Frederick M. "Fed" Conner

Notes:

Fed, along with his father Willis, and brothers William, John and Charles were indicted for the murders of Eli Low and Kit Smith after a short trial and based on a longstanding feud over free-ranging. Charles and Fed's trial was held first and they were found guilty. Charles was sent to prison for twenty-five years. Fed was given life in prison, but successfully appealed his case and was retried. He was again found guilty. He would never serve, however, as the jail was broken into and Willis, Fed, William and John escaped into the countryside- where they began a running war with the law enforcement of the day.
The Texas Rangers were called in to assist in arresting the Conners, but were ambushed and one Ranger, J.H. (Jim) Moore was killed. William Conner was also killed and many others were wounded. Willis, Fed and John escaped the battle. The Rangers, having suffered a grievous defeat, left Sabine County and did not return.
The people of the county, wanting to end the violence, began to pressure local officers to arrest the Conners. Eventually, a private investigator was hired and disguised as a cattle buyer went through the county looking for clues to the Conner's whereabouts. He learned that Willis and Fed's families left food and supplies for them on a trail somewhere deep in the woods. An ambush was set up and Fed Conner was killed. Willis escaped, but was killed a few weeks later, when his young grandson, a boy of twelve, was coming to give him food. The boy had been tracked and followed by a posse and in the ensuing gunfight, Willis and the boy were killed.
This sad situation finally ended the Low-Conner Feud which had divided the county for so long. For years, no one wanted to discuss what had occurred as it was simply too divisive and the families too intermingled to be considered a worthy subject of conversation. Alton Edward Conner

Alton Edward Conner, 91, of Hemphill, died Saturday, June 2, 2007, at Hemphill Care Center.

He was born Sept. 14, 1915 to Bob Conner and Ada Frances Crocket and had lived in Hemphill his entire life. He was an automotive mechanic and a U.S. Veteran of the Army and WW II.

Survivors: sons, Bob Conner of Hemphill and Ray Conner of Houston; daughter, Jackie MERRITT of Many, La; sister, Gladys JENKINS of Beaumont, 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Sunday, June 3 at Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill with Rev. I.W. Ferguson and Rev. Vance Purtell officiating. Interment followed in Springhill Cemetery.

Dollie KINDLEY, 86, of Hemphill, died Sunday, May 13, 2007 at Sabine County Hospital. She was born Nov. 18, 1920 in Hemphill to Robert CONNER and Ada Frances CONNER, and was a lifelong resident. She was a homemaker and a member of the East Mayfield Missionary Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her son, Eugene KINDLEY. Survivors: husband, Obie KINDLEY of Hemphill; Sons, Jerry KINDLEY and wife, Cheryl of Hemphill; daughter, Juanita SPEARS and husband Charles of Oklamoma City, OK; brother Alton CONNER of Hemphill, sister, Gladys JENKINS of Beaumont; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Willis Palmer Conner

Willis Palmer Conner, 83, of Pineland died Aug. 11, 1999, at his residence.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 13, 1999 at Pineland First Baptist Church with burial at Memorial Park in Jasper under the direction of Starr Funeral Home Hemphill.

Born in Hemphill, he lived in Pineland many years and was a self-employed rancher and former U.S. Postal Service rural mail carrier.

Survivors include his wife, Essie Conner of Pineland; son, W. P. "Buddy" Conner of Baytown; daughter, Charlotte Harris of Raleigh, N.C.; sister, Ima Hall of Shreveport, La.; and three grandchildren.

Robert Euell Conner, 56, passed away Wednesday night in the Lufkin Memorial Hospice in the Pines in Lufkin, Texas. Euell was born in Hemphill, to William Clifford and Florence Beatrice Johnson Conner. Euell worked as a heavy crane operator. Euell was an avid hunter and fisherman. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He was a loving husband, father, uncle, brother, and friend.

He is survived by his wife Shannion Conner of Bronson, his son Eli Conner of Bronson, his brother Pete Conner of Bronson, his sisters: Charlotte Henry of Bronson-Carroll, and Jackie Smith and husband Greg of Brookeland,Texas.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Emily Ann Conner, his brother, Mike Conner, his sister Cynthia Conner Cook.

Visitation will be from 5:00PM until 9:00PM, Friday, November 13, 2015, in the Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St. Hemphill, Texas. Funeral service will be at 10:00AM, Saturday, November 14, 2015, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Bronson Cemetery.

Lott, born July 15, 1925, in Sabine County as a son of the late Floyd and Hessie Elisabeth (Conner) Lott, was a lifelong area resident and member of East Mayfield Baptist Church. He was a retired truck driver for Gold Kist and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, receiving the Purple Heart. Survivors: sisters, Ruby Mitchell of Sabine County, Wilma Bickam of Shreveport, LA, and Lucille Hanks Sharp of Silsbee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Bobby Lott and Keith Lott.

Funeral services were held February 10 at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc in Hemphill with Bro. Vernon Watts officiating. Interment followed at Springhill Cemetery in Sabine County. Pallbearers: Danny Hanks, Roger Mitchell, Andy Lott, Timothy Mitchell, Terry Lott, and Bryan Lott. Honorary pallbearers were Chris Hanks and Mickey Mitchell.

Ruby Lott Mitchell, 78, died Thursday morning in the Sabine County Hospital after an illness. She was born in Hemphill to Floyd and Hessie Conner Lott. Ruby has lived in Hemphill all her life and was a member of the Bethany Missionary Baptist Church.

She is survived by her sons; Ricky Mitchell and his wife Earlene of Patroon, Micky Mitchell and his wife Diane of Louisiana, Roger Mitchell and his wife Robin of Hemphill, and Timothy Mitchell and his wife Tammy of Mabank, her daughters; Kathy Spears and her husband Blue of Hemphill, Wilma Allen and her husband Clayborne of San Augustine, Glenda Whiteside of New Braunfels, and Mona Harvey and her husband Everette of Pineland. She is also survived by twenty-nine grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM, Saturday, January 21, 2012, in the Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, Texas. Funeral services will be at 2:00PM, Sunday, January 22, 2012, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Fairmount Cemetery, Hwy 87 South, Hemphill, Texas.

Verna Marie Ebarb

Graveside services for Verna Marie Ebarb, 79, were held in the Springhill Cemetery on Wednesday, January 7, 2009. She died January 4, 2009, in her home in Hemphill, after an illness.

She was born October 30, 1929, in Sabine County and has lived her all her life. Mrs. Ebarb was a member of the East Mayfield Missionary Baptist Church. She worked privately as a caregiver.

She is survived by her sons: Johnny Ebarb of Hemphill, Joe David Ebarb of Pineland, and Ivy C. Norton of Milton, FL. Four daughters, Linda M. Blanton of Lufkin, Lucy Bolt of Hemphill, Sandra Ellis of Palestine, and Sharon Christian of Pineland. One brother Robert Ferguson of Hemphill, sisters; Patsy Canzoneri of DuPree, WS, Frances Milner of Sugarland, and Dorthy Welch of Houston; twelve grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Rev. I.W. "Buckshot" Ferguson.

Contributions to the Springhill Cemetery Fund, First State Bank, Hemphill, TX 75948, would be appreciated by the family.

Bro. I. W. Buckshot Ferguson, 77 of Hemphill, TX. died February 7, 2008 at his Home in Hemphill, TX. He was a life long native of Sabine County. Bro. Ferguson was a minister with Johnson Missionary Baptist Church of Zavalla, TX. and former pastor of Antioch Baptist Church at Gravelhill. Bro. Ferguson was a member of Littleton Fowler Masonic Lodge, and served as Masonic District Deputy. He was a metal sculptor; his works include the Road Runner at Angelina College and the Tiger at West Sabine High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

He retired from Temple-Inland in Pineland. Bro. Ferguson is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gayle Ferguson; two sons, Danny Ferguson and wife George Ann, Eleazar Carranza and wife Annette, both of Hemphill; two daughters, Kay Ferguson of Jasper, Kimberly Wiebelhaus and husband Randy of Denton; 6 grandchildren, Jill Verhalen, Brian Sexton, Cody Matlock of Denton, Danielle Wilkerson, Michelle Ferguson, and Rachel Ferguson; 5 great-grandchildren, Brenna Verhalen, Colton Verhalen, Madison Verhalen, Morgan Verhalen, and Ivy Wilkerson; one brother, Robert Ferguson; 4 sisters, Verna Ebarb, Dorothy Welch, Frances Milner, and Patsy Canzoneri. Robert Earl Ferguson, SR., 75, passed away Saturday morning in his home in the Springhill Community near Hemphill. He was born in the Springhill Community to Ivy M. and Mollie Frances Conner Ferguson. Robert worked as an insurance agent and car salesman before retiring. He had served in the U.S. Navy, was a member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, and the Littleton Fowler Masonic Lodge No.305 in Hemphill.

Robert is survived by his wife of 54 years Sylvia Ferguson of Hemphill, his sons; Robert Earl Ferguson, Jr. and his wife Linda of Fleetwood, PA, Martin Ferguson and his wife Brandie of Minden, LA, his daughter Sonja Barnes and her husband Brian of The Woodlands, TX, his sisters; Frances Milner of Cypress, TX, Patsy Canzoneri and her husband Joe of DePere, WS, beloved sister-in-law Gayle Ferguson of Hemphill, and five grandchildren: David Williams, Mollie Barnes, Sam Ferguson and wife Tiffany, Josh Ferguson, and Katie Ann Ferguson. Robert was preceded in death by his brother I.W. Ferguson, his sisters; Verna Ebarb and Dorothy Welch.

Pat Canzoneri (Ferguson) of De Pere, Wisconsin passed away on Monday, February 3, 2020. Pat was born in Springhill, Texas where she lived until she graduated from high school. She then moved to Louisiana to work at Fort Polk and there she met her husband, Joe Canzoneri. They were married for over 50 years until Joe passed away in 2016.

Pat is survived by her sister Frances Milner, her two daughters, Elizabeth (Cole) Runge and Nicole (Brett Crozier) Canzoneri, and four grandchildren: Cole, Sam, Noah, and Eli. Pat was devoted to her family and will be missed by all.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held privately by family.
