He was a private, Company K, 25th Louisiana Infantry, C.S.A., and was captured at Murfreesboro, 5 January 1863. He was then sent to City Hospital, Camp Morton, Indiana.

After the death of his first wife, Shelby married Elizabeth Frances Allen, dtr of John Allen and Emily A. Green. They had 8 additional children, all born in Cherokee County. He was buried at the Cook Cemetery.

William Ferguson, pension application 3543, approved October 12, 1899. Date of pension application July 18, 1899. He is 72 years of age and resided in Oakdale, Texas for 66 years. He is in very bad health and a farmer. He enlisted about June 1, 1863 with Company D, Cooks's Regiment, Heavy Artillery and served until the end of the war. He has two cows valued at $16, one year old yearling value $5, one calf worth $4, one horse worth $20, 10 head of hogs valued at $10. In the past two year he has sold one yearling for $5. V.H. Vickers, County Judge. W.T. Pulliam and J.O. Davidson witnesses. Dr. D.M. Cooper states that the applicant is in poor health with chronic colic and general nervous prostration. William Ferguson served with Milam County Guards, Infantry, 27th Brigade, General E.S.C. Robertson commander; Mount Vernon Grays, active Company, Infantry or Calvary, Titus County, 8th Brigade, TST was 5th Sergt., Company E, Volunteers, 11th Brigade, Captain Nathaniel B. Casagranda lists him as one of the four children of Elijah and Drucilla Cook Low, however as he is not listed in Schluter and Toole's transcription of the Sabine County, Texas household of his mother Drucilla Low in 1850, when he would have been just 13. However, he is listed in 1860, at age 23. Perhaps he is shown in 1850 on the actual microfilm, but was inadvertantly left out of the transcription. Need to follow up.

In 1870, Elbert Hines, an orphan age 14, and Amanda Hines, an orphan age 10, are living with Isaac and Amanda Low.

Elbert J. Hines Rites in Laredo

Elbert Jessie Hines, 91, 520 S. Harlandale, died at his home Friday. He was a native of Hemphill, but had resided in this city for 14 years.

He is survived by three sons, S. R. Hines of San Antonio, A. A. Hines of Laredo and C. C. Hines of Flint, Mich.; and five daughters, Mrs. W. E. Smith of Fort Worth, Mrs. Mattie Mellon of Refugio, Mrs. T. C. Grimes of Mission, and Mrs. Ruth Richter and Mrs. Alice Carpenter, both of San Antonio.

The body was sent Saturday to Lareod, for services and interment in that city.

LaDarla Walker Keith posted that she married James Madison CONNER, son of Lewis Conner and Martha Ann Weeks. She stated that Amanda and James homesteaded in DeBeca/Roosevelt County, New Mexico before returning to Wise County, Texas. They had three sons, one of them being her grandfather.

Mrs Mary Jennie Mason, 86, died Friday, February 9, 1962 about 2:00 AM in the home of her daughter, Mrs Essie Thompson in Bon Ami community near Kirbyville. She had been ill for some time. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 PM at the Thompson home. Rev Roy Harrell of Newton and Rev Jack Lee of Jasper, Baptist ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in the Friendship Cemetery near Roganville directed by E E Stringer Funeral Home of Kirbyville.

Mrs Mason was born in Sabine County and was the widow of the late Shad Mason. She had lived in Bon Ami community for the past 50 years and was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter and one sister, Mrs Sam Mason; 12 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.

"(Born February 29, 1876) on the banks of the Sabine River in old Sabinetown, where they ran a ferry. It was in hard times of reconstruction days, with lawlessness rampant, and the Stricklands early learned to fight their way through hard times and rough days...When Dee was about 7 years old, his father had trouble with a drunk who pulled him out of bed and started fighting. Following this trouble, John moved his family to Orange. Dee Strickland moved back to Sabine County and married Luvenia Walker. Two of their three children survive: Mrs. Thelma Strickland Lakey of California and Mrs. L.C. Crouch of Houston. The Stricklands moved around to sawmilling, and lived in Rusk when Mrs. Strickland died. Dee came back to Pineland and worked for a month at the mill there; became restless and spent three years in Louisiana before returning to Sabine County, where he married Miss Zilpha Lott. Dee farmed and worked for Temple Lumber Company until his retirement a few years ago. He is the father of ten children by his second marriage. They are Mrs. Gladys Stevens of Houston, J.B. Strickland who is deceased, Mrs. Miriam Amason of Pineland, Robert Strickland of Wyoming, Herbert Strickland of Kirbyville, J.D. Strickland whereabouts unknown at present, A.W. Strickland of Dallas, Mrs. Claudine Hamilton of Beaumont, Mrs. Arlene Fields of Dallas, and Darwin Strickland who is in the US Army stationed in Nebraska.
