Not found in the North Carolina census index from 1810-1850. Could he have died before 1820?

James L. McLemore, III noted, that while browsing through Leverett's book, "Ole Rosinheels", he ran across the following entry in the Appendix, page 172:

"1818, May 22 - Hezekiah McLemore's will was administered in Richland County, South Carolina. No list of heirs is given."

James L. McLemore, III intially showed Hezekiah as the father of only Hezekiah McLemore, Jr. with no other known descendants of either man. Jim later believed that there was no namesake son, and Hezekiah probably never had a family or children.

However, on October, 15, 2007, Jim proposed the following theory to the Sampson County, NC research group, that Hezekiah had a family later in life, and was the father of Raiford McLemore born ca 1815, who resided in Sampson County, NC in the 1840's through 1880's. Hezekiah may also have had one of more other children, yet unidentified.

Jim noted that it significant that Hezekiah's death in 1818 occurred IN RICHLAND COUNTY, SC. Richland County was the home of a major branch of his line, the line descending from the immigrant James' second son John and his wife Faith. They had three sons (and two daughters), the youngest being son Joel who was in the same generation as Wright McLemore, but was over twenty-five years younger than Wright, who was five or six years older than Joel's older brother John Jr. Joel was born in January 1739/40, and moved to South Carolina sometime in the mid 1760's dying there in 1795, and leaving behind a family consisting of several children who were only slightly older than was their cousin (third cousin once removed), Hezekiah. Could it have been possible that Hezekiah went there to visit , liked what he saw and stayed. Could he have even gotten his wife there, from amongst those cousins or more likely from among their neighbors, and when he died there in 1818, his wife stayed there in SC and raised his minor children there, accounting for the fact that Raiford (b. 1815) appears in NO census in the southeast NC area that we have found until he is an adult, age 35, with a wife and growing family of his own?

This hypothesis is consistent with the information discussed above and elsewhere, but it is not conclusive by any means. To it Jim added two or three more specific pieces of data that also does not prove it conclusively, but strengthens it considerably. Look at the family, the children, of Raiford (b. 1815); like the elder one, he had a son named Hezekiah of his own, which to me would indicate that he was the son of either the elder Raiford or the latter's brother Hezekiah (d. 1818); there are no other Hezekiahs among the descendants of Archibald except among the children of the two Raifords (b. 1790 and B. 1815) and their issue. That' s one piece of data. Second, and what Jim thought was even more telling: Only among the descendants of the immigrant James' second son John McLemore and his wife Faith do you find the given name "Joel" before the Civil War, that name being an almost sure give-away that its holder was a member of that family. ... Until now, when we find this one exception: right after Hezekiah (b. ca. 1844) in Raiford's (b. 1815) family is his son Joel (b. 1845), the only Joel of whom I am aware who can definitely be associated with another McLemore family besides that descending from John and Faith McLemore back in Sussex County, Virginia. It is a name that is most likely explained by this contact by Hezekiah with his cousins in Richland County, South Carolina, the Family of Joel McLemore, b. 1739/40 to John and Faith back in VA, d. 1795 in Richland County, SC, where Hezekiah himself died in 1818. And the third piece of evidence is that Raiford's next son is John McLemore, a name we do not find often in Southeast North Carolina until this time, yet every one of Joel's (died 1795, SC) children who had children, every single one, had a son named Joel AND a son named John! Is this where those two names come from?

So there you have it...Raiford (b. 1815) was the son of Hezekiah (b. 1780-83, d. 1818), and by process of elimination that leaves Tobias to be daddy of Amos (b. 1813). If you don't like this theory, fine; you are left with the alternative of accepting that Raiford had two-sons-named-Raiford theory, and that the older one does not show up on early census records, or of coming up with an hypothesis of your own that is more plausible than either. That is also possible. But this as a potenial working theory as it does explain a lot and gets us that much further down that road of identifying the links between Wright McLemore (b. 1813) and his children with so many of the McLemores who can be traced to the Southeast portion of North Carolina, around Duplin/Sampson/Bladen Counties a generation or two later, but who have posed such problems to all of us and others in trying to make the connections in the past. All we have to do at this point, I suspect, is find just a bit of data of some sort that will help us tie down Melinda's ancestor John McLemore (b. 1822) as the son of Tobias of that same approximate age, and we will have about filled out Archibald's descendants.

Then we can try to deal with the stubborn problems of the descendants of the other descendants of Wright (besides Archibald and his prodigy) who lived in that same area.

On October 21, 2007, Jim emailed the Sampson Research Group and addendum and correction to his theory above:

I have recently run across one other exception to the "Joel" Christian name rule being an indication of a connection to the family of the Immigrant James' second son John of Sussex County, VA, "Without Exception" (as a Lawyer, I should know better than to make "absolute" statements, instead of leaving myself an out with "Weasel Words"!).

Apparently there seems to have been a Joel in the family of Sterling McLemore (son of Ephraim Jr.) who was probably born sometime in the mid 1780's, and was a contemporary of the only Joel (in John's family) whose later life I have not discovered elsewhere, Joel the son of James (B. ca. 1762 VA, D. 1796 SC), oldest son of Joel (B. 1739/40 VA, D. 1795 SC), and who I had hoped I had found married to a Rhoda in Yalobusha Co., MS, but that Joel now seems to be Sterling's, not James', according to Melinda' posting to the herein referred to Rootsweb site.

However, after making that correction to "almost without exception" instead of "without exception", I still think the "Joel" rule is a good indicator of descent from John and his wife Faith, as stated below, so I'm not coming back in too far from the end of that limb quite yet.

Henry is not indexed in the North Carolina census after 1820. The John R. McLemore of Bladen County, to whom Henry transferred land to in 1829 deed abstracted above, was in Houston County, Georgia by or before 1831. This appears to his listing on the 1830 and 1840 census.

On August 30, 2007, James L. McLemore III emailed the Sampson County McLemore research group the following note:

One of the deeds she (Melinda) sent me was an 1828 deed from Henry McLemore to John R. McLemore (John Wright was often called John R., even within the family, due to general illiteracy, and the apparent belief of many at the time that his middle name was spelled "Right"). The deed was for two tracts, one of which was for 150 acreas and appears to have been the same 150 acre parcel given to Henry in an 1810 deed of gift from Archibald McLemore in which the latter identifies Henry as his son. The 1828 deed is a deed of bargain and sale, not gift, and John R. McLemore's relationship to Henry is not given. But it got me to thinking that John "R." (Wright) was probably closely related to Henry, probably even his son

I was toying with that idea when I found among my files a letter I had received back in February of 2000 from a Michael Mabile from McLean, VA; I had an email address on him as well, but it is no longer good, so I was unable to add him to this group, though I had wanted to, and tried. Does anyone else out there have his current e-mail address? If so forward this to him, and also back to me so that I will know.

Anyway, his snail-mail letter ran three and a half pages, but when compared to the deed Melinda sent, the two sources of information came together. Though lengthy, I will try to quote him at length, as it not only shows how he was approaching the problem (as well as what I was seeing), but it also gives a lot of information that may at some point ring a small bell with some of you and your researches. Mike wrote, inter alia, regarding his great-great-grandfather Wilson McLemore:

"I think I can definitely link Wilson, who lived in Dooly County, Georgia, and Pike County. Alabama, in the 1840's through 1860's, with Henry McLemore, who died in Houston County, Georgia, in 1850. In turn, I think I can definitely link Henry as having come to Houston County from Bladen County, NC. ... Rather than burden you with all of the documents I have, I thought I would summarize for you what I have. ...

"1. Wilson McLemore Wilson is listed in the 1850 and 1860 censuses for Pike County, AL and the 1845 Georgia state census for Dooly County, GA. I have other documentation linking Wilson to Dooly County and in one instance to Houston County, GA. He probably is also the Wilson McLemore listed in the 1840 federal census for Sumter County, GA. I can document that his wife Louisa's maiden name was Broxton. She was the daughter of James and Avis Broxton ... .

"2. Connection between Wilson and Henry Wilson is named in the will of Henry McLemore, which was probated in Houston County, Georgia, in 1850. ... [he enclosed a copy of the will, which I will hereafter abstract in pertinent part, in which Henry made] a token bequest of $1 to 'Willson' McLemore among other persons. Wilson and Henry's relationship is not specified in the will, but he would have to be a son or grandson. ... Since Wilson was probably about 40 years old in 1850, he was almost certainly Henry's son, not his grandson. Any possibility that the Wilson named in the will is not the same Wilson as my ancestor is ruled out by the mention of Margaret T. Brim in the will. In the 1850 census, Margaret Brim, 10 years old, is listed as living with Wilson in Pike County, Alabama. I assume Margaret is the daughter of a deceased sister of Wilson's and thus Henry's granddaughter. ...

"3. Henry McLemore-Houston County Henry McLemore first appears in the Federal Census for Houston County, Georgia, in 1830. It lists 1 white male 5-10 [Henry James McLemore, b. ca 1824], 1 white male 40-50, 1 white female under 5, 2 white females 5-10, 2 white females 10-15, and one white female 40-50 [Henry's first wife, mother of all of those children]. The 1840 census for Houston County lists Henry and shows 3 white males under 5[?], 1 white male 15-20, 1 white male 50-60, 1 white female under 5, 1 white female 10-15, 2 white females 20-30, and 1 white female 50-60. These listings are consistent in indicating Henry was born between 1780 and 1790. His first wife eventually died in Houston County [in about] 1840 [between the census and the end of the year], because he is listed in Houston County records as marrying Martha Tate on January 3, 1841. He and Martha had three children (the three minor children listed in his will). Both Henry and Martha appear in the 1850 Federal census mortality schedule in Houston County. The mortality schedule shows he was 87 years old. ... [However,] it seems 67, not 87, would be a more accurate age ... [considering his age listed in both the 1830 and 1840 censuses, and that he fathered three children in the last ten years of his life].

"4 Henry McLemore-Bladen County I connect Henry McLemore of Houston County, GA, to Bladen County, NC, based on the following evidence. The 1850 census shows he was born in North Carolina. His son Wilson was also born in North Carolina. Two Henry McLemores appear in the 1820 census for Bladen County, but neither appears in that county in 1830, when Henry first appears in the Houston County census listing. I have also traced two of the persons named in Henry's will to Bladden County. The will mentions Zilpha Bullard (evidently a daughter). The 1850 Bladen census lists a "Zilphy" Bullard, age 33, in the household of Daniel Bullard (evidently her husband). ... The Will also mentions John Wright McLemore ... ."

Bingo!!! When I saw that, I knew the connection was made. I went to the will, and there read the following bequests:

"3rd I bequeath to my granddaughter Tabitha Matilda Tate one bed and furniture such as she may chose [sic] from my bedding.

"4th I bequeath to my son Henry James McLemore two cows and calves which he can chose [sic] of those he had last year.

"4th I bequeath unto John Wright McLemore, Nancy Ann Sanders, Willson McLemore, Catherine J. C. Ervins, Zilpha Bullard, Lucretia Ellis, Margaret T. Brim, and Sarah B. McLemore one dollar apiece.

"5th The rest of my property both real and personal whatever and whatever it may be I desire and direct and bequeaath to my minor children Ann Eliza McLemore, Joseph Wesley McLemore and Archibald McLemore ..."

Note the given name of the last child, Archibald, named for Henry's father, which nails the last nail in the coffin, as it were.

So there you have it, or most of it - the important material, anyway. I think that connects John Wright McLemore, along with Wilson, William, Henry James, Joseph Wesley, and Archibald, his sons, and several daughters as well to Henry and to his father Archibald McLemore before him. And by so filling out Henry's family, I have already removed him (or did not include him up front) in the list of McLemore Men in Sampson and Bladen counties who could be possible fathers to unconnected ancestors of Group members. Maye I should add, however, the "other" Henry McLemore of the two Mike Mabile found in the Bladen County 1820 census; does anyone know anything about him? They were shown in that census as one being 26 - 45 years old (the above Henry) and over 45 (this "other" Henry).

Jim also emailed that "As I mentioned above, there are two Henry McLemores listed in the 1820 census for Bladen County. One was 26 to 45 years old, while the other was 45 or over. If Henry was really 87 when he died in 1850, as shown in the census mortality schedule, it is possible that he was the older Henry listed in the 1820 census. If he was actually between 60 and 70 at the time of his death, as would be supported by the 1840 and 1850 censuses, it is more likely he is the younger Henry listed in the 1820 Bladen County census (that is, he was no more than 40 yers old in 1820). ..."

Henry married Malinda Adkins before 1804. Malinda was born after 1783; died after 1834. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Deed Book 36, page 368 lists a the inventory of the homestead of Raiford McLemore. It was valued at $61, and drawn up by Wilson Lockamy, J.P. A subsequent listing of the homestaed can be found in Deed Book 36, page 414.The value at this alternate reporting date amounts to $344.35. It is not clear for what reason these inventories were drawn up.

Ginger Riegel is a descendant of Raiford McLemore through his daughter, Louann. She shows that Raiford is the son of Archibald McLemore. However, she seems to assume, in error, that Raiford was the son of the Archibald McLemore who married Sarah Plumley and died in Monroe County, Tennessee. This could not be correct, as that Archibald McLemore is only a few years older than Raiford.

Hezikiah McLemore 30 M Laborer North Carolina Married within the year? Why isn't his wife listed?

It would seem logical that the Hezikiah in household #487, listed immediately after the Raiford McLemore family, would be the son of Raiford. However, Margaret McLemore Lee, a descendant, instead shows that Raiford is the father of a younger Hezekiah McLemore. At the time of the 1850 census, the younger Hezekiah McLemore (age 23) was newly married and living in the Northern Division of Sampson County with his wife Caroline.

Ten years later, on the 1860 census, the son of the younger Hezekiah (David A. McLemore) was living with Raiford. Therefore, the Hezikiah McLemore listed next door to Raiford in 1850 appears to be either a nephew, or a duplicate listing for his son. The Northern Division census was completed a month after the Southern Division, so it is possible that Hezekiah was listed at both locations, and with his age incorrectly noted on the earlier census. The fact that Hezikiah's was listed as married within the year, but without a wife present, lends some credence to this possibility.

Generation: 3

  1. 6.  Raiford McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (2.Hezekiah2, 1.???1) was born about 1815 in North Carolina; and died.

    Notes:

Census records show he was born circa 1815.

Robert McLemore Butler listed him as a son of the elder Raiford McLemore. This would seem to be a logical assumption, especially as they both have the same first name and both resided in the Southern District of Sampson County at the time of the 1850 census.

However, it appears that Raiford is more likely a son of one of Raiford's older brothers, Hezekiah, Henry or Tobias.

The older Raiford McLemore (born ca 1785-1790) did not have any male children enumerated in the proper age categories on either the 1820 or 1830 Head of Household Census. Additonally, when the elder Raiford's drew up the division of his lands in 1864, these lands were distributed to "Nancy Lockamy, Rachel McLemore, Kizzia (MAYBE a nickname for Hezekiah??) McLemore, Susanna McLemore, Edith Simmons, (and) Daniel Carter's wife, Luanna." No land was transferred to the Raiford McLemore whom was born in 1815, although it is clear from census records he was still living. And finallly, at the time of the 1850 census an even younger Raiford, this one born ca. 1835, was listed in the home of the elder Raiford. It seems unlikely he would have two living sons by the same name. However, The youngest (born 1835) Raiford did not inherit land either.

As stated above, if Raiford was not be the son of the elder Raiford, then he is likely the son of one of Raiford's brothers.

Brother Henry moved to Bladen County and later to Houston County, Georgia. Unlike Raiford, he did have sons born in the time period of 1815 to 1820, but his sons were named in his will as John Wright and Willson. Therefore, he can also be ruled out.

This leaves the potential fathers of Raiford as Hezekiah or Tobias. James L. McLemore III argues that based on later family naming patterns, he is more likely the son of Hezekiah, who appears to have left North Carolina for South Carolina. Raiford likely lived in South Carolina as a youth, and then moved back to Sampson County, North Carolina.

Tobias McLemore, a brother of the elder Raiford, did have a son who was born between 1810 and 1815, as shown on the 1830 census. His unidentified son could have been either Raiford, or Amos McLemore. Amos was born ca 1813, and married Jemima SIMMONS. However, census records he only had one son in this age category, so he could only be the father of one of the two men yet to be firmly attached to their prospective father.

  2. 7.  John Wright McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (3.Henry2, 1.???1) was born about 1808 in Bladen County, North Carolina; and died.

    Notes:

Appears to have been a son of Henry McLemore of Bladen County, NC and Houston County, Georgia, due to land he purchased-situated in Sampson County-from Henry in 1829, as well as from a bequest made to him in Henry's Will. If he was a son of Henry's, his date of birth would have been no earlier than 1795 to 1800 (based on Henry's age), but no later than 1808.

It is not absolutely certain they are father and son. Some other relationship may instead exist. Robert McLemore Butler had speculated that he might instead be a direct descendant of Wright McLemore, Jr. born ca 1734 in Virginia and later a resident of Sampson County, North Carolina.

It appears that John R. McLemore moved from North Carolina to Georgia just a couple of years after purchasing this land, which sold in 1831, as evidenced by the deeds below.

John Wright McLemore can not be found on the 1840 Houston County, Georgia census. However, the 1840 Bladen County, NC census shows that a John Macklemore (age 20-30), a Wright Macklemore (age 20-30), and a John R Macklemore (age 30-40) all lived in Bladen County. Mike Mabile, in correspondence with James L. McLemore, III, indicated that John R. McLemore did move to Bladen, as did his sister Zilphia.

1844- J.R. McLEMORE, along with Duncan HAIR and P. TAYLOR were witnesses to a Bladen County, NC Deed dated 25 Dec 1844 between the Johnathan JESSOP & wife, James I ANDREWS, Dicy A. MEMORY of Cumberland County to Raiford FISHER involving 400 acres in the bend of the Harrisons Creek Swamp & on the NE side of the Cape Fear River (Courtesy of Robert McLemore Butler)

1845 Bladen County, Deed Hugh HALES to John R. McLEMORE & William HALES $5; four tracts of land-296 acrs on both sides of Gallberry Swamp, two tracts lying on one side of the old stage road purchased by Hugh HALES from William HALES, Notes payable to John D TOOMER and Daniel B BAKER Wit Daniel B BAKER Feb term 1846 H.H. ROBINSON Clerk (Courtesy of Robert McLemore Butler).

On the 1850 Bladen County census, there can be found a John R. McLemore age 42, Margaret, age 41, John H age 18, William K age 14, Sarah A age 13, Calvin age 11, Matilda J age 9, Hayse S age 7, Martha J age 5, Margaret A age 3, and Elen J age 1. This John R McLemore would have been born ca 1808, which would have made him just old enough to purchase land from Henry McLemore in 1829. His oldest son, John H, was born in Georgia ca 1832, making it very likely this is indeed John Wright McLemore, the son of Henry McLemore of Bladen County, NC and later Houston County, GA.

[Note: The McLemore's and Fishers lived near each other in 1840 and 1850 in Bladen County. Additonally, the two families appear to have been neighbors generations earlier, as in 1779 William McLemore sold land to Gabriel Holmes in Duplin County, that appears to have been adjacent to land owned by Southey Fisher, thought to be the grandfather of Rayford Fisher above. Due the proximity, and the use of the distinctive first names of Rayford/Raiford and Haywood in both families, there may have been a familial connection as some point...perhaps a McLemore daughter marrying a Fisher son?]

Robert McLemore Butler states that a Wright McLemore married a Sarah RANSOME on 17 May 1795 in Sampson County, North Carolina. This is NOT CORRECT. Wright McLemore and Sarah Ransome were married in Surry County, and this would be an entirely different Wright McLemore.

There were several men bearing the name of John and/or Wright as of the 1850 Bladen County, NC Census. The 42 year old John R. McLemore, husband of Margaret, seems the most likely candidate simply based on his age.

However, the other possiblities are as follows:

    ALSO a John McLemore 34, Betsey A, 34, Elizabeth A 12, Duncan J 9, Martha J 4, Wilie 3

    ALSO a Wright McLemore 35, Elizabeth 42, John 15

ALSO a Wright McLemore, 55 born in NC

Robert McLemore Butler, in his Civil War Information, notes that a John R McLEMORE, Pvt, resided in Cumberland County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Bladen County at age 27, October 2, 1862. Reported absent without leave in November-December 1862. Died in hospital at Goldsboro, NC February 12, 1863. Cause of death not reported. Not known if or how the two John R. McLemore's are related. Pvt McLemore would have been born ca 1835.

John married Margaret Hales before 1832. Margaret was born about 1809 in Bladen County, North Carolina; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  9. 14.  Margaret T. McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (3.Henry2, 1.???1) was born about 1825-1829 in North Carolina; and died.

    Notes:

Married a BRIM. Assumed she is the mother of Margaret T. Brim, who lived with Wilson McLemore at the time of the 1850 Pike County, Alabama census. Also assumed it was she, not her daughter, who was left a bequest of $1 in the Will of Henry McLemore of Houston County, Georgia. It is possible her first name was something other than Margaret.

    Notes:

At the time of the 1850 census, a five year old "Joe" McLemore was living with his siblings in the Howard Home, in Houston County, Georgia. At the 1860 census enumeration, a 15 year old Joseph McLemore, day laborer, was living in what appears to have been a boarding home, with the John and Lucinda White family, in the Town District of Houston County.

  13. 18.  Archibald McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (3.Henry2, 1.???1) was born about 1847 in Houston County, Georgia; and died.

  14. 19.  Mary McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (4.Raiford2, 1.???1) was born about 1820 in North Carolina; and died.

    Notes:

Not sure if she was a daughter, or second wife, to Raiford. Not listed in the 1864 Division of Lands of Raiford McLemore, unless she was also called Susannah, or she may have died prior to 1864.

  15. 20.  Louanna McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (4.Raiford2, 1.???1) was born in Dec 1825 in Sampson County, North Carolina; died after 1900; was buried in Hall Family Cemetery, Autryville, Sampson County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

Ginger Riegel states that Louanna was also called "Lucy" and "Louie." She also indicates that Louanna: "Received $28 from her father after he passed away, and that she was listed in Raiford's will as "The Wife of Daniel Carter." At the time of the 1860 census, Louanna was living with her husband Daniel Carter in the household immediately preceding that of Raiford McLemore.

Family/Spouse: Daniel E. Carter. Daniel was born in Jan 1825 in Sampson County, North Carolina; died after 1900; was buried in Hall Family Cemetery, Autryville, Sampson County, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 72. Louisa Carter  Descendancy chart to this point was born between 1845 and 1849 in North Carolina; and died.
    2. 73. Catherine "Kittie" Carter  Descendancy chart to this point was born in Apr 1848 in North Carolina; and died.
    3. 74. Josiah Carter  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1851 in North Carolina; and died.
    4. 75. James Owen Carter  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 23 May 1852 in Sampson County, North Carolina; died on 14 Apr 1925 in Clinton, Sampson County, North Carolina; was buried in Springvale Cemetery, Clinton, Sampson County, North Carolina.

  16. 21.  Hezekiah M. McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (4.Raiford2, 1.???1) was born on 8 Feb 1827 in North Carolina; died on 2 Jan 1865 in Sampson County, North Carolina; was buried in McLemore Family Cemetery, Roseboro, Sampson County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

FindAGrave shows him as a son of Tobias McLemore.

At the time of the 1850 Sampson County Census, there appear to be two (2) Hezekiah McLemore's that are enumerated. On the 1850 Sampson County census, Northern Division, dated October 18, 1850, a 23 year-old Hezekiah McLemore was listed, newly married to 23 year old Caroline McLemore. These are the ancestors of Margaret McLemore Lee of Johnston County, North Carolina, who has extensively researched these families. She shows that Hezekiah was the son of Raiford McLemore. Approximately one month earlier, on September 15, 1850, in the Southern District of Sampson County, there is a listing for a 30 year-old Hezekiah McLemore. He was living alone in household 487, but the census indicated that he was newly married within the year, but no wife is listed with him. The listing immediately preceding his is that of Raiford McLemore--father of the 23 year old Hezekiah in the Northern District. As these Northern and Southern District were enumerated more that a month apart, it possible that Hezekiah was simply double counted, with his age being listed incorrectly on the Southern District census. That he was shown as newly married on both census reports adds some credence to this possibility.

At the time of the 1860 census, in the Northern District of Sampson County, Clinton P.O., a 32 year old Hezekiah McLemore can be found. Living with him is 31 year-old Matilda, and a 4 year-old girl named Celestial. Margaret Lee and Robert Butler both indicate that Hezekiah's first wife, Caroline, died shortly after giving birth to their son David, and that Hezekiah remarried Matilda Fowler. Her last name is cited as Campbell in Rev. William McLemore's Sampson index, but this appears to be in error. Hezekiah's son, David is not listed in the household. He is instead living with his grandfather, Raiford.

The 1870 census listing for 70 year-old Raiford McLemore in 1870 shows him still in the Southern Division of Sampson County, along with 37 year old Mary, 22 year old Rachel, 15 year old Amos, 8 year old David, and 7 year old Louanne. Although it is known that the 8 year old David was his grandson, Raiford's relationship to 7 year Louanne is not known. It is also not known of Mary, some thirty years younger than Raiford, was his daughter or a second wife.

Robert McLemore Butler shows Hezekiah M. McLemore as a Pvt 2nd Co A 2nd Artillery Regt. Born 1843 (sic) in Sampson County, Enlisted February 9, 1863 in Clinton. Robert has a copy of a letter he wrote to his father on March 22, 1863 from Fort Cashwell. Hezekiah was hospitalized December 21, 1864 at Wilmington with typhoid pneumonia. Furloughed December 27, 1864 for 60 days.

Margaret McLemore Lee indicated that Hezekiah McLemore died circa 1864 at Fort Fisher during the Civil War, from "illness." However, Robert McLemore Butler found the following death notice of Hezekiah "Died---in Sampson on 2 Jan 1865, at the residence of John FOWLER, Esq., Mr. Hezekiah McLEMORE, in the 39th year of age. (b. 8 Feb 1827..Buried at McLemore Cemetery, Roseboro, N.C. h/o Matilda J. (FOWLER) McLemore. It appears that Hezekiah died from pneumonia while on furlough.

The last major stronghold of the Confederacy, Fort Fisher was the site of two major battles and finally fell January 15, 1865. This earthen fort kept the Cape Fear River and the port of Wilmington open to blockade runners which delivered vital supplies to Confederate armies. 17. 22.  Nancy McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (4.Raiford2, 1.???1) was born about 1832 in North Carolina; and died.

    Notes:

Married a Lockamy. There were numerous "Loccamy" families in Sampson County at the time of the 1860 census, but I could not find one indexed with a Nancy. There was a household in McDaniels Township consisting of Nathan and Martha I. Loccamy, with Martha being around the same age (28) as Nancy would have been.

At the time of the 1870 North Carolina Census, Sampson County, McDaniels Twp the following family is listed:

    LOCKEMY Nancy 38 F W Keeping House $200 North Carolina Can't read/write
    " George 4 M W at home North Carolina
McLEMORE David 18 M W Works on Farm North Carolina <---Appears to be her nephew, the orphaned son of Hezekiah McLemore

Bonnie Seiler shows that she married Daniel Lockemy, and that they were the parents of Etom, Anna, Moses, Needom, Anglelia, Robert and George.

Immediately following her household were Thomas and Rachel (McLemore) Smith.

According to Robert McLemore Butler, there was a Nancy McLEMORE of Sampson County who married, on 8 Feb 1858, Mr.Henry HALL. Marriage performed by Rev. Miles P. OWEN. It appears this was a different Nancy McLemore.

  18. 23.  Raiford McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (4.Raiford2, 1.???1) was born about 1835 in North Carolina; and died.

    Notes:

He was listed on the 1850 census in the household of Raiford McLemore, but not in the 1864 Division of the Lands of Raiford McLemore. This means he may have died prior to 1864, or may not have been an heir of Raiford.

  19. 24.  Rachel McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (4.Raiford2, 1.???1) was born about 1837 in North Carolina; and died.

Rachel married Thomas Smith on 10 Aug 1865 in Sampson County, North Carolina. Thomas was born about 1835 in North Carolina; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 78. John H. Smith  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1862 in North Carolina; and died.
    2. 79. Amos A. Smith  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1866 in North Carolina; and died.
    3. 80. Nancy L. Smith  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1868 in North Carolina; and died.
    4. 81. Raiford H. Smith  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1871 in North Carolina; and died.
    5. 82. Levinia Smith  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1875 in North Carolina; died before 1880 in North Carolina.
    6. 83. Margaret Missouri Smith  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1877 in North Carolina; and died.

  20. 25.  Edith McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (4.Raiford2, 1.???1) was born about 1841 in North Carolina; died before 1868 in Sampson County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

At the time of the 1860 census, Edith and Samuel lived in close proximity to her father's family, as wall as to her sister and brother-in-law, Louanna and Daniel Carter.

It appears she died prior to 1868, because in census enumerations after 1860, her husband was listed with a woman named Millie as his wife. Futhermore, according to the 1900 census, he and Millie had been married for 32 years, which means they would have married circa 1868. Furthermore, Millie was shown as the mother of 9 children total, eight of them still living. However, a total of 12 children were listed with the family in the census reports from 1860 through 1900. Therefore, Edith was the mother of AT least the first three children, Rachel, Raiford and Amos. Incidentally, all three of them were named after her siblings. She was most likely also the mother of Caladonia, born in 1867. Millie would have been the mother of the remaining 8 children listed.

Edith married Samuel Simmons before 1860 in North Carolina. Samuel was born about 1838 in North Carolina; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. 84. Rachel Simmons  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1860 in North Carolina; and died.
    2. 85. Raiford Simmons  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1862 in North Carolina; and died.
    3. 86. Amos A. Simmons  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1866 in North Carolina; and died.
    4. 87. Caladonia Simmons  Descendancy chart to this point was born about 1867 in North Carolina; and died.

  21. 26.  Amos McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (4.Raiford2, 1.???1) was born about 1845 in North Carolina; and died.

    Notes:

He was listed on the 1850 and 1860 census in the household of Raiford McLemore, but not in the 1864 Division of the Lands of Raiford McLemore. Could he have died prior to that date?

  22. 27.  Louanna McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (4.Raiford2, 1.???1) was born about 1853 in Sampson County, North Carolina; and died.

    Notes:

Is she a daughter of Raiford, or Granddaughter? Note the eight year gap in age between she and Amos. She was listed on the 1850 census in the household of Raiford McLemore, but not in the 1864 Division of the Lands of Raiford McLemore. Therefore, it is likely that she was either deceased or not an heir of Raiford, unless she was also called Susanna.

At the time of the 1870 census, she was living with Rachel (McLemore) and Thomas Smith, and listed as "Keeping House."

  23. 28.  Daughter McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (5.Tobias2, 1.???1) was born between 1810 and 1815 in Sampson County, North Carolina; and died.

  24. 29.  Amos McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (5.Tobias2, 1.???1) was born about 1813 in Sampson County, North Carolina; died after 1887 in Sampson County, North Carolina.

    Notes:

Based on the 1860 census, Amos appears to have been born ca. 1813.

Amos was said to be the son of Raiford McLemore by researcher Robert McLemore Butler. However, based on the 1820 and 1830 Sampson County, NC census enumeration, Raiford did not appear to have any sons that were this age. Additionally, Raiford McLemore appears to have also been the father or otherwise closely associated with an Amos McLemore who was born ca 1845. Finally, in the Division of the lands of Raiford McLemore, done ca 1864, Amos was not mentioned.

Due to all of these factors, it seems unlikely to me that Amos was a son of Raiford McLemore. It would therefore seem likely a that he was actually the son of one of Raiford's three older brothers, Hezekiah, Henry or Tobias.

Very little is known about the makeup of HEZEKIAH's family. It appears that Hezekiah may have died sometime after 1813 when his last land transaction in Sampson County is recorded. It is possible, however, that he left surviving children in or around Sampson County. It is also possible that he moved away from North Carolina, presumably taking his family with him. James L. McLemore, III thinks it a strong possibility that Hezekiah moved to South Carolina, where he died ca. 1818. Based on naming patterns, however, it seems Hezekiah was more likely the father of Raiford McLemore, born ca 1815 than of Amos, born ca 1813. It is possible, however, that he was the father of Amos.

HENRY had a son that was born between 1810 and 1820, and therefore he could be the father of Amos McLemore. Henry's family was in Bladen County, which was adjacent to Sampson County, at the time of the 1820 and 1830 census. Additionally, in 1870, a deed shows that Amos & Jemima McLemore sold property in Sampson County that was described as "Beginning at a stake on the old Pond two pines as pointers below his old house, whence with Henry McLEMORE's line...." That Amos's land adjoined land once owned by Henry adds weight to this possibility. However, James L. McLemore, III has ruled out Henry due to a Will filed by Henry in Georgia, and Amos is NOT included in his list of children by either of his two wives. Henry's sons born between 1910 and 1915 appear to have been John Wright McLemore and Wilson McLemore, and therefore Henry could not have been the father of Amos.

Finally, TOBIAS McLemore, was also listed as having a son born between 1810 and 1815. By process of elimination, Tobias seems to be the most likely fit as being the father of Amos, unless of course Amos was the son of Hezekiah and Raiford, also born ca 1810-1815, was the son of Tobias.

Based on all of the above, it is assumed that Amos is the son of Tobias, and Raiford the son of Hezekiah. Further proof should be sought out to support both assumptions.

    Notes:

It is assumed that since John McLemore, at a relatively young age, was married to Sarah Morgan of Sampson County, NC that he was also almost certainly a native of Sampson County, NC himself. It further appears, based on the 1840 head of household census, that he was probably already living with the Morgan family by 1840, when he would have been just 18. It is not known if he and Sarah were already married, or if he was simply a farm hand. Furthermore, an analysis of all the McLemore families in Sampson County, NC (both through and examination of census enumerations and land transfer deeds) indicate that if John McLemore was indeed from Sampson County, he would almost certainly have to be a son of Tobias McLemore. There is no other family into which he would fit. This relationship is therefore based on circumstantial evidence, and is not absolutely certain. Any additional information, which would either help prove or disprove this relationship, is most welcome. Please email: strong@texas.net

In a letter written by Johnnie Mae Speights, she recounted a story told by her Uncle Ira "...his father ran away from home at age 14 in the dark of night because he was smoking in the barn and set it on fire and it burned up, horses and all." Henry McLemore heard a slightly different version of this story. As told to him by Ira's son, DeFord "...the father was a mean drunk. He came home with a group of men after a night of heavy drinking. He woke him up in the middle of the night and ordered him to go tend to the horses. He stumbled out in the dark to the barn to do this. As he was working, one the horses kicked over a lantern, and the barn started on fire. Scared to death of his facing his father's wrath, he jumped onto a horse and took off, never looking back."

According to Nan McCoy Kittell of Jasper, a descendant of John McLemore, it was actually John McLemore (our common ancestor), and not his son John Finn, "who ran away after burning down the barn." Nan also thinks John may have had the middle initial "M", but does not know what that stood for. Nan's mother, who also did much research on this branch of the McLemore family, noted that "John left S. C. (sic) with an older brother when he was 16 years old."

Jim White, also a McLemore family researcher, stated that a databse he had access to noted a Philadelphia Insurance company (Pioneer) which had records of a claim on a Barn owned by Tobias McLemore for $203 around 1830. He also referenced the Draper papers for this claim.

John and Sarah McLemore can first be positively identified on the 1850 Decatur County, Georgia federal census. John McElmore, a 28 year old Farmer born in North Carolina, is shown with wife Sarah (age 24, also born in North Carolina) and children William (age 5), James (age 3), and Sarah (11 months), (household #516-516). All the children were shown on this census as being born in Georgia. Based on the relatively young ages of John and Sarah at the time of the birth of their eldest son William, it was likely a first marriage for them both. It is not known if they married in North Carolina, Georgia, or elsewhere. It further appears they were in Georgia by about 1845, based on William's age. No other McLemore's were found on the Decatur 1850 census.

Just a few homes away from them in 1850 were Sarah's parents, Daniel and Mary Morgan. The Morgan family can be found in Sampson County, North Carolina at the time of the 1830 and 1840 census. Additionally, when the 1840 Sampson County census was taken, Daniel and Mary Morgan had an otherwise unaccounted for "male between 15-20" living with them. It is presumed this was their son-in-law/son-in-law to be, John McLemore, who was said to have "run away from home" circa 1836.

John McLemore and family followed the Morgan family from Decatur County, Georgia to Newton County, Texas sometime after 1850. Sarah died either enroute, or shortly after arriving to Texas.

Per a marriage license on file in Jasper County, "John McLemore married Sarah Ann Boit (Boyett) on July 26, 1859". Based on the ages of the five children listed with them on the 1860 Newton County, Texas Census, they would have all been his from his first marriage to Sarah Morgan. The children shown on the 1860 census were William H (age 14), James H (age 12), John F (age 7), Daniel F (age 3), and Mary A (age 2). William and James had both appeared on the earlier 1850 Decatur County, GA census. Sarah, who had been shown as an 11 month old toddler in 1850, but not on this subsequent census, had apparently died. The family was located in adjacent Jasper County, Texas at the time of the 1870 census.

Nan Kittell located the following land record from Newton County:

No. 79, Vol. 29 In the Name of the State of Texas. To all to whom these presents shall come, know ye, I Sam HOUSTON, Governor of the State of Texas aforesaid by virtue of the power vested in me by law and in accordance with the laws of said State in such case made and provided do by these presents grant to John MacLAMORE assignee of James A. WALTERS his heirs or asigns forever, 160 acres of land situated and described as follows. In Newton County on the waters of Slaydons Creek a tributary of Sabine river 17 mile S.16 degree W. from Newton by virtue of Premption Certificate No. 5 issued to John MacLEMORE as assignee of James A. WALTERS by the Chief Justice of Newton County 20th day of December 1858. Beg. at a stake on the W. line of H. KELLY's 160 acre survey...and on the N.line of L. DONAHOS 1/2 league survey..... Hereby relinquishing to him the said John MacLEMORE and his heirs or assigns forever all the right and title in and to said land, heretofore held and possessed by the said State, and I do hereby issue this Letter Patent for the same. In testimony whereof I have caused the seal of the State to be affixed as well as the seal of the Genral land office. Done at the City of Austin on the 6th day of February 1860. Francis M. WHITE, Comm. G.L. Office Sam HOUSTON, Gov. Filed--Sept 24th, 1860 at 2 p.m. Recorded--Vol. "C" p 534

On October 7, 1874, John sold this same 160 acres of land to James R. RICHARDSON for $1 an acre. John apparently could not write, as he signed the land conveyance with his mark. His name on this document was spelled as "McClemore."

Even after his second marriage to Sarah Ann Boyett, there continued to be a close connection between John McLemore and the Morgan family. Robert Lee McLemore sent me copies of deeds from the late 1860's in which Malichi Morgan, Kizzie Kelly, and John McLemore transfered property they jointly held to Dunkin and Eliza Morgan. Furthermore, J.F. and Mary Ann McLemore were mentioned by name as grandchildren of Daniel and Mary Morgan in a deed dated January, 1889. Dorine Speights also wrote that "Aunt Julie Morgan was closely related to Pap (Finn McLemore). He and mother used to go by buggy to Jasper to see her." From Jasper Cemetery records, it appears numerous members of both the McLemore and Morgan family are buried near each other at the Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Jasper. The Zion Hill Baptist Church is the oldest Protestant Church in Jasper County.

John McLemore died in January 1891. In 1899, Sarah Ann applied for a Widow's Pension, based on John's service in the C.S.A. Her application stated that John served in Co K, Speights Regiment, 21st Texas from the fall of 1864 to the Spring of 1865.

The War Department indicated, however, that there were "no rolls on file in this office of Company K, 21st Texas Infantry, C.S.A., and no record has been found of the service, capture or parole of a man named John McLemore, as a member of this organization." Sarah's original application (File No. 2267) was rejected on September 28, 1899. Sarah reapplied for a pension almost 10 years later, in October of 1907. On this application she indicated that John served for about 3 years, from April 1862 to 1865. Both J. W. Claud and M. Morgan testified that they had served alongside him. This application (File No., 13383) was approved in March, 1908. Sarah Ann died sometime shortly thereafter.

In Zion Hill Cemetery is a double tombstone reading simply: McLemore

A direct male descendant volunteered to have his DNA tested. The results can be found at www.ysearch.org, under the user ID #4E4HJ. The FamilyTreeDNA kit number is 33104.

A direct male descendant of John McLemore was a participant in the Morrison DNA study. This DNA was a high definition match to two other McLemore's (not previously proven to be related), as well as to a McElmurry from Kentucky. See the results for Group O at the following website:

    http://www.geneticousins.com/morrison/

The McLemore's that he matched were (1) a descendant of Keton Jones McLemore, whom in 1850 lived just across the border from Sabine County, Texas, where some of John's descendants later settled and (2) Wright McLemore, born in North Carolina and living in Arkansas, next to Keton Jones McLemore, at the time of the 1830 census. The two matches are one-step and two-steps removed, respectively, at twenty five markers. The differences in both cases are on rapidly mutating markers.

According to FamilytreeDNA in Houston, the probability that the two DNA donors share a common ancestor, is as follows:

In comparing 25 markers, the probability of sharing a common ancestor within the last...

    4 generations is
    27.54%
    8 generations is
    58.22%
    12 generations is
    78.24%
    16 generations is
    89.3%
    20 generations is
    94.93%
    24 generations is
    97.66%

In addition to this above matches, the Wright McLemore, John McLemore, and Keton Jones McLemore descendants were also 12 marker Y DNA matches to a proven descendant of Abraham Macklemore, the immigrant, thought be a brother to James Macklemore, immigrant. This 12 marker match was through the line of Robert McLemore, born 1769 in North Carolina, a grandson of Abraham's.

Each of these matches, including the McElmurry, can be found indexed in these files.

The members of R1b are believed to be the descendants of the first modern humans who entered Europe about 35,000-40,000 years ago. Those R1b forebearers were the people who painted the beautiful art in the caves in Spain and France. They were the contemporaries (and perhaps exterminators) of the European Neanderthals. R1b is the most common Y haplogroup in Europe - more than half of men of European descent belong to R1b. Fourteen of the 30 most common haplotypes in the YSTR.org database are typical of R1b.

Edwin Holcombe writes that "the marker values...are close enough to modal values for Haplogroup R that there are matches to this family in Scotland, Ireland, England, and other locations in Europe even at 67 markers. The family's haplogroup is projected in the project Results listing to be R-L21, but this has not been confirmed by a SNP test. With the common values that this group has for its STR markers, SNP testing may be the key to learning more about the origins of this family through DNA research."

  32. 37.  Daughter McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (5.Tobias2, 1.???1) was born between 1835 and 1840 in Sampson County, North Carolina; and died.

    Notes:

Might this have actually been a son, as the age would fit for Tobias McLemore, born ca 1838 in North Carolina?

  33. 38.  Tobias McLemore, Jr. Descendancy chart to this point (5.Tobias2, 1.???1) was born between 1836 and 1838 in Sampson County, North Carolina; died after Aug 1862 in Virginia.

    Notes:

In 1860, in Little Coharie, Sampson County, the following family can be found.

    431-414
    Sarah McLemor 70 F $125 North Carolina
Tobias " 24 M Turpentine Maker North Carolina
    Sarah " 30 F North Carolina

Based simply on his name, 24 year old Tobias McLemore might be a son of Tobias McLemore, and grandson of Archibald McLemore, both of Sampson County.

The older Tobias McLemore, born between 1780 and 1790, can not be located on the 1850 or 1860 census. It appears he was already dead. However, there was NOT a son under the age of 5 listed in his household in 1840.

It was also indicated that neither Sarah's could read or write. Presumably Tobias was able to.

Robert McLemore Butler notes that a Tobias McLEMORE was a private in Company A, 30th Regiment N.C.T, under the name "Sampson Rangers." He was born in 1838 in Sampson County. He was a turpentine distiller. Enlisted September 1, 1861 in Clinton. Hospitalized August 1862 at Lynchburg Virginia. Never returned to unit and supposed died.

A condensed history of the Rangers, as published in the Fayetteville Observer on Monday, April 4, 1864 follows. In the article, Tobias was listed as "missing since August, 1862"

(Research):THE SAMPSON RANGERS COMPANY A, 30th N.C.R. Fayetteville Observer, Monday, April 4, 1864 Messrs Editors: I have been intending for a long time to give you a condensed history of Company A, 30th Regiment N.C.T., the company to which I belong, not with a view of extolling the deeds we have done but to do justice to the "noble dead". The company was organized at Clinton, Sampson Co., N.C. April 20, 1861 under the name Sampson Rangers by electing F.J. Faison as captain, R.A. Moseley as 1st Lt., and J.C. Holmes and G.W. Marsh as 2nd Lts. It was the first company organized in Sampson County. Under this organization we were ordered to Fort Johnson, which post was commanded by Captain Jones. The first three months we spent at this place, during which time the 20th Regiment N.C.T. was being organized by electing A. Iverson colonel and Capt. F.J. Faison as Lt. Colonel and ----- Toon as Major. Under this organization, about the latter part of August, we were sent to Fort Caswell, as an attack on the fort was daily expected. Lt. Col. Faison was in command of the fort. Our captain having been promoted and Lts. Moseley and Marsh having resigned, 2nd Lt. J.C. Holmes was elected captain, W.W. Sillers 1st Lt., C. Patrick and C.T. Stevens as 2nd lieutenants of the company. Here we had a great deal of hard work to do, putting the fort in a better state of defense and mounting heavy guns, etc. We suffered very much at the fort from the hot weather and scarcity of good water. The water in the fort entirely gave out and we were forced to dig wells to get water, which was not good, and consequently created thirst. The men not being accustomed to hardship and privation, considered this very hard. Very soon, we were transferred to the 30th N.C.T., which was organized by electing F.M. Parker as colonel and Walter Draughen as lieutenant colonel and Jas. T. Kell as major. The regiment was then ordered from Raleigh to Wilmington, N.C., and thence to Smithville, at which place our company joined the regiment. After remaining at Smithville about three weeks we were ordered to South Carolina; the order being countermanded, the regiment was sent to Camp Wyatt, where we built winter quarters and remained until the Battle of Newbern came off. The regiment was ordered to Newbern and got as far as Wilmington, but could not get transportation in time to partake in the fight, consequently, the order was countermanded and the regiment went into quarters at Camp Lamb. From there we went to Camp French, thence to Camp Holmes, and thence to Camp Saunders in Onslow County, where, on the 1st May, 1862, the regiment was re-organized, by electing F.M. Parker as colonel, J.T. Kell as lieutenant colonel, and W.W. Sillers as major. The company re-elected J.C. Holmes as captain, G.F. Williams as first lieutenant and S.(?) T. Stevens and L.M. White as 2nd lieutenants. From Camp Saunders we were ordered to Wilmington and about June 11, 1862 we were ordered to Richmond and became one of the regiments of G.B. Anderson's Brigade About the 21st June we had a sharp skirmish with the enemy on picket near Seven Pines in which Private A.A. Lewis was seriously wounded in the left arm. About the 26th June we were under a heavy fire of shot and shell at Mechanicsville. On the 27th we pursued the retreating enemy to Cold Harbor. In this engagement we lost two killed and Sergeants R.M. Crumpler and H.S. Royal and Private Nevil Royal wounded. About the 1st of July at Malvern Hill we again met the enemy in deadly conflict. At this place we lost three killed and Wm. H. Johnson and Privates R.G. Cox and T.M. Howard wounded; also others were slightly wounded and two captured by the enemy. We very soon went back to Richmond to recuperate and rest. August 19, 1862 we were ordered to report, together with our division, D.H. Hill's, to General Jackson. We reached the main army under General Lee near the Potomac and crossed over into Maryland on Sept. 5. Our division fought in the Battle of South Mountain Sept. 14 and then marched to Sharpsburg and engaged on Sept. 17. We lost one killed and Sgt. A. Hobbs and Privates F.H. Howard, J.R. Holland and Willis Lee wounded. The company stood firm and immovable, assisting in repulsing onset after onset of the heavy columns of the enemy. The night of the 18th the Potomac was re-crossed and we remained in the Valley until the middle of November and then marched to Fredericksburg. The 13th (?) December the company was carried into the Fredericksburg fray, but fortunately none were seriously wounded. We had nothing but picket duty to do during the winter and spring until the 27th April, when the enemy came across the Rappahannock and thanks be to God Hooker was defeated. The brigade, headed by the gallant Ramseur, on Sunday morning May 3, attacked the enemy in their entrenchments and drove them from two lines of breastworks and sent them howling into the Wilderness. Our loss was severe. The company went into the fight 38 strong and came out five killed and eighteen wounded. At Chancellorsville the following were wounded: Sgts. R. M. Crumpler, H.S. Royal, H. Williamson, Corp. J.M. Crumpler and Privates J.M. Kelly, Jas. Williamson, W.J. Taylor, J.M. Parker, E.N. Butler, Joseph Butler, G.W. Rackley, A.H. Brewer, H. Butler, J.A. Weeks, mortally, C.W. Duncan, mortally, J.C. Walker, Corp. S. Boon and N. Godwin. After the battle of Chancellorsville, we returned to our old camp near Fredericksburg and remained until the 10th June when the advance into Pennsylvania commenced. The company did its noble duty in the taking of Berrysville and Martinsburg. Our brigade was the first to cross the Potomac and to occupy Williamsport, Maryland. Several places were taken and hard marching done in Maryland and Pennsylvania until at last we reached Gettysburg. The company was in the three days fight and acted well and fortunately none killed and only two wounded'97 Sgt. J.W. Merritt and A.H. Brewer, who were taken prisoners. Soon we re-crossed the Potomac and our march commenced to the Rapidan. At Manassas Gap, we had a sharp skirmish with the enemy. We reached Orange Court House on August 2 and remained near this place until September 8 when we assisted in driving Meade to Centreville. Then we re-crossed the Rappahannock and camped near Kelly's Ford; and on Nov. 7, our regiment being in reserve on picket near Kelly's Ford to support the 2nd Regiment N.C.T., was ordered to the river to reinforce the 2nd N.C.T. The enemy being in strong force and having taken advantage of a strong position poured a deadly fire of musketry into our ranks while we were going into the river. Soon after reaching the river, we were ordered to fall back; the regiment fell back to the woods about a half mile from the river, under a tremendous fire of shot and shell. About that time, Lt. Col. Sillers, commanding the regiment, was ordered by Col. Bennett, commanding the brigade, to deploy the regiment on a hill near by and hold the enemy in check at all hazards, this being done but the position was maintained with difficulty. Late in the evening Lt. Col. Sillers received a mortal wound. At 11:00 that night, we drew off. The company lost one killed and the following wounded: Sgt. R.M. Crumpler, O.B. Cobb, Jas. Williamson, T.J. Warrick, M. Dove, J. Frizeland; also we lost 13 men as prisoners. We soon re-crossed the Rapidan and camped near Morton's Ford. Our regiment was under heavy fire at Mine Run and Morton's Ford. We have been in various skirmished too tedious to tell. A Member List of Deceased of Company A, 30th N.C.T. M.S. Generation: 4

  1. 39.  Martha McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (6.Raiford3, 2.Hezekiah2, 1.???1) was born about 1836 in Sampson County, North Carolina; and died.

    Notes:

At the time of the 1870 census, she was no longer listed in her parents home. She may have died, married, or *might* be the Martha McLemore that was listed as a housekeeper in the home of 72 year old Rachel Fowler. She would have been about 34 at the time, however, and Rachel's housekeeper was only listed as age 25.

  2. 40.  Ann McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (6.Raiford3, 2.Hezekiah2, 1.???1) was born about 1840 in Sampson County, North Carolina; and died.

    Notes:

It appears to have been her cousin, Anna McLemore (daughter of Amos McLemore and Jemima SIMMONS), and not Ann, who sold the following land in 1885: Cumberland County, NC Deed Book 79, p 353 Ann McLEMORE to John AVERITT 197 1/2 acres adjacent JESSUP and in 1890: Cumberland County NC Deed Bk 90 p 403 Ann McLEMORE to Wm. BYRD 42 acres on Harrison Creek

  3. 41.  William S. McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (6.Raiford3, 2.Hezekiah2, 1.???1) was born about 1842 in Sampson County, North Carolina; died on 27 May 1864 in Richmond (Independent City), Virginia.

    Notes:

According to Robert McLemore Butler, William S. McLemore was a private in Co A Regt 30, Infantry. He was born in 1842 in Sampson County. He enlisted September 1861 at Clinton. He was captured, date unknown, and then paroled on October 2, 1862 at Leesburg, Virginia. He died May 27, 1864 in a hospital in Richmond of Gunshot wounds. He was the son of Raiford McLemore born in 1815.

  4. 42.  Sarah McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (6.Raiford3, 2.Hezekiah2, 1.???1) was born about 1843 in Sampson County, North Carolina; and died.

    Notes:

Per Robert McLemore Butler, a Sarah McLemore married Henry CALCUTT on March 26, 1866 in Sampson County.

  5. 43.  Hezekiah M. McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (6.Raiford3, 2.Hezekiah2, 1.???1) was born about 1844 in Sampson County, North Carolina; died after 1900.

    Notes:

NOT the same Hezekiah McLemore that died during the Civil War.

Bonnie Seiler shows he married second Matilda CAMPBELL. I believe this is incorrect, and that she may be confusing him with his cousin, also Hezekiah McLemore.

At the time of the 1900 census, there was a John McLemore, born July 1855, who was a farmer in White Oak, Bladen County, North Carolina. He was married to a Christine, who was also born in July 1855. They were the parents of four children, Charlie B. (1882), Louis H. (1884), Minnie (1890) and Anna (1894). This may be the son of Raiford and Mary, as Bladen County is adjacent to Sampson County.

Robert McLemore Butler instead has him married to an Ann TATOM.

  51. 89.  Anna McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (29.Amos3, 5.Tobias2, 1.???1) was born about 1840 in North Carolina; and died.

    Notes:

At the time of the 1900 Cumberland County, NC census, a 54 year old Annie McLemore was living in the home of Edward C. and Lena McLemore. She was listed as "Aunt," and her date of birth was shown as Nov. 1845. She was single.

Bonnie Seiler shows her instead as the mother of an Edward C. McLemore.

It appears to have been Anna, and not her cousin Ann McLemore (daughter of Raiford McLemore and Polly Underwood) who sold the following land in 1885: Cumberland County, NC Deed Book 79, p 353 Ann McLEMORE to John AVERITT 197 1/2 acres adjacent JESSUP and in 1890: Cumberland County NC Deed Bk 90 p 403 Ann McLEMORE to Wm. BYRD 42 acres on Harrison Creek. Her brother, Haywood, also sold land adjacent to the Jessup's in Cumberland County.

    Notes:

According to Robert McLemore Butler, he was Pvt 2nd Co A 2nd Artillery Regt during the Civil War. He was born ca 1843 in Sampson County and the son of Amos McLemore (b. 1813). Lofton enlisted July 15, 1862 in Wake County. He was wounded May 2, 1863 at Chancellorsville, Va. Reported absent for the next 11 months due to wounds. Discharged April 24, 1864 due to phthisis pulmonalis affecting both lungs. The Cumberland Plough Boys website instead shows that he servied in the North Carolina Regiment, 2nd Company E.

    http://ploughboys.org/tag/2nd-battalion-north-carolina-local-defense/page/2/

In 1869, Lofton was a witness, along with Zachariah ROYAL, to the Will of Zachariah ROYAL dated 28 Jun 1869. It was probated 12 Mar 1870. Zachariah's wife was Louisa ROYAL, and she was left the furniture, enough provisions for her support for one year and livestock...at her death to be divided equally between all five (5) children---Oliver ROYAL, Allen ROYAL, Rice ROYAL, Emely ROYAL and Nancy ROYAL. (Courtesy Robert McLemore Butler, who noted that Emily Royal was Lofton's wife).

After Lofton's death, his oldest sons, Edward and Amos, conveyed land they had inherited from him to their younger half brothers, O.B, Alvin and Dennis. As son Abner was not mentioned in the deed, it appears they may have died prior to its execution in 1910. Edward and and Amos's sister, Ida, was also not mentioned in the conveyence.

  55. 93.  William McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (34.John3, 5.Tobias2, 1.???1) was born about 1845 in Decatur County, Georgia; and died.

    Notes:

In the 1850 Decatur County, Georgia census, he is listed as born in Georgia. On the 1860 census, his birthplace is instead shown as North Carolina.

Nan Kittell could find no further record of William McLemore after 1860, and presumed he did not survive the Civil War.

In the Fall 1998 issue of the Red River County Texas Genealogical Society, a list is included of "the John C. Burkes Camp # 656 of the United Confederate Veterans was established in Red River County, Texas in the summer of 1890. This organization met yearly, usually in August, on campgrounds that were located about one mile northeast of Clarksville. It eventually became a four or five day affair with dancing, ball games, food, music, carnival attractions and patriotic speeches. It disbanded after the last Confederate Veteran member died and the campground was sold June 23, 1942. The actual list was found in the RRCTGS files and was transcribed from original records that were in poor condition. The listing includes a W.H. McLemore

There is a William H. McLemore, parents unknown born, on a WorldConnect Tree on RootsWeb that is connected to Red River county. If the tree is accurate, he was actually born in Red River County versus Georgia, so he would not be the same William McLemore as our son of John and Sarah.

He is listed as William H. McLemore, head of household, in the 1870 census for Jasper Co., MO, age 27, born TX.

He is listed as W. H. McLemore, head of household, in the 1880 census for Red River Co., TX, age 37, born TX, father born VA, mother born AL.

He is listed as W. H. Mclemore, head of household, in the 1900 census for Red River Co., TX, age 57, born June 1843, married 33? year, born TX, father born VA, mother born AL.

There is at least one other William McLemore was was a veteran of the Civil War, as he is buried in Austin and not in the Woodland Graveyard in Norht Texas. Tom McLemore emailed Melinda Strong on June 9, 2003 that "Last week Bonnie and I were in Austin....(and) we stopped at the Texas State Cemetery which is on 7th Street, near downtown. There is a veteran of the Civil War by the name of William McLemore buried there in a section reserved for veterans of that war. I wonder if it might be the McLemore that Nan Kittrel mentioned to you. I don't remember any other details like date of death."

However, this William buried in Austin could be yet another William McLemore of around the same age as the William McLemore who was a son of John and Sarah (Morgan) McLemore.

  58. 96.  John F. "Finn" McLemoreJohn F. "Finn" McLemore Descendancy chart to this point (34.John3, 5.Tobias2, 1.???1) was born on 28 Dec 1853 in Decatur County, Georgia; died on 12 Feb 1924 in Sabine County, Texas; was buried in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Sabine County, Texas.

    Notes:

Finn's middle name could have been Fenton (based on a poll tax receipt from Jasper) or Finerel (based on the middle name of his son, Rufus) or Finn, as he was commonly called.

At the time of the 1880 census, he was widowed, and living in the home of his in-laws with his young daughter.

He was a farmer. On the 1900 Sabine County census, he is shown in household 22, next to the Henry S. White family, his wife's brother. Household 36 is that of Thomas E. McLemore, his half brother.

Finn died in at the home of his son, Vessie McLemore. Vessie and Nina had been caring for him. Granddaughter Evon remembers she and some cousins going out into the woods to gather wildflowers for him while her father built a coffin. Her father and his brothers took the coffin by cart to the Gravel Hill cemetery a few days later.
