When he registered for the draft during World War I, he was living in Shreveport, Louisiana, and reported his place of birth as Colfax, LA. He was a teacher in Shreveport, at the Central School, and his employer was the Caddo School Board. He had served as a Sgt. in the Louisiana National Guard for four years. William McLemore, below, and as Milton in a biography of his son, James Whitman McLamore.

    Dear Melinda:

I wasn't able to find James Whitman in my files.

However, I did find a Thomas Miller (sic) McLemore born in Louisiana, July 5, 1889. He graduated from LSU in 1915 and is listed as a 1 Lt in the US Army in 1921. He appears in the 1900 Census as the grandson of David M. Smith in Grant Parish. In 1910, he appears in Grant Parish with Griffiin D. Smith as nephew.....

The Burger King: Jim McLamore and the Building of an Empire (1998)

James W. McLemore was born to wealth, but his father lost the family fortune in the stock market crash of 1929 and became a turkey farmer. His mother was committed to a mental hospital shortly thereafter, and he never saw her again, as children were not allowed to visit. As a young man McLamore worked as a restaurant manager and then owner, and in 1954 he became Dave Edgerton's business partner in the first Burger King, originally called Insta Burger King. Three years later McLamore proposed adding a "Whopper" to the menu, basing the recipe on a terrific burger he bought from a competitor's burger stand. Edgerton and McLemore sold the company to Pillsbury in 1967, with McLemore remaining as President. He oversaw the introduction of the first version of the company's iconic "Burger King" advertising character in 1970.
