Richard "Dick" Henry Travis

According to SABINE COUNTY HISTORICAL SKETCHES AND GENEALOGICAL RECORDS "Sophronia P and Ruth (White), both had married brothers, Cannon and Richard Travis, cousins of Wm. Barret Travis of Alamo fame (p. 58). The Travis men fought with Marion 'The Swamp Fox' in the American Revolution. R.H. Travis was the son of Wm Travis, and g.son of John and Arabella Hurst Travis. This Travis lineage is a collateral line of William B. Travis of Alamo fame (p.73)"

According to MINUTES 1858-1890 OF THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH HEMPHILL, Richard H. Travis was one of the eleven founding members of this church, along with his wife, Ruth C. Travis, as well as his brother and sister-in-law, Cannon and Sophronia Travis. Richard and Cannon Travis's membership in the church was rocky. On several occasions their membership was withdrawn, such as on 13 August 1859 when "Brothers R H Travis, Cannon Travis, & Wm T White came forward and acknowledge that they bin overtaken in a falt and beged the church to bare with them on a promise of assistence of that they would Refrain in the futer from such company where uppon the Church forgive them in love." Their occasions of sin seemed to center around "indulgin in profane swaring....and indulgin too mutch in intocking spirits." Over the thirty some odd years they were associated with the church, they were expelled several times, and usually soon readmitted.

Richard married Rutha Caroline White on 14 Sep 1843 in Amite County, Mississippi. Rutha (daughter of Edward White and Elizabeth Strickland) was born about 1822 in Mississippi; was buried in Travis Cemetery, Sabine County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

As of the 1910 census, Lany was listed as an in-patient at a hospital in Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas. By 1920 she had returned to Sabine County, and was living with her son and daughter-in-law, Jody and Viney McDaniel.

Her Texas Death certificate, viewable online at FamilySearch.org, Texas Deaths, 1890-1976, shows her name as Lannie McDaniel, and that she had been predeceased by her husband. She was shown as a lifetime resident of Sabine County. The informant was Una McClelland.

MRS. B. CARTER of HEMPHILL, DIES

Services Will Be Held At 2 P.M. Today at Baptist Church

HEMPHILL, Sept. 24 (Spl) - Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday for Mrs. Beulah E. Carter, 63, who died at 8:46 a.m. Tuesday after a short illness. Services will be under the direction of the Starr Funeral Home with the Rev. Clarence Howell officiating, assisted by Ronald Spears. The body will remain at the residence until time for services. Burial will be in Hemphill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be C. C. Rice, D. B. Speights, George Morris, Phillip Gandy, O. S. Chambers, Willie Self, Julian Smith, and J. H. Minton. Mrs. Carter was a member of the Baptist Church.

She and her husband, Brad Carter, owned and operated Carter's Caf? here since 1937, and leased it only two months ago when she became ill. Prior to this, they owned and operated the Streetcar-Barn Caf? in Beaumont from 1935 to 1937. Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Horton and Mrs. Lucille Melding, both of Hemphill; two brothers, Benton Carlton of Hemphill and Alfred Carlton of Ranger, Tex.; one sister, Mrs. Ollie Chops of Houston; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Edith Huff

Edith Huff, 91 of Pt. Neches died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Golden Triangle Nursing Home in Pt. Arthur.

Mrs. Huff was a native of Hemphill and had lived in Pt. Neches 58 years.

Survivors: a daughter, Joyce Fortenberry of Pt. Neches, a son, Billy Huff of Vidor; sisters, Alma Strickland of Pt. Neches and Laura Eicke of Tomball; a brother, I. T. Strickland of Hemphill; five granchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Pat A. Riley Funeral Home in Nederland. Interment followed at Oak Bluff Memorial Cemetery in Pt. Neches.

Lura Strickland Eicke

Lura Strickland Eicke died July 11, 2005 at Tomball Regional Hospital. Mrs. Eicke was born Oct. 26, 1910 in Hemphill and was 94-years-old at the time of her death. She had lived in Bronson for many years before moving to Tomball almost 15 years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. B. "Will" Eicke. Mrs. Eicke is survived by four sons, W.B. "Bud" Eicke Jr and wife Deloris of Bay City, Cecil Eicke and wife Margie of Richmond, Col., George Eicke ans wife Annette of San Antonio, and Paul Eicke of Houston, two daughters, Louise CHILDS and husband Henry of Vidor and Emily McCLINTON and husband Herman of Tomball, and a brother I.T. Strickland of Kirbyville. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. Interment will follow at Bronson Cemetery. Funeral services for Maudie Strickland Curl, 77, of Kirbyville were held Monday, June 20, at Stringer Funeral Home chapel in Kirbyville. Interment was at Zion Hill Cemetery in Jasper County.

Elijah Carter

Elijah Carter, 85, passed away December 24, 2006, at his home in Dickinson, Texas. He was born May 30, 1921 to Albert Kemp Carter and Martha Laney Strickland in Browndell, Texas.

Elijah was a retired Chemical Operator with Amoco Chemical in Chocolate Bayou, Texas. He was a veteran of WW II serving in the United States Army, a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, a member of Abundant Life Christian Center in LaMarque, Texas, where he was involved in Redeemers Ministry. He was a former board member and treasurer at First Assembly of God Church in Arcadia, Texas and a former board member at First Assembly of God Church in Joliet, Illinois.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife of 50 years, Margaret Bernice Carter, son, Kenneth Carter, and eleven brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jane Carter, Daughters, Martha Story (Robert) of League City; Betty Schoob (Roger) of Shorewood, Illinois; Joyce Wagner (Buffard) of Andrews, Texas; son, Dale Spencer (Laura) of Alvin, Texas; daughters-in-law, Theresa Carter of Baytown, Texas; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Margie Sue Burkhalter

Margie Sue Burkhalter, 65, of 2272 Philmore, Beaumont, died Thursday, June 23, 1994, at the Regional Medical Center Hospital in Beaumont.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Johnny Creasong and Floyd Wright officiating. Interment followed at Gravelhill Cemetery in Sabine County.

Mrs. Burkhalter was born Nov. 13, 1928, in Sabine County as a daughter of the late Joseph Edward and Arie Elizabeth (Strickland) Campbell. She was a member of the Church of God and had lived in Beaumont for 48 years.

Survivors: husband, A. Z. Burkhalter of Beaumont; a granddaughter, Kristen Burkhalter; and two brothers, Jim Campbell of Hemphill and J. A. Campbell of Pasedena.

Lena Durbin, 82, passed away in her home August 24, 2015. Lena was born in Hemphill, to James and Mary Campbell Craig. Lena has lived in the Strickland Crossing community all of her life, she was a stay at home homemaker and mother; and she was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her sons: David Durbin and wife Cynthia of Strickland Crossing, Roy Durbin of Pineland, and Dennis Durbin and wife Sabrina of Hemphill, her daughters: Deborah Boyett of Strickland Crossing, Darlene Berry and husband Jeff of Vidor, and Wanda Parnell and husband Wilburn of Pineland, her 17 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

John J. Bozich, 69, of Route 1, Pineland, died Thursday, Aug. 17, 1995, at Hemphill Care Center. Bozich was born July 11, 1926, in Bronson as a son of the late Kate Estell (Travis) and John C. Bozich and had returned to the area three years ago. He was retired from the military, serving in World War II and Korea, receiving two bronze stars while in Korea. Survivors: two sisters, Katie WOOD of Pineland and Madie SHARP of Bellaire; a half sister, Melba BOYLE of Beaumont; and his step-father, Joe KELLEY of Hemphill. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Saturday at the chapel of Starr Funeral Home Inc. in Hemphill with Bro. Glenn D. Morton officiating. Interment followed at Pine Hill Cemetery near Pineland.
