed postmaster of Fostoria, which position he held 10 years. Since the spring of 1883 he has been sexton of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Fostoria...he had five children of whom three survived...he is a member of the G.A.R.. Politically he is a Republican."

Avis Smith had the following comments about her grandmother: "Sara Cramer was from a Pennsylvania Dutch family. She was a widow and had two sons that had died. Her parents were farmers and congregationalists. They had lived in Finley, Ohio before the family moved to Lake Odessa, Michigan. She was a descendant of a Revolutionary War soldier. When married to Augustus Eliot, they had three daughters: Ida, Flora, and Ellen."

Augustus Elliott's pension application, as well as her widow's application, state that she had never been married before. Avis's other grandmother, Mary Ann Smith, was twice widowed. Perhaps this is who she was thinking of. Sarah and Augustus did have two sons who died young, and another son who appears to have been stillborn. This might also account for the discrepency in Avis's recollections.

At the time of the 1860 census, she was living in the home of her elder brother, Henry Cramer. She was listed as a "domestic" apparently helping her sister-in-law care for the home and children.

Said to have married first Anna Maria Koller and second Catherine Stump. Anna Maria died. In November 1850, Israel was enumerated in Eden Township, Seneca County, Ohio with the family of Jesse and Julian COLER....perhaps these were his former in-laws. He is not listed with a wife, so presumably Anna Maria died before the date, probably in or after June 1850 when their daughter Anna Maria Cramer died.

Israel married Catherine Stump (b. 7 Aug 1831 in Little York, PA (sic), d. 9 Oct 1896 in Fostoria, Ohio) on 21 Mar 1854 in Little York, PA (??? or Ohio). It was a second marriage for both. Israel's first wife died in childbirth in Ohio. Israel had moved west to Fostoria, Ohio in the late 1840s, joined the 57th Ohio Volunteers when the unit was created in 1861. He mustered out in 1865 with only one furlough of a month in early 1864. Israel's unit saw action with Sherman's army in the Civil War. He served as a Quartermaster Sergeant before being promoted to Bugler First Lieutenant which is the rank he held when mustering out. After the war, Israel's occupation was a Carpenter in Fostoria according to the 1880 Census. The Danville Veteran's home documents state he had "gray eyes and fair hair."

"Joseph L. Cramer, also a native of York county, Pennsylvania, and was crippled in 1861, being unable to perform manual labor. He was one of nine children, six sons and three daughters. He learned the trade of a shoemaker, and in the fall of 1856 came to Huntington county, Indiana, settling on a farm near the village of Pleasant Plain, and there plied his craft. It was not long before he gained an enviable reputation for his skill and the thoroughness of his work, and the entire neighborhood came to him when they wanted shoes made. He would take the leather and fashion a boot or shoe from the very first step to its completion, ready for the wearer. He loved children, and it did not take the little folks long to find out that he was their friend. His shop was their headquarters and he never failed to show his appreciation of them and a deep interest in all the little affairs which make up the world of childhood, and he was a prime favorite among all the children."

Rosalie Sommer shows that he died 2 Mar 1862, rathering than mustering out. She also shows that he married Susan STEINER prior to the war.

The 1860 census shows that a Jessee L Cramer, age 28 and born in Pennsylvania, was a boarder in Wabash County, Indiana, and working as a house carpenter.

U.S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles on Ancestry.com shows that Jesse L. Cramer, of Huntington County, Indiana, enlisted on 27 Jan 1865 as a Private in Company B, Indiana 153rd Infantry Regiment on 27 Jan 1865, and mustered out on 4 Sep 1865 at Louisville, KY. This is confirmed by a 1901 biography of his nephew, posted online at the Ancestry.com Message Board for Huntington County, Indiana, notes that he took part in the late rebellion (Civil War), and "served throughout the war."

At the time of the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census, Jesse was widowed and a resident of the Marion Branch National Military Home in Grant County, Indiana. Dean Cramer shows that Jesse died in Ohio, and was buried at the National Soldier's Home Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio.
